Improving Reading Speed, Parents and Homework, and Handling Peer Pressure
Ways to Improve Children’s Reading Speed QUESTION: My daughter is in sixth grade. She is a good reader and understands what she reads. The problem is she is a very slow reader, and I wonder how she is going to do on all the standardized tests that she will be required to take. What can be done to increase her reading speed? - Slow Reader ANSWER: The best readers are not always the fastest nor the slowest readers. They are the ones who recognize most words, read most material at a grade-level rate and most importantly understand what they have read. Nevertheless, you are right that on standardized tests an extremely slow reader is going to have problems. First of all, what is your child’s reading rate that you believe is too slow? At the start of the school year, the child should have been reading about 160 words per minute, and she should improve to about 170 words at the end of the year.

If she deviates greatly from these speeds, she needs to improve her rate. This can be done by removing bad reading habits if her comprehension and word recognition skills are up to grade level. You will need to observe your daughter while she is reading to see if she has any of the bad habits listed below that could lower her rate. If some are the problem, solutions are given for handling them and thus improving her reading rate. • Reading aloud: Moving lips for each word. Put a pencil between her lips. The pencil will fall out if she is reading orally while reading silently. • Finger pointing: Using her finger to keep her place definitely will slow her reading rate down. Have her replace her finger with a 3x5 card to keep her place. • Head moving: Put her reading material on a flat surface in front of her and have her place her elbows on the surface and hold her head with her hands.

Word-by-word reading: She will need to make an effort to read phrases instead of individual words. Try having her read passages with a fluent reader. Also, make flashcards with common phrases and see how fast she can read them. Moving from line to line: Triple space a typed paragraph then draw a line from the end of a line to the beginning of the next.

Parents’ Role in 5th Graders Homework QUESTION: How much should we monitor our fifth grade daughter’s homework? – Busy Parent

ANSWER: Remember just whose homework it is anyway! The earlier a child learns to not rely totally on parents, the faster the child will become a better student. As a parent you never want to feel that you are going through fifth grade for the second time! And parents who actually do the homework for their children have definitely gone too far! While parents may feel that being very involved in their children’s homework is the right thing to do, it really sends the message that the children are incapable of doing the work and that the main objective is perfection. It also denies children the opportunity to develop skills and gain understanding from the experience. And it certainly doesn’t teach them how to be responsible or to persevere with a task. In fact, one of the great benefits of children doing their homework by themselves is that it teaches them that they can struggle, try several different approaches, and succeed. This really gives them confidence in their own abilities that will carry over to other school tasks. However, if your child wants you to correct her completed work, you may point out errors or, better yet, the types of errors she has made. It is important for her to discover and correct her own errors. Point out individual errors only when time is limited. Hints on Handling Peer Pressure QUESTION: My kids are so different. Both are in elementary school. One can say, “No” easily to friends. The other can’t and is a victim of peer pressure. How can I help her say, “No” when she should? – Pressured ANSWER: Strangely enough, peer pressure can be good and bad. It is good when the peer group inspires your child to do well in academics and extracurricular activities. And of course, it can be very bad when it entices your child to do drugs or participate in dangerous activities. One way to help your child handle peer pressure besides talking about it is to role play likely scenarios that your child could face. Doing so really does help children learn how to suggest alternatives and to walk away from bad pressure. Another very positive way to handle peer press is to invite other children to your home where you can see if another child has a negative influence on your child.

Father’s day by Rob Weisskirch
My Dad Resolutions for 2020
with her is an easy way to incorporate exercise that I often neglect for myself.
As a new year begins, I start thinking about resolutions. Making concerted efforts to achieve self-improvement goals appeals to me. In the past, I gave up drinking soda for a year. Another year, I gave up watching TV. Over several years, I have set out vague goals to exercise more, with limited success, as the treadmill continues to serve as a clothes hanger. Rarely, however, have I thought about resolutions as a father.

I believe there are ways to improve as a dad, and here are some ideas for dad’s resolutions for 2020.
1.
Be more present. This is my focus for 2020. Nowadays, I think many parents and adults don’t have time management challenges--it is attention management. There are far too many times when I am home, but my face is in front of a screen doing something else. So, although I am physically present, I am not there. And, this carries over to family time, where I am checking email or social media instead of watching the dance routine my daughter has created or coloring with her because she wants company. For the next year, I am making a conscious effort to be present when I am with my family.
2.
Spend more one-on-one time. Many dads don’t have opportunities to spend time alone--without their partners--with their children. I also am guilty of this. It is easy for dads to cede parental duties in the presence of moms, but this results in the fatherchild relationship being through mom. If we want to know what is happening in our children’s lives, then we have to build the trusting, communicative relationships to allow that to occur. That can only occur when dads are with kids on their own because the focus of parenting at that time becomes you, the dad. Kids get the opportunity to know what we are like as people and how we are there for them when we are the sole parent.

Some dads retreat into their work as a refuge of the demands from home because work may be predictable and controllable in ways that raising kids is not. Without taking time for yourself, I think that dads can get lost. Taking time for yourself can also include your romantic partner! My wife and I have too few times where we take time on our own away from our daughter to be with one another and live in the adult world. In the next year, I plan to spend some personal time attending to our neglected yard and hiring a babysitter more often.

Play more. In our garage, we have all kinds of bats, balls, frisbees, jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, and, in the house, there are board games and card games. Although we have accumulated these over the years, they are used without regularity. When they are used, it is usually just my daughter or her with a friend for a short time. As a dad, there are just other things that draw my attention, and I don’t think about playing with my kid unless requested. This summer, when it got hot, my daughter wanted to play in the water wiggler (like a sprinkler) in our narrow backyard. My daughter was fine, but she wanted company. At first, I resisted because I didn’t want to get wet, muddy, or cold, but then I thought how often she is going to have the chance to run through the sprinkler comfortably, given our cool climate and with her dad. I obliged, and we had lots of messy fun. If I play with her, she is learning skills as valuable as reading a book. Besides, playing
Yell less. Yup, when I get frustrated with my headstrong, independent daughter, my volume goes up (and up). I don’t like being late, I don’t like being rushed, and I don’t like being defied by a kid. But, these are my issues, not my daughter’s. As a dad, yelling comes easy but is a poor tool to get her to do what I want. I often forget that, in her world, something shiny is a more attractive activity than is brushing your teeth and getting ready for school or other activities. As a kid, she lives in the present and has not absorbed our adult focus on punctuality, work ethic, among different values. So, I am working on keeping myself in check and using other strategies to keep her on track to enjoy the things she wants to do. I don’t want to be a yelling dad--I want to be a loving dad. Dads, now is the time to think about how over the next year what goals you can set to improve as a parent. Resolutions should be clear and achievable--even the smallest gesture can accumulate and add up to significant impacts in the lives of your children. Let 2020 be the year of a better dad. that will make multi-colored drawings. If you have a roll of butcher paper (and you should!) roll out a big piece and have your child lie down on it. Use a Sharpie to make their outline. Give them a box of crayons and have them color in their lifesize self-portrait. Google “preschooler crafts” and you’ll find all kinds of great suggestions like these. INDOOR PLAY. When it’s been raining for a few days, preschoolers need to burn off some of their energy. There are a few local choices that allow kids the opportunity to run, climb, and jump freely. WALK THE MALL. Both Salinas and Capitola have indoor malls where you can avoid the rain and still get some needed exercise. If your toddler will sit in the stroller, grab a cup of coffee and stroll up and back a few times. A bonus at Capitola Mall is The Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery. GET CREATIVE. You probably have all the makings in your house for some creative fun. A box of paper cups can be the building blocks for a giant tower. A bucket of soapy water placed on a tarp or in the bathtub can become a carwash for toy cars. A rainy day is a great time to recycle crayons. Have the kids help you pull the wrappers off and break them into small pieces. An adult can place the pieces into a silicone mold (or muffin tin with liners) and bake for 1520 minutes. Once cool, peel the liner off and you have big chunky crayons
INDOOR WATER FUN. Fill the tub with bubble bath, a bunch of plastic containers, and put on loud music and let your child splash to their heart’s content. While they are enjoying tub time, you can clean the bathroom! Painting with water is also a blast. Put a few towels on the floor by the darkest wall in the house (or a blackboard if you have one!) and give your child a big paintbrush and a small bucket of water. Let them paint on the wall the same way they would on paper. The difference is their creations will dry quickly with no residue.
5.
GET COOKING. Preschoolers love to cook and bake so a rainy afternoon is a great time to whip up a batch of cookies, decorate storebought ones, or help with dinner. Be patient with your little one, they will make a bit of a mess, but if you give them small jobs to do like pouring the ingredients in the pan or allow them to stir things together in a big bowl, they’ll get the hang of it quickly. Decorating store bought cookies is another easy kitchen activity. Give your child plain cookies (or graham crackers) and a tube of icing and let them go to town. Add a packet of sprinkles for extra fun.

GIVE IN: PLAY IN THE RAIN! There’s no reason you can’t get all bundled up, pull on some waterproof rain boots, and make the best of it by playing in the rain. Jump in puddles, collect wet leaves, and look for rainbows during a walk on the beach.

Researchers say that screen time is hurting your toddler’s development. Here’s why you should — and how to — break the habit. One of your New Year’s resolutions might be to start limiting your toddler’s screen time — and you have a good reason. A slew of recent studies shows that too much screen time can cause delays in toddlers’ brain development, speech, and social skills. Researchers found that children who spend more time in front of screens than the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends had white matter in their brains that weren’t developing as quickly, according to a study at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. This affects the child’s self-regulation, literacy and language skills, and process of mental control. The study is based on MRI scans and cognitive skills test of 47 children ages 3-5. Their parents took a questionnaire that required them to tell how much screen time their children get. The AAP recommends that screen time should be limited to 1 hour a day for children from the ages of 2-5. Toddlers 18-24 months should only watch high-quality, educational programs (such as ones by Sesame Workshop and PBS) with a parent. They also recommend no screen time (other than video chatting) for children under 18 months. Rebecca Kerley, an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) spe-

One thing we have seen more of is kids on their parent’s cell phones, sometimes to the extent that their development is being hindered,” Kerley said. “In the most extreme cases, it can cause severe mental health disorders.” She said that by directly interacting with their parents instead of a cell phone or mobile device, young children learn how to communicate and socialize. A Canadian study published in March shows that expressive language can be delayed in 18-month-olds with cell phone use. The study’s researchers surveyed the parents of 873 18-montholds. The median daily cell phone use of these toddlers was 15 minutes.
“The prevalence of parent-reported expressive speech delay was 6.6%, and the prevalence of other parentreported communication delays was 8.8%,” the study states. “For children who used a mobile media device, each additional 30-minute increase in daily mobile media device use was associated with increased odds of parent-reported expressive speech delay.” Kerley said if parents aren’t directly interacting with their toddlers enough or at all, they can develop attachment disorder, which has traits similar to autism — “including severe delays in social and communication skills along with stereotypical behavior.” “While these two disorders are similar, the difference is that autism is a disability a child is born with, attachment disorders are a significant mental health issue caused by problems with the parent-child relationship,” she said. “Some kids are disinhibited, meaning

they haven’t developed an appropriate attachment and are overly friendly to strangers seeking adults to interact with. Other kids may have speech delays along with explosive behavior and aggression, which is how kids with mental health issues tend to express themselves.” Even though there are seemingly educational games they can play, children under the age of 3 should never handle cell phones, Kerley said. She also recommends not giving children access to things like an iPad until they are five years old. “I am very concerned that the use of parents cell phones in Early childhood is an epidemic and real health and safety issue for small children in our rapidly changing world of technology, that in the worst cases, are replicating institution-like conditions for a child where adults have little interaction with them and the child is simply plugged into a world of screens,” Kerley said. Seaside mom Megan Anderson said she tries to limit her almost 2-year-old son’s screen time to 30 minutes a day. She also never uses the TV as a babysitter and makes sure to sit next to him and engage with him
about what’s happening in the show. “Because so much of our lives revolves around screens, and I use my phone to connect with family and take pictures, etc. there is no eliminating screens in this house,” Anderson said. “However, we do not have games on our phones to use to entertain our son, so he doesn’t seek out our phones for entertainment.”

Instead of screen time, Anderson said they spend a lot of time outside or have play dates. She also involves him in the housework, and they play a lot with playdough, read books, and color. “It’s hard,” she said. “Especially when you have a cranky child who is screaming, you’re pulling your hair out and can’t think straight, and there is
still an hour till nap time. Like I said, we are not perfect. All the rules go out the window on vacation or when we are sick. But I intentionally find short episodes of a show to watch, or set a timer so that we don’t go over.” Kerley recommends parents have a routine with their toddlers. “Try to get your kids out every day and play with them at different points throughout the day,” she said. “While parents don’t have to be focused on their child every moment, they do need to stay close and respond when their child checks in.” She also said that kids learn through play. “They have to play to develop. Kids learn to talk is by talking to adults. The social skills they learn now are the foundation for their relationships for the rest of their lives. Get down at their level and be in their world. As boring as this seems, kids can be a lot of fun! Debunking Catholic School Myths Plaids. Pews. Priests. When you think of Catholic schools, some of those familiar images may immediately jump to mind. But when you’re considering the right education option for your student, you should have all the facts. Teresa Bennett, the Principal of San Carlos School in Monterey debunked some of the common myths of Catholic school education.
1.
Catholic schools are too expensive. Most of our Catholic schools have some of the lowest tuition rates in the area. Also, tuition assistance is available for those who qualify. The amounts of tuition assistance vary depending on the resources of theschool, but many of the elementary schools can provide approximately one-quarter of the tuition costs. Some of our Catholic High Schools can provide substantial tuition assistance.

Catholic schools are only for Catholics. Students and families of all faiths are welcome and enroll in our Catholic Schools. Although the focus of our religion curriculum is to learn about the teachings and practices of the Catholic faith, if comfortable, students of other faiths are encouraged to share their traditions and practices to build an understanding of sim-
