from the publisher… Welcome to Monterey Bay Parent! I attended UC Santa Cruz, lived in the Monterey area for almost 20 years, and my daughter was born at CHOMP–in other words, I have deep roots on the Monterey Peninsula. After leaving Monterey, I spent 18 years living in Naples, Florida where I published 4 family-oriented magazines including a monthly parenting magazine that has become a community institution after 17 years in production. But I always knew I wanted to be back in the Monterey Bay area! Last year, all the pieces fell together and I was able to sell my publishing company and make my way back to the area I have always considered home. Once I arrived, I quickly realized two things: 1. I really missed publishing and 2. Monterey Bay really needed a family magazine. The result of those realizations is Monterey Bay Parent magazine. My plan with MBP is to do what I did in Naples: build a community-based publication that serves the needs of parents and grandparents, residents and tourists alike. Each month we’ll bring you articles about local topics and parenting issues. We’ve been hard at work planning the issues and building a social media presence for the past few months. We’ve also been busy building our website. At MontereyBayParent.com you’ll find a calendar of events that is updated daily as well as articles of interest and extensive resources such as our directories for Summer Camps, Vacation Bible Schools, and U-Pick Farms. You can also find us on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram–just search for Monterey Bay Parent or you can link directly to each through our website. I am excited to be back in Monterey and thrilled to be bringing Monterey Bay Parent to the area. Please feel free to reach out with your suggestions and requests. Agricultural History Project-Watsonville Families from all over the U.S. spend hours exploring their educational exhibits, games, demonstrations, guest animal appearances, historical archives, and the agriculture research in the Codiga Center & Museum. The Agricultural History Project is located at the entrance to the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville. As you discover the rich agricultural history of Santa Cruz, Monterey and Pajaro Valley, you will learn about the crops, people, artifacts and farming practices that have made the Central Coast of California what it is today. Star Toy Lending Library-Monterey A hidden gem ran by the Special Kids Crusade which was founded by parents of developmentally disabled children. Special Kids Crusade understands the challenges and achievements of children with differing abilities. They are working hard to develop quality regional resources, raise awareness in the community, and provide much-needed support for these special children and their families. The STAR Toy Lending library holds a myriad of different toys and books that can be checked out for FREE. (You will need to provide a valid credit card for them to keep on file). STAR Library is a special toy and resource lending library of Special Kids Crusade, Inc. but anyone can check out toys and books. Story-time at The FarmSalinas The Farm is an agricultural education center and local farming business just outside of Salinas. They offer fresh produce for sale, farm tours, special family activities and a pleasant rural destination. During the height of their growing season, they also conduct a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription. On Tuesdays, homemade pizza is for sale. On Fridays, they bake fruit pies in their kitchen, which are then available for sale in their farm shop. Children will delight in feeding the farm animals and petting the bunnies. You can find many events & festivals each month on weekends for families, including puppet shows, hay rides (FREE) and cow train rides ($5). In Autumn they have a fun pumpkin patch. The Farm hosts an outdoor story time on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30am. Meet in the back patio under umbrellas for all ages stories, songs and snacks! Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District’s hikes & classes-Various locations Every season, Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD) puts together an exciting array of environmental education and outdoor related programs, classes and activities to broaden people’s opportunities to get outside, learn about and enjoy nature. These offerings include, geocaching, stargazing, hiking, geology, wildlife watching, art and writing, gardening, volunteer activities, fire safety and many other favorites. Programs are designed for the young, young at heart, families and friends. The Spring/Summer 2017 activities guide is available online and features some awesome free activities, from star parties in Carmel Valley to exploring the wonders of the Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing. Science Saturdays at Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History-Pacific Grove Science Saturdays are family friendly events that have a variety of hands-on science activities for guests of all ages to participate in. Admission for all is FREE on Science Saturdays, the last Saturday of the month, during the school year. Hosted by the PG Museum Staff, you will always leave there with new knowledge and a better understanding of nature. Science Saturdays run from 10am-3pm. If you are not staying the night in the hotel, you can take a “day” vacation to the Big Sur River Inn pool. They do not allow you to bring food or drink, however they have a full restaurant and bar next door as well as a burrito bar and made-to-order pizzas. On Sundays throughout the summer they offer live music featuring all kinds of jazz with some folk, Zydeco and world music mixed in. Hours of operation: The pool is open from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Lifeguard on Duty: No Cost: $10 per person; $20 per family CARMEL VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER POOL 25 Ford Rd, Carmel Valley • (831) 659-3983 CVCYC is a private, non-profit organization that provides one of the only outdoor pools for general swimming. Located in Carmel Valley, the weather tends to be warmer and more comfortable for swimming. They have a diving board and a small slide in the shallow end for smaller children. There is a full snack bar or you can pack food. It is recommended that you arrive early as parking and the lounge chairs fill up fast. Hours of operation: June 3-August 6 (weekend dates may be extended past August 6); Monday-Friday: Noon-4:00 PM; Saturday & Sunday: Noon-5:00 PM Lifeguard on Duty: Yes Cost: Non-Members: $8; Members: $6 Annual Membership fee is $50 and memberships run from January 1-December 31. Located off of Highway 68 towards Salinas, Titus Park Swim and Tennis is a private club. The weather is usually warmer in this area. Titus Park is one of the few pools in the area that uses a salt system for water sanitation. This system reduces or eliminates the need for added chlorine. It’s much easier on the eyes, skin and even on swimsuits! The wading pool, at a depth of just one foot, is a great way to introduce children under six years to the water in a fun, safe environment. Hours of operation: OPEN SWIM is daily from Noon-5:30 PM & 6:00 PM-8:00 PM Lifeguard on Duty: Yes Cost: This is a membership only pool. These days can feel longer if we don´t have go-to places for children to explore and run off some steam. Here are nine local destinations where your family can enjoy some outdoor time and a great walk! 1. Frog Pond Wetland Preserve: Enjoy a short (¾ mile) loop around a beautiful pond while listening for the calls of ducks, frogs, and a variety of birds. Children will love exploring under the overgrown trees and bushes, which almost feel like a natural labyrinth. Don´t forget to bring your binoculars and a light lunch. Parking: Free, located off of the shoulder of Canyon Del Rey Blvd. Address: 698 Canyon Del Rey Blvd. Del Rey Oaks, CA, 93940 Directions: Drive north on HWY 1, exit Canyon Del Rey Blvd. and make a left. Fort Ord Dunes State Park: At Fort Ord Dunes you will find over five miles of paved trails that are all access friendly. If you´re feeling adventurous, explore sand trails that branch off toward the dunes and beach. Only have a short break? Skip the walk and head down to the first beach access trail by the main parking lot entrance. Enjoy breathtaking views while the children climb the dunes. Parking: Free, open from sunrise to sunset. Jack´s Peak Park: Nestled comfortably in the hills of Monterey, Jack´s Peak Park offers a great workout within its eight miles of trails. Children will love its storybook location complete with lush pine trees. The whole family can experience the thrill of hiking up to the highest point in the Monterey Peninsula, rising 1,068 feet above the valley! The views of the ocean, city and bay below will quickly become a family favorite. Picnic areas are available next to the parking lots. Parking: $5 per vehicle. this trail is accessible through Potrero and Sandholt Roads off of HWY 1. The whole family will enjoy exploring trails and passing the slough, boats, and beach that connect the two entrances. Driftwood art and fortresses are common, so don’t forget to warm yourself on the sand when you venture off toward this small but charming town!

6. Fort Ord National Monument: This secluded location boasts over 80 miles of undeveloped wildland terrain. Flora and fauna lovers will enjoy identifying over 35 rare species of plant with scenic views of the valleys. This location is known for its inclines, so bring your mountain bikes and good hiking shoes.

Parking: Free. Address: Creekside Terrace Salinas, CA, 93908. Directions: Drive North on HWY 68 toward Salinas. Exit toward River Rd. Make a left onto River Rd, a right onto Portola Dr., and continue onto Creekside Terrace. Parking is free on the shoulders of the road.

5. Laguna Grande Regional Park: Take the family out for a walk around this gorgeous lake while exploring the three surrounding playgrounds and volleyball court. The complete loop is about a mile and you´ll enjoy tracking your distance or simply enjoying the sights of the ducks and birds. BBQ and picnic tables are also available. Parking: Free. Address: 1350 Del Monte Boulevard Seaside, CA, 93955. Directions: Driving North on HWY 1, exit Canyon Del Rey Blvd. and head East. The lake sits between Del Monte Ave and Fremont Blvd. Make a right onto any open parking lot.

7. Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve: Elkhorn Slough is more than just a research facility. Dress in layers and take along a lunch, as you hike through marshes, woodlands, and creeks. The area is well known for its variety of birds. Kayaking will add to the day´s adventure in this wonderful reserve. Guided tours are available and families are invited to attend events promoting wildlife and conservation. The Visitor Center also has binoculars and bird books available for loan during visiting hours. Parking: Free. Admission: $4.12 day use for ages 16 and over, children are free. Address: 1700 Elkhorn Rd Castroville, CA, 95012. Directions: Drive North on HWY 1, turn right onto Dolan Rd, right onto Elk-

horn Rd, and your destination will be on your right after Empire Rd. 8. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve: Experience the sensation of wanderlust as this park offers beautiful scenery at every turn. With over 10 miles looping through the shore and forest, Point Lobos provides hours of endless space to explore. The forest will pull you in with its ocean vistas, the calls of sea lions, cliff viewpoints, tide pools, diving areas, and beaches all along the south shore. Parking: $10 per vehicle. Address: 62 California 1 Carmel-bythe-Sea, CA, 93923. Directions: Drive South on HWY 1, entrance will be on your right after passing Monastery Beach. 9. Mission Trail Park: A former estate that has now been converted into a 33 acre preserve, houses a network of trails rounding five miles that the whole family will enjoy. The trails are mostly flat and are surrounded by tall pine, redwoods, and a wide variety of flora. The trails wind through streams with visibility of Carmel Beach. A wellpreserved secret, Mission Trail Park is beloved by all who visit with its views of Point Lobos, the Carmel Mission Basilica and an abandoned mansion. Parking: Free. community Monterey County Libraries Monterey Public Library (625 Pacific Street, Monterey) children’s section is always fully stocked with coloring sheets, puzzles, and comfy cushions inviting children to snuggle up and read with Mom and Dad. At this library, kids love hopping up on the stools provided and scanning their own books for checkout. A newly opened snack stand Etta’s Eats, is located near the back entrance and serves up lots of inexpensive snacks for the kiddos and coffee drinks for the grown ups. The library offers story time for the preschool kids (2-5 years old) at 10:15am and 11:00am on Thursday mornings. This event is so popular that they offer the same program twice to accommodate everyone. For the baby and toddler crowd (0-2 years old), Baby Rhyme Time is offered on Fridays at

10:30am. Mommies, daddies and other caregivers are invited to stay afterwards for some extra socializing and play. Hip special events are offered throughout the year for older kids, like the “Design Your Own Graphic Novel” three-week course offered this June. At the Pacific Grove Library (550 Central Avenue, Pacific Grove) the children’s section is also quite large. It is separated from the rest of the library, giving kids more freedom to scamper through the stacks and talk in louderthan-whisper voices. Regular story times throughout the year are on Wednesdays at 10:15am, however with the kick-off of the summer reading program in late June, the library will be offering a series of special presentations instead. The Marina Library (190 Seaside Circle, Marina) is part of the Monterey Country Free Public Library system, but the best way to find information online is through their advocacy group, Friends of the Marina Library (www.friendsofthemarinalibrary.org). This very busy group hosts huge used book sales annually and smaller sales bi-monthly; Children’s Block Parties, featuring big blocks, miniature kitchen, loads of cool toys, and reading Dads on the Second Saturday of every month. Preschool Storytime for ages 2 to 5 at 10:15am and 11:15am is hosted on Thursdays (the story times are identical, the space is just too small to accommodate everyone all at once). Bonus: there is a children’s play area, including a climbing structure, just outside the library. Another branch of MCFL, The Seaside Library (550 Harcourt Avenue, Seaside) is a bit smaller, but offers just as much in terms of programing and resources for kids, tweens, and teens. They offer amenities such as kid-only computers with educational software, limited-access internet and an excellent homework center open Monday through Thursday afternoons. The homework center is staffed with knowledgeable adults (during the school year). Regular special events include story time every Tuesday at 10:30am and Bilingual Storytime every 4th Saturday at 11:00am. Every second Wednesday kids can boost their reading skills by reading to two wonderful Saint Bernard dogs. Regular story time for tots, featuring songs and stories is held Thursdays mornings at 10:00am. Family Storytime is every Wednesday afternoon at 4:00pm. Children can read to dogs every Saturday at 10:45am. In addition to these programs, the library offers a Family Board Game Night on Thursdays at 4:00pm and Karaoke on Mondays at 5:00pm. Keep an eye out for the special programming associated with their summer reading program and pick up a schedule at the library. The library also offers an open play groups for ages 0-5 on Friday afternoons at 4:30pm, Saturdays at 10:00am and 1:30pm and Sundays at 1:30pm. The John Steinbeck Library (350 Lincoln Avenue, Salinas) offers Pajama Storytime on Thursdays at 6:00pm and Family Storytime on Saturdays at 11:00am. This library features a teen lounge designed by a focus group of teens complete with YA fiction section, graphic novels, Xbox and Wii gaming stations. The Steinbeck Library also hosts an open play group on Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm, just like the play groups found at Cesar Chavez. The smaller El Gabilan Library (1400 North Main Street, Salinas) offers a Pajama Storytime Tuesdays at 7:00pm. In addition to this open programing, Parents and their littles ones, ages 0-5, can enroll in weekly play groups offered seven days a week at all three Salinas public library locations as well as at the Hebbron Family Center (683 Fremont Street, Salinas). These play groups help develop relationships between caregivers and children and teach the principals of positive parent-

Santa Cruz Library System The upstairs of The Santa Cruz Library Downtown Location (224 Church Street, Santa Cruz) houses a spacious room for young people (ages 0-18). It is a safe and comfortable place for kids and teens to hang out, read, look at magazines and do their homework. Toddler Time for ages 0-3, is on Fridays at 10:00am and Preschool Storytime for ages 3-6 is on Thursdays at 10:00am. The library also offers D.I.Y crafts, selfdirected crafts for all ages, on Mondays at 3:00pm. The Live Oak Branch (2380 Portola Drive, Santa Cruz) is another one of the larger Santa Cruz public libraries. It has a young adult room and a story time area, as well as computers for kids and teens. They offer a Toddler Time for ages 0-3, on Mondays at 10:00am. They also host a Spanish (Bilingual) Storytime for ages 0-8, on Mondays at 5:30pm and Preschool Storytime for ages 3-6, on Wednesdays at 11:00am. Another D.I.Y Craft class meets Sundays at 1:00pm at this location. In addition to regular story times, The Aptos Branch (7695 Soquel Drive, Santa Cruz) has a Youth Chess Club (ages 6-18), which meets on Tuesdays at 3:30pm this summer. The Santa Cruz Library system has ten libraries stretching from La Selva Beach to Boulder Creek. Most of these libraries offer an assortment of story times, family craft times, and tales to tails programs, which use therapy dogs to help children struggling with reading (contact library to make an appointment). Offer to be his loyal servant for the day, and bring him coffee and toast in bed; fetch his newspaper; lie out his clothes, bath towel, and mat; be host or hostess and serve his beverages and snacks; clean up after him and anything else to give him the royal treatment.

A Man to Remember Get your creative juices flowing, and write a poem for your dad. You need not be a poet to come up with a few thoughtful words to say how much he means. Describe the impact he’s had on your life, how he’s helped you to become the person you are today, and what he is to you. Then print it on stationary and frame it. Musical Moment Take your father to see his favorite band or performing artist, enjoy a jazz or blues festival, or pack up some lawn chairs, and enjoy a local concert-in-the-park. Togetherness Takes Two Has your dad been putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out his attic or garage? Give him a gift of shelving materials and brackets, wall racks and ceiling hooks, and storage crates. Then spend the day helping him to get it organized.

Sports Buff’s Surprise Take your dad for a sporting good time. Play a game of golf, tennis, or basketball, go fishing, or enjoy a paddle around a lake. If being a spectator is his thing, purchase tickets to his favorite sporting event. Weekend Getaway Get in touch with nature and each other on a camping trip for two. Either rough it in a tent or rent a mini cabin at a state park, and spend your weekend enjoying nature hikes, sight seeing, fishing, boating, playing cards, and taking it easy together. Father’s Day Feast As the old adage goes; the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, treat dad to a mouthwatering meal on the bar-be-que. Fix him his favorite: steak, ribs, chicken, burgers, or chops for starters, and don’t forget the grilled potatoes or squash, garlic bread or rolls, fresh green beans or asparagus, potato salad, and his favorite dessert. Just the Two of Us Put together a photo collage of you and your father. There are many ways to do this. Find instructions at your nearby craft store and create a Decoupage photo collage, keep it simple with a multi-photo frame, or purchase a unique 3D Photo Collage frame which can be found through a number of stores online. Take a Stroll Enjoy a peaceful walk together in the park or the country. Better yet, gather your bikes or roller blades, hit a scenic bike path, and enjoy the summer breeze. Certificates of Appreciation Show Dad you appreciate his hard work by returning the favor. Make coupons that say: “In appreciation for all that you do, Dad, please redeem this certificate for a hassle-free car wash by me!” Other favors include sweeping out the garage, mowing the lawn, or any other task for which he normally takes responsibility. Catch a Flick…..or two Treat your dad to a movie fest. Rent a couple newly released videos or some of his long time favorites, or head to the cinemas for a double feature. Whether you take the movies in at home or the theatre, don’t forget the hot, buttered popcorn, candy, and soft drinks. A Gift of Giving Does your dad have a favorite cause or charity such as the Humane Society, the Nature Conservancy, or American Cancer Society? ery often, weekend mornings at our house start with “Daddy Sandwiches”, comprised of egg, cheese, and bacon that apparently only my husband can make correctly. Dad informs the troops that today is a “Daddy and Daughter Day.” When the girls ask Dad where he is taking them this time he just smiles and says, “We are going on an adventure!” This means that they will disappear for a while, reappearing with sweaty, dirty faces, mud-caked shoes and smiles reaching from ear to ear. Both girls spill over to give an account of their special day with Daddy. Here are some of their favorite Monterey County adventures: Kayaking at Moss Landing The water is still and clear in the Elkhorn Slough making kayaking an easier

feat then in the bay. Otters and birds, too numerous to count will surely grace you with their presence. The ratio for this adventure is 1 adult per 1 child for the tandem kayaks, and children need to be 5 and over. My older daughter simply loved this special date with Daddy. Overnight Camp-Out More than once Dad has packed up the car and taken the girls on an overnight adventure. It has been an excellent opportunity for our kids to learn how to put up a tent, how to make and keep a fire, and how to survive without Mom. The girls love to cook hotdogs on a stick and devour S’mores. Daddy usu-

ally brings a favorite chapter book to read by flashlight before lights go out. In the past, camp-outs have been held at Andrew Molera State Park, but the camp ground is currently closed until further notice due to damage from the fires and flooding. Unfortunately, most of the Big Sur camp groups are currently closed or unreachable. However, Veteran’s Memorial Park in Monterey offers a less-involved, closer to home option. The forty drive-up campsites are first come, first serve and are equipped with tables and fire pits. If you can plan ahead, it is wise to make reservations at the many other campgrounds from Monterey to Santa Cruz. Check out Fremont Peak State Park south of San Juan Bautista, for primitive campsites under the oak trees and excellent views of the Monterey Bay. Another gem is Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz near the

Roaring Camp Railroad (an adventure for another day perhaps). My kids are fascinated by the John C. Fremont Tree, a particularly huge redwood hollowed out by fire, located in Henry Cowell. Archery Class in Salinas My husband takes my older daughter every few Saturdays to the Jim Cox Archery Shop in Salinas (28 Quail Run Circle, Suite D, Salinas). Weekly lessons are offered every Saturday at 10:00am and 11:30am. They provide the bows, arrows, and an eight-lane range. Her favorite part of the lessons is getting to pop balloons. Between lessons, both girls practice with Dad in the backyard, shooting rubber tipped (safety) arrows at a homemade target. Going to the SPCA My husband is extremely allergic to cats but my girls can’t get enough. They love everything about them. The girls are often found wandering the house, meowing and lamenting their bad luck that we can’t get a kitten of our own. One of their favorite Daddy-Daughter Day adventures was a trip to the SPCA

for Monterey County (1002 Monterey Salinas Highway, Monterey). They were invited to pet and hold the kittens and puppies. My girls went from room to room in pure bliss, visiting each and every kitten. They also visited the smaller dogs and made friends with a puppy named “Plum”, who they still talk about almost a year later. Luckily a few hours with the animals didn’t aggravated Dad’s allergies too much. He got bonus points with the girls for taking them there, “even though he was allergic.” The Home Depot Kid’s Project Many weekend adventures start at The Home Depot. I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention that the first Saturday of the month, all Home Depot locations offer a free workshop for children of pretty much any age (though younger kids need a lot of parental help and recommended age is 5-12). Most projects make use of hammers, nails, wood glue, screws, and paint. Supplies and paper instructions are provided free, as well as a Home Depot apron and a pin to commemorate the project. My kids have made flower pots, picture frames, box-

es, wagons, trucks, airplanes, and much more. This is a very popular event, so Dad likes to make sure he gets the girls out early so they can get a space at the workbench. Downtown Monterey My husband and girls like to wander around downtown Monterey, exploring the gardens and enjoying a lunch of hummus, veggies, and chicken strips at Peter B’s in the back of the Portola Plaza Hotel. It features a nice outdoor area and great kid’s menu. Often the adventures are as simple as a trolley ride to Cannery Row to buy a single gum ball at IT’SUGAR. We love this place because there is no minimum candy buy. In the end, it doesn’t really matter what they do, the girls love their special time with Dad and of course Mom loves it too!
