from the publisher… Happy Father’s Day! June is the last day of school and Father’s Day, and a big deal this year for those of us on the Monterey Bay: The US Open at Pebble Beach! It’s a busy month, and we have lots of great info to make the month even better. One of the best ways to celebrate the men in our lives is by (gently) reminding them that staying healthy matters. June is “Men’s Health Month,” and we’re acknowledging that with Jasmine Root’s article on page 18. “Health Screenings: A Guide For Men” covers all the health checkups and care your guy needs in each age group. While it isn’t up to women to take over managing our partner’s health choices, there’s no harm in asking your husband or father if he’s up to date on his screenings. And, for our male readers–there’s no excuse for not putting your health on the priority list. Your family depends on you! While hamburgers aren’t specifically for dads, we did decide it was a good month for our “Ultimate Burger Guide.” I’ve eaten more hamburgers than I care to count over the last month. I’ll be exercising all of them off while you enjoy trying out our suggestions! (page 12-13). If you’ve been putting off making summer plans for the kids, we offer you our “Last Chance Summer Camp Guide” on pages 8-11. INVOLVED DAD Equals Happier, Healthier Kids! I

f I follow the media images, on Father’s Day, as a father, I am supposed to lie in a hammock, take a break from mowing the lawn, play golf, watch sports on television all day, open a tie as a gift, and take a nap. It is unlikely any of those will occur (although the nap does sound appealing). The media portrayal of what fathers do in their families has become fathers who can’t make a meal, can’t handle caring for their children (let alone change a diaper), hide in the garage, and have no clue of how to shop for their children among other inaccurate representations of what fathers do. The reality is that fathers engage in family and household duties successfully every day. The challenge has been that parenting is often seen as–what I have learned is called– “matricentric,” centered on mothers. Parenting is a partnership, not just about what mothers do or what fathers do through mothers as filters. Fathers have an impact on their children through their fathering. For kids,

the benefits of father involvement are tremendous. With involved dads, kids achieve more in school, have better social relationships, and are less likely to engage in aggressive and delinquent behaviors. Father-absence has the opposite effects of putting kids at risk for aggression, lower academic achievement, and weaker social skills. Even when fathers are non-residential (like when Dad does not have full custody of children or military dads on deployment) and have warm, interactive relationships with their children, they still foster positive outcomes their children. Fathers are vital pieces to the parenting puzzle. Those dads who disengage from their families, relegate themselves to just “baby daddies,” or become deadbeat dads do the rest of us a disservice and present a poor image of fatherhood. Those bad dads should not be representative of the rest of us who are full partners in parenting and work hard to raise good kids. Nowadays, fathers are spending

more time with their children than in the past. Current studies indicate that fathers are spending more time with their children by bringing them into their leisure activities. This means that fathers are spending more of their non-work time in activities that include children. Fatherhood is also changing identities more for men than in the past. Current approaches to involved parenting are having men view fatherhood as central to their perceptions of themselves. Men are becoming first-time fathers at older ages. For the daughter, I imagine, despite the typical teen embarrassment and eye rolls, that she recognized that her father was fully present in all aspects of her life and accepting the totality of who she is. Many people yearn for that level of support that my friend provided, just by being a good dad. Many of you may have seen the social media image of an attentive father in the bathroom, shirtless, holding an infant in a carrier and braiding his preschool-aged daughter’s hair. Or, perhaps, you see those fathers working hard in the fields to provide for their families here. I also recognize the great sacrifices that dads in the military and those who are first responders make by putting duty to community and country ahead of their families. These are the images and actions of fathers that merit attention and appreciation. As one of those involved dads, I see your stares when you see me disciplining my daughter or her crying after being reprimanded for poor behavior. I hope those stares become a learning experience, because, yup, that is what I do as part of being a good dad. For this Father’s Day, don’t fret over gifts or special meals. Just acknowledge the good acts that the dads in your life do every day. Also, pledge to offer a compliment or encouragement to fathers you see in the community doing good things for their children and families. Dads fathering well need to be recognized by us all. This Father’s Day I won’t be lying in a hammock alone–I’ll be with my family. Happy Father’s Day! Robert (Rob) S. The carmel youth center Camp will be offered on a weekly basis starting June 10th through August 9th. Camp is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm for ages 6 through 13 years old. ost people love a good hamburger, and almost everyone has a recommendation for where to find the best one. We wanted to compile a top burger list, but we also wanted something a little different. After asking for recommendations in our Facebook group, we set out to try over a dozen of the recommended burgers. We narrowed those down to our favorites, choosing restaurants that not only offered a great burger but something unique for our list. Here are seven great restaurants for a burger and something extra! Crown and Anchor Best place to meet friends The Crown and Anchor is the quintessential “hanging out with my friends” bar. It’s our choice for our favorite place to sit with a burger and a friend or two for a few hours of laughter. You’ll find a full menu until midnight, so this is also an excellent choice for that late night hamburger! Kids are welcome (there is a quarter pound “Little Sailor” Burger with fries for $6.00). Kids will enjoy looking at the old sailing ships and the historical artifacts that fill this traditional pub. The burgers are simple, piled high with toppings and just the perfect amount of greasy. While the burger is delicious, we’ve decided that the best part of ordering the hamburger at Crown and Anchor is the steak fries you get with the burger. El Estero Snack Bar Perfect for lunch while playing at the park This unassuming snack bar is a hidden gem. Located next to Dennis the Menace Park, the snack bar has been there for many years, but we didn’t realize how good their hamburgers were until a Facebook group member clued us in. And, good they are! The hamburgers taste like they came out of a restaurant kitchen, not a little shack set up in the parking lot of a ballpark. They’re juicy and simple with shredded lettuce and tomato–precisely what we like in a burger. The French fries are hot and tasty. The plus for families is that they also serve hot dogs, corn dogs, ice cream, snow cones (the only place we know of in the area that has them) and other kidfriendly options. Open for lunch until 5:00 pm, El Estero Snack Bar is an excellent choice for an afternoon outing to Dennis the Menace and lunch on the go. 777 Pearl St, Monterey, 93940 (831) 372-8446 Islands Best burger at the mall Located at Del Monte Center in Monterey, Island’s has an extensive menu of burger choices that all have one thing in common–they are huge. The Kilauea burger is our favorite–a jalapeño & black pepper-crusted burger with pepper jack cheese, chipotle aioli, lettuce, and tomato. All burgers come with endless fries.

There are plenty of menu choices for those who prefer a non-burger option. Island’s also has a children’s menu, and on Monday-Wednesday, kids eat free from the kids’ menu. The dessert options are big enough to share, and our suggestion is the Chocolate Lava–a sundae on top of a chocolate brownie. Her exact words were: “It’s the only place I’ll eat a burger. I literally drive to Salinas from Marina anytime I’m craving a burger.” The Angus burger is 1/2 pound of meat served with basic toppings. This is a BIG burger and paired with a side of French Fries (soup, green salad, or potato salad can be substituted) it’s almost too much for one person. When we ate lunch here recently, we ended up not finishing half of the fries. We paired our burgers with Monterey Coast Brewing Pilsner–perfect for a lazy lunch! The menu is pretty extensive, offering everything from grilled salads to pizza. Seventh & Dolores Fancy date night burger If you’re craving a burger and looking for a romantic location for a date day or night, Seventh & Dolores has you covered. If you haven’t planned by making a reservation, you might be able to get a spot at the bar after a (hopefully) short wait. Overlooking the Links at Spanish Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Stick’s is the spot where the bagpiper begins his daily lateafternoon performance. Depending on the season, you can bring guests to Stick’s for an early dinner on the patio by the fire pits (they reopen for dinner at 4 pm) to catch the bagpiper who begins at approximately 5:45 pm. During standard time the performance starts a half hour before sunset. The “Sticks Burger” features maple onion bacon jam, butter pickles, Vermont cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and avocado and comes with a salad or shoestring fries. The downtown Monterey location is perfect for a casual lunch. They have a roomy dining area and outdoor tables. The menu is pretty extensive and includes a variety of burgers as well as Sur’s specialty fried chicken on a sandwich. Sur Burger’s condiment bar sets it apart–you can select your own mix of toppings to create the perfect combination. Sur Burger also has soft serve ice cream and a bacon and waffle sundae. During a recent visit, we overheard two twenty-something young men tell the manager that their burgers were the best they’d ever had. High praise from guys who probably know a thing or two about burgers! Sticker Activity Books Kids love to play with stickers and stick them on basically anything! Buying a themed sticker activity book could provide tons of fun for younger kids. Looking for sticker books that have multiple pages to stick those stickers is key. Be on the lookout for activity books that are more educational and include facts and specified places to put the sticker as well as creative spaces too.

Coloring Books Most kids love to color. Buying a new coloring book with a Ziploc bag of crayons may be a good way to keep little ones happy for a while. Try out the Crayola Color Wonder books with the mess free markers. They are perfect for kids who tend to color in more places than pages. They are also pretty fun because the color gets revealed as the marker is pressed on the paper. I Spy Books These books work best when played with an adult or older sibling. There are many versions of these, but usually, the ones with animals entertain kids the most. Try to find some with characters

Favorite Character Books AGES If your child loves Paw Patrol 3-6 or Disney princesses, find a couple of new books that include those characters and surprise them on the plane or in the car when a difficult moment comes along. There are many early reader books with characters from popular TV shows. You can check them out from your local library or buy some inexpensive ones online.

Mad Libs This classic fill in the blank game is perfect for the whole family. By writing in random parts of speech and plugging them into a story, your family is sure to come up with hilarious and creative stories. AGES Ultimate Road Trip Atlas 7-12

This is a fantastic book for a road trip. It provides easy to read road maps, photographs, roadside attractions, five cool things to do, wacky facts, and boredom busters for each state. The book also includes scavenger hunt games, look and find, license plate search, and a map of the United States. This is a colorful and engaging book that should keep your kids entertained while you travel. Where’s Waldo Another classic book, Where’s Waldo is great for kids to play anywhere. Kids can work together to find Waldo and his friends in various landscapes and scenery pages throughout the book. Once you are done finding Waldo, the back pages give you even more items

to find based on the location given. This is great to help kids pay attention to details and fosters teamwork to complete the checklists given. Travel Journals These can be fun depending on how detail oriented your child is. While there are many versions of travel journals, try to find ones that are interactive and ask questions about places you’ve seen. An area that includes space to draw and write about your day is also nice to have. These journals can be a great end of day wrap up to discuss the day’s activities, restaurants, and attractions. Word Search and Crossword Puzzle Books While there are many varieties of puzzle books, try finding one that is geared towards the location you will be visiting. There are countless activity books that focus on fun facts, attractions, and cities all over the world. These word search and crossword puzzles can be completed beforehand as a preview to the location or afterward as a culminating activity. Are We There Yet? This book by Rand McNally is filled with a variety of activities to keep kids laughing and thinking. Games include crossword puzzles, travel logs, connect the dots, car bingo, word scrambles, decoding puzzles, and what’s wrong with this picture activities. In addition, there are road trip songs with lyrics, travel game ideas, and hotel games to keep them singing and playing for hours. Keeping your kids happy while traveling is vital on a family vacation. HELP KEEP THE MEN IN YOUR LIFE HEALTHY BY SHARING THIS HANDY LIST WITH THEM Here’s the truth, most of us do not like going to the doctor but men are 24% less likely to visit a doctor than women. Also, most of the time men’s doctor visits are out of necessity due to injury or illness. Many issues can be prevented through health maintenance. It is very important that men see the doctor for regular checkups and routine preventative care. In honor of June being Men’s Health Month here are some startling facts about men’s health: THE BAD NEWS 1. Heart disease is the #1 killer of men. 1 out of 4 men have heart disease 2. 31% of men over the age of 20 have hypertension 3. Each year 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer 4. Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer among men ages 15-34 5. 4 out of 5 suicides are men 6. 33.6% of men over the age of 20 are obese 7. Men’s life expectancy is 6 years less than women’s 8. 12.4% of men over the age of 18 are in fair to poor health and men, on average, will live 9 years in poor health before seeking care 9. 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime

10. The average man will lose 5.4 teeth by the age of 72 Many of these statistics are so startling because they are preventable or can be treated quickly with routine doctor’s visits. According to the Center for Disease Control, genetics contribute to 30% of a person’s health while lifestyle contributes to 70% of a person’s health. Below are some guidelines for what men can be do to be healthier regardless of age. THE ADVICE 1. Exercise. Men who climb 50 stairs or walk 5 city blocks reduce their chance of a heart attack by 25% 2. Sleep. Men who sleep 7-8 hours a night reduce their chance of a heart attack by 60% 3. Fruits and Veggies. Men who eat 5-7 servings of fruits and/or veggies per day greatly reduce their chance of diabetes and heart disease 4. Drink Less. Men who consume less than 10 alcoholic beverages in a week reduce their chance of type 2 diabetes by half 5. Stop Smoking. Men who don’t smoke are at far less risk to develop hypertension and cancer 6. Go to the Dentist. Everyone

should go to the dentist every 6 months for routine cleanings and care to reduce the chance of major problems 7. Go to the Doctor. Going to the doctor for regular screenings will greatly reduce the chance of having major health issues or dying prematurely SCREENING BY THE DECADE In your 20’s and 30’s • Yearly physical examinations that check weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) • Talk to your doctor about family history of heart disease diabetes, mental illness, and/or any other concern you may have • Make sure vaccines are current such as tetanus (every 10 years) and flu (every year) • Talk to your doctor about the human papillomavirus (HPV) or hepatitis A&B vaccines • Ask about a sexual health screening • Learn how to correctly administer testicular cancer self-examines and administer them every 6 months • Also learn how to check for breast cancer because men get it too. • Get your blood pressure checked

In your 40’s • Continue to check in with doctor about any issues that many arise and your yearly physical • Get a cholesterol screening every 5 years • Get blood pressure checked yearly • See an optician every 2-4 years regardless of eyesight • Diabetes screenings should take place every 3 years • Talk to your doctor about colorectal cancer screenings as you may need to start them before the age of 50 if there is a family history or there are other health concerns

In your 50’s Colorectal cancer screenings are critical after the age of 50. • A fecal occult blood (stool-based) test done every year • A fecal immunochemical test (FIT) every year • A stool DNA test every 3 years • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years • Double contrast barium enema every 5 years • CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) every 5 years • Colonoscopy every 10 years

Suicide is now the 7th leading cause of death among men. 6 million men suffer from depression in the US. Men are also less likely to seek out help than women when it comes to mental health. If you are struggling, reach out and seek help.

Other screenings after 50 include: • Shingles and herpes zoster vaccinations are needed • Screenings for osteoporosis should be discussed • Prostate cancer screenings begin at age 50 • Lung cancer screenings should begin at age 55 for smokers
