Summer Camp! We get it, you’re still thinking about what to do for spring break or how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and here we are with our Summer Camp guide. Trust us, there is no such thing as too early. If you’re looking at a sleepaway camp, there is a bunch of research to do to find the right camp plus you need to book many months ahead of time. If it’s day camp you’re after, you have to decide whether you’re going to choose a “general” camp that your children will attend all summer or pull together a combination of specialty camps. In other words, camp planning is a lot of work.

We’re taking a lot of that work out of the planning with our March, April, and May issues. This month we kick things off with an article about California sleepaway camps. Jasmine Root found thirteen excellent sleepaway camps (including eight in the Monterey Bay area) and profiles them on pages 16-17. Jamie Lober spoke with several camp providers and offers their tips for getting your child ready for camp on page 14. Most importantly, we have detailed information on twenty-one of the best day camps for your children on pages 16-23. In April and May, we’ll have more information on summer camps. You can also find a directory of camps on our website at MontereyBayParent.com. Although we focus on camps this month, we haven’t ignored St. Patrick’s Day. Jasmine Root did a little research on the origins and found a few local activities to celebrate the big day. You’ll see her article on page 12. his year is flying by and like many of us, my family’s time in Monterey will soon (and sadly) be coming to an end. In my opinion, there is nothing like the life of a military family. Just when you become comfortable in your new area and establish your groove, it is time to move again with the opportunity to explore a new and different location.. This month, I want to focus on the Monterey Bucket List. Most of us feel incredibly lucky to be stationed in this area and have access to such amazing adventures. After a short drive, you can find yourself at Yosemite, Paso Robles, San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and the list goes on. As a Florida native, the west coast has been fascinating to me. It is so different from everything I am accustomed to. I love that there are so many different options for travel here. I encourage you to take advantage of Information, Tickets, and Travel (ITT), as they have amazing discounts for local attractions. Also, don’t forget to ask for a military discount. We were recent-

ly on a trip to Yosemite and stopped in Oakhurst at the south gate of Yosemite. I just happened to ask for a military discount, and sure enough, they offered one! Every little bit counts. With this month being Spring Break for NPS and Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, this is the perfect time to travel and cross a desired destination or two off of your bucket list. If you haven’t had a chance to attend a Corks & Forks Event at Naval Postgraduate School, I highly encourage you to mark this off your Monterey Bucket List. This is an excellent opportunity to learn history about the Hotel Del Monte and enjoy some delicious food and drinks with friends. We recently attended for my husband’s birthday. The event is a progressive one that moves around with different stations and food and wine pairings. The next event is on Wednesday, March 13th from 5:30-8: 00 pm. Tickets are $45 for military and $55 for the general public. All guests must be 21 years of age. Vis-

it ITT or the Trident Room to purchase tickets or call 831-656-7512. Another fun event that takes place every Wednesday from 4-7pm is Mongolian BBQ in the El Prado Dining Room. We just tried it for the first time, and it was so fun! You get to pick your ingredients to include meats, shrimp, veggies, etc. Then your bowl is weighed, you pay, and the chef prepares your meal. It’s super fun, and I love that you can customize it. Your meal comes with miso soup, rice, and noodles, too. If you guess the correct weight of your bowl, your lunch is free. No reservations are required. Another thing we love to do is play tourist in our own town. We love riding surrey bikes from Adventures by the Sea (they offer a military discount), making a stop for lunch at Wave Street Cafe, a visit to the aquarium or play in the sand at Lover’s Point. The adventures here are truly endless. If you haven’t had a chance to explore San Francisco yet, MWR is offering a day trip on Saturday, March 9 from 7am-7pm. You’ll get to explore Alcatraz and the city. Registration is required and can be made at ITT. This is a great way to avoid paying the crazy parking fees in downtown San Francisco. Wishing you and your family a wonderful March and hopefully, the rain and cold weather will turn into more days filled with sunshine! Brunch at Jeffrey’s because weekends are for relaxing! F or most families, weekdays are all about schedules and routines. As all parents know, those schedules make it possible for us to get our kids to school on time, get ourselves to work on time and to continue to accomplish the tasks needed to keep our world’s turning. Although these weekday practices have become key in setting our families up for success, it is just as important that we carve out some time for family fun and spontaneity. Some of the fondest family memories can be made gathered around a Sunday morning breakfast table, and in our household, a Sunday breakfast outing has become a perfect time to appreciate one another. One of our favorite breakfast discoveries is Jeffrey’s Grill and Catering located in Carmel’s Mid Valley Center. Everyone in the family can find a dish to enjoy at Jeffrey’s. One of my favorite meals is the delicious Classic Eggs Benedict, and I can honestly say that I have never experienced a better Benedict on the Peninsula! I use the term “experience,” because Jeffrey’s classic French hollandaise sauce is just that; a velvety blend of sweet cream butter, egg yolks, lemon juice, and just enough cayenne pepper to give the sauce a little heat on the finish. In addition to the Classic Benedict, a Not-SoClassic Benedict with smoked salmon and a decadent dill hollandaise sauce is perfect for a special occasion like a Sunday breakfast. A crab cakes benedict and calamari benedict is also on Jeffrey’s weekend special menu, and both dishes are perfect for a bit of selfindulgence!

Another popular special is the House Smoked Turkey Hash served with poached eggs, a lovely cranberry chutney, and Jeffrey’s famous hollandaise sauce. The turkey hash is prepared on Jeffrey’s open wood mesquite fire grill, which adds a sweet-earthy flavor to this dish. All of Jeffrey’s meats are prepared atop a mesquite grill, so even a simple side of bacon, ham, or sausage will be delightfully flavored. On top of having a variety of meal selections that adults are sure to enjoy, Jeffrey’s menu also offers many healthy choices that are kid-friendly. Our daughter loves Jeffrey’s seasonal fruit plate, yogurt, and homemade granola. My husband and I order the large fruit plate every time we eat at Jeffrey’s because it is always in season and delicious; a large plate of papaya, mango, pineapple, kiwi, and mixed berries that we all enjoy. Another menu item that passes our “toddler-test” is the Dollar Berrycakes. These mini pancakes are the perfect size for tiny tots. Nothing makes me more content than seeing our daughter happily enjoying her healthy meal, and eating her food, rather than playing with it! Jeffrey’s offers more than just fantastic food. Our family loves Jeffrey’s welcoming atmosphere. The service is friendly, quick, and accommodating for menu changes and substitutions. Additionally, there are highchairs available for little ones, and an outdoor seating area (pets welcome) if your family would like to soak up the Valley sun. After breakfast, if you are looking to continue the family fun, Jeffrey’s is only a

five-minute drive from a hike at Garland Ranch Regional Park or a nine-minute drive from some playtime at Carmel Valley Community Park. Both parks are free and a fabulous way to appreciate the beauty of Carmel Valley as a family. I am determined to carve out regular weekend family time because I know that a Sunday well spent starts the week off on the right foot. A later wake-up time followed by a leisurely breakfast at a great spot like Jeffrey’s is just the right recipe for our family! Jeffrey’s Grill and Catering is located at 112 Mid Valley Center, in Carmel CA. Operating hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed on Mondays. Toxic Masculinity– NO MORE

Raising Psychologically Healthy Boys

he role of fathers has changed. Today’s fathers are more involved, more available to their families, and more equal as a co-parent, according to a new report from the American Psychological Association (APA). This is a good thing! As noted in the report, greater father involvement with infants and young children is associated with advanced language development, fewer cognitive deficits, and fewer behavioral problems later in childhood. Father involvement with school-age children has been associated with increased academic achievement, better school attitudes, more literacy development, less depression and anxiety, higher levels of emotion regulations, and social adjustment. Even for adolescents, father involvement is related to healthier eating patterns, less depression, and anxiety (especially for daughters), higher selfesteem, less delinquency, and violent behaviors, better grades, and less substance use. All together, these findings show that the cumulative effects of father involvement have direct payoffs for children. However, the report also notes that a traditional masculine ideology, known as toxic masculinity, is bad for boys (and for men). This ideology

is a pattern of thinking and parenting of boys where the focus is on achievement, adventure and risk, and strength and self-reliance as well as violence, anti-femininity, and avoidance of perceptions of weakness. This ideology is reinforced by friends, family, peers, and society. And, it may not be a conscious decision to reinforce these expectations—it may just happen because of the culture in which we grew up. I am fortunate to find myself around lots of dads who are forging better practices with their sons and actively strive to counter some of these societal messages about how boys “should” be. Toxic masculinity has resulted in a range of social and psychological problems for boys. For example, boys are more likely to get diagnoses of learning disabilities and have behavior problems like bullying and aggression. Boys (and men) learn to express emotional distress through outward, destructive behaviors and fail to discover ways of expressing and coping with challenges in healthier ways. The emphasis from an early age to be self-reliant, strong, and independent prevents boys from getting the help they need. Also, boys who act outside of these expected norms by being passive or crying, for example, receive more physical and verbal

abuse from peers. These pathways are not fixed. There are ways to change and avoid falling into this traditional masculine ideology. Perhaps, you’ve seen the controversial media ad by Gillette giving examples of traditional masculine behaviors and stating the need to change with the tagline of “We believe the best in men.” The ad depicts bullying among boys, teasing, sexual harassment, “mansplaining,” condoning of behavior with “boys with boys” among other behaviors. But, the ad also poignantly shows the intervention of dads on boys’ behaviors, on what they say, and on how to act in the future and ends with how men can do better in raising boys and in modeling better behavior. Now, ultimately, I know that the intent is to sell razors, but the imagery and sentiments are powerful, make clear that these types of destructive behaviors can be changed, and make an impact on these boys developing into men. I remain optimistic that fatherhood continues to change for the better. I think that men are moving in the direction to right the wrongs of the past in how they may have been raised and how they now want their children to be raised. I talked to one father of boys aged five and seven who said that he’s raising his boys not to be good “men” but to be good people. He has moved away from the machismo under which he grew up and is trying to create a balance between healthy risks and communication for his boys. Few would disagree that characteristics of achievement, adventure, self-reliance, strength, and risk-taking are undoubtedly desirable in shaping children to become adults. However, the positive aspects wither without including collaboration, communication, emotional expression, and a broad look at what it means to be masculine. Fathers, together, we can take the toxic out of masculinity and let boys thrive as they become better men. Robert (Rob) S. t’s March! For many of us in the US that means one thing, St. Patrick’s Day! It is a call to celebrate shamrocks, leprechauns, and everything Irish. St. Patrick’s Day, for many, is the day to celebrate Irish heritage through dance, song, and camaraderie. For me, St. Patrick’s Day is the smell of peat bricks burning in my grandparents’ fireplace and spending time with family. History of St. Patrick’s Day The day is celebrated on the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick, March 17th. The Irish celebrated it as a purely religious holiday for over 1,000 years. It wasn’t until 1762 that St. Patrick’s Day began to take shape as the holiday we know it as today. The Irish soldiers who were serving in the English military during the Revolutionary War marched down the streets of New York City. They were playing music and dancing to reconnect to their roots and bring Irish pride to the city. These celebrations spread throughout the country over the next 50 years supported by Irish Aid Societies that promoted Irish heritage. Cities such as Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and Savannah began to have large parades with 10,000 to 20,000 attendants.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations only continued to grow after the potato famine in Ireland in 1845 in which 1 million Irish emigrated to the United States. The holiday served as a connection to the homeland for many Irish people and a beacon at the end of cold winters. Ten Interesting Facts About St. Patrick’s Day 1. In Ireland, St Patrick’s Day is a national holiday where banks, stores, and businesses close for the day. 2. St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish, he was born in Britain in A.D. 390 and was never canonized by the pope making his status as a saint questionable. 3. The original color of St. Patrick’s Day was blue, and the shift to green is credited with Ireland’s nickname of “The Emerald Isle.” 4. The legend of the four-leaf clover is that the four leaves symbolize “hope, faith, love, and luck.” 5. 1962 was the first time Chicago dyed their river green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day 6. There is a National Leprechaun Museum in Dublin, Ireland that hosts tours in both the day and

Women’s History Month

Building Self Esteem in our Daughters

Women’s History Month is held annually in March to celebrate the valuable contributions women have made over the years.

t is essential to help your daughter build positive self-esteem because it can have a significant impact on her motivation and success in life. The American Academy of Pediatrics found that self-esteem is shaped by both the child’s perceptions and expectations as well as the perceptions and expectations of significant people in her life. They named a sense of security, belonging, purpose, personal competence, and pride, trust, responsibility, contributions, making real choices and decisions, self-discipline and selfcontrol, encouragement, support, reward, accepting mistakes and failure and family self-esteem as factors that can influence how your daughter feels about herself. On her own schedule Every girl develops self-esteem at her own rate. Sometimes things like difficulties at home or poor role models can get in the way of developing a healthy self-worth. It is your job as a parent to offer guidance and encouragement. The American Psychological Association suggested listening to your child. Remember that while you may have dreams for her, she has her own and they deserve to be respected and supported even if she makes some mistakes along the way. It is not about how many times your daughter may fall but rather that you are always there to help her get back up. Let her know she is valued Praise your daughter at every opportunity whether it is an achievement or just an attempt at success. Make her feel valued by asking questions and seeking her opinion when appropriate. Try not to compare your daughter to other people and treat her as an individual. Set realistic expectations and understand that nobody is perfect. Encourage her individuality You want to do your best to find out what interests her and encourage her

to pursue those things. If your child likes music, you may motivate her to pick up an instrument and later perform in a band or at recitals to feel a greater sense of accomplishment and acceptance. It is just as important to feel accepted out and about in society as at home. Finding ways to volunteer with causes your daughter cares about is another rewarding avenue to build selfesteem. Give her time to grow Schedule time that your daughter can do things that make her happy both with you and alone. If she spends time doing things she likes, she is more likely to have a positive mindset. Do not forget to celebrate small victories as there is no better way to build self-confidence. When you are a champion for your daughter and see that she has a group of peers who cheer her on just the same, she is on the path to being another amazing woman who is bound to make history one day down the road. Preparing For A Positive Camp Experience

aking sure your child has a great experience at summer camp is a priority whether it is his first time or fifth time. The key is to find out what your child wants to do, give him options and let him have a voice in the process. Making Learning Fun Camp can be an excellent way to make learning fun. “It is an educational opportunity and chance for kids to grow and hone their craft whether it is ballet, jazz, contemporary, musical theater, cheer, hip-hop or acrobatics and to meet students from other areas,” said Laura Jesselnick, co-owner of Dance Center Summer Camps. When you as a parent speak fondly of camp, your child will pick up on it. “Have an excited and positive attitude at home and instill it in him because sometimes the child can experience anxiousness about meeting new people and trying new things,” said Jesselnick. Dr. Mike Gibbs, CEO of Camp Biz Smart says “Summer camp is a real chance to try out new skills, make interesting friends and gain the confidence that anything is possible.” Summer camps help children to learn social skills, encourage personal growth by exposing them to new adventures and situations and let them unplug not only from screen time but also the rigor of everyday school life. children an easier transition to school by introducing them to a schedule, group learning, and interacting with children from different backgrounds.” Discuss the Options If your child is unsure about whether camp is a good idea, talk it out. “Camp is part of a maturing and learning process and you want him to recognize that new does not need to cause anxiousness or be scary, but you can validate those feelings,” said Jesselnick. It’s OK to be a little nervous Having mixed emotions is normal but focus on what he will gain. Some of the best camp experiences involve finding things your child has not tried before. Specialized camps can foster some lifelong skills such as a camp focused on theater can help with public speaking and self-esteem. “A mother said that last year her child was nervous, could not look up and was terrified of the experience when she had to give an oral presentation but after theater camp her head was up, she projected her voice, and she was so grateful,” said Gail Higginbotham, artistic director at ARIEL Theatrical Summer Camp. Verbal skills can reach a whole new level after getting involved with the performing arts. “The arts are a wonderful venue for the child’s music, movement and exploring different ways of communicating as you are enabling him with the tools for self-expression in a positive way,” said Jesselnick. Camp should make your child feel good about himself. “Children learn team-building,

self-confidence and how to be the best versions of themselves,” said Jesselnick. It is a prime opportunity for growth. Offer lots of encouragement The best thing you can do is be encouraging. “Have your child bring a good attitude and realize that you have to practice and be focused, but those are skills you need in school, in a job, or anywhere you go in life,” said Higginbotham. Make sure your child knows he is unique and do not compare him to others. Encourage a positive attitude Encourage your child to be optimistic about the summer experience to come. Gibbs says: “A campers experience will be most memorable when they come with the zest and readiness to learn, a sense of determination, and a can do optimistic spirit. When they do that, great things will happen!!” According to camp director Andy Pritikin (writing in an article on The American Camp Association website at www.acacamps.org) ”Camp is like a vitamin supplement containing the vital things our kids’ lives are missing: Face-to-face interactions, collaborating together in groups, and navigating the ups and downs of relationships. It’s also a place where kind, caring people other than parents help teach them the skills of life like making friendships, using integrity, self-regulation and independence.
