The first Mother’s day I remember included serving my mom cornflakes with water (we had run out of milk the night before) and a gift of a pair of pantyhose (yes, pantyhose) that my sister and I had retrieved from the trash and wrapped in newspaper. I’d guess I was 3 or 4 and we knew this day was special to our single mom but weren’t quite sure how to commemorate it. My sister and I did the best we could, and my mom gamely ate a few tablespoons of cornflakes before taking us for a proper breakfast at the little diner in our neighborhood.

I do not doubt that my mother remembered that day with more than a little joy. Because that’s what moms do and who we are–most days being a mom isn’t about the thank you’s but occasionally? It sure does feel nice even if it’s watery cereal and a used gift.

Motherhood doesn’t always have the easiest start. For mothers with postpartum issues, those first months can be brutal. Tara Tudisco tackles the subject of maternal mental health in her article on pages 14-15. SLAM Monterey (and Tara!) will be participating in a local Climb Out of Darkness event on May 11. What Our “Military Mom” Will Miss

S

pring is upon us, and the saying, “April Showers turn to May Flowers” is undoubtedly true here on the Peninsula. We had our fair share of rain earlier in the year, so I know we are all rejoicing over the beautiful weather so we can get our kids back outside!

It has been such a pleasure to write the Military Mom column during our time in Monterey, but like anything, all good things must come to an end. The military is moving my family to Florida this summer as my husband completes his Master’s Program at the Naval Postgraduate School. I have loved meeting so many wonderful moms and families through the magazine, and a big thank you to Andrea Breznay for creating this publication and allowing me to share with all of you.

As we graduate, many new military families will be arriving and starting their tour in Monterey. If you are a new military family reading this, I encourage you to get connected with other moms by joining the Monterey Bay Parent Magazine Facebook Group. The magazine provides a calendar of local activities and events that are so wonderful when you are learning the new ropes of a new area.

For my last Military Mom article, I am going to highlight some of my Monterey favorites!

My Museum. We have loved our membership, and at $100 for the year, it is a fantastic deal. We love going after I pick my daughter up from school from 4-closing. If you want to check it out at a reduced rate, the 1st Tuesday of the month is only $2 per person.

Lover’s Point. We’ve lived in Hawaii and Florida, so we are used to warm weather, sun and the beach.

Lover’s Point is a fantastic place to hang out on a sunny and warm day. The best part? It’s free! Bring your sand toys and a picnic and enjoy the beauty of our area!

Doe Park Super Park. Located in Fort Ord-Doe Park military community, this park is my daughter’s favorite and usually less crowded than other area parks!

Folktale Winery. If you need some sun in your life, Folktale is the place to go. Located in Carmel Valley, it is the perfect place to spend the day with your entire family (pets included). Don’t forget to ask for the military discount.

I would also highly recommend joining their wine club if you plan to visit often. It will pay for itself very quickly!

The Farm in Salinas. We loved visiting the Farm for their events, story time and their yummy produce and food. From hayrides to

the petting zone to cutting our fresh flowers, The Farm has so much to offer!

• Monterey Bay Recreational Trail.

Walking or running the Rec Trail never gets old. You never know what you will see in terms of wildlife, and there are plenty of excellent stops for a quick bite or beverage. If you are feeling adventurous, I highly suggest renting a surrey bike. We like to rent these when we have visitors in from out of town, and the kids love it! Adventures by the Sea rents these bikes and they offer a military discount.

• Big Sur River Inn. If you are up for a journey down the beautiful coast, I highly suggest stopping at the Big Sur River Inn to play in the river. Some of my fondest memories include putting on rain boots and stomping around in the river with my daughter. They have a restaurant and snack shop on site and plenty of Adirondack chairs to rest and relax in.

Whether you are here in Monterey for six months or 5 years, I hope you enjoy the beautiful Central Coast as much as my family did. I highly recommend making a bucket list so you can be sure to visit all of the beautiful places in the area.

Although the second Sunday in May has been designated as Mother’s Day, the appreciation should continue every day.

M

others are the original multitaskers—for example, answering questions, wiping chins, preparing food, and keeping the household organized among the other myriad tasks that mothers handle with strength and resilience. Nowadays, being a parent comes with a lot of stressors from others’ judging looks and the pressures of comparisons from social media. But, the worst targets are mothers. Mothers are judged all the time for their kids’ behavior, the achievements of their children, the cleanliness of the household, and even their appearance in ways that fathers are never judged to the same degree (or, maybe, at all). Now, I like to think I’m a bit more egalitarian with my wife in raising our daughter but know that the praise heard that I’m an involved father doesn’t get applied to my wife as an involved mother. The expectation is that mothers handle it all. Like most mothers, she does more than

her share of the caretaking and other household responsibilities. And, like most fathers, I let it happen. Research has consistently found that, even when men say they do half of the household chores, women still do more, including a disproportionate amount of time caring for children. I am aware that I benefit from the fact that the middleof-the-night nightmares result in a call for Mommy.

As a father on Mother’s Day, my job is to ensure that I acknowledge all that my wife does as a person and, particularly, as a mother. I also make sure that my daughter does something to recognize her mother. None of these activities have to be extravagant.

I ensure our little one makes some sort of card, and we often conspire together on purchasing a gift. However, because my daughter cannot keep a secret, I have to wait until the last minute for any purchase to provide some element of the ceremony of gift giv-

ing and specialness needed for Mother’s Day. I also try to insert other “gifts” in the day to recognize her dedication to raising our daughter and taking care of all of us. Sometimes, it is cooking a special breakfast, going out to breakfast, managing meals later in the day, or being in charge of shuttling our kid to activities already scheduled. Another gift can be just time alone or the ability to shop or cook alone, uninterrupted.

Sometimes, it is making the little decisions, so she doesn’t have to. Given that her attention is regularly pulled towards my daughter or other tasks, having time where her attention is only controlled by her can be the best gift of all.

The irony of today’s Mother’s Day is how different Mother’s Day has become from its origins. Mother’s Day began as mothers’ work days in 1858 when Anna Reeves Jarvis organized others to improve sanitation in rural West Virginia. During the Civil War, she

worked to organize care for wounded on both sides of the war, and after the war, she brought together former enemy soldiers to discuss peace.

In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, writer of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” created Mothers’ Day of Peace, advocating peaceful actions with other mothers.

At the time, mothers were seen as having a moral authority, mobilized public protest and lobbying, and were able to advocate for temperance, antislavery, consumer protection, working conditions, and social welfare (and were heard). Anna Reeves Jarvis’s daughter, also named Anna, lobbied Congress to set aside a day to honor mothers in contrast to all the days honoring men. In 1914, Congress set aside the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. The attention of mothers towards social justice issues around this day was eroded by marketers and anti-reformers pushing mothers’ roles as regulators of their households only and leaving societal ills to be addressed by politicians (i.e., men). Furthermore, Anna Jarvis became outraged at the commercial exploitation of Mother’s Day and tried to reverse the holiday up until she passed away. Nonetheless,

I would not suggest the focus of the holiday be neglected.

I should also mention attending to one’s own mother. When I worked as a therapist and had young people come in to discuss their relationship troubles, I would often ask how the romantic partner treats his or her mother. There is some support that the way one treats his or her mother is the way one will treat his or her romantic partner. So, if a romantic partner is dismissive, derisive, and belittling of his or her mother, then one can expect the same. If someone is respectful, communicative, and open, then one can expect the same in return in the

romantic relationship. Now, I know that mother-child relationships are complicated and can accrue a lot of baggage over time for adult children.

For my daughter, though, she only knows the present and sees how I interact with, talk about, and treat my own mother. I am fortunate to have a relatively good relationship with my mother and always make sure that my daughter sees me acknowledge my mother on Mother’s Day as well.

I guess the bottom line is that Mother’s Day is about fathers being sure that mothers get recognition for their hard work, in the past, in the present, and in the future.

10 WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD STAY FOCUSED

Finish the School Year Strong Longer days. Beautiful weather. Children itching for summer. In the middle of spring, it’s hard to keep kids focused on school. But you may find that a strong finish now will lead to a good start in a new school year in the fall. Here are 10 tips to keep your child on the path to the finish line.

1.

Send the message that school is a priority.

Communicate to children that school is important. Continue to read with them, ask about homework, and take an interest in what they are learning.

Research one of their school topics to extend the discussion at home or visit the library to find more books.

2.

Set a goal.

Help your child set an academic goal they can achieve during the last weeks of school. Maybe they

want to turn a B into an A, learn all their multiplication tables or read a thousand pages. If they meet their goal, reward them with something simple like ice cream or a new school supply or book.

3.

Stay on Schedule.

Kids crave structure and knowing what to expect, so spring is a good time to keep routines like homework time, dinner time, and bed time. With spring sporting events like late baseball games and neighborhood pick-up

games, it is hard to keep kids on track.

But make a conscious effort to do it as much as possible.

4.

Replace supplies.

By now your child’s notebooks, folders, pencils and crayons probably look worn out. Replacing these inexpensive items can be a pick-me-up that motivates your child. However, try to save big purchases like back packs and lunchboxes for the new school year.

5.

Set up an outdoor classroom.

Sometimes changing location gives a child that second wind they need to make it to the finish line. Let children do homework outdoors for rewards while they work. When math problems are completed correctly, they can take a walk or ride bikes.

When done reading, they can pass the football or shoot hoops. Observe the family garden during study breaks.

There’s no reason why your kids can’t do their homework sitting on a blanket at the beach!

6.

Hold an end of the year countdown.

There are many ways to count down

the days until the end of the school year. Mark off days on a calendar or put Popsicle sticks or marbles in a jar and remove one each day, or share a special treat. For each child in your house, fill a container with Hershey’s kisses that match the number of days left. “Kiss” the last days of school goodbye with one countdown chocolate each evening when they kids finish their homework.

7.

Thank the teacher.

Teachers work hard, and it’s good to show appreciation for them. With all the end of the school year events, planning to show the teacher thanks may get shoved to the bottom of the to-do list, so plan ahead. Teachers love gift cards to their favorite teacher store, coffee house or restaurant, or donations of books or school supplies.

And gifts don’t have to cost money.

Handwritten notes and cards are treasured by teachers.

8.

Get next year’s supply list.

If you receive next year’s list before the end of the school year, post it on the refrigerator, and when supplies go on sale during the summer, be ready to purchase them.

9.

Clean out the backpack on the last day.

It’s easy to throw the backpack in the corner and not think about it again until school starts in the fall. Resist that temptation, and clean it out the last day that your child uses it. You may find important papers, a note from the teacher, or unused school supplies.

Designate a place for the supplies, and go “shopping” in your leftovers before purchasing new supplies for the next year.

10.

Celebrate.

Have a dance party in your living room, picnic at the park or create a special family dinner. Enjoy a cookout with a backyard projector movie or visit the neighborhood pool.

If in doubt, ask the kids. They’ll give great input about how they want to start their summer break!

If you’re struggling on what to get your mom or that special aunt or grandmother, here are ten unique gift ideas to show them some extra love on Mother’s Day. A Special Weekend Getaway If budget is not much of a concern, then maybe splurge on a girls’ weekend getaway with mom. You wouldn’t even have to go far. You can choose a nearby city like San Francisco to play tourist and find some fun activities you would like to do with your mom. Relaxing by the pool, beach or spa might be something you both would enjoy. If you are more active, then maybe try a nearby state or national park for some hiking and outdoor fun.

A Special Event or Experience Maybe an idea for a Mother’s Day gift is tickets to an upcoming concert, sports game, Broadway show or a food tour nearby. Whatever the interest, there are special experiences available if you scour the Internet for local activities. Checking Ticketmaster or specialty sites may be helpful for planning purposes.

Personalized Gift on Etsy Etsy is the king of personalized gift creation. The key is finding the right one that mom will love. On this marketplace, you can customize anything from a necklace to a pillow, to an ornament or even a photo creation. Frames with pictures of grandchildren or a great family picture could be the key to starting a unique

personalized gift. Personalized state gifts (like mugs and wall art) are becoming popular too. The options are endless on Etsy. Once you start browsing, you may get sucked in and buy all sorts of fun items.

Kitchen Accessories Many moms spend their time in the kitchen, and while many have the basics needed to make breakfast, lunch, and dinner, few will really splurge on a non-essential item.

Try to bring up some type of food conversation with your mom and see if you can “fish” for what item needs replacing or which is on her wish list. Instant Pots have been on high demand lately, but your mom could just need a new all-purpose knife or skillet.

There are a variety of monthly subscriptions that deliver items straight to your door. Some options include beer, wine, cookies, makeup, beauty/ skin products, and outdoor gear.

Magazine subscriptions are also a unique idea. You could sign your mom up for a year’s subscription of food/ wine, home decor, gardening, or travel magazine.

Technology Depending on your mom’s preferences, maybe she wouldn’t be opposed to some technology in her life. A simple start could be a fitness/ step tracker. By keeping track of her steps, it could motivate mom to lead a healthier lifestyle. Other popular and inexpensive technology items could

be Amazon’s Fire Stick or Echo Dot. If your mom already has Amazon Prime, the Fire Stick could be another way for her to watch TV, while the Echo can provide simple audio reminders and timers to facilitate home life.

Specialty Food Item Does your mom love sourdough bread? What about blue cheese?

Sometimes moms will not spend money on an expensive version of an item because they know they do not need it. Buying your mom that expensive olive oil or specialty chocolate bar may just be the small token she isn’t expecting.

Towels or Bath Products Bathroom items are not the usual gifts; however, if your mom has not updated her hand towels or bath towels in years, a refresh might be an unexpected treat. Check out the color scheme in her bathroom, and find some matching or complimentary colors that would work. A nicely scented soap bar could also be a treat, as most of the time people buy in bulk at the grocery store.

Talking About POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

I

n recent years, postpartum depression has become a very recognizable term. Still, many women suffer in silence due to either the stigma that’s glued itself to conditions of mental health or a misunderstanding or inability to recognize their struggles. The month of May is a time to celebrate mothers. It’s also an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the importance of maternal mental health and the one in five women who experience such disorders like postpartum depression.

According to the Blue Dot Project, “Maternal Mental Health (MMH) disorders include a range of disorders including depression, anxiety, and psychosis and can occur within pregnancy or the postpartum period (together often referred to as the perinatal period). When left untreated, these disorders can cause devastating consequences for the mother, her baby, her family, and society.”

Whether it’s you or a loved one, there are resources for help, local communities passionate for this cause, and lifestyle changes to support your overall mental health.

The first step to healing from any MMH condition is to get informed. The Blue Dot Project and its sister organization, Postpartum Support International (PSI) are a fantastic resource to learn about MMH conditions. The purpose of thebluedotproject.org is to raise awareness of MMH and to lift any shame from stigmas surrounding MMH. gin. It’s free, confidential and the representatives can help guide you to take next steps along your journey to healing. They have numerous free resources including live, anonymous chat sessions facilitated by licensed mental health professionals and open to anyone with questions and concerns (dads, this includes you)!

For a lot of women, one of the primary obstacles to seeking mental health support is fear of what will happen if they tell someone about the scary thoughts and feelings they’re having. Thoughts about intentionally harming the baby. Thoughts about not wanting to be a mom. The specific thoughts may vary, but there can be a lot of apprehension about whether their baby could be taken from them or if they could be put in the psych ward as a result of disclosing these thoughts. This are very understandable fears but ultimately untrue. A mother (or father) who is having frightening thoughts, is concerned about them, and seeks help is insightful. Seeking help is a smart and courageous step to take.

Carolyn Bloye, PsyD, a Licensed Psychologist from Monterey says: “The second thing I think is important for new parents to know is that postpartum depression exists, and so does postpartum anxiety — worries about accidentally hurting the baby. Intrusive imag-

es of the baby getting hurt and ruminating about every possible thing that could hurt the baby and trying to prevent them all. These symptoms can be just as distressing and disruptive as postpartum depression. I hope new parents will know that these symptoms are common and treatable.”

From a lifestyle perspective, there are many habits you can implement to maintain your current, good mental health or to support you along your journey to healing. Keeping up your fitness per your doctor’s recommendation, prioritizing a healthy diet loaded with while, nutrient-dense, plant foods and taking time for self-care are generally inexpensive ways to maintain and help your good mental health. Physical activity and nutrition have a direct impact on mental health and practices like journaling, meditation (even walk-

ing meditation), and yoga can be powerful during pregnancy and postpartum, but also anytime throughout your life. Self-care can be as simple as carving out time for a lavender bath every evening. Remember that as a mama or mama to be, you are better for everyone when you’ve taken time for yourself.

Whether you’re newly pregnant or months postpartum, look for a supportive community to include as part of your positive lifestyle. Stroller Strong Moms Monterey and Stroller Warriors are great for keeping active and surrounding yourself with a supportive group of women in a similar season of life. As a member of SLAM Monterey, I know the positive impact of being part of such a community.

Alison Bogan, a yoga instructor for Stroller Strong Moms Monterey, and mom of three shares her advice: “For many moms, finding a tribe to belong to can help ease feelings of anxiety, depression and social isolation, which is why Stroller Strong Moms has been so amazing for so many other moms and me in the Monterey area. But we also want moms to know that there is help available if exercise and connection with other moms are not enough!

We want moms and dads to seek help, to reach out to talk with a professional that understands what they are going through, or to seek help from organizations like the Parenting Connection of Monterey County or Postpartum Support International or any mental health professional. Many people don’t know that the Parenting Connection of Monterey County operates a confidential bi-lingual warm line (831-783-5933) and pregnancy and postpartum support groups in Marina, Pacific Grove, and Salinas. We want moms and dads to know that they don’t need to suffer alone, that there is help.”

MMH affects the entire family and your community. Moms and Dads at any stage in parenthood should know they are not alone, their feelings are valid and that with the help they can heal and enjoy their life and new, beautiful family.

May is Foster Care Month The goal of Foster Care Awareness Month is to promote awareness about the foster care crisis in our communities and try to recognize ways to support children and youth who need foster homes. Monterey County has about 400 children in need of foster care. These children need loving families to help nurture and positively guide them in life.

rganizations like Kinship Center assist in the foster care process by offering programs designed to support both children and families. Carol Bishop, regional executive director of Kinship Center, explains how the goal of these programs is to place children in permanent family situations. “Our Family Ties program provides support to relatives raising their kin children – mostly grandparents raising their grandchildren – by providing case management, support groups, family recreational activities, emergency assistance, resource referral and assistance with legal guardianship. Our Placement Program provides foster care and adoption services”.

While foster care is usually temporary, the goal of places like

Kinship Center is to place children in safe, loving, and permanent homes, and also to offer professional support, counseling and mental health services for all involved. Bishop states that mental health counseling helps to support children and their families by assisting them in healing from early trauma and working to improve family relationships and communication.

California recently adopted a new term for foster care families. They are now referred to as resource families.

A resource family becomes the primary caregivers that provide out of home care for children in foster care. Monterey County Family to Family (F2F) is an organization that works with public and private partners to increase awareness about the needs of resource fam-

ilies and foster children. By law, all resource families are required to successfully meet approval standards through the RFA (Resource Family Approval) process.

In order to start this process, all applicants for foster care and adoption attend an informational meeting where they are given details about the process and support they will receive from the state and placement center.

Once they submit the application and provide the supporting documents, there is a required training session.

Bishop notes that “once they begin the actual application process, they attend 30 hours of training designed to prepare them for parenting children who have experienced trauma and loss before a child is placed with them.”

Each family must go through a home study process of interviews and assessments by a social worker to ensure that they have the best chance of success. Once a child is placed with them, the resource family will

have the support of their social worker and whatever other professionals they need to help them. Organizations like Monterey County Family to Family and Kinship Center help provide various support services that guide children and families on a positive path.

These services include parent coaching, support groups, classes for parents, and access to mental health clinics. Even after the adoption process is final, families can continue to attend support groups and access these services if needed.

During the month of May, agencies do more to raise public awareness about fostering and adoption services, as well as renew their commitment to ensuring a better future for children in foster care.

There are many other ways can people help with the foster care crisis in Monterey besides fostering or adoption. Bishop urges people to “learn about fostering and adoption, and educate others about the need for foster and adoptive parents for children in our own community.” One of the easiest ways people can help is to “attend events that support our work on behalf of children. Volunteer to tutor or mentor a foster child, and maybe look into becoming a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate).” She says that people can also check with the Monterey County Department of Social Services to see what opportunities are offered to be of assistance to foster youth. The hope is that by becoming more educated about foster care, people will do more to get involved in the lives of these youths.
