Back to School! For some parents, August is “the most wonderful time of the year” (cue the Staples commercial’s catchy theme). For others, back to school is a bittersweet milestone as their children move up a grade and one step closer to being grown up. Whatever your feelings about back to school, the time has come! Parents all across Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties are shopping for school clothing, buying supplies, going over bus schedules and getting their children ready for the 201819 school year. I hope your next few weeks are smooth and your children transition from summer to school as easily as possible. We are celebrating back to school with two interview articles. Nicole Amaral spoke with four local teachers who were all raised and educated in Monterey County. They chose to stay here for their teaching careers, and the thousands of students they’ve worked with are grateful. Read about these accomplished teachers on pages 10-13. Katie Raquel spoke with three mothers who went back to school as adults. Katie shares their inspirational journey on pages 14-15. But, we’re not giving up on summer just yet! If you’re an amusement park fan, you’ll enjoy our article on pages 16-17. We’re sharing our five favorite roller coasters. There is lots of time left to get in a few rides. We also have fifty summer fun suggestions on page 18. If you’ve made it to August without running out of ideas, kudos. If you need a few to get you through the rest of the summer, turn to page 18. Finally, August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Allison Chance has some excellent information on where to turn for advice and support on pages 8-9. To celebrate, we’re giving away a breastfeeding support package worth almost $300. You’ll find all the details on page 9. To enter, go to our website at MontereyBayParent.com and click on contests. We’ll be choosing a random winner at the end of August to get this valuable prize. A quick reminder, our September issue is our annual “Arts Issue.” We will have all kinds of useful information about the local arts scene for children and parents. If you’d like your arts-related business or organization to be included, please call 831-582-1373. We want the issue to be as filled with information as possible and need your participation! It’s National Breastfeeding Awareness Month!

Latch onto Breastfeeding Here are some tips from fellow nursing mothers: • See an IBCLC in the hospital before you are discharged home to ensure you have a proper latch. • Set small breastfeeding goals (2 weeks, then one month, then three months, etc.). • Always have water with you to stay hydrated. • Be persistent; it will get better! • Snack on lactation cookies and raw almonds. Local mom, Grace, bakes her homemade lactation cookies, “Seeds of Grace.” They are delicious and help increase supply. Email gslama78@gmail.com to place your order. • Meet other moms through support groups like La Leche League and local mom’s groups.

A

ugust was deemed National Breastfeeding Awareness Month in 2004, by the Office of Women’s Health, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose was to empower and encourage mothers to commit to breastfeeding by providing new research that babies who are exclusively breastfed for six months are less likely to develop health issues such as respiratory illnesses and childhood obesity. As a mother of two children, with one born earlier this year, I have been so grateful for the support provided by the local community, doctors, and other mothers. Breastfeeding is like a rollercoaster, there are highs and lows and twists and turns, both emotionally and physically. Besides giving birth, it has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life knowing that my body can provide the perfect food to nourish my baby. I am blessed and honored to be able to nurse my children, as I know all moms are not. Robin Nickerson, a Registered

Nurse and IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, believes that knowledge is power. She highly suggests taking a class and thinks it will set you up for success when it comes to breastfeeding. CHOMP offers a free two and a half hour “Breastfeeding Success” class which focuses on prenatal preparation, problem prevention and strategies for success. When a problem arises with your breastfeeding journey, Robin encourages you to address it immediately. Many moms struggle longer than they should. She says, “When in doubt, check it out.” For moms who deliver at the CHOMP Family Birth Center, they can continue to see the lactation consultants on staff after discharge. The Monterey Peninsula also has a Lactation Support Warm Line (831-625-4987) open to all local moms who need breastfeeding support. Tricia Williams, a Registered Nurse, IBCLC and New Parent Support Home Visitor with the Fleet and Family Support Center is another ex-

cellent resource for the many military families that are stationed in the Monterey area. Tricia can come into your home, has a scale for weighted feeds and can provide support and resources to new moms. One of the things she likes to point out to moms is the importance of a proper latch. She also advises moms to be aware that weight loss in a newborn is typical, especially if IV fluids were given to the mother or if there was an induction with Pitocin or a cesarean section. Camilla Miller is an IBCLC who offers breastfeeding support to families on the Monterey Peninsula and is the owner of Monterey Bay Lactation. She also facilitates a support group called “Growing Together” that

A baby nursing at a mother’s breast... is an undeniable affirmation of our rootedness in nature. – David Suzuki meets every Friday at 10:00 am at the Monterey Birth and Wellness Center. Camilla said, “I have seen the families that come to Growing Together bond and blossom as they meet their babies needs through breastfeeding and their own needs by supporting each other. Together they have celebrated milestones, gotten through difficulties, shared laughter and tears, and cheered each on. It’s never too early or too late to find a supportive network - our group welcomes your family no matter where you are in your nursing journey.” For more information, visit www.montereybaylactation.com.

The La Leche League of the Monterey Peninsula hosts an online forum on Facebook and also meets monthly and is a peer-to-peer support group. Accredited La Leche League Leaders will also present monthly topics including benefits of breastfeeding, bringing home baby, avoiding difficulties, nutrition, and weaning. Other resources including a lending library, email, phone and online support. Meetings are free, and yearly memberships are optional ($20). Donations are appreciated. More meeting locations and times visit: www.facebook.com/groups/LLLMP/ Natividad Hospital in Salinas offers a Lactation Clinic that offers breastfeeding support to new and expecting mothers, regardless of where the baby was born. They take appointments seven days a week. The hospital also has a team of six internationally board-certified consultants who offer private, oneon-one consultations for breastfeeding support, including pumping and storing milk. Breastfeeding is a journey, and it is different for every mom, but one thing that is for sure is that we can all learn from one another. As always, fed is best, whether it be exclusive breastfeeding, donor breast milk, exclusive pumping, formula or a combination of the above, a happy and fed baby correlates to a happy and healthier mom. Allison Chance is a military spouse and mom to Charlotte, 4, and Hux, 4 months. She is a Realtor and has been lucky to call Florida, Hawaii, and now California home during her family’s military adventure.

Home Grown Teachers

I

know first-hand how fulfilling teaching can be. Before beginning my career with Monterey Bay Parent Magazine, I worked as a middle/ high school teacher for nine years. I earned my Master’s Degree in Education, and for seven years I facilitated courses online. I took my Real Estate Broker’s exam in 2009 and then added another side job as a fitness instructor in 2011. When my son was born in 2013, I decided to end my full-time teaching career. I understand why many people who are raised in Monterey County choose to stay here. I was born in Monterey and have spent my lifetime staying close to the area I love. I spoke with four teachers who were born and raised in Monterey County and choose to give back to the community by educating the new generation. The overwhelming desire to help students paired with love for family and for Monterey County are common threads among all of the educators featured.

Stephanie DaSilva Being a Monterey native, I feel like I know almost everyone in town. Stephanie DaSilva was someone I had corresponded with in the past but did not know personally. Stephanie is the eldest of five children. Like my husband’s parents, hers are both full Portuguese, and she is proud of her rich heritage. Her husband is also 100% Portuguese, and they have three school-aged children. Stephanie’s husband is from San Jose and had many fond memories of vacationing in Monterey as a child, so living here was an easy sell. “The beauty around us, the ideal climate and the support of family were all huge influences.” Stephanie attended San Carlos School for K-8th, Santa Catalina for high school, and then received her Bachelor’s Degree at St. Mary’s College with a double major in Liberal and Civic Studies and Spanish. Stephanie attained herby Multiple Subject Nicole Amaral

Credential through CSUMB. She is a second-grade teacher at her alumni school, San Carlos in Monterey. Stephanie taught at Elkhorn Elementary in Castroville for 13 years prior, a total of 18 years of teaching. I asked Stephanie what she likes most about being a teacher. “I love the excitement and love for learning you can create in children. I enjoy students take risks and the process of understanding”. Her teaching philosophy is project based and states that it is thrilling to witness and facilitate students learning in different ways and sharing their thinking with their peers. “I very much enjoy teaching the whole child whereas my goals in teaching are always to produce good people, not just good students.” Time management is Stephanie’s biggest challenge. “It is very easy to get so enthralled in teaching that it becomes your sole focus. Balancing life (being a wife, motherhood, housework, self-care) while feeling a commitment to your students and school community is a struggle. Learning never stops and feeling the sense of constant recreating lessons to serve your population better each year can be overwhelming.” When asked about some of her most significant achievements or recognitions, Stephanie discussed how the classroom is an extension of each student’s family. Building a trusting and compassionate environment are some of her most significant achievements. She states, “I cherish when former students come back or write and remind me of everything I did for them or how much I impacted their lives. It always gives me such fulfillment to hear and know I’ve done my

job and done it well.” She has also served as an Induction Coach for new teachers and has helped them learn and become confident in their teaching styles. Stephanie was honored this past school year with the KION Classroom Make Over award. So what advice does this seasoned teacher have for people exploring the option of a teaching career? “Organization and patience are key elements to a successful classroom. Be passionate: if you love your job, then the students will feel that and love their job too! Enjoy the journey: the job is always changing. New students = new challenges and missions to accomplish.” Stephanie also stresses not to be afraid to ask for help from parents, principals or fellow teachers; they are willing to give support to ensure a successful year. Joanna Medina Joanna Medina is initially from Monterey. She was born and raised by parents who are firstgeneration Americans of Italian immigrants. Joanna’s mother, Anna Panetta, who was a teacher for over 40 years, came into her classroom to assist her every day before passing away in 2016. Her father, Joseph, is an attorney and continues to practice law at the age of 84. Joanna is married and has two children and five grandchildren. Joanna and her husband came back to Monterey after he completed active duty in the Army. He is originally from Texas and fell in love with the Monterey Peninsula. “We both wanted to be near parents so that our children

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • august 2018

could have the joy of knowing their grandparents.” Joanna attended Monterey Peninsula College and then transferred to San Jose State where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies and then went on to complete her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She has continued her education earning additional college credits to keep current on teaching practices and curriculum. Her current teaching assignment is at Monte Vista Elementary School in Monterey. Coincidentally, Joanna attended this school (so did I!), her children were students there, AND her mother taught there for over 20 years. She teaches 5th grade and has been teaching for 25 years. Joanna’s favorite aspect of teaching is helping her students learn and take ownership of their learning. She explains how seeing the look on a student’s face when understanding happens is such a reward. She not only enjoys the relationship with her students but with her colleagues. “Teaching is not just about learning the curriculum, but it is giving them life skills to help them navigate in the years beyond being in my class. I want them to leave with confidence in who they are and what they can do.” Joanna’s biggest challenge in teaching has been the pace at which students are expected to learn. She explains, “High expectations are good for students, but when we are asking them to be pushed beyond what they are ready for, it creates frustration, and they are not able to learn.” Joanna states that technology is extremely beneficial, but it also can be a

montereybayparent.com

11

barrier to learning if students cannot think on their own. “The other piece that comes into play is that so many of our students come to us broken and as teachers, we are expected to be all things to all students. Teachers do their very best to ensure that all students have what they need to be successful, but it is difficult when students are in need of so many things.” Joanna recently received the Monterey County Teacher of the Year award. She also won the Who Award, which is given to teachers by the teacher’s union and the CTA, recognizing teachers who have helped uphold other educators. Despite this recognition, Joanna believes that her most significant achievement in her teaching career is her students. “At the end of every year, as they walk out of my classroom for the last time, I am so honored and proud to have been their teacher and so excited to know that they have the skills and knowledge to carry them through not only sixth grade but throughout the years they have ahead. Knowing that I have instilled in them a greater sense of confidence and acceptance

of who they are and what they can be if they work hard and do their best is my greatest achievement.” JooLee Satchell JooLee Satchell and I first met while attending classes at California State University Monterey Bay. JooLee, a native of Marina is now married with two children. I asked her why she remained here on the Peninsula, “My husband and I both decided that we want to stay in the Monterey County for the foreseeable future because we love the weather, we love our careers, and we feel that it’s a great place for our children to grow up.” JooLee received her Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies in 2002 and her multiple subject teaching credential with a supplemental authorization in mathematics, in 2003. Her

current position is with the Salinas Union High School District at Washington Middle School. Last school year she taught Common Core 7 Math, completing her 15th year of full-time teaching. I questioned JooLee about what she enjoys the most about teaching. “The best thing is passing on knowledge to others and shaping the minds of our future.” JooLee’s biggest challenge is differentiating her instruction to meet the needs of all students. “The range in my classes can be quite large to where I have mainstream and GATE students, but also have English Learners and special education students. Meeting their needs can be quite difficult.” JooLee has taken on additional duties throughout the years such as collaborative facilitator, co-department chair, and other various committees. She has completed many different professional developments

and participated in and hosted learning walks for which she has been recognized for at district board meetings. One of her most rewarding achievements is that some of her former students have chosen to become teachers and even join her by teaching in the same district! I asked what advice JooLee could give to people interested in a career in education. “One piece of advice that I would give is to have patience. At times, it can become very stressful and overwhelming, but with patience, it can be resolved and is a rewarding career”. Ruben Yanez Ruben Yanez was born in Central California but raised in a small town in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. He was two years old when his parents decided to move back to Mexico where he stayed until the age of fifteen. Ruben’s wife is from Monterey County, and they have two small children and are expecting their third child in November. He attended California State University Monterey Bay from 1999-2001, along with JooLee and myself, and earned his B.A. in Liberal Studies as well as a Multiple Subject Credential with an emphasis in Spanish (BCLAD) along with an English Language Arts Certification. Ruben holds a Masters in Educational Leadership from San Jose State University. Ruben is a teacher at Washington Middle School in Salinas. His current assignment is 7th-8th grade Language Arts teacher and AVID Coordinator. This fall will mark the beginning of his sixteenth year in education. When asked what he enjoys most about teaching, “I work mostly with struggling learners that are two or more grades below grade level, and even though it is extremely challenging, I feel honored to be able to work with them and help them acquire the necessary skills to be successful in high school and beyond.” Another reason Ruben enjoys teaching is he feels very strongly that by educating and empowering his students, he has a positive impact on their families’ lives and the communities in which they live. One of the most significant challenges Ruben faces each day is having to find novel ways to inspire those students who seem to have given up on their ability to be successful in school. It is worth the struggle, in the end, to see his students succeed. “Having current and former students and their families come to visit and acknowledge that I have made an impact on their lives is priceless!” Ruben shared some advice for those debating on whether or not to enter the teaching pathway. “Find your passion because once you do, you will enjoy everything that comes with the profession. Be proud of the fact that you are responsible for shaping the lives of your students and their families as well. Acknowledge that teaching is going to be difficult and exhausting at times, but make sure you seek out support when needed and always make time to take care of yourself mentally and physically.” Nicole Amaral is a Monterey native and graduate of California State University of Monterey Bay. Nicole is the Calendar Editor for Monterey Bay Parent. She is the mother of a 5-year old son. MONTEREY BAY PARENT • august 2018

Adults Go Back T

School, Too!

Back-to-school season can be a bit hectic for any family – and those challenges are compounded for parents who are heading back to school, themselves. Three local moms shared their experiences and the tips and support that got them through.

Kesha is a military spouse and mother of three teens. She recently earned her BA in Collaborative Health and Human Sciences and her Masters in Social Work from CSUMB.

MBP: Can you give us some background on your journey towards higher education? As a teen mother of twins, I refused to believe that my life in regards to higher education was over. I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to go to school right away because I was–at one point –a mother of three under three, and also the wife of a sailor who was embarking on his journey in the military. But I would find a way. Early on–when I was still at home with my kids, I noticed that one of my twins wasn’t meeting his milestones. After receiving support from a social worker, I knew this is what I was called to do. Ultimately, I would like to teach college and have a private therapy practice. MBP: What kinds of challenges did you face? The most challenging thing about attending school and raising children has been missing out on those special moments -- sporting events, award ceremonies, etc. But the chance to model for my kids what it takes to get what you want has been rewarding. My children have seen me - and my husband, mind you, who also completed his Masters in December from NPS - put in some long hours at home, work, school, and internships, all the while showing up for our kids. Sometimes so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open, but I made it. MBP: What would you tell parents who are considering this path? There will never be a “good time” to go back to school. Your children will ALWAYS need you. When my children were younger, I could only take one class at a time, which is why it took me almost 13 years to go from my AA to my Masters. The support of my family - especially my husband - made this journey a lot easier. He and the kids just filled in the gaps, and we never missed a beat. MBP: Looking back, would you change anything? Nope, nope, and nope. I think the struggles and the obstacles helped to reveal my strengths, my drives and the supports have in my life. In the words of Maya Angelou, “Wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now.”

14

Monica completed an accelerated Quickbooks Accounting course while raising her 2-year-old son in Monterey County. MBP: What kinds of challenges came up as you were juggling classes, work and raising Orion? So, in the time I was at school, I was also working as a tax preparer -- during tax season. The hardest part was not having enough childcare–it is tough to work with a 2-year-old tugging at your arm. MBP: What about that season was the most rewarding? During that time, nothing was rewarding. If I got five hours of sleep, that was awesome. Orion was born prematurely, which carried its challenges. Right before classes started, we both got sick. Orion spent his second birthday in the ER, and I had to miss a week and a half of work. But knowing classes and tax season would eventually come to an end kept me going. I would look at the calendar and think, okay, just a few more weeks. And for us, creating a structured routine made a huge difference. Seeing where he is now, I feel so good knowing all of that hard work has paid off. Now I’m free to work in peace, knowing my son is okay.

our economy, but I grew up in a military family and married into the military. I didn’t have an understanding of unions and the struggles of non-military workers. So I decided to work towards a major in Labor Studies.

Maria is a mother and military spouse pursuing her BS in Labor Studies at Indiana University. She is the former Development Director at the Veterans Transition Center and recently started her a grant writing and nonprofit fundraising consulting company, Vaulknut Solutions. MBP: Why this degree? Why now? I wanted to pursue a career in politics, but how could I without a better understanding of unions and blue-collar workers? They’re the backbone of

MBP: What has been the most challenging thing about attending school while raising your son? Balance. It’s hard to find a balance between giving my son the time and attention he deserves, working, and going to school. And in the two years, we’ve been here in Monterey my husband has been a student at DLI, which is demanding. But I have been shocked at the sense of accomplishment I feel at the end of a semester. I went to college before I got married, long before I had my son, and it was completely different. This time around I’m much more driven and motivated. My advice for other parents? Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Going to school is hard. Going to school when you have a million other responsibilities is even harder. If you can take a full class load, go for it, but know there is NO SHAME in taking a lighter class load. You will

finish it, just don’t burn yourself out. Do you have midterms coming up? That could be the perfect time for your children to have a playdate or sleepover… somewhere else. Having a strong support group of family that wants you to be successful and other parents in similar situations will save you so much stress. I wish there were more people who understood the struggle of pursuing higher education with kids. I found that many childcare centers prioritize working parents over parents enrolled in school. Having a safe place for your children to go, so that you can focus on homework, is important. I think parents seeking education should be appreciated, because creating a brighter personal future is creating a brighter future for our children. Thank you, Kesha, Monica, and Maria, for sharing your stories, and for your words of encouragement for parents committed to continuing their education. Katie Raquel is a small business owner and mother of three living in Monterey County.

Summer Thrills The Best Roller Coasters in Northern California

W

hat better way to celebrate summer than with a trip to an amusement park and a ride– or two–on a roller coaster? We have three great options within a few hours of Monterey including Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, California Great America in Santa Clara, and Six Flags Discovery in Vallejo. Indulge the thrill seekers in your family with a ride on one of our favorite Northern California coasters!

1.

Giant Dipper. For families in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, the Giant Dipper is the first coaster ride for most of our kids (mine included!). Sixty million people have ridden the Big Dipper since it 16

opened in 1924. Other than being the oldest roller coaster in California, the ride is also one of the oldest roller coasters in the world. It’s been featured in several movies filmed in Santa Cruz including “The Lost Boys.” The Big Dipper reaches a height of 50 feet with speeds of up to 55 mph. It is constructed of wood and has remained virtually unchanged since its opening. On February 27, 1987, the United States National Park Service recognized the Giant Dipper as a National Historic Landmark. Riders must be 50” to ride. You can either purchase individual ride tickets for $7.00 each or a ride band that includes all rides.

2.

Gold Striker. Gold Striker is a wooden roller coaster located at California’s Great America amusement park. The ride theme references the 19th Century California Gold Rush. Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards have named it one of the world’s Top 10 wooden coasters every year since its launch. Its 174-foot-long tunnel featured on its first drop is the longest in the world, and it was marketed as the tallest and fastest wooden coaster in Northern California. The ride reaches a top speed of approx-

imately 54 miles per hour and has a height of 108 feet. If you’re at the park after dark, don’t miss a ride on Gold Striker. The initial descent tunnel is the longest on any wooden coaster and keeps riders in the dark on night rides. Daily passes and season tickets are all available. Check the website for special deals. 4701 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, 95054 www.cagreatamerica.com

3.

Medus. In Greek mythology, Medusa was half woman and half serpent. Even the bravest warriors were no match for her. At 3,937 feet, Medusa is the longest and highest coaster in Northern California and definitely gives you the opportunity to face your coaster fears. Medusa opened in 2000 as the first floorless roller coaster on the west coast. The coaster features a 150-foot-tall lift hill with a 150-foot drop. Medus has one of the largest vertical loops in the world at 128 ft.

The top speed is a hair-raising 65 mph. Riders must be 54” to ride. Daily passes, season tickets, and memberships are all available. Check the website for special deals. 1001 Fairgrounds Dr, Vallejo, 94589 www.sixflags.com/discovery kingdom

4.

Rail Blazer. The Rail Blazer at California Great America is the newest coaster on the list making its debut in June. The coaster is the first of its kind on the West Coast, featuring a single rail track. With an eight-passenger single file train hugging the rail, riders speed over the twisting track at a top speed of 52 miles per hour. The ride mimics an off-road adventure that embraces the great outdoors of the Bay Area and Central Coast. Once on board, riders climb 45-degrees, dive into a ravine and encounter steep embankments representing an extreme fourwheeling journey.

Riders must be 54” to ride. A daily ticket or season pass is required to ride the Rail Blazer, no individual tickets are available. 4701 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, 95054 www.cagreatamerica.com

5.

Superman: Ultimate Flight. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s newest coaster, Superman: Ultimate Flight opened in 2012 after months of teasing the public. The coaster accelerates to a top speed of 62 miles per hour and travels up to a height of 150 feet. You reach that top speed just seconds after launching out of the station. Superman reaches a height of 150 feet where it completes a heartline roll (ranking it among the tallest inversions in the world). Riders must be 54” to ride. Daily passes, season tickets, and memberships are all available. Check the website for specials. 1001 Fairgrounds Dr, Vallejo, 94589 www.sixflags.com/discovery kingdom
