We’re All About July Fun If you have kids, you deal with the birthday dilemma at some point. It can be difficult: small or large, entire class or just a few friends, gifts or donations; it goes on and on. We have some help with two articles in this issue. Katie Raquel asked children and their parents what they want for their birthday. The answer is simple; they want to be recognized in a way that is meaningful to them. As parents, we can get carried away with planning celebrations for us instead of focusing on what our child most enjoys. Katie’s article is a good reminder to put the focus back on the child. Nicole Amaral tackles the issues of etiquette in her article on page 12. She has tips for both the party host and the attendees. The most critical advice in my book: RSVP! Seriously, it takes just a minute to call, email, or text but it saves the host family aggravation and in many cases, money. Be sure to check out our birthday giveaway on page 11. Playhouses for Military Kids

ne of my favorite things about Monterey is the temperate climate. It means plenty of outdoor playtime for my family, something that can’t be said of all duty stations that we’ve been fortunate enough to have called home. Some days we take a jog along the recreation trail. Others, we go for a family hike through Point Lobos or Big Sur. We’ve even ventured up to Santa Cruz to see the redwoods at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. But nothing compares to a relaxing day in our backyard. If you have driven through either of the two main military housing neighborhoods, La Mesa or Fort Ord, you have probably seen the cute, wooden playhouses in front, side, or backyards. Complete with replica solar panels, the playhouses are themed for the interests of the child who calls it “home.” Whether your child is an animal lover, aspiring astronaut, or sports enthusiast, they can get a playhouse all of their own. Habitat for Humanity East Bay/ Silicon Valley and South Bay Blue Star Moms generously build and donate these playhouses to military families as part of The Playhouse Project. Since the project started in 2009, they have provided over 1,800 playhouses for military families. For free. You pay zero dollars and drive home with a playhouse.

How amazingly generous is that? If you are a military mom or dad in Monterey, this is a MUST DO for your kids. Keep in mind that you are responsible for getting the playhouse from the San Francisco/San Jose area back to your home here in Monterey. A 4’ x 6’ space in your vehicle is recommended. Not sure if you have enough room? Just borrow a truck or rent one from a hardware store or rental agency for the day. Better yet, see if other families are also picking up playhouses and share in the rental costs. Pick up is available mid-day on weekdays in one of the bay area cities. Once you get your playhouse home, the only limits on how you use it is your imagination! Create a cozy place with mats, carpeting, even blankets. The playhouses are constructed with sturdy materials, including real shingles so that they can stand up to the elements outside. You can set up kidsized chairs and a table for a fun, little house all their

own. The playhouses are popular with children all the way from infants to age 9. They can be disassembled and reassembled with only 12 screws and are easy to take along when you relocate. What Do Kids Really Want for Their Birthday?

ids want what we all want for our birthdays–to be seen and celebrated in a way that recognizes who we are and what we love. For some kids–like mine –that’s a quiet backyard party with family and a best friend. For others, it’s a wild afternoon at Chuck E Cheese with their entire class (and Godspeed to the parents of that child; may your coffee be strong and your child’s bedtime be early). I spoke with parents and interviewed children at the Porter Youth Center, who answered the question, “What do kids really want for their birthday?” The verdict: kids want to do what they love with the people they care about. These five questions can help reveal the perfect party for yours. Five questions to ask before the next birthday party:

Does your kid like to be involved in plans? If so, put them to work! Not everyone loves surprises; for many, prepping and hosting is half the fun. “My four year old loves helping me decorate our house for her birthday and then inviting her friends over for a party. We keep it simple: lots

of balloons, a banner, tablecloth and paper plates, maybe some hanging decorations, and goodie bags. She loves being a host and having us all here to welcome her friends.” – Deborah Araujo “My daughters love baking and decorating the cakes as a family. Would your child appreciate the chance to give back on their birthday? When I spoke with parents and kids, several mentioned the desire to spend their day helping others.

Does your child get a kick out of novel experiences? Not everyone likes to spend birthdays way outside of their comfort zone, but some kids will leap at the chance to try something new.

DO’S & DON’TS

t’s time to start planning your child’s birthday party! You have the location, date, and theme all set. Now all that’s left to figure out is the etiquette: the do’s and don’ts surrounding throwing a child’s celebration. Here are two guides to help both the parents throwing the birthday bash and the ones attending.

Tips for Birthday Party hosts 1. INVITATIONS Don’t distribute invitations at school. It is not necessary to invite everyone in your child’s class to the party. It is usually a bad idea to have too many guests, especially with younger children. I know for myself, I must limit the amount we invite to keep to a budget. To be considerate of others’ feelings, invitations should be mailed, emailed or handed out elsewhere. Talk to your child about not discussing the party at school since not everyone may be invited. Long-time birthday party hostess and attendee, Angela Wecker, suggests that if not everyone in the class can be invited to the party, parents could host a more informal playdate, inviting the whole class to a nearby park after school and provide cookies or cupcakes. 2. RSVP’S Getting RSVP’s can be rough. It’s okay to call, text or email parents if they don’t reply to your invitation by the deadline you give. Use the contact as an opportunity to clarify the time and date of the party (and to gather information about things like food allergies, especially if the parents are dropping off their children). Be prepared for extra surprise guests. We have all been to a party when someone unexpected pops up. Siblings may come even if the invitation states only one or two of the children are invited. Be ready with extra cupcakes or a few extra goody bags, just in case! 3. GOODY BAGS Speaking of goody bags, many parents are opting out of the traditional character covered plastic bags full of cheap trinkets. Consider sending kids home with a small, affordable gift such as a coloring book and crayons or a re-usable water bottle to replace the usual assortment of stuff. 4. GIFTS Wait to open gifts? Should your child open presents then and there or after guests leave? I think it depends on your child, their age, and the party environment. Diane Gottsman; an etiquette expert, says to give your child present-opening tips. Before the party, educate by NicoleifAmaral them about gift-opening etiquette, especially you will

be opening gifts at the party. Before everyone arrives, remind them that a smile and a “thank you” are good ways to acknowledge a gift, not “I don’t like Sponge Bob” or “I have this one.” I have seen young kids under six, rip open the gifts and mix up the cards, with no way to know who gave them what. If you like to keep track of who gave which gift for thank you card purposes, waiting until later may be the best way to go. To make gift-giving easier and smoother for younger children, consider making the activity into a game. Expert party organizer, Jamie Leigh suggests starting a tradition. The birthday child opens each gift and the giver gets to select something from a basket of favors. 5. THANK YOU NOTES Thank you notes are mandatory! I can’t tell you how many times I have given a gift and not received a thank you card. Parents and children should write or print out cards to send out a few days after the party. Mom or dad can write the note on their behalf if they are young, but it is best to get the child involved as early as possible. Let them write the notes if they can, “dictate” to mom or dad, or at least sign their name, depending on their ability. Even a bunch of chicken scratch or a picture drawn on a piece of paper is better received than nothing. Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert writes, “Teaching your child to write thank-you notes

is a gift that will last much longer than any of the brightly wrapped presents that he opens on the big day.” You’ll be teaching consideration, gratitude, and writing skills.

Tips for Birthday Party guests 1. RSVP The host needs to know how many guests to plan on so that each child gets a goody bag and there’s enough of everything to go around. RSVP’s are a must, especially when the party is at a place like MY Museum or the Bowling Alley, which involve advance head counts. RSVP, however the invitation says. I usually write; “call, text or email” to cover all the bases. Try not to accept or decline while standing outside the school or classroom. Not only is it more difficult for the host to keep track that way but not all the children in the class may have received an invitation. It is best if you don’t bring up the party unless you know their children were also included. 2. GIFTS Try to find out what the birthday kid likes. It will simplify gift buying and will also serve as a good lesson for your child. I know my son loves paying attention to what their friends enjoy playing with, watching on TV, or what books they choose from the library. Don’t feel the need to spend a ton on a gift. My five-year-old son received a $100 Batman toy

from his aunt for his birthday. He liked it, however, he was no more impressed with that than he was with a $8-dollar Batman book he received from a friend. The key to both gifts’ success was that the givers knew he loved Batman. The money spent made no difference. 3. DIETARY RESTRICTIONS Do let the host know about any dietary restrictions. Whether a child has food allergies, a kosher diet, a vegan lifestyle, etc., many hosts will try to have at least one food item available that the child can eat. It also opens the door for communication. A couple of my son’s longtime friends are allergic to peanuts. When we all get together, I make sure that peanut butter is not on the menu. 4. COURTESY Don’t bring extra siblings. Angela remarks, “Unless otherwise stated, the birthday party is not for everyone.” It is not fair to the host to bring your other children when only one has been invited. If in doubt about who is invited, ask or decline the invitation due to a lack of childcare. Once the child is old enough to be dropped off, it will be easier to have them attend without a sibling tagging along. an Jose, located 70 miles North of Monterey is the largest City in Northern California. When I was in my twenties and early thirties, I would drive up to San Jose with friends and visit Santana Row, downtown nightclubs, concert halls and other “adult” hot spots. Now that I have a family, it’s time to do some research on the kid-friendly venues offered in this popular city. Here are five to add to your “must visit” list. Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose 180 Woz Way www.cdm.org This Children’s Museum had been on my list of places to visit for a few years, but I wanted to make sure my son would be able to enjoy all they had to offer. Since he is entering Kindergarten in the Fall, I knew it was time to visit. The Museum is open on Mondays until Labor Day from 10-5pm, TuesdaySaturday 10-5pm, and Sundays 12-5pm. (Member-only 11-12pm). General admission for ages 1-59 is $15, 60+ is $14 and infants under one year old are free. Be prepared to spend hours in this interactive, hands-on museum filled with activities for every type of child. My son was instantly drawn to the water, gardening and fossils exhibits. Some activities engage children in art, technology, archeology, architecture, farming and so much more. Make sure to check out the newest exhibit, based on Disney Junior’s award-winning series, Doc McStuffins. This exhibit, full of active participation will be at the museum until September 17th. At lunchtime, we decided to try their Food Shed and was pleasantly surprised. The Food Shed offers healthy Kid’s Bento Boxes MONTEREY BAY PARENT • July 2018

filled with your choice of items like chicken tenders, pasta, or grilled cheese, and one fruit or vegetable on the side. I ordered a Chicken Tikka Tart, a delicious Indian dish and loved it. Our final stop after hours of playing was The Shop. My son enjoyed browsing the many interactive games, art activities, maker kits and science experiments. We received a free Children’s Museum tote bag. It was a fun-filled day and we will definitely return. The Tech Museum of Innovation 201 S. Market Street www.thetech.org The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose has always been one of my favorite indoor spots to explore. They offer many hands-on activities that help us explore how technological advances are changing our way of living. Wannabe engineers of all ages can design, construct, and program a real robot using sensors, controllers, and actuators. Another favorite for the younger crowd is the Tech Studio. In this hands-on exhibit, people can explore their problem-solving potential with guided experiences in STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. We enjoyed designing a windmill and learning about physics by building a better ice skate. Feeling adventurous? My husband took a flight in a bird simulator. Equipped with a VR headset, you will experience the closest thing to bird flight possible with modern technology. It was definitely worth the $8 for a 2-minute ride ($5 for members). Emma Prusch Farm Park 647 King Road https://www.sanjose.gov/Facilities/ Details/131 I had no idea that Emma Prusch Farm Park in East San Jose even existed until one of my son’s teachers recommended a trip. Native San Josean Emma Prusch bequeathed

87 acres to the City of San Jose in 1962 with the intention of it being a place of relaxation, recreation, and enjoyment for the people of the City of San Jose . The fertile agricultural land was once a working dairy farm located in the heart of the Valley of Hearts Delight at the intersection of King and Story Roads. The park consists of the remaining 47 acres from the original gift. The Emma Prusch Farm Park is open daily from 8 am to 30 minutes before sunset. The original Prusch family farmhouse, along with other historic structures are located within the park, which has one of the most substantial free-standing wooden barns in California. The barn is home to large 4H animals including beef cattle, sheep, and swine. There are also many agricultural displays and educational events held at the farm. Emma Prusch Farm Park includes heritage, high density, and rare fruit orchards, a Plant Science Center, two community gardens, pollinator, and butterfly gardens, as well as acres of lush green lawns for picnics and playing. The Park also has a Friendship Forest planted with trees from all around the world. The Santa Clara Home Composting Program maintains a demonstration site here as well. The small farm animal enclosure is home to many typical farm animals including chickens, pigs, and rabbits. Chickens, guineas, ducks, geese, and peafowl can be found roaming the park. The barn is a central attraction

at the park and my son loved it. Local 4H youth use the barn to raise their market and breeding animals. The barn serves as a residence to steers, goats, sheep, and pigs. The barn is open to the public during certain park hours. Every first Sunday of October is the Prusch Farm Park Mountain Music Festival. This year’s event will include all-day live entertainment, hay wagon rides, farm animal displays by 4H, tours of the Park, historical farmhouse, barn, orchards and “Emma’s Heirloom German Kitchen Garden.” Winchester Mystery House 525 S. I am waiting to bring my five-yearold until he is older, but I have visited several times in the past. Sarah Winchester was a real woman of independence, drive, and courage who lives on in legend as a grieving widow. Today you can tour 110 of the 160 rooms of the Winchester Mystery House mansion and see the bizarre architecture such as windows

built into the floors, stairs leading to ceilings, doors that open onto blank walls, and an obsession with the number “13” and spider web motifs. Some of the highlights of the 65-minute Mansion tour include the “25,000 Room”, hayloft, Sarah’s bedroom, Séance room, Grand Ballroom, Venetian dining room, “Hall of Fires” and much more. The Mansion Tour includes admission to the Victorian Gardens, Historic Firearms Museum, and Specialty Gifts and Antique Products Museum. The price ranges from $20.00 to $39.00. For a limited time you can add on the Explore More Tour–a new experience that takes guests to never-before open to the public areas in the mansion. Guests will gradually make their way deeper and deeper into the mansion’s unsettling corridors and dark hideaways. Children 10 and under are not permitted to go on the Explore More Tour. Tour Duration: 2 hours and 15 minutes (combined with the Mansion Tour). Prices range from $20.00 to $49.00. The most popular time for people to venture to the mansion (besides the summer months) is in October. As autumn leaves start to fall, the Halloween Candlelight Tour begins. The Winchester Mystery House’s Gothic vibe will chill you to the bone while you are guided through the 160-room Victorian mansion. Check the website for more details. Besides enjoying the Mansion Tour, I have had the opportunity to attend the Friday the 13th Flashlight Tour. On this spooky tour for adults only, visitors will be guided through the darkness with nothing but a flashlight. The final date is Friday, July 13th so check now to see if tickets are still available. in luck. The perfect place to meet and greet animals and enjoy ageappropriate rides is only an hour away in south San Jose. Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals such as the Black & White Ruffed Lemur, Capybara, Giant Anteater, Jaguar, Monkeys, Tortoises, many different species of birds and much more. General admission to Happy Hollow (ages 2-59) is $14.25, $11.25 for ages 60+ and babies under two are free. The park is open daily from 10-5pm, except for major holidays. Parking is $10 per vehicle. My son was so excited to visit Happy Hollow, so we planned a visit before the weather became too warm. The first activity on our agenda was an animal meet and greet. We visited many different mammals, reptiles, birds and even saw some honey bees. We caught part of a cute puppet show featuring an imaginative little fox. I was so delighted to learn that the American Alligator Exhibit had just opened. The public can view the alligator training sessions during the week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 2:30 pm. After enjoying a tasty picnic lunch in the Picnic Basket Restaurant, it was time to try the rides. My son enjoyed the Carousel, Frog Hopper, and Mini Putt Putt Ride to name a few. My favorite was the somewhat more thrilling Pacific Fruit Express Family Roller Coaster. We all enjoyed looking at The Crooked House and exploring The Animal Barn. We spent the last part of our adventure playing at the Redwood Lookout. It’s nestled in the Redwoods complete with ropes, swings, slides, and climbing areas. Happy Hollow organizes many events and classes throughout the year. On Saturday, July 14 there is a Beekeeping & Beyond Workshop planned for 9 am, occasional guest storytelling from Kristi Yamaguchi and ½ price admission days each month throughout the year. Located less than 2 hours from Monterey, Paso Robles offers warmer temps, sun, and fun for the whole family. The Ravine Waterpark. Your kids will love the opportunity to wear their swimsuits and splash around at this fantastic water park. Located right off Highway 46, it is easily accessed from downtown Paso Robles and many hotels. The park has a lazy river, wave pool, several slides and a tadpole, perfect for little ones. Daily admission tickets are less than $30 per person and children under 2 are free. The park is open from May-September. Visit their website, www.ravinewaterpark.com for a daily schedule, discounts and to purchase tickets. Family Friendly Wineries. Yes, you read that correctly. Paso Robles has several family-friendly wineries. Sculpterra Winery offers a beautiful backdrop for your tasting experience, with amazing gardens and beautiful sculptures. They also have a game area that your kids can enjoy free of charge including chess, foosball, table tennis and bocce ball. Pistachios are also grown on site. Tooth and Nail Winery is another great option. Your kids will feel like prince and princesses at this winery, as the main building for tastings is a castle, complete with a moat around the outside. Tooth and Nail has a great outdoor patio with corn hole boards. They even have french fries on their menu. Eberle Winery is located on 38 acres and in addition to a compli-

mentary wine tasting, you can also tour their caves as well. They have bocce ball and corn hole, too. At Castoro Cellars, your kids will have the opportunity to have their own complimentary grape juice tasting. They also provide coloring books and have a large grassy area for the kids to play in. Paso Robles Children’s Museum at the Volunteer Firehouse. Don’t come to Paso Robles without a stop at this museum, which is a non-profit organization that encourages learning through play and honors the heritage of the volunteer firefighters. There are several interactive exhibits, with kid favorites being El Mercado, where kids can shop and check out in the grocery store while learning Spanish and the Grape Stomp with its fun ball pit. There are two local brew houses to visit in Paso Robles. The first is Firestone Walker Brewing Company, famous for their “805” beer.
