from the publisher…
We’re celebrating! We’re celebrating this month! It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we introduced Monterey Bay Parent to the community. I couldn’t be happier about the progress of the magazine and how warmly the community has welcomed us. With each issue, we’ve grown and improved, and I know that will continue. I’d like to send out a special thank you to the special people who have made this year possible: Nicole Amaral, Katie Begley, Allison Chance, and Donna Jean Shoemaker–thank you from the bottom of my heart. To the readers who have provided such great feedback and support: THANK YOU! Finally, without our advertisers, we wouldn’t be able to provide Monterey Bay Parent as a free resource to the community. I am grateful for each of you and appreciate the trust you have placed in us by making us a part of your team. We haven’t forgotten about Father’s Day! Allison Chance has some great suggestions for gifts for your favorite dad on page 20 Plus, we have eight BBQ restaurants to choose from for the perfect Father’s Day lunch or dinner (page 16). Nicole Amaral is back with our Fun Family Five. This month she’s rounded up five great outdoor suggestions in Big Sur. Check out her article on pages 14-15, and you’ll be all set for the next sunny afternoon excursion. In other big news, our Cover Kids Contest is open. This year we’ve teamed up with Del Monte Center. More details will be coming but for now, head to our website for more information on how to enter. The contest is how we choose our cover models for the entire year, so if you’d like to see your children on the cover of Monterey Bay Parent, this is your chance! One final note, The Monterey Rock and Rod Festival will be held on Saturday, June 23 at Custom House Plaza with the Sock Hop on Friday, June 22. The events raise money for the Gateway Center of Monterey County. The Rock and Rod Festival holds special meaning for our Calendar Editor, Nicole Amaral, and I hope you’ll support The Gateway House and attend one or both!

Military mom
Does your child need specialized medical support? F or military families new to Monterey, a specialized care provider can help identify services available in the community. But the path to finding the right provider can be daunting. There are excellent resources offered by the military and the Monterey community to help parents navigate specialized care. Think your child may need extra support? The best place to start is your pediatrician’s office. They have experience navigating the referral process and getting the necessary paperwork started. Pediatricians often screen for common concerns at routine visits but don’t hesitate to ask questions if you think that something needs extra attention. Once a referral is approved, a specialist can help guide care based on your child’s needs. Evaluation is helpful to both determine where each child needs support as well as where they excel. A care plan can include opportunities in the natural environment to build skills as well as more intense interventions. The Fleet and Family Support Center and Army Community Services are both excellent resources for connecting military families with specialized providers in our community. Experts at the Exceptional Family Member Program can also provide insight. Some providers even come to playgroups to meet and educate families. Speech therapy is one of the first specialized care opportunities available, often around 18 months or 2 years. But it can be beneficial even earlier. Alongside lactation consultants, speech therapists can provide insight during feeding. “The cues your child is providing during feeding are the first form of communication and the beginning of 8

language development,” says Jenn D’Attilio at Central Coast Language and Learning. Occupational therapy and physical therapy are other services that can help with mobility and developmental needs. Natalie Sanders, Director of Therasens Occupational Therapy, works with many military families as part of their care team. “Early intervention is key,” she says, recommending that parents take advantage of the numerous resources available in the Monterey area. Keep in mind that there may be resources available here that weren’t at your last duty station. This is where working with a specialist can help identify what services are right for you. Following through on a specialized care plan can be difficult during military moves. Telemedicine allows providers and patients to stay connected using video call technology. Jenn and her team use
telemedicine to ensure continuity of care for patients and to allow military spouses on their team to continue providing care. As you plan for a move, ask your provider if telemedicine is an option. TRICARE, the military insurance network, also offers case management services free of charge for those needing continuous, highneeds care. Natalie recommends working with a case manager if your child needs more intense interventions to make sure that you are set up at your new duty station. Contact TRICARE West at 1-844866-WEST to see if working with a case manager may be right for your situation. Katie Begley is a Navy veteran and military spouse. re you curious about raising backyard chickens? They’re affectionate, affordable, lowmaintenance, educational and fun. Plus–fresh eggs! Our kids love playing around with our hens, and we love that our family is developing a deeper understanding of what it takes to eat and live sustainably. Like any pet, you can take a pared-down, modest approach, or pull out all of the stops–sparing no expense. While a top-of-theline redwood coop with built-in heat lamps and a garden perimeter chicken run would be a blast, all your birds need is a safe space, some food, and a little TLC. But wait, is it even legal to raise chickens in your city? Let’s break it down: • Marina: up to 4 hens • Seaside: up to 4 hens • Monterey: up to 4 hens or roosters • Pacific Grove: up to 4 hens
• • •
with a permit Carmel-by-the-Sea: not legal Carmel Valley: no restrictions on hens, but permits required for more than five roosters Salinas: not legal
The Basics If you’re adopting an adult chicken, skip down to the bottom of this chick-list. Chicks will need • A warming light to keep their space around 90 degrees • Chick feed • Large box • Soft flooring (pine shavings work well) Your grown chicken will need • A coop. 3-4 square feet per bird inside the coop and 10 feet per bird, outside. • A covered egg-laying box within the coop - with an outside door to give you easy access to
eggs. • A perch within the coop. We use a few large branches spanning the coop about two feet off the ground. 2x4 wood also works well. • More pine shavings for their egg laying box, and flooring for their coop. Sand is a popular option. • Chicken feed and water, with dispensers for both. The better your feeding and watering system, the more low-maintenance your set-up will be. Your chickens will love • Veggie scraps • Juicy bugs - chickens will help rid your garden of pests! • Dust baths. Your kids, especially, will get a kick out of watching this grooming habit, which helps your hens stay free of parasites. • Space to roam. If you can, allow your birds to wander the yard

as much as possible during the day. • Petting and gentle handling. If you pay attention, you’ll discover your birds have unique personalities. They’re often friendly and affectionate, especially with their trusted caregivers. Troubleshooting: • Hens live for eight to ten years but only lay for about five. Many people choose to part with their hens when they stop producing, but you can also let your ladies enjoy a much-deserved retirement as family pets. • Be cautious about introducing new chicks to an existing flock. Chicks should be at least 2-3 months old before joining the hen house. • Chickens will typically not lay in the winter without an assist from heat lamps. • Feather loss (molting). Starting around 18 months, your hens will shed and regrow most of their feathers every fall. Perfectly normal and healthy! • Your flock may attract the attention of neighborhood predators such as cats, raccoons, and coyotes. Be sure there aren’t any tiny gaps in your coop, and that the material you use (wood and wire mesh, in our case), extends at least a foot into the ground around the perimeter. MONTEREY BAY PARENT • june 2018
An interview with Seaside resident and chicken enthusiast Nic Coury What’s your favorite thing about raising hens? I got into it, initially, for the fresh eggs, and then once I had the chickens, I became very attached to them as pets. I read a book called The Art of The Hen, about the zen of chicken keeping. A lot of chicken owners I’ve spoken with have experienced a weird zen practice around raising hens. It creates a nice circle of life in the backyard. They’re always digging and aerating the garden, eating scraps, creating fertilizer. The chickens help the soil, and then the garden helps the chickens. A whole, productive world in your backyard. And they are friendly pets, that I enjoy taking care of. For kids especially, it’s good to learn how to care for and feed something. To be responsible for them, and then when they pass, to learn about life and death. Especially if they get the chance to see a chick raised from an egg. They get to experience that whole life from beginning to end. What’s the hardest part? It does require a bit of routine, so there’s a learning curve when you first get started. You can leave them for a couple of days, and they’ll be fine, but you do have to stay aware of their needs. And it’s always hard when they pass away. Especially if you’ve gotten to know their personalities; you’ll miss them like any other pet when they’re gone. What do you wish you’d known, starting out? I didn’t even realize it was possible to accidentally be given rooster chicks. All four of my first chicks turned out to be roosters. So that was unexpected. Also, I would have built the coop myself, looking back. I got a pre-fab kit, but it wouldn’t have been too hard to construct something, myself. Are there any misconceptions about backyard chickens you’d like to clear up? Often the big question I get is, “So, can they lay eggs without a rooster?” Yes. In fact, if you have a rooster, you may end up with fertilized eggs that cannot be eaten. Also, I think raising hens is a lot easier than people think; they’re great pets. Very low-stress. And you can look for breeds that are friendlier, or breeds that can be used as show chickens, or that produce colorful eggs. There’s a whole world of chickens out there. montereybayparent.com

Big Sur!
Big Sur has many family-friendly activities, ranging from short hiking trails to nature reserves spotted with tide pools. Whether you’re looking for an adventure in the Redwoods or a relaxing place to spot migrating whales, Big Sur possesses limitless prospects. Here are five kid-friendly places you can’t miss while exploring Big Sur.
1.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve Called the “crown jewel of the State Park systems,” Point Lobos is a prime place for sightseeing, photography, painting, nature study, picnicking, SCUBA diving and jogging. There are rare plant species, endangered archeological sites, unique geological formations, and incredibly rich flora and fauna in both the sea and on land. Point Lobos is made up of headlands, coves, and rolling meadows. The offshore area is a popular spot for diving and is home for sea lions, seals, sea otters and migrating whales (December-May). Hik-
ing trails follow the shoreline and lead to hidden coves. This area was home to the turn-of-the-century whaling and abalone industry. A cultural history museum (open 9-5pm) remains at Whalers Cove, a small cabin built by Chinese fishermen from that era. Cost: $10 per car for day use only Hours: 8am-7pm (last entry at 6:30pm)
2.
Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park Near mile marker 35.8 on Highway 1, the park is 37 miles south of Carmel Are you looking for a short hike that it extremely worthwhile? The ½ mile round trip Waterfall Outlook Trail located at Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park is just that. The almost flat stroll ends an oceanfront overlook with immaculate views of McWay Falls, which was a favorite spot of Big Sur pioneer woman Julia Pfeiffer Burns, for whom the park is named. to a sandy inlet below. This beach isn’t open to the public, but the sight is completely worth checking out. A panoramic view of the ocean and miles of rugged coastline is available from the higher elevations along the trails east of Highway 1. Cost: $10 per car, per day. Your entrance fee allows you access to all California State Parks until sundown. Hours: The park is open to day use visitors a half hour before sunrise to half hour after sunset. Camping: Two environmental campsites are located on the west side of Highway 1 south of McWay Cove. Both sites are hike-in only, and no vehicle access is permitted. Reservations should be made six months in advance. 1-800-4447275 or book online https://www. reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/
3.
Limekiln State Park The park is 56 miles south of Carmel, off Highway One; two miles south of Lucia. Limekiln features breathtaking views of the Big Sur Coast, the beauty of the redwoods, the rugged coast and the cultural history of limekilns. The park has 24 campsites. An exceptional and fairly level hike through redwoods and along several lush creeks, with both a waterfall and the historic limekilns, is among the sights. The Limekiln Trails are well-maintained and short with modest elevation gain and a series of creek crossings to keep things interesting. There is
also a short walk to the coast! After finishing the trails on the inland side of the park, head west across the parking lot to a road that goes under Highway 1 and out to the beach. There may be a chance for you to spy some dolphins frolicking in the waves 100 yards offshore, especially during the Winter months. Cost: $8 per car Hours: 8am-sunset unless camping Camping: The park has 24 campsites. Visitors will be able to reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance. Bookings may extend from the arrival date to the desired departure date-based on availability and the park’s maximum stay rules. Book online at www.reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/
4.
Andrew Molera State Park Near mile marker 51.2 on Highway 1, the park is located 21 miles south of Carmel In the spectacular Big Sur area, this park is still relatively undeveloped and offers visitors great hiking and beachcombing. Miles of trails wind through meadows, bluffs, beaches and, hilltops. Lesser known than Julia Pfeifer Burns State Park, Andrew Molera offers a great trail along the Big Sur River to vegetated bluffs and a sandy beach. To reach Molera Point, follow the Headlands Trail for the picnic area. To get to the beach, you might need to get your feet wet
unless you can hop across the seasonal footbridge over the river by the picnic area. At the beach, watch the tide and sleeper waves! The beach is well worth the adventure. Cost: $10 per car for day use only Hours: Open ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset
5.
Big Sur River Inn 46800 California 1, Big Sur The Big Sur River Inn first opened 80 years ago as the Apple Pie Inn. Its history parallels the history of Big Sur pioneering families. It was built beside the Big Sur River and guests can lounge on chairs in the river and tangle their feet in the cool water while reading a book or hanging out with friends and family. The River Inn has a restaurant (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner), gift shop, store, gas station and 20 motel rooms. The general store offers everything from camping supplies to a great selection of local wines, made-to-order pizzas, and a burrito bar. They even make smoothies, perfect for the hot summer months! The lodge and restaurant have a rustic log cabin feel, and you can dine indoors or outdoors with a view of the river. Come on a Sunday, and you will catch some outside entertainment and a BBQ! Nicole Amaral is a Monterey native and graduate of California State University of Monterey Bay. Nicole is the Calendar Editor for Monterey Bay Parent. She is the mother of a 5-year old son.
I would love to help your family find the perfect home.

ust about everyone loves BBQ, and even though we’re far from the traditional geographical centers of barbecuing, the Monterey Peninsula has a lot of excellent smoky options to satisfy your meaty needs. Any of these places would be a wise choice for a casual, delicious Father’s Day dinner. Dig in! Little Chicken House 1193 Forest Ave., Pacific Grove This tiny place is a good stop for well-seasoned ribs, rotisserie chicken sandwiches, and brisket. Make sure to try the sweet sauce and sides. Everything is cooked over oak out back, and the smell wafts in as you eat or wait for your order. They also have a drive-thru window. Salinas City BBQ 700 W Market St., Salinas Salinas City BBQ is one of the most highly recommended BBQ places around. They serve excellent brisket, pulled pork, and pulled chicken sandwiches, as well as ribs, steaks, salads, and hot links. The potato salad and coleslaw hold their own against the smoked meat. Any sandwich can be served on garlic bread if you choose. Sandwiches are served with hog wash (vinegarmolasses marinade). They also offer all-you-can-eat pork sliders at lunch. Dessert is a must (try the bread pudding). Be sure to check 16

Don’t miss the smoky brisket, tritip, and tender pulled pork. Be sure to try the spicy sauce. Lots of craft beers on tap round out the experience. This place is owned by the same people as Salinas City BBQ. Prunedale Market 17515 Orchard Ln., Salinas Located in a run-down convenience store and hard to find at first, but the food (and Martin, the friendly, generous owner) make it more than worth the effort. Try the loaded tri-tip sandwich with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, ribs, juicy BBQ chicken, and hearty soups. But beware if you get takeout: your car will smell like smoked meat for days! Cash only. hen I was growing up, my dad was on the road as a salesman, so he was absent during much of the week. My brother and I would anxiously wait for the dinnertime phone call from him each night. We left our mother little time to have a conversation with him; we were so clamoring to talk with our father. Then, when he finally came home, he’d spend most of his time with us so that we could all reconnect. As we got older and my dad’s work was closer to home, he was available for every practice, game, and special event. Golf was a dad-daughter matter, with my father driving me to lessons and helping me before every tournament as well as flying with me when I played out of state. Even today, with a family of my own, I can go out to play golf with my dad and be energized. As an adult, my dad continues to give me encouragement, advice, and love. I doubt I would be the person I am today without him. As a psychologist, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the research that has been done on the benefits of fathers. As Father’s Day approaches, let’s look at what research says dads can do to help raise their children to be happy and productive adults, whether they are single, divorced, or married to their children’s mother. 1. Listen My dad is not a quiet person by nature and when he has something to say, he says it. But he is also the best listener. In a book by Thomas Gordon, Parent Effectiveness Training, the author talks about active listening as a “method of influencing children to find their own solutions to their own problems.” My dad used questions to lead me and my brother to a problem’s solution by taling it through. 2. Social Skills “Social skills are behaviors that promote positive interaction with others and the environment. Some of these skills include showing empathy, participation in group activities, generosity, helpfulness,

communicating with others, negotiating, and problem solving.” (from Social Skills: Laying the Foundation for Success by Sharon A. Lynch, Ed.D and Cynthia G. Simpson,Ph.D). There is no better person to teach social skills than a dad involved in his child’s life. Fathers who talk about and model the qualities of generosity, helpfulness, negotiating and problem-solving have an advantage in providing a child with real-life social skill examples. 3. Expectations My dad expected me to achieve and to work hard. He made suggestions when appropriate, but he did not dictate. Instead, he pointed out people who had worked hard and had been successful. My dad viewed challenges as obstacles to overcome and he encouraged me to do the same. Because he listened to me, I always felt encouraged. He valued my effort. 4. Reliability As a child and teen, I always knew what the rules were. I also knew I could rely on my dad to enforce those rules. The result was a sense of security because I knew what to expect and I also knew I could count on my father to always be there for me. I learned the value of a schedule and attention to the basics like regular meal time and a full night of sleep. 5. Courage “Children need to grow up observing a father who has the courage to do the right thing, even when it has personal costs. They need to see him having the courage to take his responsibilities seriously – even when he’d rather Children need to not. They need him to demongrow up observ- strate the courage to be vulnerable ing a father who and tender as well as strong and has the courage in control. Children need a father to do the right with the courage to be their dad thing, even when regardless of how angry he may it has personal be with their mother, regardless of costs. how disappointed he may be with his own choices, regardless of how successful and interested he is in other realms of his life.” (www.psychcentral.com) There will be challenges in life. There will be failures, let-downs, broken relationships, and many other trials. We all need courage. A caring father is in a unique position to provide examples of courage and give encouragement. This Father’s Day let’s congratulate fathers who try hard to be the best they can be!
