Yes, it’s time for Summer Camp planning! It’s a busy month with St. Patrick’s Day, Easter events (Easter is April 1), and the beginning of the summer camp planning season. That’s right, that’s a thing now. Parents across the county will spend March and April trying to decide which summer camp is the best fit for their children. We’re here to help! We pulled together the basic information about dozens of camps being held in Monterey County to get you started on your journey. Plus, we’re providing extra information about our featured camps. I promise you it’s not too early to book your first choices. As I put together this issue, I wished more than once that there was a summer camp for adults! March 20 marks the beginning of spring, and it’s the perfect time to start a garden with the kids. Whether you stick to containers or go all out and build raised beds, it’s a fun family activity. Your children will learn where their food comes from plus they may even start trying vegetables because they grew them! To get you started, Bayley Freeman has some tips on page 8. Nicole Amaral is tackling the friendship question this month. The question being “why is so dang hard to make friends as an adult?” Maybe we need to take a cue from our toddlers and just go up to the next mom we see on the playground and ask “will you be my friend?” If that isn’t your style, Nicole and her friends have some advice on where to go to find BFF candidates. Finally, because Easter is April 1, we wanted to bring you as many Easter events as we could find. Unfortunately, many of the regular Easter events haven’t been finalized. We pulled together what we could and we’ll keep updating events in the online calendar at MontereyBayParent.com. Check out a few ideas on page 25 to get you started. Here’s hoping you find the perfect summer camp for your kids and a fun-filled March!

MILITARY MOM:

Camp for Military Kids

W

hile we enjoy beautiful weather year-round in Monterey, there’s something special about the start of Spring. Maybe it’s the idea of fresh beginnings, but I always find myself walking with a new pep in my step. There are a lot of opportunities for military families to be excited about in the Monterey area this Spring. Camp Corral provides the opportunity for the children of military members to attend camp for free at one of many host camps around the country. Partner camp YMCA Camp Loma Mar is in the redwood forests of Loma Mar, California from August 5 -11. Applications are currently open and will be available until one month before camp or until all the spots have been filled. If you mix Army green, Marine Corps red, and blue from the Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy, you get the perfect shade of purple. The National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple Camp believes that bringing these kids together for summer camp creates a truly magical experience. Operation Purple Camps are provided free of charge in partnership with participating camps around the United States. Special consideration is given to those kids who have a parent who was wounded, ill, or injured during their service or will be deployed before, during, or shortly after the camp season. Registration for the summer 2018 camps opens on March 5th. It’s an opportunity to send your military kid for a camp experience they will never forget. For our older kids, the start of Spring means getting prepared for college, including scholarship deadlines. The Monterey Bay Officer Spouse’s Club awards numerous scholarships each year to area students. Eligible applicants include members of MBOSC, their families, and family members of Active Duty, retired, or deceased military members in the Monterey Bay area, as well as families of all Naval Postgraduate School students and alumni. Applications are open and will be accepted until April 9th. The Monterey Bay Officer Spouse’s Club will be opening their annual fundraiser, Sip the Peninsula, to the public for the first time. Held in the historic Barbara McNitt Ballroom at the Naval Postgraduate School, this promises to be the perfect date night out. “Sip the Peninsula” celebrates the Monterey Peninsula’s wine heritage and the rich history of the military in the area. All silent auction proceeds go directly to scholarships offered by MBOSC. Camp Corral information can be found at www.campcorral.org. For more information on the Operation Purple camp and to see where your kids can connect with other military kids, visit www.militaryfamily.org. To apply for the MBOSC scholarship or buy tickets to the Sip the Peninsula fundraiser, visit wwww.mbosc.net. Katie Begley is a Navy veteran and military spouse. Katie is an advertising sales executive for Monterey Bay Parent Magazine. She is the mother of 1 year-old and 2 month-old sons. MONTEREY BAY PARENT • march 2018

TOMB RAIDER

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE

Rated PG for some rude humor/ behavior. In Theaters 3/2. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Review: 3 of 5 Reels. Forced to move into a decrepit old house filled with garden gnomes, young Chloe soon discovers that the house is hiding something terrifying. While home alone after school, Chloe and nosy neighbor Liam (Josh Peck) discover that the gnomes are actually alive! Turns out the gnomes have been protecting the planet from menacing little monsters called Troggs, who’ve invaded the house through a portal from another world. When the only solution to stop the Troggs falls into the wrong hands at school, Chloe and Liam team up with the rag-tag group of gnomes to fight off the Trogg invasion and save the world.

Going against her dad’s final wishes, she leaves everything behind in search of his last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.

LOVE, SIMON Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, sexual references, language and teen partying. In Theaters 3/16. Ok for kids 14+. Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels. Everyone deserves a great love story. Things get even more complicated when his secret falls into the hands of the class clown, who blackmails Simon into playing cupid.

PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and some language. In theaters 3/23. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels. Directed by Steve DeKnight and written by Guillermo del Toro, this second film in the Pacific Rim franchise stars John Boyega as rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father (Idris Elba in the first movie) gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), now leading a brave new generation of pilots. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

T

he Monterey Peninsula is a fantastic place to grow a garden. It is especially good for starting a garden with kids, as the climate and long growing season make the whole process much more forgiving than it would be elsewhere. I have no green thumb (in fact, I can kill a cactus in a day or two), but I have successfully grown a large vegetable garden two summers in a row. I used nothing more than basic raised beds, some hastily sewn seeds, daily (or when-Iremember) watering, and plenty of “help” from my young children. It’s pretty darn easy to grow a vegetable and herb garden here, and you can do it, too. Here are some tips to get you started Monterey’s growing season is nearly year-round, so the time to get started is now! Monterey has plenty of farmers markets, local nurseries, and big stores with gardening sections, so you have your pick of where to buy seeds or plants. You can build your garden boxes from a kit or from boards you measure yourself, but no matter what, make sure to put down a double layer of wire mesh under your boxes, to keep furry creatures (groundhogs and others) from burrowing up into your garden and eating all your hard work. You’ll need to decide if you want to start with seeds or plants. Seeds take a few weeks longer, but there is magic in growing vegetables from seeds, especially for young children. The waiting game is a fantastic exercise in forced patience. The first green shoots they spy will bring shouts of joy—an unbeatable moment for all. When it comes time to choose your plants or seeds, you should let your kids pick out some vegetables they like or are excited to grow. After all, the real purpose of cultivating a garden is to have a final edible product, and it’s no fun if the adults are the only ones enjoying the 8

Playing in the Dirt! Spring Gardening With Your Kids fruits of all that labor. Even picky eaters could get excited about fresh vegetables if they helped grow and nurture them. Steer them towards vegetables that can be eaten raw, straight off the plant: green or purple beans, sugar snap peas, lettuces, cherry tomatoes, and carrots are all delicious and easy to grow. Here’s another tip: once the garden is in full swing, let kids snack from it whenever they please. If I send my kids out to pick beans and peas to go with dinner, and they come back

empty-handed but have eaten their afternoon snack out there, I consider it a win. Vegetables are vegetables, and I don’t mind if they eat them right off the plants. It’s a fun activity for them to do with friends, too. Kids love to be in the garden, so teach them a few parameters (don’t pick unripe fruits/vegetables, don’t trample the plants) and let them enjoy it. Enjoy the growing Monterey has to offer, and start your spring garden soon.

Friendship advice from local moms!

Why is it so hard to make mom friends? M aking new friends is hard! This statement has always rung true for me, but once I became a parent, it became even more of a challenge to find my tribe. Being an “older” mom, many of my friends had already been parents for well over a decade. Another issue was that many moms went back to work full-time and I decided to work primarily from home. I needed some new friends, and I needed them fast! First things first, I registered my little one for Mommy & Me classes at Parents’ Place at the Pacific Grove Adult School. Although I learned so much and hit it off with several moms, I still felt like I didn’t fit in 100%. I decided to create playdates on a Meetup group called, Marina Moms. That’s where I met fellow mom Erika. She came to Tatum’s Garden in Salinas with her baby 10

montereybayparent.com

who was three months younger than my son. We connected right away, and then the real adventures began! I asked Erika to relay her experience with connecting with other moms. “I didn’t make my first mom friend until my oldest was 14 months old. I battled Postpartum Depression and did not realize how lonely I was. I was so fortunate to meet Nicole and learn about Parents’ Place and Play & Learn classes through The Parenting Connection. It changed my life being able to lean on other moms. It was reassuring to know that my daughter had friends and was part of a community as well.“ – Erika Armstrong, Salinas I was curious to see how other local moms had met their mom friends,

so I asked around.

I’ve met mom friends at Mommy and Me classes through The Parenting Connection and the Salinas Adult School (Parent Center). I also met them through baby groups on Facebook, and I recently met a bunch of moms at my son’s elementary school. – Sarah Ann Ricks, Marina I met mom friends at gym daycare, Parents’ Place, preschool, church, sports (karate, b-ball, swim, soccer), neighbors, other clubs or groups such as nature school, library story time, La Leche League, Awana, and I’m part of a babysitting co-op. One on one play dates after meeting people at these various groups is vital to establish deeper connections. – Camilla Miller, Pacific Grove

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • march 2018

I love the families we met at Parents’ Place and am so grateful for the support they continue to share with me six years later. We met more families at The Parenting Connection. Meeting a ton of new families who are attending school with my son. And of course, all of our ‘new’ parent friends have introduced us to other ‘new’ parent friends. I love that this is such a small, tight-knit community. – Wendy Root Askew, Marina Four years later, my son and Erika’s daughter are BFFs! Even though our playdates and the Mommy & Me classes are less frequent, the friendship and bond we all share has remained strong. Almost every mom I talked with mentioned that they had met friends through Mommy & Me classes or a Mom’s group. Luckily, Monterey County has tons of resources for parents including Monterey Bay Parent Magazine’s active Facebook group. Making friends may be more difficult once you have children but reaching out and taking a small step will get you moving in the right direction!

summer camp

Y

ou are considering a summer camp, but how to choose? There’s a camp that is ideally suited for every child, providing a summer of growth and fun whether your child attends a day or overnight camp, a specialized or traditional camp. With a little help from the camp professionals at the American Camp Association, here is some sound advice that helps parents sort through the choices and benefits that camp delivers. How to Decide When Your Child is Ready for Camp Children are ready for new experiences at different stages. Parents know their children best and these questions can help gauge whether this is the summer your child will start camp. What is your child’s age, and what is your perception of his or her readiness level? Children under 7 who have not had overnight experiences may do better with a day camp as their first camp experience. Has your child had positive overnight experiences away from home? Visiting relatives or friends? Were these separations easy or difficult?

The Perfect Fit Camp can last for just a few days or stretch to all summer long. It’s well worth the trouble to investigate the variety of choices offered by camps before your child packs a backpack. These questions help you consider the options. Near or Far? Where do you want your child to go to camp? Locally or far away? While each camp experience has something unique to offer your child, this is an opportunity for families to assess what they value for their campers. Benefits of Camp Nearby • Easier to evaluate and visit • Friends and family are likely familiar with camp • Minimal travel costs • Likely contact with classmates or children from same region Benefits of Camp Far Away • More choices • Different experiences, different geography, e.g., mountains or oceans—even different languages • Promotes independence, particu-

larly for adolescent campers • Diversity of campers • Chance for family to visit and vacation at close of camp More Choices Short or Long? Camps offer widely varying options to help parents and children reach their goals for summer fun and exploration. Talking with your child about the goals you both share helps determine which choice is right for you. Benefits of Short Sessions (one-three weeks) • First-time or younger campers have a chance to learn new skills • Bonds develop with other campers and staff • Great exposure to camp experience with less expense • Minimizes homesickness Benefits of Longer Sessions (four-twelve weeks) • Strong sense of belonging to camp community • Chance to learn new skills • Development of specialized skills • Multiple opportunities for learning and enrichment

• Lifelong friendships • Opportunities to contribute to camp culture Traditional, Specialty, and Specialty? Choices abound when it comes to camp programs. One may offer a variety of activities geared to campers of all ages and skill levels, others, because of their setting and expertise, may concentrate on one or two activities while providing traditional activities as well. Benefits of Traditional Camps • Wide variety of activities • Chance for campers to try new activities • Exposure to more campers and staff
