This Month we’re all about planning! The holiday season is upon us and we know the coming months are the busiest of the year. We’re here to help as much as possible. First off, if you’re looking at private schools for your child, this issue is tailor made for you. On pages 1017, you’ll find all the info you need to start your search for the right school for your child. There are so many good options that we know it’s a difficult decision and we hope the guide makes it a little easier. Secondly, if you’d like to get a head start on gift giving, Tara Tudisco has twelve great ideas for “experience” gifts on pages 20-21. Instead of more stuff this year, why not gift a museum membership or a cooking class gift certificate? If your parents or in-laws aren’t local, send them the article to give them some ideas what your family might like. A membership that gives your family hours of fun all year is the perfect gift from grandparents! Finally, Nicole Amaral has compiled an extensive list of Christmas tree lighting events and lighted parades. They begin around Thanksgiving so you need to plan now to be sure you attend the ones that most appeal to you. There are so many festive events that you’re sure to start your Christmas off on the right note by attending one or more. The issue is rounded out by military events, an informative article on why horseback riding is a great choice for your child, and some suggestions from Gail Root on how to keep your family stories alive. appy November! It is hard to believe that we only have two months left in 2018! Where did this year go? With a new baby in our house, our days and weeks have felt like a blur, but I am so thankful for our little family. Seeing the love between my son and daughter is so special and this year has been full of moments I will not forget! Thanksgiving is a day that I look forward to all year and one where I eat my heart out and throw out any diet or meal plan I may be following at the time! I honestly couldn’t pick just one, but my favorite Thanksgiving menu items include sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. Who doesn’t love a day that involves eating yummy food and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV? As a military family, many of us won’t get to spend the holiday with our extended families back home, so I encourage you to reach out to other friends to host a “Friendsgiving.” A “Friendsgiving” is a potluck on steroids. The host makes the turkey, and all of the guests bring side dishes, beverages, desserts, etc. It is an easy alternative and allows for less stress since the host isn’t required to plan and make the entire meal. This is such a great way to meet neighbors and connect with fellow military families. Don’t feel like cooking? Many local restaurants and hotels feature amazing Thanksgiving Buffets and Dinners. One that I love to recommend is on the campus of Naval Postgraduate School at the historic Hotel Del Monte Barbara McNitt Ballroom. This year, the Thanksgiving Day Buffet will take place at 2 pm. The menu features a wide variety of options, with all of the traditional Thanksgiving fixings in a beautiful setting. Reservations are required and can be made at mwrcatering@nps.edu . Military adults are $35, Military children ages 5-10 are $15 and children under 5 are free. Another fabulous event to put on your calendar is Corkz & Forkz at Hotel Del Monte on November 14 from 5:308:00 pm. The tickets are $40 and military, retiree and DoD welcome. This is a monthly event, so if you can’t make it this month, save the date for next month, December 19! The evening in-

It will take place on Friday, November 16 at 3 pm, with preregistration at 2:30 pm on the day of the event. The run starts at the front of Hotel Del Monte and continues around the campus. Finally, kick off the Christmas holiday season with the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Hotel Del Monte on Friday, November 30 from 6:00-8: 00 pm.

My family and I attended this event last year, and it was so much fun. This complimentary event includes hot chocolates, cookies, crafts for the kids and an opportunity to meet Santa Claus and take photos. The tree is a beautiful backdrop as well! The Value Of Family Stories
W
ith the approaching holiday season, and visits with extended family, consider using the time together to learn more, ask questions, and pay attention to family history. What do you remember about the stories you heard from your grandparents? Did they tell you tales about your parent when they were young? I remember that it was particularly fun to hear about my father “getting in trouble” for pranks he played on his siblings. This upstanding, proper, professional man that I knew did that? I recently had a conversation with a cousin I have not seen for decades. We talked about our parents, all passed on now and then moved to talk about our mutual grandparents. Because she lived close to our Grandmother, whom I only occasionally visited, my cousin was able to share her memories about things I never knew. I gained a new respect and love for my grandmother as a result. Researching family history has become a national hobby. In the book “Unconditional Love: A Guide to Navigating the Joys and Challeng-
es of Being a Grandparent Today” author Jane Isay says: “Our lives have touched at least five generations. In most families, that amounts to a century. History and people and events, joys and tragedies, happiness and craziness–all these elements are embraced in the generations that form our families.” There is particular value for children to hear these stories. Researchers Marshall P. Duke and Robyn Fivush from Emory University have discovered that this shared information nurtures children emotionally and psychologically. Isay writes: “These researchers report that children who are informed about their family history have higher self-esteem, a better sense of their capacity to control what happens to them, and lower levels of anxiety. These qualities turn out to be important for success in life.” Don’t be shy about initiating conversations with your children and grandchildren and sharing stories of your past. Bring a few photo albums with you and talk to your grandchildren about their ancestors. Share stories about your parents and
grandparents. Talk to your grandchildren about your childhood and holiday celebrations from their parents’ childhoods. Your grandchildren will delight in seeing photos of you when you were their age and hearing about how things have changed. The holidays are a perfect time to bring the generations together through shared stories so don’t miss this unique opportunity to bond with your grandchildren. he other day I saw a meme on social media that read, “You’re never too old to say ‘horses’ when you drive past some horses.” There is something about the majesty of horses that is both calming and awe-inspiring. This duality allows horses to be great teachers and can help children grow and thrive. Ann Swinker, Ph.D., a professor of Animal Science at Penn State University found “Handling, riding, and caring for a horse or pony can develop a host of positive traits in a child, including responsibility, accountability, patience, level-headedness, empathy, kindness, and self-discipline.” Physical Benefits According to the American Heart Association, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese. The physical benefits of horseback riding are numerous and varied. It is an activity that can improve balance and gross motor skills. Sitting up and moving on a horse enhances core strength
and further enhances muscular development. Riding also develops fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and boosts the cardiovascular system. Cognitive Benefits Horseback riding improves learning by activating the sympathetic nervous system and increases memory. Riding also presents children with situations such as: getting around obstacles or dealing with uncertain settings, that require problem-solving and quick thinking. Focus and control are further developed the more children ride. For younger children, the simple task of counting ears, legs, and hoof-beats boost both learning and fun. For those on the autism spectrum, horses facilitate an emotional connection while providing structure. Riding also offers sensory benefits in regards to speed, incline, and movement. Horses provide children struggling with behavioral issues by creating a safe space that calms aggressiveness, nervousness, and anxiety by allowing them to slow down and distress. Local mom, Aerin Murphy Broaddus, stated “Perry (age 3) started riding lessons just before her second birthday at Bella Mar Stables in Watsonville. They’ve been fantastic! She’s gained confidence and improved her motor skills. We really like that she’s learning important lessons about appreciating and taking care of animals.” In our hectic and overstimulated world, we could all use an activity that slows us down and allows us to take in the scenery.
