from the publisher… Celebrating Thanksgiving With an Attitude of Gratitude I’m old enough to remember the impact Oprah Winfrey made when she introduced author Sarah Ban Breathnach and her groundbreaking book “Simple Abundance” on Winfrey’s talk show. Millions of viewers, myself included, were introduced to the concept of a daily gratitude list. It’s a simple practice: write down three things each day that you are grateful for or that bring you happiness. It made immediate sense to me plus it was easy, only taking a few minutes each day. I started my gratitude list, and it wasn’t long before I noticed a real difference in my life. Keeping an eye out for those “thank you” moments helped me pay closer attention to the little things that added up to a good life. Those once-in-a-lifetime occasions like your wedding or birth of a child are wonderful but few and far between. But that gorgeous sunset or a perfectly steeped cup of tea? Those moments happen daily, and when you pay attention to them, they multiply. Diane Turner-Miller’s article “Celebrate Thanksgiving With An Attitude of Gratitude” on pages 14-15 is all about acknowledging the small moments and helping our children notice them as well. It’s a perfect reminder to start off the holiday season with a grateful heart and an appreciation for the little things. Monterey and Santa Cruz counties both offer a wealth of excellent private school options. A good part of this issue focuses on offering parents the information they need to make the best choice for their family if private school is on the horizon. Educational consultant Helayne Frank offers five useful tips for choosing a private school on page 8 that will help you get started on the journey. Following Helayne’s article, you’ll find listings for all area private schools plus additional information on our featured schools on page 13. November is also about getting ready for the December holidays. Nicole Amaral compiled a list of Christmas tree lighting ceremonies and light parades for us on pages 16-18. Plus, Hayley Freeman found holiday crafts shows that will be a fun option for gift shopping. See her list on page 19. Happy Thanksgiving! May yours be filled with family, friends, and delicious food.

Think Twice Before Offering Advice
M
y son has always struggled with daytime napping and mostly prefers to sleep in my lap. Sweet, right? Yes, but with a new baby coming in a couple of months, it was time to officially give him his eviction notice from napping in my lap. After trying numerous methods, we ultimately decided to try sleep training. We put him in his crib for an afternoon nap and left the room. After an hour of crying, both him and me, I heard a knock on my door. It was a neighbor who decided to give me some unsolicited advice. She didn’t think that letting him cry like that was healthy. I know her advice came from a place of wanting to help. But rather than feeling helped, I immediately felt defeated. Maybe I didn’t have this motherhood thing down. Maybe I was failing as a parent. A lot of emotions filled my head—anger, shame, frustration. But the one that stuck with me was self-doubt. All because of some advice. Why is it so bad to give advice? After all, you’re just trying to provide the benefit of experience to a new mom or dad. Advice isn’t necessarily bad but consider what you may be taking away from the person you are trying to help. New parents work hard to build up their confidence. A simple comment can fill a parent’s head with that dreaded self-doubt. That is especially true when the parent isn’t asking for advice. Chances are they are struggling with something, which is why you want to offer advice in the first place. The key is to wait to be asked for your insight. If a new parent asks for advice, feel free to give it. Make sure that it comes with some encouragement that they are doing a great job, whether they choose to follow your advice or try another approach. When you see a parent struggling, don’t immediately jump in with advice. If you want to help, simply ask how you can do so. If the parent declines, smile and let it go. Respect the boundaries that they set. If you have been the recipient of unsolicited advice try to take it as it comes. It can be difficult to contain your frustration when people make comments about your parenting. If it does escape, don’t feel bad. Just try to stay calm and positive for you and your baby. That may mean sharing the rationale behind your decision, making some sort of polite, or simply exiting the conversation. You know your child and your family, which makes you the best person to decide what will work. Katie Begley is a Navy veteran and military spouse. Finding a Good Tutor for Your Child
f your child has a learning disability, poor or declining grades, poor time management skills, or difficulty understanding his or her homework, it may be time to consider a tutor. But how do you find a good reliable tutor you can trust? How to find a tutor Your child’s teacher and the school administrator are a good place to start. They might be able to recommend a tutor who works with other students in the school. Also, chances are one of your child’s friends has a tutor. So ask other parents if they know a tutor they recommend. Online tutoring is another popular choice today. But bear in mind, it isn’t the right thing for every child. Also, do your research. Many tutoring websites receive only fair to mediocre reviews at best. The costs for online tutoring aren’t always consistent with quality. Free tutoring If tutoring isn’t in your budget, you still have several options. The first place to start is with your child’s school. Some schools still offer one-on-one tutoring programs for eligible students. Many schools also offer after-school group tutoring where chil-
dren stay after to work on their homework with a teacher available to assist. Also, some teachers offer after-school tutoring for their students. If tutoring isn’t available at your child’s school, ask trusted family members, neighbors, and friends if they can help. You might be surprised to discover someone you know is very enthused to help your struggling child. Contact your local high school and community college. Students majoring in certain subjects or teaching may be required to perform a certain number of hours tutoring. For that reason, students often offer to tutor for free. Another option, the popular Khan Academy website offers free online video tutorials for students of all levels. Visit https://www.khanacademy.org/ What to look for in a tutor There are several factors to consider when looking for a tutor for your child. Is the tutor qualified? Your best bet is to look for someone with a teaching degree since tutoring requires skills not everyone possesses. For younger students, as long as the tutor has a teaching degree, specialization in the particular subject in which your child is struggling isn’t necessary. From high school and beyond though, you should look for a tutor with expertise in the

particular subjects in which your child needs help. Does the tutor have the right personality? A tutor should be patient, empathetic, positive, passionate, creative, and fun. These are important characteristics to ensure your child can learn from the tutor and walk away with selfconfidence. Also, the tutor’s personality should be a good fit for your child. You want a tutor who can connect with your child and vice versa. Is the tutor flexible? Each child has their own learning style whether it’s visual, aural, physical, verbal, logical, or any combination of these. In addition, some kids are solitary learners whereas others are social learners who enjoy learning in groups. Look for a setting and tutor that fits your child’s style. Does the tutor have excellent references? When using an online tutoring service, you’ll often find reviews from previous clients. If you find your tutor offline or don’t see a significant number of reviews, ask for several references. Bear in mind though, the references a tutor provides might not be an entirely accurate depiction of their character and experience. So use due diligence for your child’s safety and to ensure you’re paying for quality service. Kimberly Blaker is an author and freelance writer. Five Tips for Choosing a
Private School
Y
ou’re attracted to the smaller class sizes and state-of-the-art facilities that private schools offer. But how do you know which one is the right fit for your child? Following these five tips can simplify the process.
1.
Research the School’s Accomplishments Look on the school’s website for evidence of academic excellence. Check to see if the latest technology programs are offered, and perhaps they have an award-winning arts program as well. School awards and individual student achievements will be prominently displayed on the website. Although your child may be starting as a pre-schooler, look ahead to the future and evaluate how well the school prepares students for college. Test scores and lists of colleges attended by graduating students are important to consider.
2.
Observe the School Environment Just as important as a school’s test scores is its environment. Attend open houses and pay attention to how the administrators present the school’s goals. Take advantage of opportunities to visit classrooms to see the school in action. Observe how teachers interact with students, and see if the students are actively involved in the lessons. If your child is invited to spend some time in a classroom, be sure to get her feedback about the experience. If possible, attend a PTA meeting to learn more about school policies and the ins and outs of the school. You may also learn about the level of family participation and volunteer opportunities.
3.
Network and Ask Questions Other parents can provide a wealth of information about the school, especially if their children are in attendance there. Whether a neighbor or a parent you meet at an open house, ask questions about their students’ experiences. Also, ask school administrators about how they address different learning styles and behavior issues. If your child had a learning difference and received an IEP, or individualized educational program, at another school, find out how he will be evaluated and what kind of accommodations will be made for his learning needs. By the same token, if you have a gifted child, discover ways in which the school can cultivate and advance individual talents and interests.
8

4.
Evaluate Your Priorities Once you find a private school that you like, decide how well it meets your family’s needs. One thing to consider may be how far the school is from your home. If bus service isn’t available, you may be your child’s ride throughout her school years. Many families also evaluate the financial commitment involved in sending a child to private school. Some families receive scholarships to offset tuition costs, while others make a substantial financial investment. This can equate to 13 years if the student attends the private school from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.
5.
Trust Your Instincts The decision of where your child attends school is an important one. The school’s academic profile, ambiance, and your family’s needs are essential to consider. In the end, only you know what’s best for your child. Trust your instincts. Choose a private school that you feel in your heart is just the right place for your child to excel, reach for the stars and shine. Giving Thanks
C
ultivating an attitude of gratitude demands a year round commitment. We can muster up grateful platitudes once a year for a Thanksgiving holiday dinner yet yearn to dig deeper when tired expressions no longer ring true with the actual experience of our personal and family lives. Most of us need to experience loss and disappointment as an impetus for finding an authentic sense of gratitude. Too often, we don’t really appreciate something until it is gone. When I lost a husband and my children lost their father, at ages 12 and 14; our family hit a low point from which we needed to heal. Somehow, we muddled through the grieving process. There were times when we thrashed and grasped at finding something to be thankful for. We were reaching for a life raft. The act of reaching for the ring of gratitude was a necessary part of grieving. Work and time was required to make the transformation, to shift; to move away from the heavy, painful feelings to something lighter, something brighter. Comforting holidays with family were instrumental in moving this process along. In Maya Angelou’s last memoir, Mom & Me & Mom, she described a

Celebrate Thanksgiving with an Attitude of Gratitude point in her life where she was confused and disoriented. Her voice teacher, Wilkie, was the one who was finally able to help her. Exacerbated, he ordered her to sit down and said, “I want you to write down your blessings.” He prompted, “…think of the millions of people all over the world who cannot hear a choir, or symphony, or their own babies crying. Write down, ‘I can hear— Thank God.’” She wrote down the basics: I can hear. I can see. I can speak. I have a son. I have a mother. I have a brother. I can dance. I can sing. I can cook. I can read. I can write. This seemingly simple exercise allowed Maya Angelou, in that moment, to experience the transformation that she so desperately needed. She recounted, “From that encounter on, whether my days are stormy or sunny and if my nights are glorious or lonely, I maintain an attitude of gratitude. If pessimism insists on occupying my
thoughts, I remember there is always tomorrow. Today I am blessed.” The littlest things that we do with heart and humility serve to lay the foundation for creating a thankful home, a thankful family, and a thankful child. Best practices for cultivating gratitude include every-day things: Be thankful for every meal. Rekindle a tried and true traditional “grace” or create for the first time a simple blessing to be used at mealtime. This may take some experimentation and repetition in order to find the most meaningful practice for your family. Most kids don’t see an example of other families saying grace while dining at Subway or Burger King. In more public settings, a short period of silence might be the trick to acknowledge thankfulness. On the other hand, your family may be comfortable sharing your blessing in any setting, whether at home, the park, or your favorite fast food venue. The power of gratitude was strikingly displayed in the film, The Blind Side. The scene depicting Michael Oher sitting alone at the table in honest gratitude for the well prepared meal before him was set in stirring contrast to the

privileged family too distracted and consumed by the football game to give any thought to the food that they took for granted. It was Michael’s example that brought the rest of the family back to the table. Keep a gratitude journal. Creating a journal is an intimate activity to share with your children. The empty page is there to capture creativity and becomes a rich canvas for recording and fostering the developing appreciation of gratitude. Provide the tools, give examples, make lists, and ask thought provoking questions. What are you thankful for today? What did you see or hear someone else do that was helpful? How do you know when someone really means what they say? Be ready to respond to questions from your children that contribute to a continuing dialogue. Remember to say “thank you.” Saying thank you to acquaintances or strangers may feel more natural than saying thank you to your closest family members; the ones who are most easily taken for granted. The familiar social conventions of please and thank you that we teach our children and that we have practiced for a lifetime have a way of creating a safe, courteous distance. In contrast, a simple, sincere “thank you” said when a spouse brings over a cup of coffee can become an opportunity for emotional intimacy. A sibling can offer thanks for homework help that neutralizes the effects of a previous conflict. Unexpected moments of true gratitude bring heightened awareness of important changes in the people around us. Read stories about perseverance and overcoming hardship. The winter that my children and I read through Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series was a cozy opportunity to become acquainted with the indomitable spirit of pioneer families who ventured west and whose courage and perseverance shaped a country. If Laura and her family could live through hardship with grace and gratitude then we can too.

Be kind to yourself. Thank yourself for doing your best. Your children will notice. Be of service. Participate in service projects as a family. The good feelings that result rub off onto your children and soon they could be the ones who are looking for ways to help. Nurturing gratitude throughout the year is the best preparation for celebrating the once a year Thanksgiving Holiday. Embrace the day with gusto. Put up the pilgrim and turkey decorations. Gather with family for a delicious feast and celebrate joys as well as hardships. Turn on the football game. Make the most of traditions from the past and create new ones just for your family. And, as always, count your blessings. Diane Turner Maller is a freelance writer who is most thankful for the gift of family and for periods of peace that she treasures in her newly-found, quiet, small town life.
