from the publisher… Fall Fun and New Babies! I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love October, what’s not to love about pumpkins, fall festivals, and Halloween? I’m sure you’re enjoying our adorable cover as much as I enjoyed the photo shoot. Our sweet cover model Sebastian spent a good deal of time trying to eat the dirt during the photo shoot at The Farm in Salinas. Luckily, the dirt is organic, and his mom and dad were pretty laid back about Sebastian getting messy. We’re devoting a good portion of the issue to a huge list of October events. You’ll find dozens of Fall Festivals and Halloween events to keep your family busy all month long. You’ll also find a list of local pumpkin patches on page 10, so you can scout out the perfect specimen for your jack-o’-lantern. To round out the October fun, Nicole Amaral (who has been very busy writing for this issue!) played ghost buster by scouting five area locations that are widely believed to be haunted. Check one or more out in person, if you dare! The other focus of this issue is pregnancy and childbirth. I’m surprised when I hear a new mom mention that she’s not doing any birth training. I found classes to be so valuable in knowing what to expect and how to deal with each stage that I am always encouraging pregnant moms to “train” for birth like they would an athletic event. I know it helped me feel more in control and made labor easier. Alison Chance writes about birth training options on pages 14-15. She offers some great choices and resources to get you started. If you have a gift to buy for a new baby, check out Alyssa Chirco’s article on outside-the-box gift suggestions on pages 16-17. A maternity pedicure or massage? Yes! The new mom and dad will get all sorts of onesies and gadgets, why not give mom the gift of relaxation? I also want to alert you to our November issue. We’ll be focusing on private schools with an extensive directory of options. If your school wants to be included, give us a call at 831-582-1373, and we’ll give you all the details on the issue. Enjoy your October and a very Happy Halloween!

Halloween Fun: On Base & Off

A

s I sit here enjoying my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season, I can’t help but get excited about fall. It is, without a doubt, my favorite season and based on the buzz on social media; I’m not alone. This October marks a couple of important milestones for my family—my son’s first birthday and first real Halloween! We had just come home from the hospital last year, and aside from spitting up on an orange onesie, we didn’t mark the holiday in any notable way. Now that we are a military family of three, how exactly should we “do” Halloween in a new community? Fortunately, the military community embraces and celebrates kids, especially during holidays. Halloween is no exception. Both the La Mesa and Fort Ord housing communities are full of kids, which means fun and safe trick-or-treating. Sidewalks are spacious and clean, so you won’t need to worry about being seen while walking on the curb on winding city streets. If you live in military housing, it’s a great chance to get to know new neighbors and make new friends. Area businesses also get in the Halloween spirit. The Del Monte Center in Monterey and the Lighthouse District shops in Pacific Grove both host free family events during the afternoon, making it a perfect way to celebrate Halloween without staying out late with young kids. If you haven’t visited Science Saturday at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, the Halloween event is the perfect time to start. Free admission with bats, spiders, and other creepy-crawly exhibits! This year’s Halloween provides an opportunity to thank our military and first responders working so hard to help those affected by recent storms in Texas and Florida. Consider donating some of your child’s candy to Operation Gratitude, who will package the donations and send them to those serving. Safety guidelines are important during Halloween. Don’t forget to inspect all candy and treats before letting your child consume them. When trick-or-treating, keep an eye out for vehicles on the road. Make sure that you and your child can be easily seen by motorists, especially as the sun goes down. Keeping kids safe is still priority #1. Happy Halloween! Katie Begley is a Navy veteran and military spouse. Katie is an advertising sales executive for Monterey Bay Parent Magazine. She is the mother of an 11-month old son.

Looking for

Ghosts? We found them in Monterey County!

I

grew up listening to my family tell ghostly tales of haunted places. The catch was that these spooky dwellings were right in my hometown of Monterey. In honor of Halloween, here are my favorite seven haunted places in Monterey County.

1.

Naval Post-Graduate School (formerly Hotel Del Monte) University Circle #M10, Monterey The Hotel Del Monte was known to be the grandest and classiest on the West Coast. It was built in 1880, thanks to businessman Charles Crocker who helped fund the construction. Legend is that the ghost of Mr. Crocker haunts the Main Building, known as Herrmann Hall. Gardens and secret passage ways wrap around the beautiful building. 12

montereybayparent.com

October 2017 MBP.indd 12

Charles Crocker’s ghost has been seen countless times throughout the hotel. Many strange occurrences, such as moving objects, banging bread trays, shattering glasses, taps on employees’ shoulders, and the antique elevator moving by itself, are said to be due to Mr. Crocker’s restlessness. Busboys came into the hall banquet room one morning to start setting up and to their horror found a full set of coffee cups dangling on one of the massive chandeliers! The chandelier was only accessible by a tall ladder, and there was no sign of one nearby. It remains a mystery even to this day.

2.

The Stokes Adobe (Restaurant 1833) 500 Hartnell Street, Monterey This Monterey landmark was built in

1833 and later sold to James Stokes, a British sailor who passed himself off as a pharmacist. Many people mysteriously died in his care, including Governor Jose Figueroa. Stokes later died tragically in the home. From 1890-1948, a socialite named Hattie resided there and passed away in the old adobe. A team of paranormal experts was only able to discern clumps of fog in Hattie’s room. Even to this day, sightings of Stokes himself, wandering the halls in his white coat are common. The old adobe houses the popular Restaurant 1833, and each room is decorated such as it would look many years ago. Workers are still quick to offer up a story about the haunts that surround them each day. The bar menu includes two sections for “Elixirs” and ‘House

The Carmel Mission 3080 Rio Road, Carmel The mission was built directly adjacent to an ancient American Indian burial ground in 1770. The mission buildings and lands were secularized by the Mexican government in 1833 and had fallen into disrepair by the mid-19th century. By 1851 the Mission was abandoned and dilapidated. A visitor, perhaps looking for something to steal, strolled into the sanctuary where Father Junipero Serra, the Missions’ founder was buried. The prospective thief suddenly tripped as he reached the altar and slammed down to his knees. This became a reoccurring event, even though the stones leading up to the altar are flat and smooth. The story of the “tripping stone” was that casual visitors who did not show proper reverence would be tripped to land on their knees directly above Father Serra’s final resting place. There is said to be several spirits haunting the Mission, including the ghost of a dog that is heard but not seen. The spirit of Father Junipero Serra has also been observed walking around with a candle at night and occasionally appears inside the chapel on New Year’s Eve. The ghost of a young American Indian boy has also been spotted walking around the exterior of the Mission in the dead of night.

Point Sur Lighthouse 37028 Hwy 1, Big Sur This lighthouse built in 1889 is the only complete turn-of-the-20thcentury light station open to the public in California. One might find any number of lost souls there including a station keeper’s wife, the spirits of the sailors of a dozen ships that wrecked close by or two men killed in 1935 when the USS Macon went down at the point. The lighthouse used to be extremely isolated and only accessible via ship. More than twenty ghosts are said to reside in or around the Point Sur Lighthouse. Many sightings and strange happenings have occurred. There is a sad tale of a lightkeeper’s adult son who died of consumption. (Tuberculosis). Workers have sighted a tall man in dark blue, 19th-century clothing, hanging around the lighthouse. They have told tales of cash registers ringing and spitting out tons of tape, even while unplugged. Ghost Hunters visited the point and all witnessed hearing a little girl singing outside the lighthouse and even recorded the eerie event. Julie Nunes, a docent, and ghost hunter had mentioned that this same little girl’s singing among other voices has been heard for many years. Any brave souls over the age of six are invited to the lighthouse for moonlight, ghost hunt, and Halloween tours. Check www.pointsur.org for hours and tour information.

Los Coches Adobe Highway 101 and Arroyo Seco Soledad Originally built as a Rancho in 1843, Los Coches Adobe has been a Wells Fargo Station Agent office, post office, stage coach stop and finally a brothel where the Madame was said to be a mass murderer. Many locals have spotted a ghostly lady in black walking the grounds and have heard the screams of trapped miners coming from an old well. Some trespassers reported that they had seen a man in the trees right next to the old adobe. The spookiest tales yet are from workers who have recently looked after the abandoned adobe. Three different men tell hair-raising stories of how a dark shadow haunts them and follows them home. A couple of years ago several men from Ghost Hunters dared to set up their equipment inside the adobe at night. They each experienced a feeling of being “hypnotized” while inside. Each of them recanted night terrors and nightmares when they returned to their homes–a creepy souvenir from their visit in Monterey County.

Getting Ready for Giving Birth

A

rguably one of the most lifechanging and amazing experiences in one’s lifetime will be bringing a child into this world. Having experienced giving birth once and now pregnant with my second, I can’t imagine enduring labor, whether natural, medicated, or cesarean, without some birth training. Every pregnancy and birth are different, but preparation is key. Caitlin Hutcheon, President of the Birth Network of Monterey, believes, “The most important thing that new parents can do is get a prenatal education whether it’s from their doula or a child birth educator. They can expect to learn about the phases of labor, comfort, pain relief, and relaxation techniques, they will explain medical interventions, what our local resources are, and tips on postpartum and baby care.

Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula Breastfeeding Success-Learn how to get breastfeeding off to a good start for you and your baby in this class. Beyond the Baby Registry

17 Great Gifts to Give New Moms Baby registries are a wonderful tool for helping new parents stock their nursery with the essentials every growing family needs. But while registries include important items like car seats, they tend to overlook gifts that can help a new mom relax, celebrate and adjust to her new role in life. Next time you are shopping for a new or expectant mom, consider going off the registry and purchasing one of these thoughtful gifts instead.

1.

A Maternity Photo Session. Maternity photos are a wonderful way for an expectant mom to commemorate her pregnancy. If you think she may be interested in documenting the actual birth of her baby, you could even hire a birth photographer to take photos during delivery.

2.

A Newborn Photo Session. New moms love to have lots of pictures taken, but the cost of newborn photos can add up quickly. A session with a professional photographer is a gift she will remember forever, especially if you spring for

16

a couple of the prints.

3.

A Maternity Massage. Pamper her with the gift of a massage to relax her tired muscles and soothe her aches. Be sure to find a skilled practitioner who is knowledgeable about the do’s and don’ts of massage during pregnancy.

4.

A Pre-delivery Pedicure. Few moms can reach their toes during those final months of pregnancy, so why not give her a gift certificate to get her nails prepped and polished before delivery? Better yet, schedule the appointment and go with her for a girls’ day out.

5.

Prenatal (or Postnatal) Yoga Classes. Studies suggest that yoga can improve sleep, decrease anxiety, and help mothers prepare for and recover from labor and delivery. Since many yoga studios and community centers offer drop-in classes, it’s easy to buy a punch card she can use whenever she likes.

6.

A Magazine Subscription. With so many parenting mag-

azines available in both print and digital format, it won’t be hard to find one she will appreciate. Give the gift of a year-long subscription as a resource to help her through that first year of motherhood.

7.

A Bubble Bath Basket. Fill a basket with an assortment of luxurious bath salts and bubble bath so she can soak away her stress. Include some cocoa butter massage cream, which can minimize stretch marks, for her to apply after the bath.

8.

A Breastfeeding Basket. If you know she’s planning to breastfeed, fill a basket with items to make her experience easier. Nursing pads, purified lanolin nipple ointment, a comfy nursing tank top and a copy of the book Breastfeeding Made Simple by Nancy Mohrbacher are all good places to start.

9.

A Coffee Shop Gift Card. New moms are notoriously sleepdeprived, and caffeine is a perfect antidote to all those sleepless nights. If she isn’t a coffee drinker,

opt for a selection of her favorite herbal teas instead.

10.

A Cleaning Service. Even if you can only afford a month or two, any new mom will appreciate having somebody else take responsibility for the dusting and vacuuming while she recuperates and bonds with baby.

11.

A Service Coupon Book. What do new moms need most in those first few weeks after giving birth? Help. Create a coupon book filled with coupons she can redeem for services like grocery shopping, running errands, doing laundry, and holding the baby while she showers.

12.

A Postpartum Doula. The word doula literally means “woman’s servant.” While some doulas serve women during labor, a postpartum doula focuses on a mother’s physical and emotional needs after delivery. As any experienced mom knows, postpartum support is one of the best gifts you can receive.

13.

A Meal Train Website. It’s easy – and free – to set up an interactive, online meal calendar at MealTrain.com, but it’s also a perfect gift for a hungry new mom. Invite her friends and family to participate so that after baby’s birth she receives delicious meals delivered right to her doorstep.

14.

A High-Quality Baby Carrier. Baby carriers have gained popularity in recent years, but not all brands are created equal. Give her the gift of a high-quality carrier like a Mei Tai or Stretchy Wrap so she can carry baby handsfree, and feel comfortable and safe while doing so.

15.

A Mom’s Group Membership. Help her get out of the house and meet new friends by investing in a membership with a local mom’s group in her name. Or buy a gift certificate for a Mommy and Me activity – think infant massage, music circles, or a stroller fitness class.

16.

Maternity/Nursing Lingerie. Help the new mom feel beautiful by wrapping up some fashionable (yet comfortable) loungewear or lingerie designed specifically with a new mom in mind.

17.

A Bottle of Bubbly. There’s no drinking during pregnancy, but a bottle of champagne or sparkling cider makes a festive gift once baby arrives. Mom can toast to the birth of her baby and the amazing journey she has just begun. Alyssa Chirco is a freelance journalist and mother of two. Don’t Forget About Dad Mom may get most of the glory – and the gifts – when a new little bundle of joy arrives, but don’t forget about Dad. Here are a few ideas: A Push Pack. Help a nervous dad-to-be support his partner during labor by creating what some refer to as a “push pack.” Include items like high protein snacks, aromatherapy candles, and a book of relaxation techniques to help both parents through the delivery. A Daddy Diaper Bag. Mom shouldn’t be the only one responsible for changing diapers. Look for a more masculine backpack or messenger bag style, or you can even order a diaper bag emblazoned with the logo of his favorite Major League Baseball team online. While you are at it, visit CafePress.com and order a “Real Men Change Diapers” Tshirt for him too. A Book about Being a Dad. If he’s the type that will enjoy a humorous, light-hearted take on fatherhood, try The New Dad’s Survival Guide by Scott Mactavish. For a more serious, look at what dads should expect, give him a copy of The Expectant Father by Armin A. Brott.

Peaceful Sleeping Baby

Gentle Sleep Coaching for ages 4.5 months to 5 years – Do you feel exhausted? – Does your child wake up multiple times a night? – Does your child need you to rock, breatsfeed, pat their back, etc. to fall asleep? – Do you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing works? – Are you ready to get your life back?

The method I use is gentle and effective and tailored to the needs and goals of your family.

12 Ways to Support a New Mom there is no time for resting when the baby rests. It can be very difficult to entertain a toddler while mom is nursing or changing diapers. Offer to take care of the older children or offer to take care of baby so she can spend some alone time with her older children.

4.

S

leepless nights and a change in routine can leave a new mom feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Offering support to a family with a new baby can help them adjust to their new normal. Often when you ask, mom isn’t able to think of the exact way she needs help. Here are some ideas:

1.

Stop by the store. Going to the store with a newborn and possibly older children for the first time can be daunting. Offer to pick up a few things the family needs. Helping to put them away would be an extra bonus.

2.

Help around the house. Sweep the floor, fold laundry, vacuum, or do dishes. A clean house during a time of transition can bring order to a time that feels chaotic. If mom prefers to clean for herself, offer to care for the baby and other children while she works on a household project.

3.

Come when others don’t. Not all new moms are “new moms.” Families that are adding their second, third, or fourth child need help just as much as first time moms, if not more. When there are older children

18

montereybayparent.com

October 2017 MBP.indd 18

Provide a meal. Friends and family often send versatile casseroles like lasagna after the new baby is home. Try thinking outside the 13x9 pan. Why not bring the family the fixings for breakfast and lunch rather than just dinner? Stock the freezer with easy, ready to make items like pizza, pasta dishes, soups, and crock pot meals. Crunched for time or don’t feel like making an extra meal? Bring their favorite take out or send a gift card.

5.

Set up a train. When one meal just doesn’t cover it, set up a meal train using websites like www. signupgenius.com or www.takethemameal.com. Discuss with the family the most convenient dates and times to deliver meals and solicit friends to fill all the open spots.

6.

Let her shower. One of the simplest ways to help a new mom is to hold the baby and watch the other children while she eats lunch, enjoys a relaxing shower, or takes a short nap. When mom is rested, fed, and freshened up, it can really make her feel ready to take on the rest of the day.

7.

Help with the older kids. Show support by offering to pick up the older kids, even if it’s just for a couple hours. If you are taking your own children to the park, swing by and pick up hers for the afternoon. This gets them out of the house and gives mom a break. Time alone with baby may be just what mom needs.

8.

Ask about her birth story. Giving birth is a huge milestone. Ask about her birth story and listen. Becoming a mom is a joyful, stressful, awe inspiring, and life changing experience. Telling the birth story helps women to process and embrace this new journey.

9.

Bring a gift for mom. Many people bring gifts for the baby, but mom is usually the one doing all the work. Bring a snack or treat for mom to enjoy. Other great gifts are ones that pamper mom or make her feel beautiful and comfortable in her postpartum body. Lotion, perfume, a new nightgown, or slippers are some good ideas.

10.

Don’t stay too long. Families who have newborns generally like to have company, especially if they pitch in around the house and with the kids. However, don’t overstay your welcome. Visit the family, bring a meal, and help out but watch for clues from mom as to when the family would like some alone time.

11.

Take her somewhere. Mom may not be able to drive for a few weeks after birth. Offer to take her on errands or just out for coffee. Being able to get out of the house can do wonders for someone’s attitude.

12.

Don’t give advice. An important tip for anyone chatting with a new mom is to listen but don’t give advice unless you are asked. It can be frustrating and overwhelming to get unsolicited advice. Sarah Lyons, mom of six, has learned first hand what it is like to adjust to a new baby in the house. She is so grateful for the family and friends that helped her as each baby came home and loves to return the favor to others.
