Busy, busy Autumn! This sure isn’t the month to complain about nothing to do. There are dozens of Fall Festivals and Halloween events–all in addition to the regular community events like storytimes and classes. Nicole Amaral has spent hours researching to find as many Fallthemed events as she could, and you’ll see six pages of fun events beginning on page 14. For other fall fun, check out our list of pumpkin patches on page 8. There are ten great choices that offer more than just pumpkin picking–many have special activities and events. Be sure to check out their websites for current hours and any special entertainment. Nicole also wrote the “Spooky Santa Cruz” article on pages 12-13. I admit to being a little bit creeped out reading the article. There is some scary stuff going on in Santa Cruz County! If you are a long time reader of Monterey Bay Parent, you’ll remember that Nicole wrote a similar article focusing on Monterey County for last year’s October issue. You’ll find that article on our website. If you’re in the mood for a little haunting this Halloween, both articles will offer enough terrifying fun for even the most courageous. For more fall fun, check out Jasmine Root’s article on Monarch Butterflies on pages 20-21. These beautiful little creatures will be landing in the area very soon. Jasmine offers some basic info on Monarch’s as well as sharing three fun butterfly-themed events that your family will enjoy. We took the Monarch theme and ran with it for our cover shoot in Carmel. Our sweet cover model Zoey had almost as much fun as we did in finding ways to photograph her and our model butterfly. Orchestra in the Schools Celebrates Its 30th Season by Susie O’Donnell

he cultural fabric of the Monterey Peninsula has been enriched over the past thirty years by Orchestra in the Schools (OITS), a unique after-school program instilling the love of performing music in our young people under the direction of its music director, James Paoletti. Focusing on their mission statement, “Inspiring Success For All Children Through Music,” OITS teaches more than music; it offers fun, friendship and cooperation in addition to music skills. Each instrument is taught in small group situations by experts on that instrument. Students then join together to perform musical arrangements simplified for young musicians. Currently, twenty-one Monterey County public, private, and home schools are represented in the program.

Dedicated instructors assure that budding musicians in grades 3-10, from children with no prior musical knowledge to advanced students, learn the rigors of music in small classes. OITS has nurtured more than eighteen hundred young musicians in its program since its inception in 1988. Many continue their music studies and some use achievements launched through OITS for scholarships to continue their education or audition for more advanced groups. Students perform two concerts a year and other cooperative ventures – like playing with the Monterey Pops on Memorial Day in front of Colton Hall. Advanced students may audition for placement in trio or quartet ensembles for additional instruction and performance opportunities.

The OITS program currently has more than one hundred musical instruments available to loan to children who want to be involved, yet may not be able to afford an instrument. Mr. Paoletti, along with the staff, and the Board of Directors work together to bring the program to any child who desires to be involved. The cost of the yearly tuition for 27 weekly 2-hour sessions is currently set at $550. The actual per-student cost is three times that amount. Tuition aid is available for students who qualify. Deep budget cuts and time constraints limit music programs in our local schools. Orchestra in the Schools addresses the resulting need.

Fall is my favorite season of all and each year I start to decorate for fall earlier and earlier. You know it is fall when Costco starts selling Halloween costumes, Starbucks brings back Pumpkin Spice Lattes, football returns and the air feels a little crisper. Plus, there are so many enjoyable activities in the military community! Even if you are not associated with the military, the housing areas of La Mesa and Fort Ord provide a safe and fun atmosphere for trick-or-treating on Halloween, and there is sure to be an abundance of treats for your family. I know I am already planning our costumes for Halloween! On Friday, October 12th, there are two special events at NSA Monterey. At 3:00 pm, Navy Fitness Monterey will host a free Pumpkin Run at 3 pm in front of Hotel Del Monte. Call 831-656-3118 for more information. Immediately following from 4:00-6: 00 pm, NSA Monterey Morale, Welfare and Recreation will have Pumpkin Painting for all ages. If you haven’t explored the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, NSA Monterey MWR has an opportunity for you on October 13th. The cost is $55 and includes transportation to one of America’s most legendary haunted mansions and a candlelight tour. Due to the nature of this event, children must be 13 and up. On October 20th, the Presidio of Monterey will host the 6th Annual Honor Our Fallen Run at Fort Ord Dunes State Park in Marina. The event offers a 5K and 10K route that you can walk or run. Strollers are permitted. I ran this event last year with my family, and it was a joy to run in honor of those who sacrificed everything and also to meet Gold Star families that these heroes have left behind. The opening ceremony will kick off at 8:30 am, and tickets are available at www.active. com. Be sure to select the military ticket option. The first 1,500 registered participants will receive a t-shirt, a commemorative dog tag finisher’s medal, and bag. You won’t want to miss “Freaky Family Friday,” a Children’s Halloween Party in the Barbara McNitt Ballroom at Hotel Del Monte on Friday, October 26. The event will feature a carnival, games, tricks, treats, and fun for the whole family. Registration is required at Tickets and Travel. $10 for adults and $7 for children age (4-11). Navigating The Holidays

or me, this Halloween will include one Ninja and three pink, polka-dot Minnie Mouses! Halloween marks the beginning of holiday fun with family. As grandparents, I imagine there are unique holiday traditions you are looking forward to. Perhaps it is Trick or Treating? Planning and preparing the turkey dinner on Thanksgiving? Or perhaps you look forward to “passing the torch” and merely showing up for Christmas dinner with your famous green bean casserole in tow. One of the joys of being a grandparent is watching our children plan and prepare for the holidays. They may replicate traditions from their childhood or they may create new ones. For some of us, it may be hard to let go of those treasured family traditions. Others are eager to see new traditions begin. One thing most of us agree on is that we are happiest

when we see our grandkids enjoy the holiday! A poll conducted by Grandparents.com asked: Will you see your grandchildren over the holidays? • 49% responded yes, the kids will come to us and the other grandparents separately. • 34% said, no, they’re spending the holidays with the other grandparents • And 17% said both sides of the family will celebrate together. There may be a lot of juggling, logistical and emotional, as families decide where and with whom to celebrate holidays. Remember that at any family event, tensions can run high. Please do not complain or compete with other family members and never criticize the “other” grandparent(s). If you don’t get to spend time with your kids/grands for a holiday, don’t hold a grudge the next time you do see them. If you are not able to enjoy holidays with your grands, don’t be shy about creating something to share. Email, face time or good old snail mail

Santa Cruz Full of fun activities such as the Beach Boardwalk and Roaring Camp, Santa Cruz County also has no shortage of spooky and mysterious spots to explore.

anta Cruz’s “spooky” history can be found both on the screen and in the news. The city, renamed “Santa Carla” was portrayed as a nest for vampires in the cult classic, “The Lost Boys.” In the early seventies, when Santa Cruz was terrorized by two serial killers and one mass murderer, the once-sleepy beach town was dubbed the “murder capital of the world.” In honor of Halloween, here are my top five super-scary Santa Cruz spots.

Rispin Mansion 2200 Wharf Rd, Capitola This 92-year-old mansion has 22 bedrooms and has remained vacant for over half of its existence. The legendary curse begins with Henry Allen Rispin, a wealthy man from San Francisco, who bought the mansion with the intent of turning it into a resort. Instead of opening up what would have been known as “Capitola by the Sea,” he endured misfortune that resulted in the death of his only son, a divorce, and complete financial ruin. Nuns occupied the mansion in the 40’s and 50’s until they moved to a more inland location. It remained vacant for over 40 years, owned by the city of Capitola. In 1998, builders had hoped to invest in a multi-million dollar venture to transform it into a

bed & breakfast. It took over a decade to get the plans approved by the city. A few days before they were to start the project, an unexplainable fire gutted the mansion. The city ultimately boarded up the empty structure. In 2012, Santa Cruz Ghost Hunter Team investigated the mansion. A psychic/medium felt there were both good and bad energies and that the mansion was more of a vortex for the other side. The spirit of a nun seemed to protect the mansion from a source of evil. One Ghost Hunter Team member experienced a feeling that her hair was being pulled and touched. One investigator was “pushed” and almost fell down a flight of stairs. At 3 am the team prepared to leave the mansion, and the lights kept going on and off. Then as they were walking out, a team member noticed a distinct bootprint of the back of the pants of the investigator who had almost fallen down the stairs. Another team visited the mansion on a Sunday and had an opposite experience; there was a warm and almost spiritual ambiance.

Sunshine Villa (Hotel McCray) 80 Front St, Santa Cruz The Sunshine Villa, previously the old McCray Hotel, possesses plenty of history within its walls. Before the classic Victorian was built on the property in the 1860s and became a hotel in

1879, the Ohlone Indians performed sacred rituals there and the location as burial grounds. The Hotel was also the “California Gothic” inspiration behind Alfred Hitchcock’s Bates Motel in the 1960 thriller, Psycho. The property was abandoned for nearly a decade. Police reports state that while the building was condemned, it was occupied by drug dealers, homeless people, and cultists. The cultists are said to have held satanic rituals throughout the building. Notorious serial killer Herbert Mullin resided there in the late 1970s, during the peak of his killing spree. Former employees of the Hotel McCray claim to have been touched by an unseen force. Another resident claimed that while living at the hotel, he would see a blue mist materialize in one of the rooms. Windows and doors are said to open and close on their own. Housekeepers and other staff members have reported, “Cold rooms, mysterious blue lights, and the voice of women calling from the shadows,” according to a Metro Santa Cruz article. In the 1980’s, the property was remodeled into an assisted living residence. Workers witnessed many unexplainable events, such as a light turning on and off on its own in an unoccupied room, as well as the feeling of being touched.

Santa Cruz Mission (Holy Cross Church) 130 Emmett St, Santa Cruz Built in 1791, the current Holy Cross Church was built on the location of the original mission church in 1889, and it remains an active parish of the Diocese of Monterey. The Santa Cruz Mission holds the legend of Padre Andrés Quintana. The Father was known to beat the Ohlone Indians with an iron whip while they were working at the mission. One dark, stormy night on October 12, 1812, Father Quintana was ambushed by several members of the tribe. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Andrés Quintana, as well as a few Native Americans, are buried underneath the Holy Cross Church located across from the Mission. In 2012, The Santa Cruz Ghost Hunters visited the mission and recorded an EVP of some tribal drumming. Then on the 200-year anniversary of Father Quintana’s death, they visited and this time felt that Quintana’s strong presence did not want them there. After walking to the side of the mission, they saw a ghost of a middle-aged woman in a white gown walking across the street and then disappear before reaching the other side of the road. Many believe the priests’ spirit still curses and roams the area, known as “Haunted Hill,” trying to inflict pain and poverty on anyone he can. Witnesses claim his ghost has been seen dressed in a brown robe and sandals standing at the altar inside the mission. His ghost and the spirits of others have been reported to wander through the park just across the street at night.

Mt. Madonna Inn 1285 Hecker Pass Rd, Watsonville The Mt. Madonna Inn, a former hot spot for dining, dancing, and drinking is located between the cities of Watsonville and Gilroy. The inn spreads out over 14,000 square feet, but its doors have remained chained and locked for nearly two decades. The Ohlone tribe once called the hills of Mt. Madonna their home. Sickness eventually riddled the land, and hundreds of Ohlone people died, and their bodies were burned or buried on the rolling hills. In the early 19th century, Henry Miller, “the cattle king” and one of Gilroy’s founding fathers, bought up hundreds of acres in the hills of Mt. Madonna and began plans to build a mountain estate located at what is now Mt. Madonna County Park. Even though considerably wealthy, Miller succumbed to much tragedy. His youngest child, 8-year-old Sarah was thrown from her horse and crushed to death. Many people claim to have seen the apparition of young Sarah in a white dress roaming the County Park and walking the road towards the Inn. In addition to park rangers having heard a young woman scream from inside the building, lights have been seen to turn on and off when it is known that no one is inside. After the Miller’s mansion burned in a mysterious fire, the property was sold a couple more times, and both times the buildings burned down due to more fires. In 1943, the Mt. Madonna Inn was constructed. A horse stable on the property remains to this day, and people claim to hear the phantom charging of horse hooves.

Between 1930 and present day, the hills of Mt. Madonna surrounding the Inn became a dumping ground for murderers and a popular suicide spot. Dozens of victims were found, including many who succumbed to horrific car accidents on the treacherous roadways of Hecker Pass.

The Plunge at The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk 400 Beach Street, Santa Cruz The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has had a couple of deaths in the past, including on the Giant Dipper roller coaster, but the stories of “The Plunge” instantly caught my eye. The building which now houses the miniature golf course known as Neptune’s Kingdom was once used as a heated, indoor saltwater swimming pool known as The Plunge. At least five drownings took place within the structure. They were all men, and four were just teenagers. The first drowning took place in 1935 and the final deaths happened together in 1959 when a 15 and 16-year-old both from Castroville drowned in the deep end. The building is said to be haunted by the drowning victims. A staff member claimed to have ghostly encounters while working in the restaurant. He felt that he was being watched and then cooking utensils started flying off of the shelves, nearly hitting him! Past employees have had unexplained encounters on occasion, such as seeing bright white translucent faces flash in the video monitors in the miniature golf course. Others have claimed to see dark, sinister shadows form and glide as if swimming throughout the course.

will never forget the first time my son noticed a butterfly, his eyes lit up as he watched it flutter through our front yard. Landing on the lawn, then the fence, and finally on his swing. He laughed and clapped while tottering over to it, arms outstretched like he was trying to grasp the wind. “Budderfly, Mama, budderfly,” he screeched. Butterflies create a sense of wonder and excitement from the very young to the young at heart. As Californians, and particularly as residents of Monterey Bay, we are incredibly lucky to be able to witness a phenomenon year after year, the return of the grand monarch butterfly. Monarch Migration Monarch butterflies spend their winter months (mid-October to February) in the mild climate of the California Coast. Their migration is one amazing feat in itself. Where to Find Monarchs Monarch butterflies can be viewed at various sanctuaries throughout California, including Pacific Grove (Butterfly Town, USA) and Santa Cruz. ary at 250 Ridge Rd. Pacific Grove, CA 93950 and parking is free on Ridge Rd. The sanctuary is open from sunrise to sunset with volunteer docents available from 12-3. In Santa Cruz, you can see the butterflies at Natural Bridges State Beach which offers a boardwalk and large viewing area to observe the monarchs. Guided tours are available Saturdays and Sundays from 11-2 mid-October through December. Natural Bridges State Beach is open 8 am to Sunset with the visitor center open 10-4. There is a $10 per vehicle parking fee, but all other activities are free. When to see Monarchs The butterflies start to turn up in October and have been known to stay until February. However, the optimal time to look at the butterflies is midOctober to December. To see the butterflies at their most active time

go between noon and 3 pm when the butterflies are warm and fluttering around. Monarchs can’t fly when the weather is under 55° or if it’s overcast. When monarchs are clustered up in the trees when it’s cold or cloudy, it may be difficult to see as they look like dead leaves or branches. Another great way to see monarchs is in your backyard! Unfortunately, butterfly populations have decreased in recent years due to habit loss, extreme weather, and herbicide spraying. By planting milkweed in your yard, you can create your butterfly garden where you can watch them anytime. Milkweed comes in 25 different varieties, so visit your local nursery to find which variety would be best for your garden to welcome back our visitors year after year.
