Bringing art, dance, music, and theatre into our family’s daily routine makes everything so much richer. But don’t stop with the traditional creative arts, encourage your children to be creative in other ways whether through daydreaming, writing, cooking, sewing, crafts or any number of ways. It helps to think outside of the box and find creativity all around you. It’s also a great environment to cultivate for our children. How many times have you heard someone say “I can’t draw a straight line,” or “I am tone deaf?” Too many people feel that if they don’t have traditional musical or artistic skills, they aren’t creative. The fact is, we all have creativity within us. Cooking a beautifully presented, delicious dinner or solving a complex mathematics problem? That’s being creative! Negotiating a business solution that allows all the parties to feel fairly treated? Yep, creativity at its finest. Creating an environment where your child can freely access their creativity is one of the most lasting gifts you can give a child. A child who can escape into a book or create a miniature world with scraps from the recycling bin is developing skills that will last a lifetime. They are learning to use their brains in a way that will be useful in every area of their life. This issue is all about the arts and creativity. We’ve gathered articles on everything from fostering creativity in your kids to suggestions on where to enjoy the arts locally. It was a fun issue to plan and pull together, and our writers did a great job. I hope you enjoy reading the articles as much as I did! Once you finished this issue, check out our website at MontereyBayParent.com where you’ll find an updated “Arts Directory.” You’ll find information on local businesses and organizations that offer art, dance, music, and theatre for kids and adults.

Check out the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department for Information, Tickets & Tours!

O

ne of my favorite parts of living here in Monterey is the proximity to so many world-class attractions. From the Monterey Bay Aquarium here in our backyard to San Francisco just a few hours away, there is never a shortage of things to do. I’ve also been making a real effort to get out and explore with my little guy in tow, even knowing that our pace may be slower than I’m used to sometimes. But all of that sightseeing can get to be a strain on the family budget. How do you decide where to start? Enter the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department! A quick visit to the Information, Tickets, and Tours (ITT) Office at the Naval Postgraduate School or the Outdoor Recreation Office at the Presidio of Monterey is a great place to begin your exploration. It’s a benefit for military families that I’ve always heard about but didn’t take advantage of until I became a mom. I recommend starting with the discount ticket price list. In addition to great deals to many attractions, there are also periodic specials that reduce admissions even further. I was thrilled to find Disneyland tickets at a third of the price of the regular admission, as well as deals on hotels near the park. We knew when we moved here that we wanted to make the trip, but the cost of a week at Disney can easily use up a family’s available vacation funds. Since we had a lengthy list

of attractions we wanted to check off our bucket list during our time in California, getting a good deal was crucial. We have our first trip to the Happiest Place on Earth planned for September with the help of the ITT office. Discount tickets are available for local attractions on the Peninsula, in Northern California, and in Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego. After checking out the ticket list, take a look at the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) calendars. MWR hosts events all around the peninsula and beyond. Are you looking for a fun, free event for the family? Get out the jogging stroller and enter the 9/11 Tribute 5K run. Interested in something a little further away from home? Enjoy a visit to the Hearst Castle on Septem-

ber 23rd. From an Oakland A’s game on September 9th to a trip to Yosemite on September 15th, there is something for everyone. Transportation is often included, making it that much easier to see the sights. MWR publishes new calendars monthly with local activities, group classes, and sponsored trips, all at a great price. Participating in an MWR sponsored event can be a great way to explore new areas and experience new things as a family without breaking the bank or losing your sanity arranging logistics.

To contact, email tickets@nps. edu for the Naval Postgraduate School or call (831)242-5506 for the Presidio of Monterey. Katie Begley is a Navy veteran and military spouse. Katie is the advertising sales executive for the Salinas region for Monterey Bay Parent Magazine. She is the mother of an 9-month old son.

P

arents, do you ever wonder if you may be taking the whole overscheduling taboo too seriously? For years, parents have been hearing that kids have too many activities, too much homework, too-heavy backpacks, too much screen time, too much sugar...and on and on. Personally, I find most parents are intelligent, conscientious, and trying to find a healthy middle ground for everyone in the family. Most parents want their kids to have just the right amount of after school activities. The vast majority seem committed to helping their kids become happier, healthier, more well rounded citizens without pushing them into activity overload. So why not remember a few things kids stand to gain from after school activities instead? Kids can benefit artistically, physically, socially, mentally and

By

personally from after school activities. I contacted a half-dozen after school activity pros, and here are some of the many benefits for kids that we discussed: Fit, Confident Kids As Elle Woods reminds us in the film Legally Blonde, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” But motivating kids to get off the couch is not always easy for parents. Your kids are not typically looking to you to motivate them to run some wind-sprints or do a series of gut crunches. They need someone else to step in and motivate them to get moving. This is where after school activities come in, preferably with dedicated, motivating coaches and instructors leading the way. Physical activities increase coordination, inspire discipline, and provide energy

outlets for restless kids. So let another trusted adult be in charge for a change, and enjoy your down time while your kids get more fit. Lights Who Shine As much as we would like our kids to carry on our values and ideals, it’s really up to them to communicate to us who they are and what they believe. And while we may like to think that our children are born whole and complete, the truth is kids often discover what they are made of after they become immersed in activities that stretch and challenge them. Engaging kids in activities where they feel fully immersed in the experience and are responsible for their own mastery helps kids discover what makes them tick. When it comes to finding an activity for your child, look for outlets that challenge them while

providing gradual instruction and skill development. Part Of Something Greater After school activities offer kids outlets for expressing their energy within a safe learning context. Feeling part of a group with a purpose is a beautiful thing, so make sure that the space where your child spends time is a safe, fun, and growth-centric. Often kids become as attached to a center, a studio, or a routine as much as they do to a group of peers. When kids go off to their activities, they should feel like they are going to one of their favorite places - to their home away from home. If this is not the case for your child, then you might want to check out other possibilities. Memorably Connected If there is one thing all after school activity professionals agree on, it’s the importance of making memories via meaningful connections. Engaged, smiling, busy children are typically happy children. Whether your child’s activity happens in a place rife with variety or in a more specialized space, your child

is sure to grow over time, make memories, and understand herself better with regular participation in after school activities. Why not let your kids have the continuity of years of ongoing participation. It’s hard to advance up the activity ranks if you dabble in one activity and then another. Give your child a few years in elementary school to try different activities. Then see if they want to commit to an activity or two during middle school. They can always switch to different activities once they get to high school, if they wish. Aptitude-rich Some students need extra help to keep up academically, so don’t panic if your child turns out to be one of them. Your child may need extra help that addresses specific needs like standardized test preparation or responding to learning gaps. Other kids simply need help becoming more satisfied students. Tutoring can definitely increase not just aptitude but also enthusiasm. And just as parents don’t always make the best coaches, we also don’t always make the best tutors, either. Besides,

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • september 2017

kids often progress faster and more willingly when they work with mentors they don’t already know. And good news, raising academic confidence by teaching learning skills in one subject that can pay off in increased academic confidence across the board. So if your child is struggling with critical reading, vocabulary or math skills, why not try a tutoring service? Your child has nothing to lose and much to gain. Kids need to feel successful today to become successful tomorrow, and activities can help them experience positive growth gradually. If you don’t channel your child’s energy, video games, TV watching, and other sedentary activities will always be a temptation. If you want engaged, involved, smiling kids, find them some activities they enjoy. You will be so glad you did. Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz is grateful for the opportunities she had contributing to school journals and newspapers. She also worked off some of her teenage angst on the soccer field, on the softball diamond, and in the school pool.

Raising Creative Kids I

n our increasingly structured and media-saturated society, kids often don’t have the time or space to be creative. Many of us think of creativity as only pertaining to the arts. But, according to James D Moran III in his article “Creativity in Young Children,” creativity is also defined as a form of problem solving, requiring flexibility of thought. Creative thinking can help in every area of life from education to personal relationships.

Even if you as a parent feel lost on the subjects of art or theater, you can still encourage your kids to explore their creative side. Here are a few ideas: Go old school: Toys such as building blocks, play food, kitchens and dolls push kids to invent their own games. Dress up -- It’s not just for girls: Create your own costume box. Collect old jewelry, hats, scarves and shoes. Garage sales and thrift stores are great sources for used Halloween costumes or old prom and wedding dresses. Plastic fire fighter or construction hats, super hero capes and costumes are fun. Give your child Dad’s old army jacket or fill a tool belt with plastic tools. Tip: Shopping for costumes on the day after Halloween can help you to add to your stash when prices are ridiculously low. Craft supply: Keep a box or bin stocked with art supplies 8

including colored paper, glue sticks, crayons and markers, safety scissors, punches, stamps and stickers. If the supplies are there, kids will use them! Recyclables make great crafting supplies as well. Build a city with cereal boxes and margarine tubs or make telescopes from paper towel tubes. Giving kids an object to repurpose stimulates creative thinking. Music: Expose kids to different forms of music by playing music in your home. Little ones can make their own “instruments.” For example: coffee can drum, margarine tub with a few dried beans inside and the lid taped shut as a shaker. Writing: For older elementary children try a round robin story. Choose a line from a book and copy it into a notebook. Pass the notebook and pen around the family as each person adds one line. Then read out loud, the results are often hilarious. This can also be done by writing the first line in a notebook, then leaving the notepad on the table. When family members pass by throughout the day, they each add a line. The story can then be read

aloud at the dinner table. For younger children, reading poetry aloud is a great way to introduce language, rhyming and rhythm. Shel Silverstein’s humorous poetry is a great jumping off point. Puppets: Make puppets out of old socks or brown lunch sacks. Encourage children to act out a favorite story. Family field trips: Instead of going to the movie or mall, try taking in a show at the local children’s theater or visiting a museum or science center. For older kids, give the ballet or a musical a try. Hands on: Children love to get their hands dirty. Play-dough, clay and finger painting are great creative outlets. For the parents: Remember that there are no mistakes in art. Engage in open discussion about your child’s masterpiece, asking them to tell you about their creation. Refrain from criticism, or trying to tell them the “right” way to draw or paint. If a child is afraid to make mistakes, they will be less likely to explore and try new things.

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • september 2017

About that mess… It’s hard to clean the kitchen or dining room only to have your five-year-old dump out a bag of cotton balls or beads onto the floor. But if children are worried about making a mess, they will be inhibited and less creative. One solution is to keep a couple of oversized T-shirts or old long-sleeved shirts to put on over kid’s clothes. To protect surfaces, plastic, disposable tablecloths usually used for birthday parties make great waterproof table coverings. Those really messy projects can be done outside or in the garage. For virtually no mess, washable markers, paints and crayons are widely available. And for those days when company is expected for dinner, that would be the time to do coloring or dress-up instead of finger painting. Last but not least: get in there and draw, paint or act with the kids. Not only will you make memories with your child, but you might just discover your own artist within! Tiffany Doerr Guerzon is the mother of three creative and very messy children. Read more of her writing at www.TDGuerzon.com

n early introduction to music does more than entertain. Music may be fun to add to your child’s daily routine by kick-starting learning, serving as an important cue in a child’s routine, and offering lifelong benefits. If you’re asking ”what music classes are available for my child?” the answer is that there are many in Monterey and Santa Cruz for each early age group and level.

years, and an accompanying parent or caregiver will enjoy singing, moving, listening, and playing simple instruments while exploring musical concepts through motion in a social and creative environment. Ways to introduce music to your toddler 1. Between the ages of 1 and 3, kids respond best to music when they actively experience it. Listening to music passively like in the car is fine, but it is best to make opportunities to get your child swaying, marching, clapping, and moving to the beat. 2. Share songs that go along with simple hand motions or dance moves, like The “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” “Head and Shoulders”, “If You’re Happy and You know It (Clap Your Hands), “The Wheels on the Bus,” or the “Hokey Pokey.” For younger kids, a parent’s lap is a great place to put music and movement together. Have your child face you and be sure to smile as you bounce your knees to chants like “This is the Way the Ladies Ride” or “Open Shut Them.”

Use music to help your child make transitions through the day such as when: • Picking up toys (“clean up, clean up…everybody everywhere” or “bye bye instruments…”) • Brushing teeth (“brushing, brushing, brushing teeth,” sung to the tune of “London Bridge Is Falling Down”) • Taking a bath (“Now it’s bath time, now it’s bath time, yes, it is” sung to the tune of “Are You Sleeping”) Kids’ music can be a bit cheesy and parents may tire of it quickly but there’s no reason why you can’t share your own favorite music with your kids. A toddler who loves Beethoven, The Bee-Gees or Bob Marley? Why not? When you try new music, ask if your child likes it and discuss your opinion as well. Though most antsy toddlers aren’t usually ready for a night at the symphony, there are live performances suitable for kids. Museums, libraries, and local colleges often host child-friendly events. The Monterey Symphony offers free youth concerts at Sunset Center, the next one is October 16. Outdoor concerts such as The Monterey County Fair (Aug 31-Sept 4), Festa Italia (Sept 8-10) or the Rods on the Wharf (October 28) where kids can run around, sing, dance etc. are also a good bet. My favorite venue is coming up this month, The Monterey Jazz Festival. Sunday, September the 17th is Family Day filled with fun activities such as Percussion Play shop, Instrument Petting Zoo and plenty of jazzy performances all day long! 5 Ways to Find the Fun in Your Child’s Music Practice

W

ho knew practicing an instrument could be funand-games? In many homes it involves shouting, grumbling and even tears, but it doesn’t have to be. You can break out of a routine of arguing over music practice by playing instead. Playing games that is. Children cannot see the longterm benefits of practicing; they rely on their parents support and encouragement to get them through the rough spots. But what if you are just as frustrated as your child and each practice session turns into a power struggle? At your child’s next practice, sound a positive note by trying the following activities. Get moving, get the wiggles out, and get the song imbedded in your child’s brain: Listen to recordings of the songs your child is learning. Music-listening is a foundation of the Suzuki method, but is also used widely by professional musicians who listen to several versions of a piece they are preparing. Listen to the songs, march to the beat or dance with the rhythm, then sing the tune before playing. If there is a tough section in the music, sing it to your child and have him sing it back to you. Keep singing it, and having him sing it back until he

16

gets it right. Singing the notes and rhythm correctly is a magic trick for improving your child’s playing. Shift focus on your own terms: Young children will find anything to focus on other than their music, so get creative and provide yours with a controlled distraction. Keep a box of colored pencils and a special coloring book in the practice area. Each time your child finishes a musical task, ask him to color a small, specific portion of a picture in the book, such as a character’s shirt or the dog’s tail. Have him play another section of music or the next song, then color another part of the picture. This will get him moving and provide a break from focusing. Why colored pencils? There are usually twelve or fewer in a box, and you don’t want your child to spend the whole time choosing a color. Set up a no-risk audience: Invite all of the dolls and stuffed animals in your house to a special performance by their favorite musician. Your child can line the toys up on the couch while you get out the instrument. Announce the performer with a flourish and have her enter and bow before she begins her practice for the day. When she feels confident with her latest piece, have her perform for the whole family.

A little reward goes a long way: As long as candy is not a daily treat at your house, the lure of twenty M&M’s or jelly beans in a dish can be a big thrill. Start with all twenty or so in the bowl. If your mini-Mozart gets off-task, talks back, or tries to sabotage his practice in some other way, you get to eat one of the treats. Every time. Keep eating them slowly until he settles down. Works like a charm because he gets to eat the ones that are left – if any – at the end of practice. Best of all, you won’t resort to yelling and cajoling. Repetition reaps rewards: When your young musician is struggling, help her identify a trouble spot, then play “wipe-out!” Place three beads, buttons or small toys on the music stand and have her repeat the troublesome measure or line a minimum of three times. Let her slide one bead from one side of the stand to the other each time she plays it correctly. If she plays it wrong, even the last time - Wipeout! She has to put all the beads back and start over until she can play it correctly three times in a row. Start with three beads for younger children. Some teachers recommend practicing specific measures up to fifteen times in a row. Start your child’s music practice with one of these activities, or hold them in reserve for when frustrations are running high. Spread them out and use them sparingly for best results. Whatever games you try, stop practice when your child is having fun and things are going smoothly. Ending at a peaceful moment when your child feels successful creates positive feelings which will carry over into the next day’s practice. Heather Lee Leap is a freelance writer. She and her husband live with three daughters, a piano, a flute, a coronet, a mandolin, several recorders and two violins.
