A NOTE TO THE PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE SPRING CLASS OF 2018 . . . Commencement ceremonies are milestones in the life of a university and in the lives of its extended family members. While in the narrowest sense each graduate is celebrating the mastery of a defined curriculum of intellectual skills and content, we know that the meaning of this commencement celebration will be much broader and deeper than that. Lifelong friendships have been made. Priceless memories will be cherished. New opportunities are within grasp, some of which seemed like mere fantasies just a few short years ago. Excitement is in the air! For those of us who serve as faculty, staff, alumni, trustees or friends of the University of Montevallo, these commencement ceremonies are a reminder that it is a good thing to include time in our busy schedules to celebrate important achievements and to reflect upon the challenges of tomorrow. Perhaps the greatest gift of a liberal arts education is its power to guide us to wiser decisions during and after those moments of reflection. On behalf of all of us who comprise the Montevallo “family,” it is my pleasure to welcome you to Alabama’s public liberal arts university.

Character Actor Michael O’Neill Commencement speaker, May 5, 2018 Montgomery native Michael O’Neill earned a degree in economics from Auburn University in 1974. While in college, O’Neill received a call from Will Geer, veteran character actor who was then starring on “The Waltons.” Geer encouraged him to try acting before working in a corporate environment. After graduating, he did just that, moving to Topanga Canyon, California, to study acting under Geer and his daughter, Ellen Geer, at the family’s famed Theatricum Botanicum. After several years learning his craft, he moved to New York to further his studies with Bill Esper, Larry Moss and David Craig. During this time, he appeared in multiple off-Broadway shows. O’Neill then returned west to Los Angeles where for three decades he’s appeared in dozens of films, including “Seabiscuit,” “Transformers,” “Secondhand Lions,” “Traffic” and “Dallas Buyers Club.” On the small screen, O’Neill is probably best known for his six seasons as Ron Butterfield, the Secret Service agent tasked with protecting President Josiah Bartlet on “The West Wing” or as the broken murderous Gary Clark in “Grey’s Anatomy.” He was also a series regular on “Extant” with Halle Berry and played Sen. Roland Foulkes on all four seasons of “Rectify.” His other TV credits include “The Unit,” “NCIS,” “Bates Motel,” “ER,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Leverage,” “Criminal Minds,” “Cold Case,” “The Mentalist,” “24” and Hulu’s “11.22.63,” with James Franco. Most recently, O’Neill has appeared on “Scandal,” “S.W.A.T,” “The Romanoffs” and “The Resident.” O’Neill has also served as a board member of the Hollywood branch of the Screen Actors Guild and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He currently splits his time between Los Angeles and Birmingham with his wife Mary and three daughters, Ella, Annie and Molly.

Dr. Milly Slater Barranger ’58 Recipient, Doctor of Humnae Letters, honoris causa presented at Commencement, May 5, 2018 The University of Montevallo is proud to present alumna Dr. Milly Slater Barranger ’58 with an honorary doctorate degree for her achievements. Barranger, an author, educator and producer in New York City, writes books about women and the modern American theater. A Birmingham native, Barranger studied at the University of Montevallo to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and secondary education. She also minored in French. During her time at Montevallo, Barranger served as president of student senate, Gold Side cabinet member, president of the English club, president of the college theatre organization and writer for The Alabamian. She was also recognized with such honors as Senior Elite, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and several honor societies. After graduating from Montevallo in 1958, Barranger went on to earn a master’s degree and doctorate degree from Tulane University. In 1971, she was named chair of the Department of Theater at Tulane, which she led for nearly a decade. She married G.K. Barranger, and has one daughter, Heather Dalton Barranger Case. Barranger went on to work as professor and chair of dramatic art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC, she was also the illustrious leader of the resident theater company PlayMakers, which is still in operation. During this time, she also became scholar-in-residence at the Yale School of Drama. From 1980 to 2015, she wrote eight editions of “Theatre: A Way of Seeing” along with other textbooks. She has documented the lives of the great women of theater, including Jessica Tandy, Margaret Webster, legendary Broadway producer Cheryl Crawford and theater agent Audrey Wood. Additionally, Barranger has served as co-editor and contributor to numerous theater publications and editor of “The Selected Letters of Stella Adler.” Barranger was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of “Who’s Who in America,” including “Who’s Who of American Women” and “Who’s Who in Entertainment.” In 2017, she was named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who for her accomplishments and prominence as a theater professional. Also in 2017, she was selected to serve a three-year term on the Tony Awards Nominating Committee.
