“Collide of the Sides: Royal and Loyal”

Welcome to Our Tradition

ood evening and welcome to the celebration of the 102nd anniversary of College Night! This year’s production may appear slightly different from years past, but I can assure you that the spirit and energy are still present! Our students have worked tirelessly and safely to ensure ensure our Homecoming tradition is never forgotten. In the past 100 years of College Night sides, never before have the two sides come together as one to create something unique. In a time of hardship and uncertainty, students sought to look past competing sides and unite to lift each other up. These actions speak true to the testament of the Montevallo community — “You Belong.” Whether you are an alum, student, professor or casual viewer, whether you are on campus or on the other side of the world, tonight we come together to celebrate this cherished tradition. On behalf of the student body, I would like to thank you all for your participation in tonight’s event and supporting the hard work our students have put into this tradition. To both Purples and Golds, your resilience and diligence have made this College Night a night to remember, and your unifying message will be heard for generations to come. I wish you all the best of luck, so break a leg and to the audience wherever you are, be safe, and I hope you enjoy the show!

How Can You Describe It?

hrough a kind of amazing “courtship” process between the sides, incoming students (or often times other late-blooming upperclassman) eventually pick which side they will be on. The competition encompasses a wide variety of aspects and events, including sports, business management (each side has a budget), cheerleading, acting, directing, visual arts of all varieties and, ultimately, leadership responsibility. College Night, then, in reality, is a microcosm of the college experience itself. Whatever your interests or talents, College Night has something for you. Because you see, no matter how much we are “rival” teams, fighting tooth and nail for that win on Saturday night, we are all still ultimately a part of the same process. I remember a constant refrain from people who didn’t participate in College Night was that “It turns the campus against each other.” Sure, maybe for the undergraduates who will have some fleeting rivalries against each other for a couple of years. However, what is the point of Homecoming? Homecoming is not ultimately aimed at undergraduates; it’s aimed at alumni, those who have traveled to live and work far and wide, but who want and feel the need to “come home.” When I look and talk to my fellow alumni who come back, I am talking to alumni on both sides of the split. Some of the people I look forward to seeing most each February are “Vintage Purples,” even some who directly tried their hardest to beat me while I was an active Gold. Why? Because we have a shared experience. While the details may vary, the story is the same — you worked, you laughed, you cried and you loved. We are not just Golds. We are not just Purples. We are College Night. We are Montevallo. – Andrew Heaton ’04 2

Among these, he served UM as president of the UMNAA Junior Board and as vice president of alumni services on the UMNAA Board. “Keith is an exceptional candidate for this award, as he has excelled in his career and is constantly finding new ways to give back to the community,” Dr. Jefferson Walker ’08 wrote in a letter supporting Shoemaker’s nomination for the award. “Keith has supported numerous community and campus organizations. He always gives generously to my nonprofit theatre company, Brick by Brick Arts. I know that he has also donated and devoted time to the Gold Side’s annual alumni brunch, the UM Junior Board’s spring soirée and numerous other events. The College Night Tradition

ollege Night is a long-standing tradition at Montevallo, and no other school has anything quite like it. The first performance in 1919 featured “college stunts” from each of the four classes. Within three years the event had become a contest between Purple and Gold teams. Early College Nights included from each side a toast, a “pep song,” a slow song, a stunt and an impersonation, interspersed with cheers and music. Performances were staged in the dining hall until 1927, then in Reynolds Hall until 1930, when College Night moved to the new Palmer Auditorium. In 1950 students and faculty decided that each side should stage a single production, incorporating drama, comedy, music and dance. College Night productions are original from the ground up. Scripts, music, sets and costumes are all created by students, and students direct, conduct and perform the final product.

The point system

The winner of College Night is decided on the basis of a point system, as determined in advance by a committee of faculty, staff and students. A panel of guest judges reviews the College Night performances and awards each side performance points in categories including acting, directing, music and dance. Pre-performance points also may be earned by winning the Purple-Gold athletic contests leading up to College Night. Another set of points is assigned to rate each side’s spirit, sportsmanship, management of finances and production book. Usually the side with the best theater production is the winner of the College Night competition. It is possible, however, for one side to have a superior production while the other side wins the overall contest on the strength of pre-performance points.

The phrase

Before the “Grand Finale” on Saturday night, each side has chosen a “secret phrase” from the script of its production. Instead of announcing the winner, the president of the Student Government Association traditionally speaks the winning side’s chosen phrase. The response from the competing sides, both victors and vanquished, is always immediate and overwhelming. A former leader — now widely quoted — wrote in 1931 that College Night “is the crest of the wave of college spirit ... it is the high spot that will stand out in your mind as meaning ‘college,’ when all the rest has faded.” 8

For the record

The Purples have won College Night 51 times, while the Golds have claimed 48 victories. The longest winning streak on record came in the early 1960s when the Golds claimed seven College Night wins in a row, forging a now-legendary “golden chain” of victories. The Golds began their seven-in-arow run in 1961. The team claimed bragging rights until 1968 when the Purple side broke the chain. The Purple side enjoyed a six-in-a-row streak in the mid-1940s, winning each year from 1945 until 1950.

The early years In the early years, College Night competition was among the school’s classes. Records show that the first College Night contest was won by the senior class, with the second being a tie between the junior and senior classes. According to “Years Rich and Fruitful — University of Montevallo, 1896-1996,” UM’s centennial history written by the late Mary Frances Tipton, a 1957 graduate of the University, the first College Night event was held in the dining hall on March 3, 1919. All four classes competed.

“Local Legacy” In 2000, College Night was selected as a “local legacy,” and memorabilia from years past was featured in a bicentennial exhibit at the Library of Congress. The exhibit is now housed in the library’s American Folklife Center.

Centennial “College Night: A Centennial Celebration,” written by 2008 graduate Dr. Jefferson Walker, chronicles the tradition’s first 100 years from its humble beginnings as a contest between the classes through its most monumental clashes between the Purples and the Golds. (See page 11.)

Welcome from the Leaders

o say this year has been crazy would be a major understatement. However, through all the craziness — the ups and downs, the stress and the uncertainty — together, we were still able to celebrate our incredible, homecoming tradition and the birth of our two sides. While we can’t say this College Night season was perfect or that we did everything right, we can say that even during a global pandemic, College Night managed to do what it was first intended to do: unite the student body in the purest form of collaboration. As Royal Purples and Loyal Golds, we hope this year represents determination, understanding, love and respect. The love for each of our sides is unmatched, but more importantly the love for our school will continue to live on long after we leave. College Night may only be a small moment in our lifetime, but that moment is filled with overwhelming joy, countless memories and untamable happiness. We hope that when people look back on this year, both sides will see and appreciate all of the hard work and collaboration that it took to make this year possible. PV and GV always, enjoy the show! PURPLE SIDE SONG

GOLD SIDE SONG

Tune: The Whiffenpoof Song Words: Margaret Hamner Utley ’52

Tune: An Old English Round Words: Patrick Sessions ’00

In the town of Montevallo there’s a side we love so well. It’s the place where Purple spirit always dwells. Sing the Purples to our leaders, With our voices raised on high, And the magic of our singing casts a spell, Yes, the magic of our singing to the side we love so well. You can hear us in the morning and the night. We will serenade our leaders, For we took the sacred vow. Then we’ll pass and be forgotten like the rest. We’re loyal Purples, who love our side, Purple Pride! We will explain why we feel this way, Purple Pride! Purple pepsters sing with glee. Show your blood is royalty. Lord have mercy and it will be ... Vic-to-ry.

We are a symphony With our hearts in perfect harmony We’ll make a melody That we can’t make separately We are black and gold Love will guide us, it will see us through New, old, loyal Golds This our song we’ll never be through Don’t think that we will ever stop singing Because a song in our hearts is ringing A song of joy that binds us together This is a song that we’ll sing forever Boom! Sha la la Boom! Sha la la Boom! Sha la la Tune: An Old English Round Words: Barbara Long Curtis ’54 Hey, Ho, Loyal Gold. Stop and look and listen to our chant. Soon we will have won a Golden Victory. Hey, Ho, Loyal Gold. [Repeat in round fashion] 23

ALMA MATER Poem by Virginia Powell Figh Music by Lucy L. Underwood Alma Mater ever glorious Seeking Right and Freedom’s way, Raise a beacon high to guide us; Shed thy light afar, we pray. Sons and daughter sing thy praises; Steadfast virtues win thee fame. May the years be rich and fruitful; Truth and Honor crown thy name. 42
