2015-2016


The College of Fine Arts is pleased to present the first-ever, unified season of performances, concerts, exhibitions and events. This 2015-2016 season is a celebration of the College’s 42nd birthday and a manifestation of our faculty’s longstanding commitment to pushing the limits of imaginative thinking. You will see new additions to our season, including one-performance-only Marquee Events. “Encore!” is a dedicated series of gala receptions with the artists who make it all happen. “Backstage Pass” and “Curtain Call” are engaging post-performance discussions. You can find additional details on all the performances in our new, interactive calendar at montevallo.edu/cfa. I hope you will make plans to join us this season. See you on campus soon! MONTY COLE Into the Wind: Masterworks for Clarinet and Saxophone LEBARON RECITAL HALL SEPTEMBER 23, 7:30 P.M. ALL SEATS GENERAL ADMISSION

Adults $25 UM Fac/Staff & Sr. Citizens $15 Students $10 World Class Music. What does internationally acclaimed clarinet and saxophone artist Monty Cole have in common with Barry Manilow, Kristen Chinoweth and Sarah Mclachlan? He has performed on their concert tours! Recent performances also include an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show with Josh Groban. Cole has toured throughout North and Central America as a clarinet artist, and, as a saxophonist, he has toured with the Guy Lombardo Big Band. Cole will perform Holy Roller for alto sax and piano by Libby Larsen and Sonata for Clarinet by Aaron Copland. RUNNING TIME: 70 MINUTES

KIRK SADUSKI On Producing Documentary Films

Veteran’s Day Lecture and Q&A. Kirk Saduski, Head of Non-Fiction Film and Television at Playtone, is the Co-Executive Producer of the CNN documentary series, The Sixties. Saduski will present and discuss his creative process and highlights from his career. Saduski was the executive in charge on Band of Brothers and Co-Producer on John Adams, The Pacific and Game Change for HBO. He produced the documentaries, David McCullough: Painting with Words and He Has Seen War.

Holiday bustle will fade away. Immerse yourself in the warm sound of sacred and secular Christmas music, performed by the acclaimed Concert Choir and the Festival Brass Quintet! Set within the beauty of the Colonial Chapel, this evening of traditional and innovative arrangements is the perfect way to recall the charm and true magic of the holiday season. Magic Duo. Professor Emeritus Anthony Pattin and Music faculty member Cynthia MacCrae prove that great music is timeless. Proceeds from the concert go toward the Dr. Anthony Pattin Steinway Endowment Fund to repair, restore and maintain the 25 Steinway brand pianos in the Department of Music and to permanently name the class piano lab in Dr. Pattin’s honor.

Rock Musical. UM’s staging will offer some surprising twists and turns and, of course, audience participation! What happens when two clean cut kids run into car trouble and seek help at the sight of light down the road? Little do they know it’s coming from the place where Dr. Frank-N-Furter is in the midst of his maniacal experiments. Contains adult language and content. RUNNING TIME: 2 HOURS

Pulitzer Prize. Olivier. Tony Award. True or False: the more things change, the more things remain the same. This darkly funny play confronts issues of race, class, community, capitalism and the illusion of progress in an atmosphere of political correctness. Incorporating elements of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” the action unfolds in the same home in Chicago’s Clybourne Park on two afternoons 50 years apart. Contains adult language and content. RUNNING TIME: 2 HOURS

LEBARON RECITAL HALL BY WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART APRIL 14 - 16, 7:30 P.M.; APRIL 17, 2 P.M.

Opera. Often translated, “All Women Are Like That”, this timeless comedy follows the romantic adventure of two young soldiers who dare to bet on their lovers’ fidelity. After pretending to leave for battle, the men return in disguise to woo each other’s sweetheart with unexpected results! Mozart mixes some of opera’s bestknown arias and ensembles with both farce and drama to create what many believe to be one of the best operas ever written. This family-friendly production is with full orchestra and all performances are in English. RUNNING TIME: 2 HOURS AND 30 MINUTES

This compelling adaptation of the 1891 play by the German playwright Frank Wedekind explores the universal pleasures and dangers of adolescence, adolescent sexuality, and their struggles to find a place of equilibrium in the world. B JAZZ ON THE GREEN

UM AMPHITHEATRE APRIL 17, 7:30 P.M. Admission is free and open to the public Popular Jazz under the stars. This al fresco concert features great jazz selections from the Big Band Swing era to the present day. Seating is on the lawn at the UM Amphitheatre and unreserved. Patrons are welcome to bring their own chairs, blankets, and picnics; beverages will also be available for purchase until 7:30 P.M. Rain location is Palmer Auditorium.

Contemporary Art. A contemporary painting exhibition featuring faculty member Ryan Foster and invited artist Jon Seals. Exhibition runs weekdays 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. through September 24.


ENTERPRISE SERIES

TRIO ARION LEBARON RECITAL HALL SEPTEMBER 8, 7:30 P.M. Free and open to the public U.S. Premiere. The trio of Diane Schultz (flute), Wendy Richman (viola) and Judy Sullivan Hicks (harp) is one of the most dynamic chamber ensembles in the area. Their playing celebrates the unique combination made famous by Clause Debussy’s Sonate pour flûte, alto, et harpe of 1915, with programing that compliments this seminal work and celebrates its influence on composers that followed. Their UM concert includes the Debussy; trios by Harald Genzmer, Libby Larsen and Jean-Michel Damase; and “Four Thames Crossings” by UM Professor of composition Joseph Landers. Landers’ work was commissioned by the 2013 Bloomsbury Festival in London, and will receive its U.S. premiere by Trio Arion. Sponsored by the UM Concert & Lecture Series.

DEEP WATER HORIZON IO PALMER

BLOCH HALL GALLERY OCTOBER 1: OPENING RECEPTION, 4:30 P.M. GALLERY TALK, 5:00 P.M. Free and open to the public Mixed Media. A mixed-media installation by Washington State University professor, Io Palmer. The work is composed of hundreds of metal and plastic bits sewn onto painted canvas, backed by intricately cut wooden forms. It references the 2010 BP oil spill and its intersection with contemporary culture. Exhibition runs weekdays 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M through October 22.

HIGHLAND CONSORT LEBARON RECITAL HALL OCTOBER 20, 7:30 P.M. Free and open to the public. Renaissance polyphony. A concert presented by a new, Birminghambased ensemble specializing in Renaissance polyphony.

Steinway Artist. Praised as a “big pianist, big musician, big potential” with “compelling artistry that draws the listeners in and envelops them with musical joy,” Hong Kong native pianist Agnes Wan has held the honorary designation of Steinway Artist since 2013.

Surprising combination of musical timbres. Druid City Ensemble performs classical chamber music with their unique combination of soprano, flute, and harp. Hailed as “truly inspiring.”

BLOCH HALL GALLERY Free and open to the public American Artists. An exhibition highlighting the multifaceted nature of contemporary approaches to a traditional medium and subject. The exhibition includes work from 7 American artists from around the county. Exhibition runs weekdays 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M through February 4.


WOOD-FIRING: OLD DOG, NEW TRICKS KENNETH BASKIN, KEITH EKSTAM, RICHARD HIRSCH, JEFF JOHNSTON, SCOTT MEYER & SCOTT ROSS FEBRUARY 18: OPENING RECEPTION, 4:30 - 6:30 P.M.; GALLERY TALK, 5:00 P.M. BLOCH HALL GALLERY Free and open to the public Wood-fired Ceramics. This exhibition explores nontraditional approaches to an ancient process. Featuring two or three pieces per artist, some with collaborative origins and some evidencing new techniques generated by dialogue. Exhibition runs weekdays 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M through March 10.

All Tickets $10 Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. “Are we going to be doing any real acting?” A sharply funny exploration of the secret lives and intentionally wacky behaviors of five strangers in an adult creative drama class. The works in these exhibitions represent the scope of these students’ creative research and their engagement with the discipline. These BFA student exhibitions are 2-3 person shows that conclude their final semester. 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.

APRIL 3 – 7 APRIL 10 – 14 APRIL 17 – 21 APRIL 24 – 28 May 2 – 5 Bodies of Work. The final requirement of the BFA degree is a summation of work completed. These BFA student exhibitions are 2-3 person shows and are scheduled at the end of a student’s final semester. 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.

COMER HALL AUDITORIUM

October 29, 1:00 - 4:00 P.M. Capstone Experience. This annual event explores emerging opportunities beyond graduation for Communication Studies majors. Guest participants include alumni and community leaders from across Shelby County. The event is planned, hosted and executed entirely by students as their senior capstone experience.

Timeless Masterpieces. The nationally recognized Opera Ensemble will present scenes from operas composed by some of the world’s greatest opera composers such as Donizetti, Rossini, Mozart, and Puccini. The Ensemble also performs scenes composed by British and American composers from the 20th and 21st centuries such as Gian-Carlo Menotti, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Benjamin Britten and Mark Adamo.

The choirs also rehearse and perform ‘side-byside’ with University of Montevallo Choirs.

LEBARON RECITAL HALL NOVEMBER 7, 5:00 P.M. A concert of woodwind chamber music performed by the participants. This first annual symposium will include many activities for high school, college, recreational and professional level saxophonists and clarinetists. Master Classes, ensemble choirs, recitals, exhibits, and many guest and featured artists will make this a day to remember.

LEBARON RECITAL HALL NOVEMBER 12, 7:30 P.M. An evening of music written for small brass ensembles and percussion groups. The music will cover many styles including Classical, Contemporary and African.

OCTOBER 5 Lori Ardovino presents a Clarinet/ Saxophone performance of works by Ellerby, Finzi, Bozza and Creston.

OCTOBER 19 Director of Opera, baritone Charles Wood and pianist Lynn Faulkner perform an evening of art songs and arias that will include the forgotten song cycle “Eliland” by Alexander von Fielitz.

VALLO WOODWIND QUINTET

NOVEMBER 5 Quintet members Akilah Bryant, flute, Becky Halliday, oboe, Lori Ardivino, clarinet, Julie McEntee, French horn, and Joseph Sargent, bassoon present a program of mixed repertory from classical to contemporary.
