LUNCHEON PROGRAM University of Montevallo February 14, 2015, 12 p.m. Anna Irvin Dining Hall

PURPLE SIDE SONG What could be better than a combined St. Valentine’s and Mardi Gras weekend? Consider a weekend of Homecoming ’15 at your University of Montevallo! On behalf of your National Alumni Association Board of Directors, I welcome you and friends back to see and experience the academic and athletic refinements to your campus instituted under the leadership of your president, Dr. John W. Stewart III. I encourage you to attend your school and departmental receptions. You will observe first-hand these refinements I am referring to. I encourage you to find a quiet place on campus to sit and re-experience the wonderful ambiance that we all miss and too often take for granted. On your behalf, I want to recognize the incredible work and event detail given to Homecoming ’15 by the Alumni Board’s Special Events Committee under the most-able leadership of Vice President Matt Arnold ’93. And my personal highest accolades and gratitude go to Dr. Tracy Payne-Rockco ’94 for her personal efforts and equally keen eye to detail. I hope your (my) side wins Saturday night! Go Falcons and Laissez les bon temps rouler! Dr. Michael E. Malone ’69 UMNAA President

ALMA MATER WORDS: VIRGINIA POWELL FIGH ’48 MUSIC: LUCY LYNN UNDERWOOD ’54

Alma Mater, ever glorious, Seeking Right and Freedom’s way, Raise a beacon high to guide us: Shed thy light afar, we pray. Sons and daughters sing thy praises, Steadfast virtues win thee fame, May the years be rich and fruitful, Truth and Honor crown thy name.

[TUNE: THE WHIFFENPOOF SONG] WORDS: MARGARET HAMNER UTLEY ’52

In the town of Montevallo there’s a side we love so well. It’s the place where Purple spirit always dwells. Sing the Purples to our leaders, With our voices raised on high, And the magic of our singing casts a spell, Yes, the magic of our singing to the side we love so well. You can hear us in the morning and the night. We will serenade our leaders, For we took the sacred vow. Then we’ll pass and be forgotten like the rest. We’re loyal Purples, who love our side, Purple Pride! We will explain why we feel this way, Purple Pride! Purple pepsters sing with glee. Show your blood is royalty. Lord have mercy and it will be ... Vic-to-ry.

GOLD SIDE SONG [TUNE: AN OLD ENGLISH ROUND] WORDS: PATRICK SESSIONS ’00

We are a symphony With our hearts in perfect harmony We’ll make a melody That we can’t make separately We are black and gold Love will guide us, it will see us through New, old, loyal Golds This our song we’ll never be through Don’t think that we will ever stop singing Because a song in our hearts is ringing A song of joy that binds us together This is a song that we’ll sing forever Boom! Sha la la Boom! Sha la la Boom! Sha la la [TUNE: AN OLD ENGLISH ROUND] WORDS: BARBARA LONG CURTIS ’54

Hey, Ho, Loyal Gold. Stop and look and listen to our chant. Soon we will have won a Golden Victory. Hey, Ho, Loyal Gold. [Repeat in round fashion]

ROBERT ROLLINS Robert K. “Bob” Rollins has been named the University of Montevallo’s Distinguished Alumnus for 2015. He graduated from UM in 1968 with a B.S. in business administration and a minor in history. A native of Selma and resident of Boca Raton, Florida, since 1977, Rollins has been in the insurance industry all his professional life. After spending 10 years working for other companies, he founded The Beacon Group Inc., an insurance and risk management company, in 1979. Serving the company as president, he has grown the business into one of the top 25 agencies in Palm Beach County, an area noted for its success and wealth. Rollins’ success is not limited to The Beacon Group. He has personified the concepts of commitment, dedication to leadership and community service. He has served multiple terms on the board of directors of the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce and was named its Small Business Person of the Year in 1995. He has been elected to multiple terms as a commissioner of the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Parks District. In 2014, Rollins received the Community Service Award from the Snow Foundation, a charity based in Boca Raton that has provided more than $6 million in education assistance to economically disadvantaged families over the past 32 years. Rollins is active in the Florida Association of Independent Insurance Agents, serving on a number of committees and boards. He also has been a leader in the Rotary Club of Boca Raton. In addition, he was named a “Living Legend of Boca” by the Boca Raton Historical Society in 2008. Outside the professional contributions to his community, Rollins has been active in the Florida Youth Soccer Association, having served as president of the Soccer Association of Boca Raton and as a certified soccer official for a number of years. He also has served as a deacon of Advent Lutheran Church, where he and his family attend. At Montevallo, Rollins played a key role in the creation of a scholarship program at UM honoring another alumnus, Bruce Higdon. The Bruce D. Higdon Brotherhood Award, supported by the Sigma/ATO brothers, provides assistance to students in that fraternity.

In a letter of recommendation for the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Higdon wrote, “I can think of no finer example of a self-made success. He (Rollins) is a credit to his family, his friends, his alma mater, his community and to the insurance industry he represents.” He goes on, “Most will never know what assistance he has provided people in need because he would never ‘toot his own horn.’ I’ve never once heard him brag about his accomplishments. He has never changed.” In another letter of support, a fraternity brother wrote, “I have been impressed by the dedication and commitment Bob has for community service, extracurricular activities and leadership within the community. He has given unselfishly of his time and energy, which is evident by his work ethics and accomplishments.” Rollins has also made significant contributions of time and effort to Florida Atlantic University, located in Boca Raton. He has served on the Athletic Advisory Board, the Foundation Board of Directors and chaired the Athletics Hall of Fame. He received the inaugural President’s Talon Leadership Award in 1997. This award celebrates leadership, support and service to the school by alumni, students, campus and community leaders. In the words of a nominator, “His (Rollins’) extraordinary achievements and ability to overcome reflect what is possible through hard work and dedication. He reflects the value – and the values of the University of Montevallo.”

BLAKE HUDSON

The recipient of the Nathalie Molton Gibbons Young Achiever’s Award for 2015 is Ryan Blake Hudson. A 2002 graduate of the University of Montevallo with a double major in history and biology and a double minor in pre-law and political science, Hudson was chosen Senior Elite in both history and biology. He also served as president of the senior class and received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in his senior year. After working as a legal assistant for the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City for a year, Hudson started law school at Duke University, earning both the juris doctor (magna cum laude) and a master’s degree in environmental science and policy in 2007. At his graduation, the law school honored him with the Faculty Award for Outstanding Achievement in Property. After two years as an associate in environmental law at the firm of Baker Botts in Houston, Hudson turned to a long-term interest in teaching and research. He joined the faculty of the College of Law at Stetson University in Florida, where he taught courses in property and environmental law. In 2012, Hudson joined the faculty at Louisiana State University, where he is an associate professor of law at the LSU Law Center, an associate professor in the

School of the Coast & Environment and an adjunct professor of forest law and policy at the School of Renewable Natural Resources. Hudson has had a number of articles published in journals such as the Harvard Environmental Law Review and the Columbia Journal of Environmental Law. He also has written a book titled Constitutions and the Commons: The Impact of Federal Governance on Local, National, and Global Resource Management. Hudson’s commitment to the University of Montevallo is seen in his return to UM for several years to teach a course on environmental law and policy during May term. One nominator who had taught Hudson at UM remarked that, during his (Hudson’s) first class in world civilization in his freshman year, “His hand was up multiple times that first day of school. In the 16 years since then, he has kept his hand up in terms of social engagement, scholarly activity and service to the University of Montevallo, and I feel he would be a most deserving candidate for this award.” He continued, “His contributions in terms of scholarship, teaching and service have reflected more than positively on the local, state, national, and dare I say, international level.”

DEBORAH HUDSON

Deborah Hudson is the recipient of the University of Montevallo’s Nathalie Molton Gibbons Alumni Achievement Award for 2015. Hudson, who resides in Wilton, graduated from UM in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. The majority of Hudson’s professional experience has been in the field of health care insurance. She has served the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the UAB Hospital trauma area since 1990. In addition to her work at UAB, she has been an independent insurance agent since 1985, providing life, health and Medicare supplement insurance. Hudson’s personal commitment to her community is revealed in her activity with a number of organizations directed at improving the lives of others. She serves as the national southern regional director for Gamma Phi Delta Sorority Inc., an organization formed to improve the economic, social and political status of women, encourage education and serve the community. A member of Gamma Phi Delta since

2000, she has held a number of other offices and helped establish the Omicron undergraduate chapter at UM in 2004. The Town of Wilton has also benefited from Hudson’s desire to improve her surroundings. She has served multiple terms on the town council and as mayor pro tempore for a time, as well. In addition, Hudson has been an active member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Wilton for many years, working with the WeCare Ministry and other programs to enhance the spiritual growth of the children, youth and adults of the church. In a letter of nomination for the Nathalie Molton Gibbons Alumni Achievement Award, a friend wrote, “I met the nominee, Deborah Hudson, in 1974 during our freshman year at the University of Montevallo. Deborah’s personal and professional commitment to her community and state make her a deserving UM alumna of this recognition. She is an unsung hero for this state who has touched many lives.”
