A Bond That Cannot Be Broken February 16-17, 2007
PURPLE SIDE SONG
Welcome! Our Homecoming theme for 2007, “A bond that cannot be broken,” reminds me that I share more than a name on a diploma with my fellow alumni. I share precious memories and experiences, bonds that link our Montevallo family across the decades and miles that otherwise separate us. Our lives are intertwined, our shared memories as much of a bond as sisterhood or brotherhood. Few gifts in life will last as long or touch the heart as deeply as the gift of family. And I say to my very special Montevallo family, welcome home! I hope you will take time to share your memories and experiences with fellow classmates, and pass them along to current students as well. Enjoy each activity that is a part of the Homecoming schedule, including class reunions, department open houses and receptions, the Art Auction, the Purple and Gold basketball game, and of course the College Night productions. I invite you to make new memories, new bonds with your Montevallo family. For there are countless things that only families have in common and memories that no one else can make. These precious ties that bind a family together are bonds that time and distance cannot break. As alumni, you will always be part of the family, and I hope you will come back to Montevallo often. Melanie Poole ‘86 UMNAA President
[TUNE: THE WHIFFENPOOF SONG] WORDS: MARGARET HAMNER UTLEY ’52 In the town of Montevallo there’s a side we love so well. It’s the place where Purple spirit always dwells. Sing the Purples to our leaders, With our voices raised on high, And the magic of our singing casts a spell, Yes, the magic of our singing to the side we love so well. You can hear us in the morning and the night. We will serenade our leaders, For we took the sacred vow. Then we’ll pass and be forgotten like the rest. We’re loyal Purples, who love our side, Purple Pride! We will explain why we feel this way, Purple Pride! Purple pepsters sing with glee. Show your blood is royalty. Lord have mercy and it will be ... Vic-to-ry.
GOLD SIDE SONG WORDS: PATRICK SESSIONS ’00 We are a symphony With our hearts in perfect harmony We’ll make a melody That we can’t make separately We are black and gold Love will guide us, it will see us through New, old, loyal Golds This our song we’ll never be through Don’t think that we will ever stop singing Because a song in our hearts is ringing A song of joy that binds us together This is a song that we’ll sing forever Boom! Sha la la Boom! Sha la la Boom! Sha la la [TUNE: AN OLD ENGLISH ROUND] WORDS: BARBARA LONG CURTIS ’54 Hey, Ho, Loyal Gold. Stop and look and listen to our chant. Soon we will have won a Golden Victory. Hey, Ho, Loyal Gold. [Repeat in Round Fashion]
ALMA MATER WORDS: VIRGINIA POWELL FIGH ’48 MUSIC: LUCY LYNN UNDERWOOD ’54 Alma Mater, ever glorious, Seeking Right and Freedom’s way, Raise a beacon high to guide us: Shed thy light afar, we pray. Sons and daughters sing thy praises, Steadfast virtues win thee fame, May the years be rich and fruitful, Truth and Honor crown thy name.

Alumni Achievement Award Jane Gillis Segrest is the recipient of the Nathalie Molton Gibbons Alumni Achievement Award for 2007.
Young Achiever’s Award The 2007 recipient of the Nathalie Molton Gibbons Young Achievers’ Award is Brian Bateh, president and managing partner of AL employment, a regional search firm that focuses on industries such as accounting, office and administrative, medical, information technology, insurance, sales, automotive manufacturing, human resources and marketing, from entry- to senior-level management. AL employment, the brainchild of Bateh, has temporary, temporary to hire, permanent and retained searches.
Jane Gillis Segrest
While a student at Alabama College, Segrest majored in home economics and pursued her interest in art by taking art courses, as well. Now an accomplished painter, Segrest graduated from Alabama College in 1963 with a B.S. degree in home economics. She taught for several years in Panama City, Fla., before leaving the teaching profession to become a stay-at-home mother for her two sons. When her sons reached school age, she renewed her interest in art by taking classes and workshops. Segrest originally learned to paint in oil, but later switched to water media as her primary medium. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and in solo and juried exhibitions from Florida to New Mexico. She notes that one of her most-challenging opportunities came in the form of a commission for 28 abstract paintings for the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Panama City, Fla. Her public art includes “Dolphin Splash, Paradise Dolphin,” in Panama City, and “Peanuts Around Town, With Pride, World Class Nut,” in Dothan. Segrest is an active member of the University of Montevallo National Alumni Association and has served on its board for a number of years. She also has served as chair of the Panama City area alumni chapter for many years. College Night, Founders’ Day and other such special occasions on campus are always on her calendar. In addition, she has always been an advocate for the University, encouraging young people to attend and helping organize her local alumni chapter’s activities.
Brian Bateh
Segrest is a member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama, the Watercolor Society of America, Artists of the USA, the Southern Watercolor Society, the International Society of Acrylic Painters and the American Society of Portrait Artists. Segrest, a native of Hartford and a long-time resident of Panama City, Fla., lives in Bonifay, Fla., with her husband, Ralph.
Bateh earned the B.B.A. in finance from the University of Montevallo in 1998. Before starting AL employment, he served as the branch manager for Robert Half International, one of the nation’s top staffing and search firms, where at the age of 25 he was ranked 18th of 154 directors in the organization. Bateh grew the business at Robert Half through excellent client relations, outstanding sales and innovative management practices. He decided to put his ideas and actions into work of his own, and AL employment was born. From its humble beginnings on April Fool’s Day 2004—with no office space, no employees, no clients, and a non-compete agreement in his back pocket—the company has grown in a mere two-and-one-half years, under Bateh’s leadership, to a $3.5 million company that has recently expanded from its original branch in Hoover to include locations in Mobile and West Palm Beach, Fla.
During his time at Montevallo, Bateh participated in student government, serving as treasurer and business senator. He was active in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, serving as philanthropy chairman, treasurer and president of the organization. He participated in Homecoming festivities for both the Purple and Gold sides and was recognized in Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities. Bateh was recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of the top entrepreneurs of 2006. He lives in Hoover with his wife, Marie, and their two daughters, Anna and Abbie. They are expecting their third child in April.
Distinguished Alumnus Award The recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award is Patrick Evans. Currently the senior lecturer in the practice of sacred music at the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University, Evans is on leave from the University of Delaware, where he has served on the music faculty since 1994. At Delaware, Evans taught voice, diction and directed the opera program. He also directed the University Chorale and organized the first University of Delaware Choral Festival. In addition to his teaching and conducting, he stayed active as a performer, appearing in numerous operas and recitals across the United States and overseas. In his position as senior lecturer at Yale, which he has held since 2004, Evans serves as chapel musician, working with the dean of the chapel, student chapel ministers and student chapel organists, choral directors and singers to coordinate daily worship services for the Marquand Chapel. He teaches global hymnody, musical skills for clergy and practice of sacred music. In addition, he supervises sacred music interns in their church and synagogue work.
All the Way Through Evening, Evans’ expanded Art Song recital about the AIDS Quilt Songbook and stories about the Quilt itself, has been enthusiastically received, always including actual panels from the Quilt as part of the artistic experience. With pianist Djordje Nesic, Evans has presented this liturgical concert/service of remembrance in nine cities and Puerto Rico. While pursuing two degress at Montevallo, Evans, in his “spare time,” served as College Night Gold Leader. He wrote and directed the Gold Show Avon Calling, a hilarious Shakespeare spoof that has been called by many the best College Night show ever written. Evans capped his undergraduate years at UM by being selected to receive the coveted Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the most-prestigious honor to be offered to a UM student. He returns often to the Montevallo campus, sometimes in response to an invitation to perform for various functions, sometimes to produce College Night revues, but also because he just happens to be in Birmingham to visit his family. Evans is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, serving as co-chair for the 2003 Eastern Region Conference, as governor for the state of Delaware from 1995–1997 and 1997–1999, as auditions co-chair for Eastern Region NATS auditions in 1996 and as a member of the local host committee NATS 2000 National Convention in Philadelphia. He is also a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society. Evans lives in New Haven, Conn.
Patrick Evans
Evans earned the bachelor of music degree in vocal performance and the bachelor of music education degree (general/choral) from the University of Montevallo in 1988. After graduating from UM, Evans distinguished himself as a graduate student at The Florida State University, where he served as program director of music theatre and taught voice, music theatre, sight singing and ear training as a graduate assistant. He went on to earn the master of music degree in vocal performance from The Florida State University in 1991 and the doctor of music degree in vocal performance and literature, also from Florida State, in 1998.
