Behavioral & Social Sciences Beginning Fall semester 2013, UM’s Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences made its new home in the University of Montevallo on Main building. The remodeled structure, which houses most of the department’s offices — as well as seven classrooms, a cyber lounge, and lounge areas for both students and faculty — will serve as home to 55 classes throughout the week, which are estimated to bring an average of 840 students per day to downtown Montevallo.

The Montevallo Development Cooperative District (MDCD) is a coalition formed by the City of Montevallo, the University of Montevallo, and Shelby County. Representatives from each entity work together to lead this coalition, which works with funds generated by local sales taxes to improve infrastructure in both the community and at the University, thereby revitalizing the city and promoting the “town and gown” relationship between the two entities, as well as promoting economic development and tourism within the county.

Building history The University of Montevallo on Main building was, at its beginnings, a state-of-the-art structure occupied by Alabama Power Company, and so it seems fitting that it would come full circle almost 40 years later to be used by an institution that has at its core a strong commitment to sustainability. It is perhaps the ultimate recycling project! Built to Alabama Power’s specifications, the structure was cutting-edge at the time (1976) in its use of solar panels and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. The solar panels were paid for in part through a Department of Energy funding program. The system provided heating, water heating, and approximately 15 percent of the cooling for the building. The system eventually came to the end of its useful life and was removed from the structure. Alabama Power occupied the building for more than 30 years until moving that part of the company’s operations to Calera in 2008. The building sat vacant until 2012, when it was purchased by the Montevallo Development Cooperative District. The structure underwent more than a year’s worth of renovations beginning during the summer of 2012, and officially opened August 23, 2013, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that preceded the start of Fall-semester classes on August 26.
