Biscuits rising for Rays

Prattville’s history built on industrialist’s dream

In the early 1830s a New England Yankee named Daniel Pratt headed South, looking to make his fortune. He discovered the fall line of Autauga Creek and used the waterpower to build the base of his industrial empire. He founded the town that bears his name in 1839. Pratt’s foundation was a cotton gin manufacturing plant that still dominates the landscape of downtown today. Continental Eagle Corp., which traces its roots back to Pratt, manufactures gins and other equipment used in cotton production. Along with the gin, Pratt built textile mills, a lumber mills and door and sash factory in the city. He also donated land to be used for schools and churches. Known as Alabama’s first industrialist, Pratt expanded his influence to the fledgling iron producing efforts in the area that would become Birmingham. There he built foundries and furnaces. Pratt City, just outside of Birmingham, is named in his honor. Prattville’s historic downtown area reflects Pratt’s New England roots. In most older Southern cities the courthouse square is the centerpiece of downtown. Prattville was built around the sprawling industrial complexes designed by Pratt, and the required mill pond that impounded the water used to power his factories and mills. Sadly, Prattville lost a large part of its early history on the night of Sept. 10 and 11, 2002, when the Gurney Building, a closed textile mill, burned. The block long building, comprising three stories and a full basement was designed by Pratt. It was a twin of the gin shop, which stands directly across

the Autauga Creek Dam. You would have to wonder if Pratt would recognize his city now. Long gone are the days of Prattville being the sleepy, little farm town where everyone knew everyone else. For the past three decades Prattville and Autauga County have seen tremendous growth. The growth rate has perennially placed Autauga County in the Top 5 list of the fastest-growing counties in the state. Prattville has a population of 35,000 and is seeing a boom in retail growth. The city has added 1.3 million square feet of store space in the past three years, with another 260,000 square feet of development now under construction. The growth is taking place in the eastern sector of the city. Where cotton fields and pastures once stretched from horizon to horizon, there’s a new crop growing. Big box giants like Target, Bass Pro Shops, Belk and J.C. Penny just to name a few, now call the city home. But even with the expansion out east, city leaders haven’t forgotten downtown. A recently completed $1.2 million revitalization project in the historic business district brought in period lighting, new sidewalks and streetscape improvements. An ongoing project is the construction of a creekwalk, following the northern bank of Autauga Creek. The walk begins in the shadows of the gin shop, and plans are to take it down the creek to Pratt Park. So if Pratt came back today, he would see a bigger city, but he still would be able to recognize the cornerstone he laid those many years ago.

The Montgomery Biscuits, the minor-league baseball team that plays its home games at Riverwalk Stadium, earned its screwball nickname in a contest. The team started play in 2004 and is a member of the Double-A Southern League. In 2003, the team’s owners had a Name the Team contest and received about 2,500 entries. A local attorney entered Biscuits based on his intramural softball team from law school. The name received more boos than cheers when it officially was unveiled at Jubilee CityFest. Since, fans have grown attached to it. The Biscuits reported more than $2.5 million in retail sales to the city in their first five seasons. The city owns Riverwalk Stadium, which it rents to the Biscuits for a share of any sales at the

Area boasts mild weather year-round

The Montgomery Biscuits have won two Southern League titles in its five-year history. stadium. In each of its first five seasons, the Biscuits drew at least 290,000 fans and ranked second in the Southern League in attendance. The team also has enjoyed on-the-field success. The Biscuits won Southern League championships in 2006 and 2007. More than three dozen former Biscuits have reached the major leagues, including last year’s American League Rookie of the Year, third baseman Evan Longoria. Longoria and pitcher Scott Kazmir also have played in

the major-league All-Star Game. Kazmir pitched for the Biscuits in 2004. Longoria (2007) and outfielder Delmon Young (2005) won Southern League most valuable player awards. The Tampa Bay Rays, who won the American League championship in 2008, are Montgomery’s major-league parent club. The Durham Bulls, who gained fame in the movie “Bull Durham,” are Tampa Bay’s Triple-A affiliate. The Rays have full-season Class A teams in Port Charlotte, Fla., and Bowling Green, Ky.

The River Region, located some 200 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, enjoys temperate weather with mild winters and a long growing season. The average temperature is 61 degrees, and the area averages about 55 inches of rainfall a year. The growing season is 210 days per year. The area normally enjoys eight hours of sunshine a day. Winters are usually short and mild, with hard freezes a rarity. Even in the dead of winter, it’s not unusual to have days where the high temperature flirts with the 70-degree mark. The area averages less than three-tenths of an inch of snow each year. Summers generally see afternoon highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s. Due to the Gulf’s influence, summer means high, sometimes stifling, levels of humidity. The area generally is considered to be in the geographic center of the Southeast, and elevation ranges from 150 feet

The River Region has a long growing season. above sea level in Montgomery County to 554 feet in Autauga and 745 feet in Elmore counties. The area is prone to severe weather, including thunderstorms and tornadoes. There is a severe weather season that takes place March through May and a second one that spikes in November.

Couples who want to get married in Autauga County must go to the probate office, 176 W. Fifth St. Licenses cost $48. 361-3732. Elmore County residents should go to the Elmore County Courthouse in downtown Wetumpka. Licenses costs $58. 567-1143. Acceptable identifications are a passport, military identification, state-issued identification or driver’s license. If people do not have those forms of identification, they must bring a certified birth certificate and a Social Security card. There is no waiting period, but they must get married within 30 days of obtaining a license. No blood test is required. If one of the people had a divorce within the past six months, that person must show a copy of the divorce papers. In most cases, if either person is younger than 18, both parents must be present to sign a consent form.

The city’s recycling center is operated by the street and maintenance department, which can be contacted at 285-3653, and is located just behind the tennis courts, near the fire station on Grandview Road. The city recycles newspaper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum, but not glass.

The city has a drop-off for recyclable items at 122 Ridgewood Road, which is located just behind the old Gurney plant on Martin Luther King Drive. The hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The center accepts aluminum, paper, plastic, glass and cardboard at the site. People are asked to deposit the recyclables into the trailer at the site. Food items, grass clippings and other perishable items should not be deposited in the recyclables trailer. PEDESTRIANS

All traffic signals must be obeyed, unless directed otherwise by a police officer. Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, but outside of crosswalks, pedestrians must yield to oncoming drivers. It is illegal to pass or overtake a vehicle that has stopped to let a person across the street. Between adjacent intersections at which traffic control signals are in operation, pedestrians cannot cross except inside a crosswalk. It is illegal to walk on the roadway when there is a sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians should use the road’s shoulder. If there is no shoulder, the pedestrian must walk as far to the side of the road as possible and, on a street with two-way traffic, walk on the left side of the road. Hitchhiking is illegal. So is standing in the roadway to sell items, solicit business, etc., unless allowed by a permit from the city.

A call center in Montgomery connects 211 callers to agencies that help provide food, shelter, clothing and other services to those in need and also will direct volunteers to agencies that need their help.

OTHER STATE AND LOCAL INFORMATION

Purchasing liquor: In Alabama, a person must be 21 years old to purchase alcohol products. In recent years, Montgomery approved the sale of draft and Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages at retail stores. Sunday sales remain banned in Autauga and Elmore counties. Purchasing tobacco: A person under the age of 19 cannot purchase, possess or transport tobacco products. Littering: Criminal littering is defined as anyone knowingly depositing in any manner litter on any public or private property without permission. It includes negligently depositing glass or other dangerously pointed or edged objects on or near water to which the public has access for swimming, bathing or fishing, or on a public highway. It also includes discharging sewage, oil products or litter from a water vessel into a river, inland lake or stream, or dropping on any highway any destructive material. Littering is a misdemeanor with penalty: $250 for first offense and $500 for second and subsequent offenses.

ROAD RULES

Seatbelts: All front seat occupants of a passenger car manufactured with safety belts in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 must wear a safety belt when the vehicle is in motion, except for:

An occupant who has a written statement from a licensed physician saying the individual is unable to wear a seatbelt for medical reasons; A rural mail carrier while performing his duties; A driver or passenger delivering newspaper or mail from house to house; Passengers in a vehicle made before 1965; Passengers in vehicles which normally operate in reverse; The protection of children also is governed by a separate statute, which states that any child younger than 6 must be in an age-appropriate child passenger restraint system. For children 4 or 5 years old, that system includes seatbelts installed by the manufacturer, dealer or owner of the vehicle. Penalty: No more than $10 for each offense. Teens and driver’s licenses: There are several restrictions on the issuance of driver’s licenses to drivers under the age of 18. They are: A person under 18 may not apply for a regular driver’s license until the person has held a temporary instruction or learner’s permit for six months. If the applicant is 16 years old, he shall submit verification of a parent or legal guardian’s approval and verification of his completion of at least 30 hours of behindthe-wheel practice or a state-approved driver’s education course. Anyone issued a driver’s license after Oct. 1, 2002, who is either 17 and licensed for less than six months or 16 years old shall have a restricted license. With a restricted license, a teen cannot operate a vehicle if there are more than four people in the car not including a parent or guardian. The licensee also cannot drive between midnight and 6 a.m. unless a parent, guardian or a licensed driver over 21 is with him, or unless he is driving to or from work, a school-sponsored event, a religious event, or in an emergency situation.

River Region awash in things to see and do MAY Memorial Day Fly-In: This three-day event sponsored by Negro Airmen International (NAI) is held every Memorial Day Holiday weekend at Moton field in Tuskegee. Military’s presence big in area The military presence in the Montgomery region is significant, generating nearly $2 billion annually. Maxwell Air Force Base is the only Air Force base in the state. The base also is home to the state’s only Air Force Reserve unit, the 908th Airlift Wing. The National Guard also has its headquarters in Montgomery. Several hundred people also are attached to Army and Marine Corps Reserve units in the area.

Alabama National Guard The Military Department has its headquarters in Montgomery and includes the Army and Air Guard components. Together, the Guard has more than 13,000 soldiers and airmen, as well as civilian employees. Guard units statewide deploy regularly for

From Page 6 Zoo Boo: The Montgomery Zoo celebrates Halloween for several days in late October with nightly attractions for the kids leading up to Halloween night. The zoo normally closes at 5 p.m., but it reopens until 9 p.m. during Zoo Boo so visitors can enjoy haunted train rides, costumed characters, candy and more. 240-4900.

Maxwell Air Force Base Air University is the Air Force’s center for professional military education. Nearly every member of the Air Force will come to Maxwell during their career for officer or enlisted training courses. Air University also includes two commissioning sources, the Officer Training School and the AF ROTC program. The Community College of the Air Force — the largest community college in the country — also has its headquarters at Maxwell. The 42nd Air Base Wing includes security forces, base operations, medical, contracting, communications and other units. The 908th Airlift Wing is the state’s only Air Force Reserve unit and has eight C-130 cargo planes. The unit also has maintenance, operations, security forces and medical personnel. The unit conducts regular humanitarian missions. The 908th also responds to hurricanes and other disasters when asked by the Air Force.

A C-130 flies a training mission at Maxwell Air Force Base. operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Guard also responds to state emergencies like the Enterprise tornado and hurricanes. About 1,250 Air National Guard members are in the region, including about 1,000 at the 187th Fighter Wing at Dannelly Field. The Army Guard has about 1,430 members in the tri-county area. The 926th Engineer Brigade is an Army Reserve unit with its headquarters in Montgomery. The unit deployed to Iraq in 2008 for a year developing infrastructure and rebuilding war-torn areas around Baghdad. The unit has more than 120 members. The 131st Military Public Affairs Detachment of the Army Reserve is also in Montgomery. Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, is an infantry reserve unit based in Montgomery. About 130 members of the unit deployed in 2007 and some members of the unit are preparing to deploy again in 2009.

MATS provides fixed route and paratransit service within city limits of Montgomery. The fixed route system averages 4,500 trips daily (more than 1 million trips annually) over approximately 4,000 daily route miles. Famous faces have called River Region home of the Confederacy, where he lived during the early months of the Civil War, is at 644 Washington Ave. and open to tours. Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald: She met F. Scott Fitzgerald while he was stationed in Montgomery. In 1917, he left Princeton to join the Army. The money from his first novel, “This Side of Paradise,” allowed him enough financial security to marry her. Fitzgerald, the author of such works as “The Great Gatsby” and “Tender is the Night,” and his wife, a dancer/ writer/painter, became the most celebrated couple of “the Jazz Age.” The house at 919 Felder Ave., where the couple briefly lived in the 1930s, has become The F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum. Martin Luther King Jr.: In 1954, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. became the minister of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, now Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. After successfully leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and 1956, he became America’s greatest civil rights leader. He organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and his leadership in protests in Birmingham and other Southern cities and the March on Washington helped earn him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated in 1968. J. Kelly Fitzpatrick: This influential Alabama artist and Wetumpka native lived from 1888 to 1953. Besides influencing artists from the 1930s to the present with his

Rosa L. Parks: When she refused to give her seat to a white passenger on Dec. 1, 1955, Parks helped spark not only the Montgomery Bus Boycott, but also the civil rights movement. She was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’s highest honor,

in 1999. Daniel Pratt: Born in New Hampshire in 1799, Pratt often is cited as Alabama’s first great industrialist. He created one of the country’s great cotton gins, as well as one of the state’s first planned developments, Prattville, when he moved to Autauga County in 1833. He built a railroad, a bank, an iron foundry, sawmills, grist mills and other enterprises before his death in 1873. Bart Starr: Born Jan. 9, 1934, in Montgomery, the Sidney Lanier High School graduate went on to become one of the greatest professional quarterbacks of all time. He led the Green Bay Packers to five NFL titles and to wins in Super Bowls I and II. He was the regular season MVP in 1966 and the MVP of both Super Bowls in which he played. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton: The famous blues singer was born in Montgomery on Dec. 11, 1926. Thornton’s hits included “Hound Dog,” which sold more than 2 million copies before Elvis Presley recorded it, and “Ball and Chain,” which was a huge hit for her before Janis Joplin recorded it. George C. Wallace: Alabama’s four-time governor and former presidential candidate gained initial fame as a segregationist, blocking black students from entering the University of Alabama, but later renounced these views and won support from many

black Alabamians. Shot by a would-be assassin while he was campaigning for president in 1972, Wallace was paralyzed below the waist. Hank Williams: Although born near Georgiana, the man who many consider country music’s greatest artist began his career in Montgomery and thought of the city as his home. His hits include many of country music’s greatest songs, including “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Long Gone Lonesome Blues,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Take These Chains from My Heart,” “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You),” “Jambalaya,” “Honky Tonk Blues” and “Hey, Good Lookin’.” After he died on New Year’s Day 1953, more than 20,000 people came to his funeral. His grave is in the Oakwood Cemetery Annex, and there is a Hank Williams Museum at 118 Commerce St. The Wright Brothers: Orville and Wilbur Wright, the inventors of the first successful airplane, had a flying school in Montgomery in 1910 on the current site of Maxwell Air Force Base. During the four months the brothers were in Montgomery, they started the first civilian flight school in the country, had the first night flight in the world, and made decisions that would change dramatically the design of their aircraft by adding a rear stabilizer, a much more powerful engine and landing wheels instead of a sled. A statue in their honor has been erected on the base.

From Civil War and civil rights to famous musicians and actors, the tri-county area has been home to some of America’s most famous people. Here are some of them: Ralph Abernathy: As the leader of Montgomery’s First Baptist Church, the Rev. Ralph Abernathy helped the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. organize the famous 1955 bus boycott. He later became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Tallulah Bankhead: She was born in Huntsville, but after her mother died just weeks after giving birth to her, the famous stage and screen actress spent much of her youth in Montgomery. Her successes included debut roles in the plays “Dark Victory,” “The Little Foxes,” and “The Skin of Our Teeth” and the lead in the Alfred Hitchcock film “Lifeboat.” Nat King Cole: Cole, who had almost 30 top-40 hits, including “Unforgettable,” “Ramblin’ Rose,” “Looking Back” and “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer,” was born on March 17, 1919, in Montgomery. He moved to Chicago with his family when he was a child. Cole was the first African American to be the host of a prime-time TV variety show. Jefferson Davis: Born in Elkton, Ky., in 1808, Davis was the president of the Confederacy. A star in front of the Capitol marks where he took the oath of office, and the First White House

The garden will feature plants and shrubs that can be identified and enjoyed by their odor, thus giving those with limited or no sight an opportunity to enjoy the garden. Future plans include descriptions in Braille and other amenities that will allow those with physical limitations to enjoy the area. Playground and walking path also featured. Pratt Park: At Doster Street and Doster Road Located in the “heart of old Prattville,” this park features a small pond, a walking trail, an amphitheater and picnic tables, and is adjacent to A Child’s Place playground. RIVER REGION ARTS GROUPS Alabama Dance Theatre: An honor company in the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association, ADT combines professional and student dancers in a number of performances . Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts: Each year, the Davis Theatre features a lineup of national touring productions of Broadway musicals and music-based entertainment. Way Off Broadway Theater: This Prattville community theater group debuted a few years ago with “An Evening of Culture” by Mark Landon Smith. 358-0297. 1 package yeast 2 tablespoons warm wa-

1 ⁄ 4 cup oil 5 cups plain flour 2 cups buttermilk 1 teaspoon baking soda 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar Dissolve yeast in warm water. Combine with remain-

ing ingredients and mix well. To bake, roll dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut with biscuit cutter, or drop dough onto baking sheet sprayed lightly with non-stick cooking spray. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Refrigerate dough, and use as needed. Recipe from “The Country Kitchen”

Sweet Tea 3 quarts water (give or take) 2 cups sugar

4 quart-size tea bags Bring water to a rolling boil. Add sugar, and stir to dissolve. Add 4 tea bags, and stir. Let sit 20 minutes or so. Pour tea-sugar mixture into 1 gallon jug or container. Fill the rest with cool water. Note: If you’d like, you can add lemon juice, slightly frozen pink lemonade concentrate, peach juice or other flavors to your tea. Autauga, Elmore schools push for excellence Residents in Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga counties can find something to feel good about in any of the tricounty school systems — from awards for academic achievement and programs to being ranked among some of

Hank Williams, an American music legend, began his career as a teenager in Montgomery. He recorded many country classics, including “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Hey, Good Lookin’” and “Cold, Cold Heart.” He died New Year’s Day 1953, and each Jan. 1, a memorial is held at his grave site in the Oakwood Cemetery Annex on Upper Wetumpka Road. The first first full weekend of every March March, the Selma Bridge Crossing is held to commemorate the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march, “Bloody Sunday,” and the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. What do country music stars, diving pigs and carnival rides have in common? They’re all part of the Alabama National Fair, held each October at Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum. Riverw Riverwalk Stadium on Coosa Street is home to the Montgomery Biscuits, the Class AA affiliate of the Mont Tampa Bay Rays. The Biscuits brought professional baseball back to the city in 2004 after a 24-year absence, and won back-to-back Southern League championships in 2006 and 2007.
