What’s New in Montgomery
NEW PLACES TO STAY, SHOP & ENTERTAIN:
Come explore some of the exciting new additions to Montgomery’s tourism and retail scene! There is a new hotel opening in the heart of Montgomery’s historic district which is full of some of Montgomery’s local restaurants, bars and shopping. Trilogy is a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel set to open in the beginning of 2023.
In addition to ideal places to stay, Montgomery has been adding to their portfolio of prime shopping with recent exciting additions. BeYOUtiful Boutique in downtown Montgomery has become a staple in the downtown retail market. On the east side of town, The Shoppes at Eastchase have been growing tremendously in recent months with the opening of South Boutique, Lululemon, and Aerie
WHERE TO DRINK & DINE:
Immerse yourself in the flavor of Montgomery and relax at some of our finest bars and breweries. The hospitality scene is growing! New places to visit for a drink or unique dish are popping up everywhere.
If you have a love for the finer things, stop in and stay awhile at 23 Court Cigar Bar to enjoy an upscale evening of dress codes, premium cigars, fine spirits, and hand-crafted cocktails. Located on 23 South Court Street, this cigar bar offers the perfect atmosphere to don your sport’s coat or cocktail dress and indulge in the lavish experience that is 23 Court.
For a more family-friendly outing, hop on over to Red Bluff Bar at The Silos. The historic location previously served as an old train station, the Silo Depot, until 1995. Vintage Hospitality's recently opened bar offers a rotating draft selection, a variety of wine and cocktails, and family-friendly games including horseshoes and cornhole. The best part? Red Bluff is pet-friendly so your pup can tag along! Or head over to The Statesman and enjoy craft cocktails, mocktails, a beer and wine bar, and live music.
When it comes to upscale dining, there is no better place than the newly opened Ravello Ristorante whose name and menu is inspired by a small town off the Amalfi oast. Ravello is led by award-winning Executive Chef Eric Rivera and the seating is in high demand, so make sure you make your reservation in advance! If you’re wanting a taste of the sea, you’ll find the perfect palette at Chuck’s Fish House
The sixth location of Chuck’s Fish opened in Montgomery spring 2022. They specialize in authentic Gulf seafood, provide aged, naturally-raised beef that is cut in-house, and feature an awardwinning sushi bar.
You can’t beat a good brunch, and Montgomery has not one, but two new highly-rated brunch spots! VYBZ Brunch is a premier brunch restaurant that opened September 2022 with a wideranging menu and bottomless mimosas—yes, bottomless. The Bubbly Hen is a, locally owned full-time brunch eatery on the East side of Montgomery that serves breakfast, lunch, & everything in between—from creative coffees to build your own bloody marys!
Keep it casual at Hilltop Public House—a local coffee shop and bar located in the historic Cottage Hill neighborhood near downtown Montgomery. A great spot for locals and visitors alike to grab a cup of coffee to kick start the day or a drink to winddown afterwards. Their menu offers a wide variety of espresso beverages, beers, cocktails, and wine. Plus, you can often find The Funky Forte food truck parked out front of Hilltop. The Funky Forte serves elevated gastropub foods. To go along with their fun name, the locations and menu change weekly, so be sure to check their Facebook page to find where and what they are serving this week!
NEW ATTRACTIONS:
Did you know you can go whitewater rafting right in the heart of Montgomery? The city’s newest and biggest addition, set to open in summer of 2023, is Montgomery Whitewater—a world-class outdoor recreation and entertainment facility situated on the banks of the Alabama River. The Montgomery Whitewater facility offers a stateof-the-art, man-made whitewater for rafting and paddling, an outdoor amphitheater and endless outdoor activities like a ropes course, zip line, hiking trails, and more!
Stay active by lacing up your rollerblades and skating circles at Roller Palace—a new roller skate rink at Eastdale Mall which opened in December 2022. This new skating rink replaced the Ice Palace, an ice skating rink in the center of Eastdale Mall. Step into the rink and let out your inner child!
There are plans for a new park in North Montgomery to open in 2023. Shady Street Trailhead Park is part of a larger plan to expand downtown riverfront activities. The plan is to eventually connect a series of green spaces through five miles of gardens and walking-biking paths that stretch from north Montgomery, to Maxwell Air Force Base along the riverfront.
CAN’T MISS EVENTS:
Two can’t miss events are coming to Montgomery in 2023. Make sure you plan to attend!
For the first time ever, the Honda Battle of the Bands showcase will be held on an HBCU campus! This will be the first live event since 2020, and Honda is bringing its anticipated showcase to Montgomery’s own Alabama State University. There will be six bands competing, including the Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets. The showcase will be held on February 18th. Tickets are available now on the Honda Battle of the Bands website!
Don’t miss the chance to wish Hank a “happy 100th birthday!” The Hank Williams Museum is hosting a big celebration for the 100th birthday of Hank Williams on September 1517th. There will be music by various artists and more, so make sure you save the date and come out to celebrate one of the greats!

History Buff
If you are a lover of learning about Alabama’s unique past, then Montgomery is YOUR place!
• Start your day at the Museum of Alabama inside the Alabama Dept. of Archives. If you want the full story of Alabama from our indigenous people to colonization, slavery, civil war and the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement, then this will fill you in perfectly
• After, don’t go too far as the First White House of the Confederacy is right next door and the newly installed Bicentennial Park is right around the corner. This park features 14 monuments chronicling 200 years of Alabama History.
• Once you get to Bicentennial Park, you are on the most historical small street in the nation, Dexter Avenue. This street is where the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March ended, right at the steps of the Capital. Dr. Martin Luther King preached the next block down at Dexter Ave. King Memorial Baptist Church and you are just minutes from the Civil Rights Memorial
• As you travel down Dexter Avenue, you will enter “Lower Dexter” which is full of great eateries like Rock n' Roll Sushi and Prevail Union: a local coffee shop.
• At the end of Dexter Ave is a beautiful fountain. We call this area 360 degrees of History! Stop by the Montgomery Visitor’s Center and catch a FREE daily tour to learn about all that you can do and see right off this iconic corridor and what is in walking distance, such as landmarks like the Freedom Rides Museum, Hank Williams Museum and the Winter Building and Marker detailing the telegram that was sent to begin the Civil War… and that is just a few!
• Make sure you take a picture with Mrs. Rosa Parks’ statue where it is believed she first got on the bus befoe refusing to get out of her seat just a block down the road from the Rosa Parks Museum
• If you are searching for Truth and Reconciliation from our dark and hard past, Montgomery is at the forefront! Head over to the Mothers of Gynecology where you will learn the story and pay tribute to three named slaves who were brutally tested on, without anesthesia, in one man’s quest to become known as the “father of gynecology”. Right up the street is the award winning, most iconic structure in the last 5 years, the Memorial for Peace and Justice. Here you will learn about lynching victims from across the South as they are finally memorialized and many of their stories told End this journey by heading over to the Legacy Pavilion home to the Legacy Museum which miraculously explains the correlation of slavery to mass incarceration in this country. You may need a bit more time than you think at the Legacy Museum, so make plans to stop next door at Pannie George’s Kitchen, Southern cuisine you must not miss.
• Just a block away, you can step back in time to Old Alabama Town. Visit a one-room schoolhouse, grits mill, cotton gin, log cabin, and the oldest building in Montgomery—Lucas Tavern! Explore how early Alabamians lived and worked in Old Alabama Town.

• If brunch is your thing, then Cork and Cleaver, The Bubbly Hen or Shashy’s Bakery may be perfect for you!

• Got an hour or two? Head over to Escapology or Civil Axe Throwing to get your mind working and your arms flinging
• Theater or Music buffs? Check the event calendar at Montgomery Performing Arts Centre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival or Cloverdale Playhouse and the Live Music Calendar for the Sanctuary, 1048 Jazz and Blues Club, BB King’s Blues Club or The Exchange Bar. Here you will find several moe restaurants, ranging from pizza to fine dining! Aound the corner, you can pour your own beer at Alabama’s first full self-pour Beer Bar & Restaurant: Tower Taproom
• If you can do all this before 8pm, catch the last Sip-N-Cycle on our Alabama River. Captain Stu is waiting for you at the BYOB fun experience where he promises you can do more sipping than cycling if you desire!

HOW TO SPEAK SOUTHERN
If you’re not from around here, some of the lingo you’ll read and hear at area restaurants may be confusing. Here’s a little dictionary to help decipher Southern food speak.
Meat & Three:
Usually refers to more casual “home cooking” spots and means the menu offers a plate with your choice of one meat (fried chicken, country fried steak, fried catfish — sensing a pattern hee?) and three sides, usually Southern-style vegetables like fried okra, fried green tomatoes, squash casserole, creamed corn, collard greens and more. Often served with cornbread or a biscuit.
Grits:
A creamy, savory porridge-like dish made from ground hominy and often embellished with cheese. Shrimp & Grits is a favorite Dixie dish.
Sweet Tea:
The default setting when you order a glass of iced-tea down here. And sweet means S-W-E-E-T. Specify “unsweet” if you don’t want any sugar. Or ask for half-and-half for just a little sweetness.
CUCOS MEXICAN CAFÉ
Cucos is the place to fill up on Tex-Mex standards. If you’re feeling famished, eat like a world leader by ordering the cozy eatery’s signature dish, the El Presidente. It includes cheesesmothered enchiladas, rice and refried black beans, crunchy chimichangas and a taco.

The Oyster Sampler features 16 tender oysters, including four classic Rockefeller, four chargrilled, four Bienville (topped with shrimp, crab and parmesan) and four Monterey (topped with bacon, melty cheddar and spicy jalapenos).

The Town of Pike Road is relatively young, just 25 years after its incorporation in 1997. As a growing municipality, the town offers verything a community needs — including a bright future. However, despite its youth as a municipality, the Town of Pike Road includes historic communities that have thrived in the area for over 200 years. Designated the fastest-growing municipality in Alabama for the past two decades, the town’s mission statement Planning for Progress while Maintaining Character is evident in both its peaceful, hometown feel and energetic, fresh ideas.
The town’s sprawling meadows and woodland glens are dotted with over 70 unique neighborhoods, each with its own personality and including some of the region’s oldest settlements. The population of nearly 10,000 residents is diverse, with citizens across the demographic spectrum calling the Town of Pike Road home.
Our motto is 'Welcome Home,’ these words exemplify the spirit of this town and the feeling we try to convey to everyone who comes here to visit or stay.

PROUD HERITAGE
In 1815, the arrival of three families — the Marks, Mathews and the Meriwethers — marked the beginning of the Pike Road community. They took to the area’s fertile land and began farming. Soon, they were joined by other families who did the same. A small but booming town sprouted up near the railroad at the intersection of the highly-traveled Pike and Meriwether Roads.
A PROSPEROUS PRESENT
Its ability to attract such a variety of people is proof of its appeal. Yet, perhaps the town’s greatest asset is its commitment to preserving the past while planning wisely for the future. Small family farms and equestrian facilities maintain the town’s ties to its agricultural roots, and as new businesses and new neighborhoods come to the area, this creates a harmonious mix of yesterday and today.
A PROMISING FUTURE
Since its incorporation, the Town of Pike Road has expanded to a new crossroads — near the intersection of Pike Road and Vaughn Road, which is the location of the Town Hall facility and a variety of bustling businesses and restaurants. To ensure continued prosperity, the Town of Pike Road encourages citizen input and thoughtful planning to determine its direction and drive it there.
One major priority has now been realized: In December 2010, the town established a public school system. Over the past decade, Pike Road Schools has celebrated its first graduting class and grown to serve over 2,700 students on three campuses. The town is looking forward to the construction of a new high school on the horizon.
ART, AGRICULTURE, AND EVERYTHING ELSE
There is something for everyone in the Town of Pike Road, whether it’s getting your hands into the dirt or on to a paint brush. The ENHANCE initiative, created in the early days of the town to meet the interests expressed by the community, forms a roadmap for tailor-made quality of life programs. The work of volunteer-led groups like the Pike Road Arts Council and Agriculture & Stewardship Club provide opportunities for the community to connect, learn, and grow together.
The Town of Pike Road is proud to provide a home for these interests with the recent creations of the Pike Road Arts Center on Wallahatchie Road and the Agriculture, Recreation & Performing Arts Park across town on Trotman Road. Amidst a constant array of art shows and workshops, the Pike Road Arts Council’s Plein Air Paint Out, an outdoor painting event hosted each October, brings together more artists than nearly any other in Alabama. The Park includes an open-air arena and community education space, and construction continues on a multi-use ball field compl x. Future plans include
other educational and agricultural amenities, as well as an amphitheater. Also designed with community in mind, the Town of Pike Road Natural Trail System provides opportunities for walking, jogging, horseback riding, and trail cycling as it connects both historic communities and emerging neighborhoods. Portions of the Natural Trail currently run alongside Marler, Meriwether, and Wallahatchie Roads, with trailhead facilities providing parking, restrooms, and picnic space at both ends of Marler Road. Once completed, the Natural Trail will span over 30 miles as it highlights the beauty of the town’s rural landscapes.

MILLBROOK COMFORT. CONVENIENCE. COMMUNITY.
A Proud History
With a rich heritage dating back to the 1700s, the Millbrook area, including Robinson Springs, Coosada, Deatsville and Elmore, was known for such prominent leaders as Bolling Hall, William Wyatt Bibb, John Archer Elmore and Benjamin Fitzpatrick. The first pioneer home built in pesent day Millbrook was known as Ellerslie, constructed in 1818 by Bolling Hall, a well-known statesman and planter of that time. Hall’s home still stands and is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Between World War I and World War II, the communities of Millbrook, Coosada, and Robinson Springs, later referred to as the Tri-Community, began to evolve and grow, adding schools, churches and rail transportation. Contributing to the population growth during this era were unfortunate outbreaks of diseases in the more populated city of Montgomery. As a result, Millbrook became a place to retreat during the long, hot summers. Soon, the seasonal population began to stay year round.

Looking Forward
Today, the area retains the best of its early features and natural resources, while aggressively pursuing economic development opportunities. Millbrook has experienced a more than 40 percent increase in its population in the last 20 years, and this influx of nw residents has spurred unprecedented residential building, which in turn has attracted new commercial development that keeps gaining momentum.
The great outdoors plays a prominent role in Millbrook’s quality of life, with six well-equipped and maintained public parks that provide recreational options for all ages. A new mega sports complex, called 17 Springs, is currently under development that will transform the Highway 14 corridor and position the city as a regional draw and destination point. Other outdoor activities can be enjoyed at nearby Lakes Martin and Jordan, the Alabama River, the Alabama Nature Center and the Grandview YMCA. The City will continue to capitalize on these recreational opportunities.

MAXWELL GUNTER MONTGOMERY
In 2015, the warm welcome and strong support that Montgomery has consistently provided to all who live and work at Maxwell earned the city a prestigious national award, the Altus Trophy.
The recognition is presented annually to the city that has shown the most “outstanding support to an Air Education and Training Command base,” and Montgomery was chosen from many other cities for the distinction.
The city has a long history of aviation excellence, starting back in 1910, when the famous “fathers of flight” the Wright brothers, chose Montgomery as the spot for their first civilian flying school. Tt same site would later become Maxwell Air Force Base.
Through the years, city leaders and everyday citizens have reached out to Maxwell by holding events like Military Appreciation Week and Military Night at Biscuits baseball games. In addition, The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce includes a Military Support Council that regularly holds events like “Eggs and Issues” breakfast meetings that allow military representatives and city and state leaders to gather and discuss important issues.
Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base have always been close partners, and the capital city is proud to have a military institution of such stature as part of its community.
Maxwell Air Force Base’s 2017 air show was recognized as being the Best-of-the-Best by the International Council of Air Shows.
