WHERE TO DRINK & DINE:
Immerse yourself in the flavor of Montgomery and relax at some of our finest bars and breweries. The hospitality scene is growing! New places to visit for a drink or unique dish are popping up everywhere. If you have a love for the finer things, stop in and stay awhile at 23 Court Cigar Bar to enjoy an upscale evening of dress codes, premium cigars, fine spirits, and hand-crafted cocktails. Located on 23 South Court Street, this cigar bar offers the perfect atmosphere to don your sport’s coat or cocktail dress and indulge in the lavish experience that is 23 Court. For a more family-friendly outing, hop on over to Red Bluff Bar at The Silos. The historic location previously served as an old train station, the Silo Depot, until 1995. Vintage Hospitality's recently opened bar offers a rotating draft selection, a variety of wine and cocktails, and family-friendly games including horseshoes and cornhole. The best part? Red Bluff is pet-friendly so your pup can tag along! Or head over to The Statesman and enjoy craft cocktails, mocktails, a beer and wine bar, and live music. When it comes to upscale dining, there is no better place than the newly opened Ravello Ristorante whose name and menu is inspired by a small town off the Amalfi
Coast. Ravello is led by awardwinning Executive Chef Eric Rivera and the seating is in high demand, so make sure you make your reservation in advance! If you’re wanting a taste of the sea, you’ll find the perfect palate at Chuck’s Fish House. If drinks with a view are more what you’re looking for, check out the new, cool vibe of Waterworks Montgomery, a rooftop bar located in the Trilogy Hotel downtown. Or check out their interior bar and restaurant Kinsmith, in the old water works building. You can’t beat a good brunch, and Montgomery has not one, but two new highly-rated brunch spots! VYBZ Brunch is a premier brunch restaurant that opened in September 2022 with a wideranging menu and bottomless mimosas—yes, bottomless. The Bubbly Hen is a locally owned full-time brunch eatery on the East side of Montgomery that serves breakfast, lunch, and everything in between—from creative coffees to build your own bloody marys!
Keep it casual at Hilltop Public House—a local coffee shop and bar located in the historic Cottage Hill neighborhood near downtown Montgomery. A great spot for locals and visitors alike to grab a cup of coffee to kick start the day or a drink to winddown afterwards. Their menu offers a wide variety of espresso beverages, beers, cocktails, and wine. Plus, you can often find The Funky Forte food truck parked out front of Hilltop Public House. The Funky Forte serves elevated gastropub foods. To go along with their fun name, the locations and menu change weekly, so be sure to check their Facebook page to find where and what they are serving this week!

Built in 1851, Alabama’s State Capitol Building is one of the only state capitols designated a National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest capitol buildings in the country. (And we think one of the most beautiful too!) The tour guides at the Capitol share a wealth of knowledge and insider information. D

Blast from the Past
Hands-on Gallery & Grandma's Attic, a hands-on gallery, located in the Museum of Alabama, gives children a chance to experience Alabama's past in an interactive environment. The gallery offers a unique hands-on area where children dress up in clothes from an earlier time and play with a variety of objects from the non-permanent education collection. It also features discovery boxes that aid children in exploring different topics in Alabama history such as World War II, American Indian pottery, quilt-making and Alabama's first ladies. Games, puzzles, photos, maps, toys, etc. stimulate children to learn by creating and playing. D
INSIDER TIP While you’re downtown, stop in Tucker Pecan Co. and enjoy hand-dipped ice cream cones for a dollar, sample pecans and shop for unique gifts.

History Buffs If you are a lover of learning about Alabama’s unique past, then Montgomery is YOUR place!
18
•
Start your day at the Museum of Alabama inside the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History building. If you want the full story of Alabama from our indigenous people to colonization, slavery, civil war and the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement, then this will fill you in perfectly!
•
After, don’t go too far as the First White House of the Confederacy is next door and the newly installed Bicentennial Park is a block over. This park features 14 monuments chronicling 200 years of Alabama History.
•
Once you get to Alabama Bicentennial Park, you are on Dexter Avenue, nicknamed the most historical short street in the nation. This street is where the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March ended, right at the steps of the Capitol. Dr. Martin Luther King preached the next block down at Dexter Ave. King Memorial Baptist Church and you are just minutes from the Civil Rights Memorial.
•
As you travel down Dexter Avenue, you will enter “Lower Dexter” which is full of great eateries like Rock n' Roll Sushi, Prevail Union, and Lorraine's Bake Shop a local cookie shop.
•
At the end of Dexter Ave is a beautiful fountain. We call this area 360 degrees of History! Stop by the Montgomery Visitor’s Center and catch a FREE daily tour to learn all you can do and see off this iconic corridor. In walking distance, are landmarks like the Freedom Rides Museum, Hank Williams Museum, and the Winter Building and Marker detailing the telegram that was sent to begin the Civil War… and that is just a few!
•
Make sure you take a picture with the Rosa Parks' Statue where it is believed she first got on the bus before refusing to get out of her seat just a block down the road from the Rosa Parks Museum.
•
If you are searching for truth and reconciliation from our dark and hard past, Montgomery is at the forefront! Head over to the Mothers of Gynecology where you will learn the story and pay tribute to three named slaves who were brutally tested on, without anesthesia, in one man’s quest to become known as the “father of gynecology”. Right up the street is the award winning, most iconic structure in the last five years, the The National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Here you will learn about lynching victims from across the South as they are finally memorialized and many of their stories told. End this journey by heading over to the Legacy Pavilion home to The Legacy Museum which miraculously explains the correlation of slavery to mass incarceration in this country. You may need a bit more time than you think at The Legacy Museum, so make plans to stop next door at PannieGeorge’s Kitchen, Southern cuisine you must not miss.
•
Just a block away, you can step back in time to Old Alabama Town. Visit a one-room schoolhouse, grits mill, cotton gin, log cabin, and the oldest building in Montgomery—Lucas Tavern! Explore how early Alabamians lived and worked in Old Alabama Town.

EXPERIENCE ADVENTUROUS
THE
SIDE OF MONTGOMERY Montgomery Whitewater is a 120-acre outdoor recreation and entertainment complex off the bank of the Alabama River on the edge of downtown Montgomery. Designed to be completed in multiple phases, phase I of Montgomery Whitewater opened in July 2023. It includes the park’s main attraction, two manufactured whitewater channels, where 12 million gallons of water are continuously pumped and recirculated to create more than 310,000 square feet of rolling "river" rapids. Additionally, there is a restaurant and bar overlooking the Competition Channel, paved walking and
MVG_2024p1_r7-002-084.indd 20
bike trails alongside both channels, multiple greenspaces, a fully-stocked retail store, and an outdoor concert venue. Montgomery Whitewater's massive river system is divided into two channels: Adventure and Competition. The adventure channel is for novice or intermediate skill levels, and participants can be as young as eight. It’s an excellent introduction to whitewater but also offers enough action to entice those with paddling experience to steer a kayak, inflatable kayak, or unguided raft through its rapids. The Competition
Channel is more challenging and designed to mimic Olympic-standard competition channels, challenge expert paddlers, as well as host kayak races (like the Alabama Cup series in October) and other competitive events. Guided rafting trips are available on both channels.
Phase II of the outdoor recreation and entertainment complex will include ropes and zip-lining courses, hiking and bike trails, a rock-climbing wall, and access to explore the Alabama River on flatwater kayaks and standup paddle boards.
12/6/23 12:27 PM
CATCH THE WAVE
The brand-new Montgomery Whitewater is making big waves with promises of an unforgettable outdoor experience on its fast-moving rapids.
Grab some friends and climb in a raft to enjoy every dip, spin, and bounce under an expert's instruction and watchful eye. If your skills are more advanced, rent a raft, inflatable kayak, or standup paddleboard and guide yourself down the whitewater channels. Whether you're a whitewater pro or never picked up a paddle, Montgomery Whitewater is for you.
More Adventure, More Fun! *
The park's 120 acres are packed with activities and amenities, including Eddy's full-service restaurant and bar, an outdoor concert venue, trails, and more.
*
Approximately 2,000 people can paddle the channels each day.
*
12 million gallons of water are continually recirculated, resulting in an always-exciting overflow of whitewater fun.
Better By Design Montgomery Whitewater's channels were designed by engineer Scott Shipley and his firm S20. In combination with S20's years of experience, Shipley brings his insight and expertise to the project. A veteran of three Olympic games ('92, '96, '00) and holder of four world titles, he was one of the world's leading paddling competitors for over 25 years.
GREAT GUIDES
"Right side forward! Left side forward! Do not stop. Go! Go! Go!" Directions like these, combined with squeals, laughs, and a few full-on screams, can be heard in the air at Montgomery Whitewater. The outdoor recreation and entertainment complex's expert raft guides help guests navigate the channels so they can safely experience the maximum amount of fun from their adventure. However, a raft guide does more than shout out paddling instructions, as Anthony Lopez, the raft guide manager, explained. "Our guides are on a boat with a bunch of strangers for 90 minutes, and they're not just guiding them physically; it's emotional too. I can teach paddling skills. The intangible that makes a great guide is being a good communicator,” he said.
MAKE A SPLASH
Anthony Lopez, Montgomery Whitewater's raft guide manager, has already logged multiple hours on the water and calls the outdoor recreation and entertainment complex designer (and decorated competitive kayaker) Scott Shipley's newest work "distinct." He goes on to say, "The Adventure Channel has six significant angle changes — there are usually only two or three — and it really weaves and bends.”
This combined skill set has made Shipley the go-to designer for some of the world's most demanding whitewater design projects. He's also credited with innovations in the field, such as a patented Whitewater Terrain Park system that redefines whitewater recreation and a patented moveable obstacle system that is the world's first threedimensional modular obstacle allowing for complete reconfiguration of an existing whitewater park.

If you’re not from around here, some of the lingo you’ll read and hear at area restaurants may be confusing. Here’s a little dictionary to help decipher Southern food speak.
Meat & Three: Usually refers to more casual “home cooking” spots and means the menu offers a plate with your choice of one meat (fried chicken, country fried steak, fried catfish — sensing a pattern here?) and three sides, usually Southern-style vegetables like fried okra, fried green tomatoes, squash casserole, creamed corn, collard greens and more. Often served with cornbread or a biscuit.

334-230-9636 • wintzellsoysterhouse.com
Grits: A creamy, savory porridge-like dish made from ground hominy and often embellished with cheese. Shrimp & Grits is a favorite Dixie dish.
Sweet Tea: The default setting when you order a glass of iced-tea down here. And sweet means S-W-E-E-T. Specify “unsweet” if you don’t want any sugar. Or ask for half-and-half for just a little sweetness.

MAXWELL GUNTER MONTGOMERY
Maxwell Air Force Base’s 2017 air show was recognized as being the Best-of-the-Best by the International Council of Air Shows.
Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base have always been close partners, and the capital city is proud to have a military institution of such stature as part of its community. In 2015, the warm welcome and strong support that Montgomery has consistently provided to all who live and work at Maxwell earned the city a prestigious national award, the Altus Trophy. The recognition is presented annually to the city that has shown the most “outstanding support to an Air Education and Training Command base,” and Montgomery was chosen from many other cities for the distinction. The city has a long history of aviation excellence, starting back in 1910, when the famous “fathers of flight,” the Wright brothers, chose Montgomery as the spot for their first civilian flying school. That same site would later become Maxwell Air Force Base. Through the years, city leaders and everyday citizens have reached out to Maxwell by holding events like Military Appreciation Week and Military Night at Biscuits baseball games. In addition, The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce includes a Military Support Council that regularly holds events like “Eggs and Issues” breakfast meetings that allow military representatives and city and state leaders to gather and discuss important issues.

THE TOWN OF PIKE ROAD GOOD NEIGHBORS
A quintessential Alabama “hometown,” the Town of Pike Road welcomes all to experience its well-blended mix of old and new.
”
Our motto is 'Welcome Home,’ these words exemplify the spirit of this town and the feeling we try to convey to everyone who comes here to visit or stay.
CONNECTED & COMMUNITY-FOCUSED Situated in eastern Montgomery County, the Town of Pike Road is a perfect snapshot of small-town life, offering pastoral scenery and a more leisurely pace that feels a whole world away, yet is only minutes from all that the neighboring capital city offers. This combination gives the town a personality all its own, and residents invite everyone to come see what makes it special. The Town of Pike Road is relatively young, just 25 years after its incorporation in 1997. As a growing municipality, the town offers everything a community needs — including a bright future. However, despite its youth as a municipality, the Town of Pike Road includes historic communities that have thrived in the area for over 200 years. Designated the fastest-growing municipality in Alabama for the past two decades, the town’s mission statement Planning for Progress while Maintaining Character is evident in both its peaceful, hometown feel and energetic, fresh ideas. The town’s sprawling meadows and woodland glens are dotted with over 70 unique neighborhoods, each with its own personality and including some of the region’s oldest settlements. The population of nearly 10,000 residents is diverse, with citizens across the demographic spectrum calling the Town of Pike Road home.

EXPLORE THE RIVER REGION
PLANNING FOR PROGRESS
G
Its ability to attract such a variety of people is proof of Pike Road’s appeal. Yet, perhaps the town’s greatest asset is its commitment to preserving the past while planning wisely for the future. Small family farms and equestrian facilities maintain the town’s ties to its agricultural roots, and as new businesses and energetic neighborhoods come to the area, this creates a harmonious mix of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Since its incorporation, the Town of Pike Road has expanded to a new crossroads – near the intersection of Pike and Vaughn Road. This town center is home to Town Hall and a variety of bustling businesses and restaurants, ranging from small and locally-owned to the new Publix that opened in 2021. Similar town centers are planned for historic community areas across the town, each with a unique investment such as a cultural or entrepreneurial center that will provide opportunities for citizens now and in the future. To ensure continued prosperity, the Town of Pike Road encourages citizen input and thoughtful planning to determine its direction. Town leadership and staff continuously evaluate both opportunities and needs of the growing municipality. One major priority has now been realized: In December 2010, the town established a public school system. Over the past decade, Pike Road Schools has celebrated several graduating classes and grown to serve over 2,700 students. The town is looking forward to the construction of a new high school on the horizon.
CULTIVATING QUALITY OF LIFE A focus on quality of life keeps citizens connected as the town experiences exciting population growth. The ENHANCE initiative, created in the early days of the town to meet the interests expressed by the community, forms a roadmap for tailor-made quality of life programs. The work of volunteer-led groups like the Pike Road Arts Council, Agriculture & Stewardship Club, and Business Association provide opportunities for the community to connect, learn, and grow together. The Town of Pike Road is proud to provide a home for these interests with the recent creators of the Pike Road Arts Center on Wallahatchie Road and the Agriculture, Recreation & Performing Arts Park across town on Trotman Road. Amidst a constant array of art shows and workshops, the Pike Road Arts Council’s Plein Air Paint Out, an outdoor painting event hosted each October, brings together more artists than nearly any other in Alabama. The Park includes an open-air arena and community education space, and a multi-use ball field complex opened this year to welcome local players. Future plans include other educational and agricultural amenities, as well as an amphitheater. Through the Business Association, the Town offers opportunities for businesses of all sizes to benefit from multiple topics, including digital marketing and the possibilities of entrepreneurship. With partners including Troy University Continuing Education & Outreach, the Auburn University Government & Economic Development Institute, and local businesses, 2023’s Business Association offerings will connect our business leaders with the knowledge-based opportunities of tomorrow, inspiring and encouraging business growth and success.
In addition to the continually expanding programming provided by the Town’s ENHANCE initiative, additional recreation amenities are on the horizon. Future projects in the Town include tennis courts, an amphitheater, and more. As part of a commitment to expand natural resource amenities, the Town continues to develop its parks and the Natural Trail system, a pedestrian-friendly opportunity to get outside and connect with neighbors.
ART, AGRICULTURE, AND EVERYTHING ELSE There is something for everyone in the Town of Pike Road, whether it’s getting your hands into the dirt or on to a paint brush. The ENHANCE initiative, created in the early days of the town to meet the interests expressed by the community, forms a roadmap for tailor-made quality of life programs. The work of volunteer-led groups like the Pike Road Arts Council and Agriculture & Stewardship Club provide opportunities for the community to connect, learn, and grow together. The Park includes an open-air arena and community education space, and construction continues on a multi-use ball field complex. Future plans include other educational and agricultural amenities, as well as an amphitheater. Also designed with community in mind, the Town of Pike Road Natural Trail System provides opportunities for walking, jogging, horseback riding, and trail cycling as it connects both historic communities and emerging neighborhoods. Portions of the Natural Trail currently run alongside Marler, Meriwether, and Wallahatchie Roads, with trailhead facilities providing parking, restrooms, and picnic space at both ends of Marler Road. Once completed, the Natural Trail will span over 30 miles as it highlights the beauty of the town’s rural landscapes.

PLAY & STAY
The City of Wetumpka is located in Elmore County, the third-fastest growing county in the state. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, along the banks of the Coosa River, Wetumpka is appropriately known as the “City of Natural Beauty.” And while its abundance of small-town charm offers a leisurely lifestyle, it’s also strategically located only 10 miles north of Montgomery between U.S. Highway 231 and Interstate 65. Come see why this lovely spot is a great place to visit and to live.
”
Welcome to Wetumpka. Known for our heritage, hospitality and scenic landscapes, we’ve got something for everyone, and we’re happy to share it all with you. Jerry Willis, Mayor, Wetumpka, AL
HISTORY & HERITAGE Wetumpka is proud of its rich history and has the preserved sites and attractions to prove it. • Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Park offers visitors exhibits and living-history events that trace the site’s 600 years of history. The park also hosts a 39-site campground overlooking the Coosa River. • The Elmore County Historical Museum preserves and displays Wetumpka’s eventful past for future generations. • The Museum of Black History’s permanent collections promote the ingenuity, creativity, cultural and political expressions of Elmore County’s black community. • Historic home tours are offered throughout the year, as are historic cemetery tours.
hiking trails for the outdoor enthusiast. • The Swayback Bridge Trail Coosa draws mountain bikers and runners from around the country with its single track full of tight technical sections and steep climbs. • The Wetumpka Riverwalk begs folks to come stroll along the banks of the Coosa River and enjoy Wetumpka’s natural resources. The trail leads to the newly constructed Sports Complex. • The scenic Coosa River (that runs right through town) and local lakes offer some of the best fishing in the state with abundant populations of bass, crappie and catfish. The Gold Star Park boat landing and State boat landing are both located on the Coosa for easy access. • Kayaking and canoeing the rushing rapids of the Coosa make for some fast-paced fun. Class II and III rapids appeal to paddlers from near and far. Several area businesses rent boats and other equipment. • Lake Jordan is one of the state’s premier bass-fishing lakes, earning it a spot on the popular Alabama Bass Trail. • The Piedmont Birding Trail includes two prime viewing locations at Gold Star Park and Ft. Toulouse-Fort Jackson with a surprising variety of habitats that make them a bird watcher’s dream.
• Downtown Wetumpka is listed as part of the “National Register of Historic Places,” and sites to see include the 1931 court house, the distinctive Bibb Graves Bridge, three antebellum churches and several historic homes.
EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS Thanks to a six-mile stretch of whitewater rapids, hiking and mountainbiking trails, welcoming parks and clean, clear lakes, Wetumpka is also a haven for outdoor recreation lovers. • Wetumpka has an abundance of walking trails and recreational biking/ FOR INFORMATION 800-240-9452

Wetumpka is home to one of only two marine impact craters in the United States. The still-visible, fivemile-wide “astrobleme” was created when a meteorite collided with earth, blasting through bedrock and soil in Wetumpka 84 million years ago. The tilted rocks in and along the Coosa River are evidence of the event.
CREATIVITY & CULTURE The city boasts strong support of the arts, and there’s always something to see. • The Wetumpka Depot Players is a renowned community theatre performing original plays and Broadway favorites.
IN THE SWING Golfers can see if their play is up to par on Wetumpka’s Emerald Mountain Golf Club.
GAME ON On the edge of the Coosa River, Wind Creek Wetumpka features an 85,000-squarefoot gaming floor with 2,500 games. The luxurious, five-star hotel has 283 rooms with spectacular views of the city. The gift shop is full of great finds, and there are several delicious dining options. Don’t miss the 16-gallon shark tank!
WHO KNEW? Wetumpka’s idyllic charm has captured Hollywood’s eye three times. Its picturesque downtown area served as part of the setting for the movies “The Grass Harp” (1995), “The Rosa Parks Story” (2002) and “Big Fish” (2003).
• The Kelly Fitzpatrick Memorial Gallery honors the prestigious painter from Elmore County and promotes the arts by exhibiting the works of local artists. • The Rumbling Waters Studio and Gallery, located inside the oldest business building in Wetumpka, showcases one-of-a-kind woodworking art and offers classes and private lessons for both beginners and advanced woodcarvers. • The Alabama River Region Art Center is committed to stimulating individual creative expression and appreciation of the visual, performing and culinary arts by providing high-quality, affordable programs.
FIT FOR KIDS Wetumpka’s welcoming parks are the perfect places for kids to unwind. Fain Park, located on the western banks of the Coosa River, offers a playground and the riverwalk. Gold Star Park is also located along the banks of the Coosa River and offers stunning scenery, a walking trail, a playground, a boat landing and a stop on the Piedmont Birding Trail. If you’re searching for charm, history and natural beauty combined, Wetumpka’s the place for you.

Millbrook is full of wonderful gems that make our community unique and interesting. Be sure to stop by next time you are in the area. Al Kelley, Mayor
A Proud History With a rich heritage dating back to the 1700s, the Millbrook area, including Robinson Springs, Coosada, Deatsville and Elmore, was known for such prominent leaders as Bolling Hall, William Wyatt Bibb, John Archer Elmore and Benjamin Fitzpatrick. The first pioneer home built in present day Millbrook was known as Ellerslie, constructed in 1818 by Bolling Hall, a well-known statesman and planter of that time. Hall’s home still stands and is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Mardi Gras Celebration
Memorial Day Observance
Between World War I and World War II, the communities of Millbrook, Coosada, and Robinson Springs, later referred to as the Tri-Community, began to evolve and grow, adding schools, churches and rail transportation. Contributing to the population growth during this era were unfortunate outbreaks of diseases in the more populated city of Montgomery. As a result, Millbrook became a place to retreat during the long, hot summers. Soon, the seasonal population began to stay year round.

Thriving Community Incorporated in 1977, Millbrook is a growing Interstate 65 city, strategically located just ten miles north of Montgomery, the capital of Alabama. Known as the western gateway to Elmore County, the City is easily accessed at Interstate 65 exits 176, 179 and 181. Alabama Highways 14 and 143 are also key corridors in the city where retail and commercial development continues to thrive. A variety of housing options are available to those who want to enjoy the best of two worlds — small city comforts plus urban conveniencescreating a relaxing way of life underpinned by a genuine sense of community.

Today, the area retains the best of its early features and natural resources, while aggressively pursuing economic development opportunities. Millbrook has experienced a more than 40 percent increase in its population in the last 20 years, and this influx of new residents has spurred unprecedented residential building, which in turn has attracted new commercial development that keeps gaining momentum. The great outdoors plays a prominent role in Millbrook’s quality of life, with six well-equipped and maintained public parks that provide recreational options for all ages. A new mega sports complex, called 17 Springs, is currently under development that will transform the Highway 14 corridor and position the city as a regional draw and destination point. Other outdoor activities can be enjoyed at nearby Lakes Martin and Jordan, the Alabama River, the Alabama Nature Center and the Grandview YMCA. The City will continue to capitalize on these recreational opportunities.
