99 Things TO LOVE in Montgomery
The things to love in Montgomery are many and varied, and while we can’t possibly list them all, here are 99 really good ones.
9. A POWERFUL PULPIT: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spread his message of love and peaceful protest at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. 10. WORLD-CHANGING EVENTS: The modern Civil Rights Movement began here, and the Selma-to Montgomery march that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act ended at the capitol building’s steps.
24. IMPORTANT PEEPS: You know a place is great when the governor lives there. Of course, since we’re the state capital, he kinda has to, but still.

25. STATELY STYLE: The Gov’s mansion also has a pool in the shape of Alabama. ‘Nuff said.

26. TOTES GOATS: The capitol building sits on the summit of Goat Hill, formerly a place for goat herds to graze before it became the focal point of government in our state. Don’t miss the Goat Hill Gift Shop, packed with Alabama-made items.
13. HALLOWED GROUND: Discover the inspiring architecture of the city’s oldest churches.
DISCOVER OUR STORY 1. A BIG BIRTHDAY: In 2019, Montgomery will be 200 years old. 2. FABULOUS FIRSTS: Montgomery had the country’s first electric streetcar system, called the Lightning Route. 5. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, golden couple of the Jazz Age and famous authors, lived (drank!) and wrote in the capital city. 7. CROONER’S CADDY: See the car in which country music superstar Hank Williams took his final ride at The Hank Williams Museum. 8. A SERIOUS SIT: Rosa Parks, Mother of the Modern Civil Rights Movement, defied the law and refused to give her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the rider movement.

ONE FINAL BITE: Chris’ Hot Dogs, located on historic Dexter Avenue, has been a part of the city’s rich heritage, for 99 years, since opening in 1917. Drop in, order a dog “all the way” and enjoy a tasty tradition. At the beginning of the 20th century, Chris Katechis left his home in Greece to make a life in America. He made his way south to Montgomery and opened a fruit stand in his new home, where he also sold hot dogs, on a corner of Dexter Avenue downtown in 1917. “It was little more than a lean-to against the side of the existing building,” Costas “Gus” Katechis, Chris’ grandson, explained. The original name for the establishment was Post Office Café, but as it became evident that his hot dogs, smothered in a thin, spicy and tangy red sauce, were more popular than the produce, Chris changed the name to reflect what had become the focal point of the restaurant. Almost a century later, Chris’ Hot Dogs is still owned and operated by the Katechis family, and if its booth-lined walls could talk, they’d have some interesting tales to tell. Hollywood starlets, country music icons, literary luminaries, political power players and even U.S. presidents have made their way to Chris’ in the last 10 decades. “FDR came through Montgomery on a train many times, on his way to and from his place in Warm Springs, Ga.,” Gus said. “Every time, he’d

BURNING HOT HUNKS: Scores of super-fit firemen descend on the capital city each year to compete in the Firefighter World Combat Challenge. Hubba, hubba! And then there’s …
send porters to get him a box of our hot dogs.” Presidents Harry Truman and Ronald Regan have both stopped by for a dog or two, and George H. Bush got a box to go. And a young Hank Williams ate there often, sitting at the counter and writing song lyrics on paper napkins. They were no doubt all drawn to the small, unassuming spot by the secret hot dog sauce, just one component topping Chris’ most-ordered item, a hot dog “all the way.” “It has mustard, freshchopped onions, kraut and the chili sauce,” Gus said. And what’s in that famous sauce? “I’ll never tell,” Gus said. “The recipe isn’t even written down anywhere.”
Now Gus is keeping the tradition alive, modernizing operations some, but leaving the really important things alone, including the sauce. “It’s what we’re known for, and it’s been the same for almost 100 years. We’re not messing with that!” he said.

For a bite of Montgomery and a mouthful of history, grab a few napkins and get your hands around a hot dog from Chris’ Hot Dogs on Dexter Avenue. This legendary diner marked by the green-and-white-striped awning opened on May 1, 1917. It’s now being run by the second and third generations of its founding family. Mugshots
If you’re craving a burger so good it’s won multiple awards, then head over to the Mugshots Grill & Bar. Start things off with an order of tangy fried pickles. Then get ready for the main attraction, Mugshots’ signature dish: The Come-Back Burger. It’s a seasoned beef patty rocked with A-1 Steak Sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and the joint’s tangy homemade “comeback” sauce, served on a toasted bun with beer-battered fries. 334-277-1682 • mugshotsgrillandbar.com
Speak Southern?
IF YOU’RE NOT FROM AROUND HERE, SOME OF THE LINGO YOU’LL READ AND HEAR AT AREA RESTAURANTS MAY BE CONFUSING. HERE’S A LITTLE DICTIONARY TO HELP DECIPHER SOUTHERN FOOD SPEAK.
Meat & Three: Usually refers to more casual “home cooking” spots and means the menu offers a plate with your choice of one meat (fried chicken, country fried steak, fried catfish — sensing a pattern here?) and three sides, usually Southern-style vegetables like fried okra, fried green tomatoes, squash casserole, creamed corn, collard greens (see definition below) and more. Often served with cornbread or biscuit. Grits: A creamy, savory porridge-like dish made from ground hominy and often embellished with cheese. Shrimp & Grits is a favorite Dixie dish. Sweet Tea: The default setting when you order a glass of iced-tea down here. And sweet means S-W-E-E-T. Specify “unsweet” if you don’t want any sugar. Or ask for half-and-half for just a little sweetness. Collard Greens: Collards are leafy green veggies that are packed full of vitamins. They’re most often slow-cooked for hours with some kind of pork fat for flavoring. Look for a glass bottle with little green peppers in vinegar on your table; it’s pepper sauce, and it’s meant to be sprinkled on your collards.
Dreamland
End your quest for the perfect ‘cue at Dreamland BBQ downtown, famous for its succulent ribs and delicious sauce. Feel free to ”pig out” on some pork, but save a little room for dessert since Dreamland’s signature dish is its Banana Pudding. It’s made fresh daily with all the right stuff—vanilla wafers, ripe bananas, fluffy whipped cream and creamy pudding—plus a secret ingredient that puts it over the top. Dreamland also offers the largest draft beer selection in central Alabama and has outside dining. D 334-273-7427 • dreamlandbbq.com

Montgomery native Chef Todd Batey is the owner of La Jolla and one of several chefs thrilling guests at his restaurant with flavorful dishes plated with flair and served by friendly staff. He got interested in cooking while in college and finds inspiration in Mother Nature’s bounty, particularly the abundance of fresh veggies, herbs and other products available in the River Region. A consistent commitment to quality from Batey and his team makes the dining experience at La Jolla something special, as he explained. “We have a great staff and always use quality ingredients,” he said. “We make people happy, and that is what cooking is all about.”

ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS HAVE SOME FUN ON FOOT
Enjoy Montgomery’s mild climate by exploring the city’s varied nightlife on foot. Two walkable districts make it easy and fun to pop in and out of several spots without putting down your drink. Downtown The Downtown Entertainment District stretches from the Riverfront to Irish Bred Pub at the corner of Dexter Avenue and Perry Street. Cloverdale Cloverdale offers two exciting Entertainment Districts. One encompasses several blocks on Fairview Ave from 1048 Jazz & Blues to El Rey and everything in between. The other, on Cloverdale Road, includes The A&P Social, Derk’s Filet & Vine, Pine Bar and Vintage Year.

BAMA
BEER BOOM ALABAMA CRAFT BEER IS HOPPING Thanks to recently loosened liquor laws, Alabama’s craft beer industry has been hopping for the last few years. There are currently 24 locally owned micro-breweries spread across the state, with several more in the works. The capital city is a great place to imbibe some of these Alabama-fashioned favorites: lagers, stouts, IPAs and more, including those from our hometown brewery, Railyard Brewing Co., which pulled into Montgomery in 2012 and has been delighting hopheads and casual beer drinkers ever since. Railyard Brewing Company: Montgomery’s only brewery produces several beers that stay on tap, like its Y’all Alabama Light Lager, Alabama Pale Ale and its Red Clay Irish Ale, and it creates seasonal beers too. So there’s always something new to try, especially for members of its Mug Club. You can join for $15 and get a personalized glass mug with your member number etched on the bottom. The mug stays at Railyard, and anytime you order, you get 20 ounces of your chosen brew poured into your mug for the price of 16 ounces. Drink This: The Y’all Alabama Light Lager is a refreshing 100-percent malt beer with a medium body and a smooth balance of German Hops. Good People Brewing Co.: It was founded in 2008 by two friends who got heavy into home-brewing, but since 2010, Good People has been turning out its “ales from the heart of Dixie” in the shell of a former beer distribution warehouse in downtown Birmingham. Drink This: Snake Handler is a double IPA that gets its big and bold flavor from a blend of five hop varieties. Back Forty Beer Company: Back Forty began brewing in 2009, but Gadsden native and founder Jason Wilson moved his company to his hometown in late 2011. It’s now turning out bottle after bottle and can upon can of award-winning beer in a 1940s-era brick
building, once a Sears & Roebuck appliance repair center, on the edge of downtown. Drink This: Back Forty’s claim to fame is the silver medal its Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale won at the “Olympics of beer,” the Great American Beer Festival, in 2010. Straight to Ale: Since 2009, art and science have come together to create some amazing brews at Straight to Ale Brewing in Huntsville. Drink This: Monkeynaut IPA was named after Miss Baker, the monkey launched into space in 1959 and who lived at Huntsville’s U.S. Space & Rocket Center. All of Straight to Ale’s beers pay homage to Huntsville’s space heritage. Avondale Brewing: In Avondale, one of Birmingham’s oldest areas, Avondale Brewing opened in 2011.The 120-year-old building that houses the brewery has several past lives: It was once a fire station, a pharmacy, a bank and a brothel. “Miss Fancy” on Avondale’s logo was a beer-guzzling circus elephant who once lived in Birmingham. Drink This: The Spring Street Saison is crisp and clean and brewed using open fermentation tanks.

As its name implies, the Montgomery River Region is an area full of rivers. Some are lazy, others fast flowing, but this confluence of water in Central Alabama has formed a section of the state that is known for many things. Encompassing everything from the natural beauty and rustic feel of rural landscapes and agricultural industries to high-tech manufacturing facilities, the seat of state government and a major Air Force base, the River Region is composed of several distinct communities, all boasting rich histories and exciting futures on the horizon. The River Region’s communities include: Montgomery, Prattville, Millbrook, the Town of Pike Road, Wetumpka, Tuskegee and Tallassee. The region is growing quickly and is currently home to over 366,000 people. Discover the abundant opportunities that make them great places to live, work or visit.

The River Region got its name thanks to two major rivers, The Coosa and The Tallapoosa, joining to form The Alabama River just north of the capital city. The Alabama River runs alongside downtown Montgomery and continues south where it forms the Mobile and Tenasaw rivers, which finally empty into Mobile Bay. Visit visitingmontgomery.com for more details.

COMMUNITY
THE TOWN OF PIKE ROAD GOOD NEIGHBORS A QUINTESSENTIAL ALABAMA “HOMETOWN,” THE TOWN OF PIKE ROAD WELCOMES ALL TO EXPERIENCE ITS WELL-BLENDED MIX OF OLD AND NEW.
Connected & Community-Focused Nestled nicely into the eastern part of Montgomery County, the Town of Pike Road is a perfect snapshot of small-town life, offering pastoral scenery and a more leisurely pace that feels a whole world away, yet is only minutes from opportunities offered by neighboring cities. The Town of Pike Road recently celebrated its 18th birthday, and a lot has changed since the town was incorporated as a municipality in 1997. However, one thing remains the same: its mission. “Planning for the future while preserving our character,” are more than words on paper. This mission statement is lived out daily and put into practice by Mayor Gordon Stone and other town leaders. Pike Road’s character, according to many residents, is what makes the town special. What began as a community with a little more than 200 people has now prospered into a thriving town. Its sprawling meadows and woodland glens are dotted with more than 40 unique neighborhoods, each with its own personality and including some of the region’s oldest settlements. Today’s population of approximately 8,000 residents is diverse, with citizens across the demographic spectrum calling the Town of Pike Road home. With all this growth, maintaining its unique character remains as fundamental as it was when the town began, as Mayor Stone explained. “We’ve listened to the people from day one and stayed true to what is important to them.”

Who Knew? The Town of Pike Road has been named the fastest growing municipality in the State of Alabama for the past three consecutive years.
Kids Come First More than 200 meetings and thousands of heartfelt conversations with residents helped establish the four pillars that drive the Town’s progress: quality of life, public service, planning and education. While each of these pillars is equally important, the education component played a significant role in 2015 as the long journey of establishing of public school system came to fruition. A longtime dream became a reality on August 13, 2015, when the doors opened to the Pike Road School System. More than 1,000 students were welcomed to their community school.
Who Knew? The Pike Road School System is one of the only schools in the State of Alabama using project-based learning to educate students. Advanced technology combined with hands-on learning is giving students the ability to think, innovate and create and preparing them for the real world
Who Knew? In honor of the Town’s 18th birthday, leaders unveiled a mural wall project that will illustrate the history of Pike Road. This 60 x 12 foot mural was erected in the Town’s historical district behind the original Town Hall. The entire community was invited to paint the foundation on the wall, “making their mark” on history. A local artist then painted historical scenes that help tell the story of Pike Road. This mural is also part of the Alabama 200, the state’s Bicentennial celebration.
The first campus of the school system houses kindergarten through eighth grade students, who live within the municipal limits of Pike Road. A grade will be added each year, with the first senior class of Pike Road School System set to graduate in the spring of 2020. Properties throughout the town are already being renovated and plans are in the works to develop these additional campuses. Students and parents are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to experience excellence in public education.
A Prosperous Present Its ability to attract such a variety of people is proof of its appeal, and perhaps the Town’s biggest asset is its commitment to preserving the past while planning wisely for the future. Small family farms and equestrian facilities maintain the Town’s ties to its agricultural roots, as new businesses and new neighborhoods come to the area, creating a harmonious mix of yesterday and today. “Our motto is ‘welcome home,’ and these words exemplify the spirit of this town and the feeling we try to convey to everyone who visits,” said Mayor Gordon Stone.
The Future is Bright Since incorporation, the Town of Pike Road has come grown and evolved. “Pike Road is a special place. Our unique municipal model is built on great partnerships, strong volunteers, dedicated staff and an engaged group of residents,” said Mayor Stone. The Town has now completed the first two phases of a Natural Trails System that highlights the beauty of its rural landscape and will also be used as an educational tool to connect neighbors, family and friends. When complete, the system will use four different “trailheads” to connect more than 30 miles of land. Each one of these will focus on a different educational component and tie back into the history of Pike Road.
Who Knew? Pike Road is home to Alabama’s Mother of the Year for the past two years. Residents Patty Payne and Charlene Rabren earned the title in 2014 and 2015.

SELMA THE OLD SOUTH WITH A NEW ATTITUDE
IN SELMA, HISTORY LIVES ON EVERY CORNER, AND WHILE THE CITY IS ANCHORED BY ITS PAST, IT’S FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE, CELEBRATING HERITAGE, ARCHITECTURE, ARTS AND CULTURE WITH YOU Civil War As a major manufacturer of military resources and munitions for the Confederate cause, Selma was at the center of some of the Civil War’s most contested struggles. Evidence of the role the city played in the Civil War can still be seen and felt today at several historic sites. The Old Depot Museum offers visitors a tour through the colorful past of Selma, with a particular focus on Selma’s place in the Civil War. A cameo of Elodie Todd Dawson, Abraham Lincoln’s sisterin-law and a rabid confederate, offers a poignant reminder that the Civil War split many families asunder. Confederate bills, many printed in Selma, recall “the lost cause” in all its frailty. Selma’s crucial role as one of the South’s largest munitions producers is highlighted with exhibits of shells and cannon balls that visitors can both see and touch. As a sister museum to Selma’s National Voting Rights Museum, the Ancient Africa, Enslavement, and Civil War Museum’s permanent
and temporary exhibits invite you to explore and reflect upon one of the most controversial and compelling periods of our country’s history. This museum offers, by appointment only, an educational perspective of the Civil War and slavery with provocative, yet balanced, displays, many of which are interactive. Serving as a Confederate Hospital, the Vaughan-Smitherman Museum was spared by Federal General J.H. Wilson when his troops ravished Selma in early April 1865. It is now home to the Art Lewis Collection of Documents and includes a pardon signed by President Abraham Lincoln just four days before his assassination. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Old Live Oak Cemetery tells multiple stories through its headstones and monuments, many of which mark the final resting place of Civil War soldiers. The Confederate Monument is in the cemetery’s Memorial Circle and honors fallen Confederate soldiers, including the 155 who were moved from other cemeteries to Old Live Oak. Many other prominent Selmians are interred at this beautiful spot as well.

Civil Rights After decades of oppression, it took years of peaceful protest in the face of violent opposition to finally achieve voting rights for African Americans. Much of the Civil Rights struggle took place in and around Selma, including one of its seminal moments, the Selma to Montgomery March. In 1965, hundreds of voting rights advocates, both black and white, set off on foot to Montgomery and the Capitol Building to take their grievances to Governor George Wallace’s doorstep. On March 7, 1965, 600 people marched toward Montgomery. After just six blocks, when they crossed the now infamous Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River, mounted deputies and state troopers dispatched by Governor Wallace attacked the group with nightsticks and tear gas, injuring dozens. The event came to be known as “Bloody Sunday.” The violence stopped the marchers’ first attempt, but they would not be stopped for good. Two weeks later, under the protection of Alabama National Guardsmen and Army troops, a court-ordered limit of 300 marchers led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. set off again from Selma and marched along U.S. Hwy. 80 to the steps of the State Capitol. Soon after, President Lyndon Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act on August 6. In Selma, walk in the footsteps of the brave men and women who fought for equal rights by visiting historic sites including the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail, the Selma Interpretive Center, the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the National Voting Rights Museum.
Architecture Much can be learned about the character and heritage of a place simply by looking at its architecture. This is certainly true in Selma; it is one of the few towns in the United States with so much impressive architectural variety in such a small area. Many of the over 1,200 historic structures you can observe boast architectural significance that go far beyond the stories of the families who lived in them. Indeed, the city’s homes, buildings, churches and other structures reveal its rich past in every arch, window, column and deep porch. VISITOR GUIDE selmaalabama.com Take the city’s Walking Tour to discover its multi-layered history as seen in its wide array of architectural styles.
Arts “Art for All” could be the motto of the Selma Art Guild, a local group that runs the city’s only permanent art gallery showcasing the talents of area artists. The Guild welcomes you to see and enjoy paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, fiber arts and more for free, as the gallery never charges admission. Founded in 2003, ArtsRevive’s mission is to: “enhance community development in the greater historic Selma region through the development of arts, urban design and tourism while preserving the diverse cultural heritage of the region.” One of ArtsRevive’s major projects is the transformation of the old Carneal Auto building downtown into the ArtsRevive Center, a space for offices, art shows, art workshops and other community events.

PRATTVILLE WHERE EVERYONE MATTERS ONE OF ALABAMA’S FIRST “PLANNED COMMUNITIES,” PRATTVILLE IS PROUD OF ITS PAST AND ENJOYING ITS PRESENT — LOOKING AHEAD TO EVEN BETTER TIMES
Just 13 miles north of Montgomery, Prattville is a city with multiple personalities that work together to create a place that’s earned itself the name “the Preferred Community.” The city was modeled after a New England village, yet has all the hospitality and warmth indicative of its deep-South locale. Although ranked as one of the fastest growing areas in Alabama, Prattville maintains a quaint charm, and its close-knit, small-town atmosphere belies the many metropolitan opportunities and modern amenities offered. It’s a harmonious marriage of seeming opposites that’s made its residents swell with hometown pride and eager to welcome everyone to their special spot in Central Alabama’s River Region.
”
Our neighborly feel and sense of place make Prattville such a great city to live in or just to visit. Patty Vanderwal, President, Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce
A History of Industry In 1818, Autauga County was established a full year before Alabama even became a state. The area got its big boost when in 1835, the city’s namesake, New Hampshire native and industrialist Daniel Pratt, bought nearly 2,000 acres at the fall line of Autauga Creek, the area that is now downtown Prattville. Pratt established a town and began manufacturing his cotton gins, and his company quickly became the foremost producer of cotton gins in the world. Pratt is widely considered “Alabama’s First Industrialist,” and as his enterprises prospered, so did Prattville. In 1866, Prattville became the county seat, and Pratt was unanimously elected the town’s first mayor. From these humble beginnings, Prattville is home to almost 35,000 people today.
80 UPCOMING EVENTS VISITINGMONTGOMERY.COM
Sights to See Prattville’s second nickname is “The Fountain City,” thanks to its many artesian wells. Some have been capped, but there are plenty still offering up gallons of sweet, clear, mineral-rich water, and a few allow citizens and visitors to fill containers and take the water home. Find public artesian wells throughout the historic downtown area including one at the corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets. It is history that’s flowing free at the Prattaugan Museum/Heritage Center. This circa 1840 Greek Revival home contains numerous interesting artifacts from the Pratt Family. There’s also a public artesian well at this site. Efforts to preserve heritage in the form of old homes and other structures resulted in the creation of Old Prattvillage. Another preserved architectural treasure is Buena Vista, a circa 1830 structure on the National Register of Historic Places. Legend has it that Andrew Jackson patterned the staircase at his home The Hermitage after visiting Buena Vista. To fully explore the Prattville area’s natural beauty, Wilderness Park is a must-see. Giant oriental bamboo plants soar 60 feet to form a canopy in the sky. On the banks of the Alabama River, Cooter’s Pond Park features two boat ramps, docks, a riverwalk and pavilions. A popular, and usually productive, fishing hole by the same name abuts the park. Another place that begs a visit is Prattville’s huge Bass Pro Shop, an outdoor enthusiast’s dream-come-true, with cascading waterfalls, fish aquariums, a restaurant, fudge shop and retail space galore.
Downtown Delights The Daniel Pratt Historic District in downtown has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. Pratt’s careful planning resulted in a pleasing and efficient layout of manufacturing, retail businesses, churches, schools and residences. The rest of downtown retains much of this same feel and has been reinvigorated in recent years, now boasting locally owned shops and boutiques, restaurants and more.
The Creekwalk is nestled along the banks of Autauga Creek and winds through a portion of the historic downtown area. Heritage Park offers a great view of Pratt’s dream showcased in the Autauga Creek Dam and the Pratt Manufacturing Complex, which is still in operation today as Continental Eagle.
The Grass Is Greener
VISITOR GUIDE prattvilleal.gov World-class golf is played on the rolling fairways and picture-perfect greens at Prattville’s Capitol Hill, the crown jewel of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. A state-of-the-art conference center and hotel, Prattville Marriott at Capitol Hill offers excellent amenities for business groups and individuals. The Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic golf tournament, brings in over 50,000 people to the area each year.
Looking Ahead “There is no shortage of pride when we talk about Prattville,” Vanderwal said. “Combine our rich history, our quality of life and our focus on the future, and it all adds up to success. We are a community that is moving forward, and the best is yet to come.” Photos provided by Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce and Journal Communications

Who Knew?
Star-Fall
Wetumpka’s idyllic charm has captured Hollywood’s eye three times. Its picturesque downtown area served as part of the setting for the movies “The Grass Harp” (1995), “The Rosa Parks Story” (2002) and “Big Fish” (2003).
Wetumpka is home to one of only two marine impact craters in the United States. The still-visible, five-milewide “astrobleme” was created when a meteorite collided with earth, blasting through bedrock and soil in Wetumpka 84 million years ago. The tilted rocks in and along the Coosa River are evidence of the event.

Montgomery
COMMUNITY
PROUD PARTNERS
MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE CONTRIBUTES MUCH TO MONTGOMERY, AND THE CAPITAL CITY WELCOMES MEMBERS OF THE MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES TO THE COMMUNITY.
A little over a century ago, man conquered the laws of gravity. In 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made the dream of flight a reality when their bi-plane soared above the sands in Kittyhawk, North Carolina, for 12 seconds, covering 120 feet. After many more flights going longer and farther, on March 26, 1910, the brothers established the nation’s first civilian flying school in Montgomery at Wright Field, and the first powered flight in Alabama took place. Though the Wright’s school lasted only a short time, it set the stage for exciting things to come in Montgomery, most notably the establishment of Maxwell Air Force Base at the very same place that witnessed the state’s first flight. In the early 1930s, the Army Air Corps Tactical School moved to Maxwell Field, and Montgomery became the country’s intellectual center for airpower education. Now, Air University at MaxwellGunter Air Force Base continues to educate tomorrow’s planners and leaders in air, space and cyberspace power for the Air Force, as well as other branches of the U.S. armed forces, federal government civilians and international organizations. Ever since Maxwell-Gunter AFB located to the capital city, a beneficial relationship has flourished, a true partnership that benefits those stationed at the base as well as Montgomery and River Region residents. Base personnel contribute to the local economy simply by being here — Maxwell-Gunter AFB has an estimated annual economic impact of approximately $1.5 billion on the River Region, and that number is growing. Most of them go a step further though, donating their time and talents to give back to the community. Also thanks to the presence of the base, Montgomery has grown to
become a hub of military aviation advancements and information technology. Montgomery is happy to have the base and everyone associated with it here and shows its appreciation in various ways including the work of The Wright Flyers, an organization of The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce dedicated to furthering the spirit of cooperation and support. Today, the relationship between Montgomery and Maxwell-Gunter AFB continues to grow and strengthen, benefiting both.

Make Jackson your hospital. Learn more at jackson.org
Know why so many folks in the River Region call Jackson Hospital “my hospital”? Because we’re practicing some of the most innovative medicine in the area. Not only have we established one of the Southeast’s most advanced robotic surgery centers, and received national certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, we’re also the first hospital in Alabama to be certified by the Joint Commission for both heart attack treatment and spine surgery. Yet as proud as we are of our technology, it’s our dedication to providing compassionate healthcare that makes our neighbors choose Jackson Hospital again and again.

Cool Place To Live Considering a permanent move to Montgomery? Relocating in the capital city is a smart move for businesses, families and everyone in between. Here are just a few reasons why:
Education. Montgomery boasts some of the strongest public schools in the country, recently garnering high national praise. According to U.S. News & World Report, Montgomery’s Loveless Academic Magnet Program has been named the #1 High School in Alabama and the 18th Best High School in America. Booker T. Washington Magnet High School ranked third in the state, while Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School ranked fifth. There’s a variety of great private school options available as well.
Arts & Culture. Montgomery is home to Alabama’s state theatre, the world-renowned Alabama Shakespeare Festival. This state-ofthe-art theatre puts on Broadway favorites, dramatic classics, new works by Southern writers and children’s plays in addition to Shakespeare. The Montgomery Symphony, chamber music organizations and more will delight music lovers, and several dance troupes, including the Alabama Dance Theatre, thrill audiences with ticketed and free performances each year. Recreation & Lifestyle. Montgomery offers multiple active pursuits. For kids, baseball, basketball and soccer leagues for all ages offer competition and fun. Biking, running and even rowing clubs are always looking for
new members. The Alabama River is a part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail that draws paddlers from all over, and opportunities for mountain biking and whitewater paddling are abundant in nearby Wetumpka. Downtown Montgomery is a great place to play too. It’s hopping with nightlife and fabulous dining as are other areas of the city, including historic and charming Old Cloverdale. Diversity. Maxwell Air Force Base and Korean companies like Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama continue to bring in a steady influx of new U.S. and international residents, creating a diverse community that welcomes all. Smart Neighborhoods. The City of Montgomery adheres to the Smart Code (a zoning and planning code that encourages sustainability, walkability and mixed-use for development) in its public spaces. Several neighborhoods, including Hampstead and The Waters, have also taken these concepts to heart. Plus, Montgomery is ranked in the “Top 100 Places to Raise a Family”. For community information, contact the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, 334-834-5200.

Around Montgomery has more than enough attractions and events to entice you during your stay with us, but if you want to really experience the city, explore our diverse neighborhoods. Each has its own personality and offerings, so dive in and do as the locals do.
DOWNTOWN WEST SIDE Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base is located here and plays a major role in the city’s economy and culture. It was once the site of the country’s first private aviation school, founded and run by the Wright Brothers, the famous “Fathers of Flight.” While you can’t visit the base, you can check out some of the nearby spots where airmen from around the country and the world like to unwind. Stop by Gateway Park for a round of golf or just a stroll through the green spaces.

While You’re Here: Down a delicious hot dog and follow it with a sweet (and cheap!) cupcake at That’s My Dog at 232 West Jeff Davis Street. Check its facebook page to find the daily “phrase that pays.” If you say it when you go, you’ll get a free treat.
While You’re Here: Take a sunset stroll along Riverwalk, which hosts Second Saturdays and numerous events throughout the year. Have a cocktail alfresco at SandBAR, sitting high on a bluff overlooking the Alabama River. Walk to The Alley to find dinner options ranging from Mexican (Jalapeno’s) or Asian (Wasabi) to Italian (SaZa’s), as well as Gulf Coast seafood specialties (Wintzell’s Oyster House), farm-to-table food in a casually upscale atmosphere (Central) and good ole Alabama barbecue (Dreamland). With a full belly, stroll to a nightlife hot spot and keep the evening going. Feeling hip? Hit the AlleyBAR. In the mood to sit outside and have a relaxed drink? Snag a table on The Exchange’s patio. Still up at midnight? Visit Sous la Terre for some smooth jazz sounds. While You’re Here: Take a sunset stroll along the Riverwalk, which hosts Second Saturday and numerous events throughout the year.
Town
CLOVERDALE & MIDTOWN Some of the city’s oldest and prettiest homes occupy the wide, treelined streets of the lovely and historic Cloverdale, a neighborhood dotted with shaded parks. Shop, sip and sample delicious cuisine in the A&P area, home to locally owned boutiques like WelleStudio, Pine Bar (the capital city’s version of “Cheers”), as well as Kudzu Noodle Bar, which puts a Southern twist on Asian favorites, and The A&P Social, where Chef Miguel Figeroa adds his creativity to the finest locally sourced ingredients. Adjacent to Cloverdale, Midtown is smack in the middle of Montgomery, with Zelda Place (named for one half of Montgomery’s legendary literary couple, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald), a spot where shopping and dining options abound. Fill up at Midtown Pizza Kitchen on some of the area’s tastiest salads, sandwiches and pizzas. While You’re Here: Indulge in a hearty Southern breakfast at Derk’s Filet & Vine, down the street from A&P, before popping into the Stonehenge Gallery on Fairview to find a wide variety of works from local artists.
THE BOULEVARD The Boulevard makes a loop around the city and divides downtown, Cloverdale and Midtown from the East Side. Here you’ll find two of Montgomery’s cultural gems: The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and The Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the official state theatre that annually puts on worldrenowned productions of the Bard’s best works as well as more contemporary plays and family favorites. They both reside in the 350-acre Blount Cultural Park, a green space inspired by English moors, that includes a paved trail for walking, running or biking as well as an enclosed dog park. While You’re Here: Grab some food to go and head over to Blount Cultural Park for a picnic. Walk the trail, fly a kite, feed the ducks and swans around one of the park’s lakes or just soak up the fresh air.
EAST SIDE East Montgomery is home to newer house communities as well as The Shoppes at EastChase, an outdoor mall packed with popular national retailers. Visit Hampstead for lunch at The Tipping Point, a laid-back spot that’s part coffee shop, part restaurant and becomes an easy-going bar and hangout at night. It has a big grass hill and play area to keep kids happy while parents relax. Then head further east to check out the Town of Pike Road. This historic haven amid the fields and forests of the countryside offers a chance to explore this beautiful landscape on its Natural Trails System, four miles of interconnected, multi-use trails. While You’re Here: Join the crowds for a satisfying meal at Martha’s Place, a Montgomery institution dishing up comfort-food classics.
