43rd MONTGOMERY ART GUILD
MUSEUM EXHIBITION
Exhibition Catalogue On view June 1 through July 21, 2019 Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
From the Director The advent of each Montgomery Art Guild exhibition harkens back to the Museum’s earliest days, when a group of local artists mounted an exhibition at Women’s (now Huntingdon) College here in Montgomery. That exhibition’s warm reception enabled those artists to realize their dream of establishing a permanent space devoted to the display of Alabama artists, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Today, the Museum is still home to the art of many of the regional artists who first established it, and, since 1960, the Museum has hosted the biennial exhibition of works by some of the area’s most talented artists through the Montgomery Art Guild’s Museum Exhibition series. We welcome them back for the 43rd time this year! Of the 110 artists who submitted 334 works for inclusion, 72 works by 49 artists constitute this year’s exhibition. The exhibition juror, David Reyes, is to be applauded for his selection of works which, more than ever, reflects the breadth and depth of the lives and concerns of those who now call Montgomery and the River Region home. We also praise all of the artists— those whose work found a place in the exhibition and those whose work has been a better fit with past shows or will be a stronger match for those yet to come. Finally, we thank our lead sponsors, Laura and Barrie Harmon, and sponsors Margaret and Jimmy Lowder, Synovus Bank, and Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Harris, as well as the many award donors for their generous support of this exhibition. We are grateful for the good work of the 2018–2019 MAG Museum Exhibition Committee, co-chaired by Enid Probst and Alisa Koch. This exhibition—as well as inVisible, the attendant exhibition of works by featured artist Richard Mills—has arisen from a constellation of glimmering artists, MAG leaders, MMFA staff, sponsors, donors, and one lone juror! Again, we applaud their investment in and devotion to this longstanding cooperative effort of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and the Montgomery Art Guild. —Angie Dodson, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Director From the Director | 3
President's Statement This year marks the forty-third year that the Montgomery Art Guild and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts have joined forces to host this prestigious exhibition. The Montgomery Art Guild is deeply appreciative of this partnership, which is extraordinary and important to artists in our region. The venue could not be more beautiful. We offer heartfelt thanks to all those that helped make this event possible. There are many levels of support and involvement for an exhibition such as this. The exhibition would not be possible without the support of the City of Montgomery and Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Director Angie Dodson and her staff, especially Margaret Lynne Ausfeld and Sarah Graves, who made the planning and entry process run smoothly. We thank all the artists that entered the show and the juror, David Reyes, for his thoughtful selection of the final entries. This is a very competitive juried show, and because of the number of accomplished artists that enter, the selection process is not always easy. Special thanks is offered to our many sponsors and prize donors for their generosity and love of the arts, which help fan the flame of creativity for many artists. Lastly, thank you to Montgomery Art Guild committee members Alisa Koch, Chuck DiLaura, and Rick Mills for their hard work and dedication. Thanks to all those that attend the exhibition; come often, and bring your family and friends. —Enid Probst, Montgomery Art Guild President

From the Juror One of the great privileges and challenges of being a curator is jurying an art competition. It is an enjoyable opportunity to see the diverse and unique artistic expression in the world, but it also conveys a great responsibility to form a thoughtful and overall engaging exhibition. Naturally, I was honored when the Board of the Montgomery Art Guild asked me to be the juror for the 43rd Montgomery Art Guild Museum Exhibition. Upon my initial viewing of the 334 works submitted, I was immediately impressed with the high quality of works in all of the traditional disciplines—painting, drawing, sculpture, craft, printmaking, and photography. This made the task of choosing the 72 pieces to represent this strong pool of artists quite daunting. I viewed the online submissions repeatedly, allowing the exhibition to evolve over time. During those reviews I was able to form an impression not just of each artist’s personal vision and technical merits but also a sense of what motivates and informs the artistic community of Montgomery and the region as a whole. The works chosen represent many approaches in technique, form, and content as well as showcasing the varied communities from which they originated. Whenever I am selecting works for a show, I always have in the back of my mind formal issues of composition, line, texture, form, perspective, presentation, and a host of other academic concerns. More importantly, I respond to art on an intuitive, visceral level– does it spark something in me? And then, why? What I found were works that were technically accomplished, imaginative, curious, clever, humorous, heart-felt, and challenging. It was a pleasure to jury the 43rd Montgomery Art Guild Museum Exhibition. I hope my selections will highlight the accomplishments of each artist while also making connections that spark a dialogue among all works. —David Reyes, Exhibition Juror Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Huntsville Museum of Art
