STEP BY STEP PAINTING — $17

Join instructor Bev Bridges for instruction on how to paint a surprise painting step by step. Fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register or withdraw is Mar. 28.

WATERCOLOR CARDS- $15

BITES AND BUYS THE PINK CADILLAC

"Bites and Buys" is a delightful excursion that combines culinary exploration with retail therapy, allowing participants to savor diverse cuisines while indulging in a shopping stop along the way.

We will be enjoying The Pink Cadillac, with Elvis memorabilia, an old-fashioned jukebox, 12 flavors of ice cream, and classic diner food. Participants will be responsible for their own lunch. The deadline to register or withdraw is April 4.

PICK AND PAINT - $ PAY AT THE STORE

Apr. 16, 1 pm, Paint n’ Fun, Christiansburg Mall

Join us for a great afternoon of painting! Participants will pick out which piece they want and pay at the store for what they choose. Pre-registration is required so that we have a head count. Participants will meet at the store in the mall. The deadline to register is April 9.

ASHE COUNTY WILDFLOWER HIKE—$15

Apr. 17, 8 am 5 pm, Ashe County, NC

Get out and shake off the winter blues while we look for the first wildflowers popping up for the year along the South Fork of the New River. Lunch is on your own in downtown West Jefferson. After lunch take in the views from Mount Jefferson State Park. The deadline to register or withdraw is April 14.

AFTERNOON ADVENTURES - $10

Spend the afternoon with friends or make new friends. Each month we will be something different. The deadline to register or withdraw is April 11.

TRIAD SHRED A THON

Help prevent identity theft, shred unwanted documents, protect identifying information and clean out clutter! Please bring your documents in a box or plastic tote (no larger than 22.5x18x11.5") and respect the limit of three totes/boxes per vehicle. Items that cannot be shredded include: metal, three-ring binders, composition notebooks, hanging file folders, paint brushes, padlocks, hardback books, keys, eyeglasses, bungee cords,

etc. Please note that the Shred-A-Thon is a drivethru event; please do not get out of your car and approach the collection site, but rather stay in the line of vehicles for an event coordinator to approach you. NRV SENIOR GAMES

Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation will be the host agency for the 2024 New River Valley Senior Games will be held Sunday-Friday, April 28- May 3, 2024. The games are open to New River Valley residents 50 years of age and older. Through a multitude of athletic and social events, participants have the opportunity to display their athletic ability, in addition to exchanging and sharing common ties and interests with other senior individuals

Morels are America’s mushroom, more so than any other. It may be because they can be widespread, they’re easy to identify, and they come up in the spring, giving people a reason to get out and enjoy warm weather after a long winter. Or, it could be they’re popular simply because they taste so good.

CARVINS COVE KAYAKING - $30

We provide full instruction on how to navigate your own sit-on-top kayak in a safe environment on calm, clear water. The benefit of a Sit-on-Top kayak is the ease of maneuvering downstream combined with its stability and forgiving nature. We provide all gear, equipment, shuttle, and professional instruction. Lunch is provided lakeside. The deadline to register is May 8.

COMMUNITY CANCER SCREENING

May 17, 9 am 1 pm, Christiansburg Rec. Center

Educational booths will be available with information on cancer prevention and treatment for lung, breast, and colorectal cancers. Screenings for skin, head, neck, and oral cancers will also be onsite. Scheduling for mammograms with local hospital will also be available. Healthcare experts will be on site to answer cancer-related questions. Please note, no childcare services will be provided. Door prizes will also be given away.

GREENBRIER RIVER TRAIL HIKE– $10

May 21, 9 am 5 pm, West Virginia

The Greenbrier River trail is the longest trail of its kind in West Virginia. Spanning 64 miles along the beautiful Greenbrier River we will explore a two mile section of the trail. Lunch will be on your own in Lewisburg WV.

“I said I’d do it, and I’ve done it.” One fine spring day, Emma Gatewood, a 67-year-old mother and grandmother, told her children she was “going for a walk.” She failed to mention that her walk would be over 2,000 miles and take her through 14 states,

making her the first woman to solo through-hike the newly formed Appalachian Trail! Grandma Gatewood Took A Walk is a wildly theatrical adventure following Emma and all who played a part in her incredible journey. Participants are responsible for their own lunch in downtown Abingdon. The deadline to register or withdraw is October 30.

POTTERY CLASS $35

May 23, 1 pm, Paint n’ Fun, Uptown Christiansburg Join us for a 2 hour wheel class- you will learn how to center your clay on the wheel and create a bowl/vessel. Try it classes are great for all levels- Class includes instruction, demonstration and the basics for beginning to use the wheel. You will prepare your clay and learn to properly clean and care for the wheel. Please dress for a mess and bring a towel for your lap.

Firing your piece is NOT included in the $35 price- This is a true TRY IT Class. You can make as many pieces as you like in the allotted time - There is a $20 firing/glazing fee for each piece. This fee includes firing to bisque, return visit to glaze, and the glaze firing.

This craft kit features felt floral pieces that look like spring flowers in bloom and the word, “hello,” in pretty, scripted letters. Have fun assembling this sign and then hang it on a front door or wall to brighten your home decorations.

UNDERGROUND COAL TOUR—$30

June 4, 8:30 am 5 pm, Beckley, WVa

At the Exhibition Coal Mine, participants will ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and tasks of past and present day miners. In addition to the Mine, one can tour the Mine Museum and the period coal camp situated throughout the grounds. Participants will be responsible for their own lunch. The deadline to register or withdraw is May 21st.

NEW RIVER RAFT FLOAT - $35

June 5, 9 am 5 pm, New River, VA

What better way to explore the New River Valley than a raft float down the river. This trip is designed as a laid back, relaxing float with some exciting class II+ rapids thrown in that will bring you right into nature. Bring your camera because there will be plenty of opportunities for that special shot. All equipment is provided along with dry bags, PFDs, paddles and paddling jackets. We will provide river side lunch for one of the best picnics you've ever had.

Daring and exuberantly entertaining, ‘Cabaret’ immerses you in the lively yet dark world of 1920s Berlin as it transitions toward the Third Reich. The story follows a young American writer, Cliff, who falls for the English singer Sally Bowles, while the boarding house owner, Fräulein Schneider, embarks on a tentative romance with a Jewish fruit seller, Herr Schultz. This iconic musical, with 14 Tony Awards to its name, features unforgettable songs like ‘Willkommen’ and ‘Cabaret,’ providing a gripping glimpse into a society on the cusp of change. DRIFT AND DINE - $25

Some say the evenings are the best time to be on the water. This trip will take us down a short threemile class I, II section where we will experience all the New River has to offer. At the end of the trip we will dine at The Palisades, a local hotspot for evening entertainment and contemporary cuisine in a countryside setting. The Palisades is located in the former Payne's General Store in Eggleston. Participants are responsible for their meal cost. All equipment is provided along with dry bags, personal flotation devices, paddles, and paddling jackets.

The beautiful Snow White is forced to flee her home when the wicked queen’s jealousy threatens her life. Lost in the woods, Snow White is soon befriended by

seven dwarves who welcome her into their home. When the queen learns that Snow White is still alive and vows revenge, it takes the love of a handsome hero and the courage of her newfound friends to save the day. The deadline to register or withdraw is June 24.

SENIOR CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

The Christiansburg Police Department, Christiansburg Recreation Department and Christiansburg/Montgomery Triad S.A.L.T Council are now accepting applications for the 2017 Senior Citizen’s Police Academy. Interested applicants may contact the Christiansburg Police Department to obtain an application or applications can be picked up at Christiansburg Recreation Center. All applications are subject for review and approval. This is a FREE program open to any citizen 50 years and older. Some say the evenings are the best time to be on the water. This trip will take us down a short three-mile class I, II section where we will experience all the New River has to offer. At the end of the trip we will dine at The Palisades, a local hotspot for evening entertainment and contemporary cuisine in a countryside setting. The Palisades is located in the former Payne's General Store in Eggleston. Participants are responsible for their meal cost. All equipment is provided along with dry bags, personal flotation devices, paddles, and paddling jackets.

If you love being out on the river on our rafting programs, but want a little more freedom controlling your own craft, then the Sit-On-Top kayak program is perfect for you!

Take in the sights and sounds of water splashing around you. We provide full instruction on how to navigate your own sit-on-top kayak in a safe environment on calm clear water. We teach you the proper paddle strokes to navigate your boat. All equipment is provided.
