“REMARKABLE” SAYS CULTURAL GROUP AFTER CELEBRATING 50 YEARS Sunday afternoon on February 28, over 200 people entered the clubhouse of the German Hungarians to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Cultural Group. About a year ago, the event committee began meeting to discuss how we wanted to go about celebrating this historic event. The committee consisted of: Marlene Fricker, (Chairman), Janet Malofiy, Susi Hartmann, Lisa Fricker, Karen David, Werner Fricker, Jr, Werner Fricker III, Michael Fricker, Michael Wagner, Alex Blank, Cindy Proll, John Reiter, Joe Reiter, and Nichole Deely. At the event itself, friends and family gathered from near and far and reminisced about old times. There was a twohour cocktail party so that everyone could mingle and reunite with old friends! The Introduction to the evening was made by the Chairman of the Cultural Group, Susi Hartmann. One of the highlights of the evening happened immediately after the magnificent Heimatklänge played the star spangled banner. All individuals who were participants of the Cultural Group; who
were present this evening, were invited to participate in an “Einmarsch with Auftanz”. It was remarkable! Every single person on that dance floor had a smile from ear to ear as the fun dance was performed with young and old, new and current participants. The event committee decided on creating a commemorative book to capture and begin to document the Cultural Group history. The book committee consisted of: Michael Fricker, Werner Fricker Jr., Michael Wagner, and Karina Fricker. The historical section of the book was written by Werner Fricker Jr., Michael Fricker, and Joseph S. Reiter. The rest of the book was filled with ads from members, clubs, and friends near and far. Some of the photos shown in the book compared old and new dance group photographs with the same dance being performed, then and now! Each person attending received a copy of the commemorative book. The dancers began preparing in midDecember under the guidance (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

—SOCCER SHORTS— SOCCER CELEBRATION Saturday, February 26 marked the annual Soccer Celebration with the German Hungarians! It was a night to celebrate with our youth and adult soccer players, coaches, family, and friends. President Janet Malofiy graciously welcomed all who attended to celebrate the night and enjoy the food, drink and entertainment! Andy Weyershaeuser welcomed Ryan Richter from the Bethlehem Steel, he was our speaker and guest of honor to our players. Ryan gave an eloquent and thought provoking speech about “Believing in yourself and having your Coach believe in you and you’ll succeed” – words to which we can all relate and encourage our young athletes to understand. We would like to make a special mention to the Major Division Team for attending the Celebration, as this event is for all members on all teams who are German Hungarians and wear their uniform proudly! We will reserve a front table for you next year! There were many prizes to be won valued over $3,000 in total - (Aaron Roth was a very lucky winner that night!) along with 3 other youth players who won training sessions with German Hungarian’s own Brian Blesi, Ike Onyeador and a Philadelphia Union player. Ryan Richter ponied up a training session on demand which became the hot ticket of the night! As soon as the weather breaks we will get those sessions scheduled. Winners be sure to contact Cindy Proll at clproll@verizon.net to have your winning sessions scheduled. Andy Weyershaeuser announced all of the teams in attendance and their merits for the year. Coach Andy presented the Hammers with their trophy for ICSL fall season championship. The results of the PK fundraiser last fall was announced, by Matthew Proll. Six new aluminum benches will be installed during the spring clean-up day and a beautiful new sign will be added at the entrance of the soccer field. Coach Andy congratulated Matthew on his efforts to help support field improvements. It was a great time had by all German Hungarians. Be sure not to miss it next year as there are a lot of fun ideas in store! We would like to say thank you to all of the volunteers that helped put this event together, all of our members and our coaches who supported the banquet this year and be sure to keep checking back to the website and the Monthly Progress for the next upcoming event! Come support our club and soccer program! We are all members and this is YOUR Club!
FROM THE BENCH Coach Brandon Beaumont is leading what is called a “turnaround year” for his team U-10 Boys, White Lightning. In the Fall, the team went to Shady Brook Farms for the Halloween Fest. The boys were talking a big game on the way in, however, changed their minds when they encountered a few monsters! That said, Brandon doesn’t let his team be scared of monsters on the soccer field! His patient, yet consistent approach toward training is paying off for his team as they have launched into the finals at SMG indoor and then the team will be launching right into Spring training. All of the boys are the “most improved player” and should all be commended on their growth this past year. Coach Brandon called them all “amazing right now” so there is a lot to be proud of these developing German Hungarians! The White Lightning will only get a 2-week rest before they are back at it! Don’t forget tryouts are right around the corner. Check the website for the date and times. Oh, what a night... One filled with culture, dancing, celebration, family, friends and fifty years of accomplishments for the United German Hungarian Cultural Group. It was truly an honor to be part of the festivities... From reminiscing with friends both old and new, to enjoying 20 years of Kirchweih memories projecting on a movie screen throughout the evening, while watching on in excitement as the next generation of Schuhplattler dancers stepped on to the dance floor to entertain a packed house in the Grand Ballroom. The evening encompassed all the aspects of the rich culture and history that the United German Hungarian Cultural Group and Club continues to preserve within their family centered traditions while honoring their past and looking ahead to their future!! It truly was an honor to celebrate this milestone with all of you! Best wishes on another 50 years! Thank you!! Jennifer O’Farrell (former Cultural Group member)

The 50th anniversary was a fun and exciting Sunday afternoon. It was good to see so many faces that don't come around the club very often. It was also good to see families and friends gather to celebrate all the achievements our cultural group has accomplished over the years. Seeing a hall full of people with the same love for the cultural group and everything it stands for was very heart warming. Michelle Paul (Cultural Group member)
I wanted to say what a nice time I had yesterday at the reunion.... brought back so many memories and it was just a wonderful day.... thanks to all who put it together and I look forward to coming back.... great day. John Weber (former Cultural Group member)
Celebrating 50 years at the United German Hungarian Club, it was such a great feeling to celebrate the wonderful events, friends and lifelong relationships that have been created over the past 50 years at the UGH. The UGH was always a place of unrestrained happiness, dancing, drinking and a home cooked meal. The UGH dancers lit up the Club house like it was a late summer's day in September. music, and laughter filled the air, everyone’s spirit was lifted as we met people from the past and stared in amazement how the young ones grew up so much. How they dance so well… My awesome Cousin Rolf has not changed one bit, maybe lost a little hair. I’m happy to have a cousin that supports me as well as he has the last 45 years of my life it’s great to be part of the UGH family. Thank you UGH for such a memorable time… Tibor Puskas (former Cultural Group member)
I felt the love tonight, Bill and I had a GREAT, GREAT TIME. Thank you for all the hard work that goes into making an affair like this a heartfelt one. Heidi Ryder (member of the German Hungarian dancers and friends)
Fond memories and a really fun occasion, reuniting with friends at the 50th anniversary of the Cultural Group. An excellent job for all those who organized. Michael Pokorni (former Cultural Group member)
My family and I have had countless wonderful times at "our" club, but this past Sunday as the Cultural Group celebrated their 50th anniversary was one that was truly special. Our Mom, Antonia Kreutzer was one of the founders of the cultural group and that was without a doubt one of her truly proudest accomplishments. To have the honor of marching into the clubhouse with all the other former members of our dance groups was something that brought tears to my eyes (as did many other moments on this special day). The best part was that my brother Robert was my partner! It was also very special that we sat with our life long UGH friends at the table that our parents enjoyed many years celebrating numerous special occasions. I thank all the wonderful members who took time out of their lives to make the 50th anniversary of our cultural group a day that I will forever cherish. Ruth Kreutzer Herbert (daughter of past president, Karl Kreutzer)
What a wonderful event. Honored to participate in the celebration. Great time, people, dance and food. It was great to see an organization celebrate such a great achievement and add to its history. We especially enjoyed the vibrant dances and youth upholding the traditions started by their forefathers…. or in this case their foremothers. Bayern Verein Newark Members
I thoroughly enjoyed the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Cultural Group. These young people did an amazing job on all their performances. Every dance was unique and perfectly choreographed. The Hungarian czardas had people up from their seats giving a standing ovation. I enjoyed hearing about the history of this group from their early beginnings in 1965 to the present. What was impressive was how many are still with the group after 30 plus years. They start as soon as they can walk and learn as they grow up. They compete and won at many Gaufests, were marching in München at the Octoberfest, and performed in Germany, And never miss a Landestreffen, where they represent Philadelphia well. What's more is you can see they enjoy dancing. They are dancing even when they don't have to perform. I wish them 50 and plus more years to keep up our traditions. They are our future. Thanks for an enjoyable afternoon. Roswitha Hoenisch (member of the Philadelphia Donauschwaben)

As the newest member of the Cultural Group, I am honored to participate in a tradition that has been passed down for generations. For me, the 50th Anniversary Celebration embodied so much of what it means to be a proud American of German descent: reverence and gratitude for the sacrifices and tireless efforts of our ancestors, the continuation of cultural customs and traditions, and the coming together of young and old in joyful commemoration. Thanks to all who worked to make this event a success. Your dedication to the preservation of our heritage is to be commended! Nellie Smith (Cultural Group member and Miss German-America Philadelphia)
It was nice to spend an evening reflecting on the wonderful times and achievements we shared with so many people over the past 50 years. As our grandparents watched us perform back in the mid sixties, we watched our grandchildren perform with great admiration that they too had the opportunity to carry on such fine traditions. Betty and Michael Wagner (former Cultural Group members) What a pleasure it was to be at the 50th Anniversary celebration of our Cultural Group. We had a great time and enjoyed the festivities. I get a lump in my throat when I see our Cultural Group dance and keep up their ancestor’s traditions, thanks to the three lovely ladies that had the foresight to start this Cultural Group 50 years ago. I wish them many more years of dancing, having fun and the friendships they share. Leny Ammann (Club Member) |

Whenever I see young people pouring their heart and soul into something meaningful and worthwhile it always reminds me of the best things in life. When what they are doing is keeping our culture alive, well, the effect is that much greater. Such was the case in late February at 50th anniversary celebration of the UGH Cultural Group. What a fine event! From the youngest dancers to the most experienced, the members of the United German Hungarians performed with such spirit and enthusiasm that I couldn’t help but break into a big smile and applaud as loud as I could. The youth have an energy and optimism that perhaps only those of us from the oldest generation can truly appreciate and enjoy. It’s clear the last chapter of the history of our people will have to wait to be written as this current crop of young people here at the UGH and in clubs around the country are as devoted and as serious about our German heritage as any I’ve ever seen. More importantly, it appears they are having a really good time too! It’s hard to pick just one but the dance that probably stands out the most that evening was the Hungarian Czardas. The catchy melody and the steady rise in tempo gave the performance a unique and exciting quality. The dancers did a great job and the big crowd loved it. All in all it was a most enjoyable evening. Good food and drink, excellent music and dance, all mixed together with a wonderful sense of Gemütlichkeit. Congratulations and “vergelt’s Gott” to the cultural group on their 50th and to everyone involved in making the event special. Eva Martini (proud grandmother of a Cultural Group member)
It was an absolutely fun event and I am glad I was able to attend. The Aufmarsch was the highlight. As you watched the Alumni and current members enter the hall and then circle the floor you could see the pride in everyone's face that they are part of a great cultural group with a solid future. The fact that everyone was in step was also impressive. Fred Gauss (Vice President of Philadelphia Donauschwaben)
In 1965, Emily Fricker, Antonia Kreutzer and Emma Mueller had a vision to begin a dance group to honor our German Hungarian tradition! In 1965, I was an original member and I am here now celebrating “50” years of this cultural tradition. Where did the time go? As I walked around the club reminiscing with old friends and partners, I had visions of our mothers and grandmothers preparing our costumes for the next event, gathering in the basement to dress in our Kirchweih Trachts, the aroma of Rosemarien, and let us not forget the green felt lederhosen! The highlight for me was the invitation to be included in the Grand March with the current members of the group. The music of the Heimatklänge and holding hands with old partners made me feel young again! The current dance group, generations of past members, did a tremendous job honoring our treasured dances. In particular “the Czardas”. They performed with passion and energy as the excitement radiated throughout the club! I am both thankful and grateful to those women for having the vision to begin the cultural group in celebrating our customs and traditions. A special thanks to Marlene Fricker and President Janet Fricker Malofiy and the committee members for this special celebration. Thank you for the memories and “Gemütlichkeit!”

—‘CULTURAL GROUP 50’ CONTINUED— of Susi Hartmann and Marlene Fricker. Cultural group committee members worked together to decide which dances would appropriately showcase all the aspects of dance and culture that we represent today. It was decided that the children’s group would perform a well-known favorite, “Kinder Polka.” Then, the cultural group would join them on the floor for “Come Let Us Be Joyful.” These two dances were one of four of the first dances taught by the Cultural Group founders Emily Fricker, Antonia Kreutzer, and Emma Mueller back in 1965. In a quote from Marlene Fricker, “It was the Folk Dance piece that remains the core of our existence: and everyone should know that Emily Fricker, Antonia Kreutzer and Emma Mueller carved out a path in those early years. That path still reflects those choices in what we dance, and what we wear”.
The Schuhplattler selection that evening was our rendition of a medley of plattler melodies that were recorded by the Heimatklänge in the early 70s, Landler Potpourri. The Lüneburger Windmüller is a folk dance that Susi Hartmann found and has been performed many times at the Donauschwaben Landesverband. The next dance performed was the Czardas. This dance is a special favorite of the dancers and I can see why. The rhythmic beat and musical speed of the music stirred the audience emotionally. I looked around the room and saw many excited faces and the group received a standing ovation when the dance was done.
Last but not least was the Western Medley.
