FROM THE ARCH IVES OF OUR SPORT CLUB Introduction Presenting a complete chronicle of our fifty years in the field of sport is an impossibility, since over the years many earlier records and other data were either lost or discarded, and in many cases accounts of events and persons involved during our formative years were not even chronicled. This unfortunate situation persisted for many years, and it was only during the comparatively later years of our activities that a small number of our members took it upon themselves to maintain ac counts of our activities and progress. Because of this confused state of affairs, it was decided to divide our fifty years of existence into five decades, and entrust the research of each of these periods to a person or persons who probably was most knowledgeable in that particular area. Accordingly, John Mayersfeld was selected for the first decade since he was probably the prime mover and the guiding spirit in the organization of our first Sport Section. Ted Kereczmann and Rudy Rack were drafted for the second decade, since both are “history buffs” and maintain personal files con cerning our Club’s activities and development. The third ten years be came the responsibility of John Jacoby and Frank Foilmer, who were deeply involved in our activities during the Forties. John Blank, Werner Fricker and Jimmy Pack were tapped for a report on the Fifties, a per iod during which important organizational and administrative changes took place in our athietic structure procedures in which these men our Golden Years was en took a leading part. The final decade trusted to our ace chronicler, Club Secretary Karl Kreutzer, who has a remarkable affinity for details, and maintains almost impeccable records of all occurrences relating to our participation in the sports arena. The final task of collating all this material and presenting it in a logical and sequential form was assigned to a three-man committee Werner Fricker, Ted Kereczmann and Rudy Rack who have proven in the past their ability to work together on this type of undertaking. We hope the result is satisfactory and gratifying, and in case someone feels that a name or event has been omitted, we beg you to remember that so many persons were involved in our fifty years of growth that it is physically impossible to mention all of them, but you can rest as sured that their contributions are greatly appreciated. —

still continued their tireless efforts as co-Managers of the soccer team, which got off toa good start during the 1953-54 season. However, Uncle Sam was still stretching out his long arm for “cannon fodder,” and the resultant loss of a number of our players to the armed forces seriously crippled our team. An additional setback was suff&redwhen Erhart Boess, one of the mainstays of the team, received a broken leg in a game with Allentown and was out for the balance of the season. Sometime during the 19 53-54 season the Sport Club decided that it would no longer pay any of the soccer team’s expenses, since none of the players were participating in the Sport Club’s social activities. These social affairs were conducted primarily to raise money for the soccer teams, even though a majority of the Sport Club members were in terested in cultural activities and not in sports. In order to meet this crisis, some of our soccer afficionados such as Frank Follmer, John Piatka, John Weber, Mike Lambert, Adam Weber, etc., met at Ted Kereczmann’s “TW” Tavern and organized the “Old Timers,” with the following officers: Frank Foilmer, President; Adam Weber, Secretary; Mike Lambert, Treasurer. Their sole aim, which was faithfully and suc cessfully carried out, was to raise money to maintain the soccer teams. The advent of the 1954-55 season saw the possibility of our not hav ing a League entrant because of a dearth of interested players. Visualiz ing the possible loss of our League affiliation, John Piatka and John Weber put on their recruiting boots and together with Henry Birken heuer tramped through the wilds of Hunting Park night after night speaking to such young fellows as John Blank, Mike and Frank Betsch, Steve and Florian Kempf, et al. Either Piatka, Weber and Birkenheuer were very smooth talkers (a talent which no one has cared to disclose recently) or else they wielded very heavy clubs, for the result of their First efforts was not ONE team but TWO! Plus a new manager for the team Henry Birkenheuer. The Second Team, under the management of Eli Boros, won the Championship of the League’s Second Division, but the decision was protested by the Ramblers. Since the protest was never decided, the Championship remained in limbo. Among the players on this Second Team was an aggressive young man who did much to mold the team into championship calibre. This man naturally advanced to the front ranks and played on our Major teams for fifteen consecutive years, serving as Captain during many of those years. He also achieved United States Olympic status, developed into one of our administrative top-notchers, and today, after having hung up his cleats, serves us as President of the United German-Hungarians. In this year of 1972, when our Club is celebrating its Fiftieth Anni versary in the field of amateur sport, we can all proudly look back upon those fifty years of participation. Particularly rewarding were the ten years between 1960 and 1970. In 1959 our Club’s ascendancy in the field of amateur soccer started on the rise, and reached its climax with the winning of the United States Amateur Soccer Championship in 1965. Such an achievement was actually far beyond our fondest dreams until our “Cinderella” team of

Under the new format of the Sport Club, a Soccer Committee was formed in 1961 with John Piatka as Chairman. Karl Kreutzer took over the Chairmanship in 1963 and held the position through 1967.
