UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS OF PHILADELPHIA G VICINITY 4666 Bristol Road, Oakford, PA

Welcome to our 80th Anniversary Saturday, March 31, 1990

A Brief History of the United German Hungarians The BANATER MAENNERCHOR was founded in 1910 by a group of German ethnics from the Banat region of Hungary. They were soon accepted into the United Workers’ Singing Societies of the North-Eastern States. They grew swiftly and were able to purchase a site at Eighth & Columbia which remained their home” unitl 1923 when a property at 2007-12 North Second Street was acquired. A Children’s and a Women’s choral groups were also formed and various singing groups functioned successfully until the late 1940’s. In 1922, the Banater Athletic Club was organized. Even in the early years the soccer teams made great strides. Gym, baseball, boxing, bowling, softball, and recently golf were introduced. Soccer, however, has remained the major sport. Over the years our Senior and Youth teams won championships at local, state, regional, and national levels. Club members have been active at all levels of the game and we have been hosts to regional and national championship finals. In 1939, after a failed merger of all German Hungarian clubs, we decided to change our name to THE UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS OF PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY. In 1962 we said farewell to our “city” club and our “country” club which we had acquired in 1946. became our permanent home. Our present clubhouse in Oakford, Bensalem Township, was completed in 1965. on February 4, 1973, a destructive fire ravished our clubhouse. Thanks to our energetic President and a large group of dedicated members who sacrificed many days and nights of hard work, we were opened almost three months to the day of the disastrous fire. Dance has always been important in our social and cultural activities. Throughout the years those in charge of the entertainment and social activities of our club, have endeavored to bring to our members, not only all available ethnic music and performers but also whatever was popular in that era. Our traditional Kirchweih Dances were performed from our founding, but, it was the youth of our Sport Club who began performing various German, Austrian, and Hungarian Dances. In 1965, our present Cultural Group was officially formed and this group performs both ethnic and contemporary dances. Throughout the years, many have contributed in various ways to make our club successful. No matter how great or how small, each contribution has been important. We thank the people of the past! We welcome those of the future! They will work and spend time together following the fine example of those who have preceeded them and continue the excellent traditions of THE UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS OF PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY.

John Blank, President

THE GERMAN HUNGARIANS DANCERS The German Hungarian Dancers are the senior dance group of our club. They perform at A Night in Vienna, the Friday Night Kirchweih Show, the Anniversary Banquet and the Christmas Celebration. They also perform at other non-club activities. Most of them are also members of our Schuhplatter Group. Their success has been due primarily to the talent, energy, and hard work of their instructor, Marlene Blank. Marlenes ability to choreograph and direct people has enabled the group to perform at a high amateur level. This group has made us laugh and they have made us cry. They have made us very proud as we watched them grow from teenagers to responsible men and women. Bravo for a job well done!

The Kirchweihfest Im Osten liegt em dort wogten rings die weiten Felder, in seiner Sommer

Each year in September, we proudly present our customs and traditions to the entire community. Our delicious foods and our unique traditions are the focal point of our festival. Naturally as in all ethnic groups, we are first and foremost Americans. But, we are very unique Americans. We eat speck and brot, paprikasch, and mond kuche along with our hamburgers and cheese steaks. We dance waltzes and polkas along with our rock and roll. We listen to the songs of Heino and Freddy along with Neil Diamond and Bruce Springsteen. And once a year we celebrate our beloved festival KIRCHWEIH. The opening night on Friday, features a delicious dinner buffet of typical German Hungarian delicacies, appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The event is officially opend with the entrance of our Kirchweih Couples wearing the Banater Swabian ‘Thacht or various other German costumes depicting the activities of our Cultural Group. A show is always the high point of the evening. On Saturday and Sunday, our tent is filled with people singing and dancing to the music of the various bands, eating the delicious foods, or enjoying the performance of our dance groups or guest performers. For the soccer fan, there is always a league game or our Old Timers Team may play another local club. The children can enjoy pony rides, clowns, or magicians. The spirit of camaraderie fills the air and we know that all the time, work, and effort given to make this event a success, is worthwhile. In 1982 we realized that a change was needed in our Kirchweihfestival format. Our Cultural Group was approached by the Kirchweih Chairman and told that it would be financially necessary to do our own show. Needless to say, the group was apprehensive, but with much encouragement their first “Musical Revue” was conceived. Although this show was meager in comparision to future productions, the number “Rock and Roll Revue” was a preview of things to come. Almost immediately after this show, people came forward stating that they were willing to help put on a more elaborate, well planned production. Thus began the yearly productions that we have enjoyed throughout the years. -

The Kirchweihfest

(continued)

Many of the young men and women who have performed for us throughout the years, serve dual roles taking on jobs in all phases of our festival. They share much together, not only as a community of club members, but also as friends and family. They are a unique blend of the old and the new and we are very proud of them. On September 15, 1989, for their eighth performance, they presented a musical revue entitled “The Living Years”. This revue represented their accomplishments over the years accomplishments that exceeded any expectations they had when they began in 1982. The people in the theme song, “The Living Years”, put off until tomorrow what they should have done today. Our group knows that they have not done this. They have lived these years with honesty, integrity, and worked very hard. Their reward has been love and friendship, and a sense of accomplishment. They have honored the ideals, customs, and traditions of their parents while forming new traditions. They have lived “The Living Years.” As we enter the 1990’s, we realize that once again changes in our Kirchweih format will be necessary. What will they be? Join us on the weekend of September 14, 15, and 16 and you will see! .

Our Schuhplattler Group at Tanzfest with our friends: Auerhahn Schuhplattlers, Oley, PA; Germania Almrausch, Poughkeepsie. NY: GTV Almrausch, Philadelphia, PA; Alpenrose Schuhplatter Verein, Lancaster, PA: Enzian Volktanz Gruppe. Newark, Delaware.

The German Hungarian Schuhplattler Group In the late 1960’s our Cultural Group began performing Schuhplattler Dances under the direction of Andy Weyershaeuser. As their instructor, he instilled his love and knowledge of this dance form in the youth of our club. This eventually led to the official forming of our Schuhplattler Group in 1976. Since that time we have performed not only locally, but at various events and Octoberfests along the east coast. Since 1985 we have been regular performers at Vail, Colorado winning 3rd prize at the 4th of July Parade in 1988. In 1985 we attended our first Gaufest in Denver, Colorado as observers. In 1987 we participated in the Ehrentanz at the Gaufest in Milwaukee. Wisconsin. Our club was accepted in 1988 as a member of the Gauverband Nordamerika, Inc., an organization which preserves and perpetuates Bavarian and ‘Trrolian folk dancing, tracht. customs and culture, and in 1989 we participated in both the Ehrentanz and the Preisplattling at the 12th Gaufest held in Parsippany, NJ. As a member of the Gauverband, we have made many friends throughout the United States and Canada. We enjoy celebrating various events with our new friends and look forward to making lasting friendships amoung our fellow ‘plattlers.”

Our Schuhplattler Group at Gaufest XII A very happy and excited group assended on the Parsippany, NJ Hilton Hotel on Thursday and Friday. July 29 and July 30, 1989, as a total of 83 of our members and friends arrived to take part in the 12th Gaufest of the ‘Gauverband of Nordamerika. Inc. The host clubs for this event were Bayern Verein, Newark and Edeiweiss, Passaic. Our group met with friends from Auerhahn-Oley. Almrausch-Poughkeepsie. and Alpenvelichen-Maryland to discuss plans for a Hospitality Room, dubbed “The 12:01 Club” which the four groups would be hosting on Saturday Night. Various workshops were available and there was time for relaxing. A Heimatabend was held in the Grand Ballroom and approximately 30 clubs participated. The Shoemaker Dance was performed by our Children’s Group and our Schuhplattler Group performed the Maypole Dance followed by the Ambacher. On Saturday, 20 clubs competed in the Preisplattling. It was ajoy to watch all these marvelous groups. Our group was satisfied with their performance and the crowd gave them a rousing applause. Various affairs continued throughout the weekend: a banquet at the Aspen Restaurant for over 2000 people; the 12:01 Club; a Catholic Mass at the hotel; a picnic at Mennan Arena; and a farewell dance with a Hawaiian theme. On the way home, some joined in a trip to the Statue of Liberty in New York City. It was a great weekend! We are all looking forward to Gaufest XIII which will be held in Vancouver. British Columbia in 1991. -

A Special Event

-

July, 1988

In recent years both the Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association (EPSA) and the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) have hosted various regional and national soccer finals at our club. Certainly the largest undertaking was the EPYSA’s hosting the National Youth Challenge Cup Finals in July, 1988. At the same time the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) held their Annual General Meeting and 75th Anniversary Celebration at the Wyndam Franklin Plaza Hotel in Philadelphia. This group also held various activities at our club. The heat was sweltering but the United German Hungarians couldn’t have been prouder as soccer people from all over the United States came to our club to participate in the various activities held on the week of July 27th to 31st. Our entire property was in tip top shape and needless to say it was obvious that many volunteers had helped to achieve this. Our clubhouse also looked beautiful for the Welcome Dinner, the President’s Reception, the Philly Fest, and the Award Celebration. Balloons adorned the tables that were set on the dance floor in order to accomodate over 500 people who attended the inside activities. Outside over 2000 were roaming our grounds, watching the games, eating bratwurst and drinking a lot of sodas to quench their thirst. Our Schuhplattler Group performed at the President’s Reception and the German Hungarian Dancers entertained at the 75th Gala Banquet at the Franklin Plaza Hotel. They were throughly enjoyed by those who attended. One thousand people from various areas of the United States were emotionally stirred as the group performed “America Let’s Give It A ‘fry.” On Sunday both the GH Dancers and our Children’s Group were the half time entertainment for the final game. It had been a satisfying and successful event. Performing “The Red Silk”- 1986
