The United States of America The Star Spangled Banner
The Federal Republic Of Germany Das Deutschland Lied
Oh! say, can you see by the dawns early light What so proudly we haild at the twilights last gleaming?
Einigkeit und Rechi und Freiheit für das deutsche Vaterland!
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there Oh! say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free And the home of the brave! Francis Scott Keye
Canada
o Canada! O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command With glowing hears we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, 0 Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. O Canada, We stand on guard for thee! Music by Calixa Lavallée Text by Adolphe-Basile Routhier

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS The BANATER MAENNERCHOR was founded in Philadelphia in 1910 by a group of German ethnicsfrom the Banat region ofHungary. They grew swiftly and were able to purchase a site at Eight 6’ Columbia which remained their home until 1923 when a property at 2007-12 North Second Street was acquired. As members ofthe United Workers’ Singing Societies ofthe North Eastern States, various singing groupsfunctioned successfully until the late 1940s. In 1922 the Banater Athletic Club was organized. Even in the early years the soc cer teams made great strides and soccer has remained our major sport. Over the years our senior andyouth teams won championships at local, state, regional and nation al levels. Club members have been active at all levels ofthe game and we have been hosts to regional and national championshzp finals. In 1939 after a failed merger ofall German Hungarian clubs, we decided to change our name to THE UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS OF PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY In 1962 we said farewell to our city club and our country club which we had acquired in 1946, became ourpermanent home. Ourpresent clubhouse in Oakford, Bensalem Township was completed in 1965. At this time we also acquired a new constitution which created an atmosphere for all our groups to work together harmoniously. On February 4, 1973, a destructive fire ravished our clubhouse. Thanks to our energetic President and a large group ofdedicated members who sacrificed many days and nights ofhard work, we were opened almost three months to the day ofthe dis astrou.s fire. Dance has always been important in our social and cultural activities. Throughout the years those in charge ofthe entertainment and social activities ofour club, have endeavored to bring to our members, not only all available ethnic music and per formers but also whatever was popular in that era. Our traditional Kirchweih Dances were performedfrom our founding, but, it was the youth ofour Sport Club who began performing various German, Austrian and Hungarian Dances. In 1965, our present Cultural Group was officially formed and this group performs both ethnic and contemporary dances. We are particularly proud ofthe accomplishments ofthe last thirty years. Presently, we enjoy the harmonious relationships offour generations actively involved in our Club. Therefore, we have chosen this time to show our pride in the adoption ofa new German Hungarian Flag. The creation of this flag and its’ dedication (Fahnenweihe) will highlight our success and solid our commitment to preserve our heritageforfuture generations. 1

Dear Friends, Welcome to our Fahnenweihe Celebration! The creation of our new flag which depicts our ethnic background and traditions as well as our club life as it is today, is undoubtedly one of the most important events in our club’s history. We are happy that all of you are celebrating with us this weekend. Many members have worked diligently for over a year to prepare for this special occa sion. Hopefully, our hard work has brought us closer together and now that you are here, we hope that this time together will bring us closer too. Friendship is one of the most important things in our lives. All who are here, have similarities that bind us together. When we leave here, we go to that part of our lives which is separate from our club life and we look forward to returning to our friends and the camaraderie with which we are so familiar. We celebrate many happy times together and some times we must suffer the sad times together. The key word is “together” for if we are not together we will fail as a community, as a club, as a family and as friends. When our Fahnenweihe celebration is over, I hope that many will have made new friendships. Carry them in your hearts forever! I am honored to serve as our club’s Fahnenmutter and look forward to cele brating this happy occasion with you. Emily Fricker

VEREINIGTE DEUTSCH-UNGARN FlAG
I
Michelle Galgon, Nichole Blank and Sasha Malofly, our Fahnentraeger, pose with the Vereinigte Deutsch-Ungarn Flag BANATER MANNERCHOR FlAG
The membership of the Banater Mannerchor which was founded in 1910, increased rapidly and strides were made in various aspects of club life. Thought was now given to the purchasing of a club flag which would be worthy to represent the Banater Mannerchor. A “Flag Fund” was begun and members began collecting for the fund. On May 8, 1913 many members and friends celebrated at a festive Fahnenweihe. The Arbeiter Männerchor served as “Taufpate” and Margaretha Friedrich served as “Fahnen-Mutter”. The Flag made its first official public appearance as it was proudly carried by our singers at the “Vereinigte Arbeiter Gesangvereinen von Nord-Ost Staaten” (The United Workers’ Singing Societies of the North-Eastern States),Sangerfest in Baltimore, MD, on July 4, 1914. VEREINIGTE DEUTSCH-UNGARN FLAG
Not much is known about the circumstances of the purchasing of the Vereinigte Deutsch-Ungarn Flag. Obviously when our club’s name was changed in 1939 from Banater Maennerchor to Vereinigte Deutsch-Ungarn, a new flag was needed. We do know that a Fahnenweihe celebration was held at a picnic type festival at a place called B B Camp. We have carried this flag proudly for 55 years and it will now be retired.

THE PATENBITTEN In the late 1960s our Cultural Group began performing Schuhplattler Dances under the direction of Andy Weyershaeuser. This eventually led to the offical forming of our Schuhplattler Group in 1976. In 1982, some members of our Schuhplattler Group were at the Black Angus in Lancaster County with the Heimatklaenge Band and met the Auerhahn Schuhplattlers of Oley, PA, who were performing there. Later, the Auerhahn Schuhplattler invited us to their annual Stiftungsfest. From then on, the friendship between the two groups was sealed. Through them, we met many other area groups and in 1988, the Auerhahn sponsored us as members into the Gauverband Nordamerika. When we decided to have a new flag made, it was only natural that we would choose our friends from Oley as our “Pat”. And so on February 19, 1994, our members traveled by bus to Oley to plead our request. ‘When we entered “Schoellkopf’s Stube”, our friends were already awaiting us. Their president, Veronica Schoellkopf, weLcomed us and opened the ceremonies which were to be both serious and humorous. Our President, John M. Blank, and our Fahnenweihe Chairman, Bill Galgon, were each told to kneel on a wooden bench especially made for the occasion. (Each group received one of these as a memento.) Our other men knelt on wooden logs and we began to plead our cause with a skit we had prepared. This included songs and poems which the entire group sang and recited. Members of our Children’s Group Ed Galgon, John Blank, Werner Fricker, Alex Blank, Danny Galgon, Brian Noel, Nichole Blank and Michelle Galgon also recited a special poem. Auerhahn’s Erich Meck asked that our men raise their arms high and George Babilon stated that we must make some serious promises in order to prove worthy. At each request our men had to answer, “Immer Freunde, Kamaraden, und Treu!” For the final sign of friendship, John and Bill had to kiss the “Auerhahn”, a stuffed bird which hung on the wall. It would also be our club’s duty to name the bird before the evening was ended. Finally we were deemed worthy and various gifts were exchanged. All enjoyed a delicious buffet prepared by the Oley women with desserts prepared by our women. Three accordian players entertained us throughout the evening and we had a great time dancing and singing as old friendships were renewed and new friendships made. During the evening it was announced that the “bird” would be named DETLEFF. Finally it was time to say “aufwiedersehen” and thanking the Auerhahn for their wonderful hospitality we boarded our bus and headed for home.

A NEW FMG FOR A NEW CENTURY Our club’s flag is indeed new. It has the fresh, bright appearance of being newly crafted by talented artisans. But look again. The ele ments woven into the rich fabric are old themes. They are the com mon threads that hold the United German Hungarians together as a community of people; a people who cherish the traditions and values of their homelands and continue to successfully weave the old and the new into their lives today. The flag not only pays tribute to the club’s forebearers, but it also defines who we are today and how we strive to preserve that heritage for our families here in the United States. The flag’s contrasting sides are a visual interpretation of the past and the present. The first side is in recognition of those who came before us from the original homelands of central and southeastern Europe. This beautiful depiction of a fictional village captures the common landscapes found in the farming regions of southern Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Romania and Czechoslovakia. The nat ural resources, architectural renderings and geographic details evoke the essence of life as it was in the old country. ‘While idyllic in its depiction of family, work and church, it must not be forgotten that great strength, determination and hard work were necessary to pre serve their way of life. The beauty of the region’s common flowers Rosmarein, Edelweiss, Mohnblumen and Enzian

Sitte, treu der Tracht, treu der Heimat,” is testimony to the beliefs these people carried with them as they resettled their families time and again: faithful to the traditions, faithful to the costume, faithful to the homeland. This philosophy was surely a factor in the organization of the Banater Männerchor, who opened the doors of our first clubhouse in Philadelphia in 1910. The second side of the flag is an affirmation of the United German Hungarians today. Our current roots are emphasized at the top by the triad of national landmarks to be found nearby and by the inclusion of our state’s founding father. Philadelphia is home to our nation’s Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
The significant legacy of
William Penn’s “holy experiment” in the new world is a reality to every immigrant in search of freedom. Our clubhouse today is the place where we come together to meet, to socialize, to work and to play. It is the center point for many facets which comprise the life of our club. It is a place where culture flour ishes in the forms of traditional and contemporary German and American dance and music. It is where athletes young and old, male and female, take pleasure in the sport of soccer. It is the place where the various aspects of the old and the new are alive and borne by the members of this club. It is a force for growth, for sharing and for continuing. As the United German Hungarians approach their 85th year as an organization, we realize the values and ideals purposely stitched into the fabric of the new flag are more than symbols. They are pieces of the thread of the future. Haidy Krueger Kerber 1

INTERNATIONAL ZIPSER REUNION
-
H
1992
German Hungarian Dancers, Yvonne Schiller, Lynda Buchhalter, Sue Galgon, Connie Reiter, Barbara Reiter and Janet Malofly pose in authentic “Zpser” costumes at the reunion held at our club on September 4, 1992
Die Zzps The colonization of the Zips, a region in eastern part of Slovakia, took place in the 12th century and lasted approximately 200 years. During that time, the kings of Upper Hungary invited people from Saxony and other parts of Germany to develop the land and natural resources of this region, as well as to create a new homeland for these settlers, where they could enjoy personal liberty. Their forefathers endured many hardships between the 12th and 19th centuries as they transformed Upper Hungary into a culturally and economically rich region called the Zips. In the fall of 1946, they endured difficult times as they were forced to leave their homeland. The Zips as it had been known for centuries came to an end. This group still strives to preserve their cultural inheritance of lan guage, song, dance and food not only in their individual families but have formed an international reunion committee.

Making a big world smaller.
What difference does it make that Lufthansa flies to more international destinations than any other single airline? Or that every 40 seconds a Lufthansa plane takes off or lands in one ot 180 cities around the world? The point is that over the years every experience with every traveler, from every corner of the world, has helped us understand you. Weve come to know cultures and customs from around the globe. All the better to help you feel at home everywhere, on the ground. and in the air Even in many cities we don’t fly to, you’ll find a Lufthansa office ready to serve your needs. Experience thats worldwide and worldwise. It’s a difference that’s helped us make friends with a world full of travelers. And that can make this big world feel very small indeed.
