November 10 - German Hungarian Kirchweih

Through our association with the Verband der Donauschwaben we were able to host their Memorial Day Soccer Tournament. 16 teams in 3 different groups from across the U.S. and Canada took the field for the annual competition. We were reunited with friends we have made and the competition in the bar was almost as intense as it was on the field. The final reward was our Major Team taking first place. As summer approached the German Hungarians made the biannual trip to the Gaufest, this year going to Orlando Florida. Arriving with a group of 90 strong we were again able to win the “Meist” Prize. It is a true testament to our members and families that we continue to attend this event with such a large group. As always, our Cultural Group and our Soccer Program are the benchmark by which we are judged around the country. They always set that mark very high and we must be proud of what they do every day. Each time we have an opportunity to host a national event, the standards that we set are always well received and respected. The United German Hungarians of Philadelphia and Vicinity is a name proudly recognized throughout the United States and now Canada. 2012 will again give us an opportunity to display our facilities on a national level. On April 20 & 21 we will be the location for the “Forgotten Genocide Conference”. This convention is now at an international level. Ann Morrison the facilitator of this seminar has traveled throughout the world to interview survivors of post World War II Eastern Europe and allowed them to tell their stories. Speakers as well as the completed film series and books will be on display. You are all encouraged to attend. On February 25th we will be the location for “Winterfest” an evening where German Students from the Council Rock, Central Bucks, and Upper Moreland school districts will visit the German Hungarians to enjoy a German meal, sing and dance to German songs, and be entertained by our full Cultural Group. Again you are encouraged to attend. I have written many times about improving our business model. Every year we take on that task and make necessary adjustments. 2012 will not be any different. Last year we had a very noticeable decline in catering business. The recession affects us as much as any business, as our expenses have increased the working family income has decreased.

The most Important Traditional German Hungarian Event!

November 14 - Women’s Auxiliary Penny Party December 16 - Christmas Dinner & Cultural Group Performance

Join us for this special event of Christmas cheer featuring our Cultural Group, a special Nativity scene and a visit from Santa.

December 31 - New Year’s Eve Celebration

We are continually working to create new ideas and excitement at the club but, we need the support of all members and families to attend as often as possible. We are not in a position to take things for granted. There is still a lot of hard work ahead of us, but, we should meet these challenges by having fun and enjoy our times together. I look forward to making 2012 a year we will all be proud of by working with our officers, chair people and members, as well as members of the Bayerischer Volksfest Verein. William Galgon President

The GH Cultural Group, founded in 1965, is an accomplished ensemble of which all our members can be justly proud. Originally developed to foster the continuance of the traditional and folk dances of our ethnic background, the Cultural Group has expanded into several facets; they perform Viennese Waltzes, Hungarian Czardas, Contemporary Dances, and Schuhplattler Dancing. The group brings German Folk Dancing, not only to the German American Community, but to all our friends and neighbors regardless of ethnic heritage. Their eagerness to uphold the traditions of the German Heritage into which most of them were born is one thing that outshines their many Accomplishments.

ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW: Schocktoberfest – A Halloween Party for All Ages! This successful Halloween Party, held on Saturday, October 29 was sponsored by our Board of Governors with Renny Papendick and Lisa Fricker as co-chairmen. There was a great turnout of both our Soccer and Cultural Program members with parents, family and friends in attendance. Many enjoyed the food and drinks that were available for purchase. The dance floor was full of costumed guests who danced and paraded around to the tunes played by Tommy the DJ. Among the prize winners were: “The A Team” featuring Kevin “Soop” Novalski, Michael Jackson, Dan Galgon and Michael Blank; a young girl dressed as a “Care Bear”; and Caleb Lowery as “The Headless Horseman”. If you missed this event, make sure you put it on your calendar for 2012. Kirchweihfest- A Traditional German Hungarian Festival Our club has celebrated this festival since the founding of our club. Since most of our founders came from the northern part of the province of Banat, originally in Hungary, we celebrate in a similar way that those villagers did. Over the years, we have made this fest into our own club’s Kirchweihfest and have omitted or added our own customs and traditions. The leader of the Kirchweih Couples is known as the “Geld Herr” and he carries the Rosemary Bush decorated with colorful ribbons, the “Strauss”. He also recites the “Kirchweih Spruch” a few stanzas of a poem depicting Kirchweih customs. This year this task was the responsibility of Werner Fricker III who did a remarkable job. The Kirchweih Couples were: Werner Fricker III and Allysa Reiter Alex Blank and Karina Fricker Michael Fricker and Emma Walter Dan Galgon, Nichole Deely and Christopher Deely Jr. Sasha Malofiy and Kristen Reiter Steve Paul, Sofi Walter and Ed Galgon Nick Walter and Michelle Paul Karl Fetzer and Jenn Lineman Michael Blank and Fallon Weyershaeuser Jakob Hubert and Sabina Hartman Evan Hubert and Karina Wiehan Nicholas Wagner and Kyra Malofiy Matthew Proll and Anika Mahadaven Ryan Proll and Emily Wagner The Kirchweih Strauss was won by Susi Hartmann who along with her husband, Joe, danced the dance of honor with the Kirchweih Couples. All enjoyed the Buffet Dinner which featured roast “pig” among other delicacies and of course the music of the Heimatklaenge Orchestra. Fall Penny Party – Sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary The Auxiliary once again hosted a successful event. We thank all our members and friends who support us throughout the year and the members of the various German American clubs who attend these events regularly. To create a successful event, many hours and many hands are necessary. Thanks to all! German Hungarian Club Christmas Party As in all of the events above, this event also takes many committees to make it a success. Again we had a full house and the Cultural Group under the leadership of Janet Malofiy put on an enjoyable play, “The Littlest Star” and the Nativity Scene. The hot dinner buffet was capably prepared by our Kitchen Committee and their staff, and Maria Antoniak of the Heimatklaenge Orchestra, provided her talent with her beautiful music. The kids were all happy to visit with Santa and the Christmas Spirit filled us all. New Year’s Eve Celebration Once again a happy celebration took place at our club. All who attended enjoyed the delicious filet mignon dinner, the fast and courteous service rendered by our Bar Chairman, Sasha Malofiy, and his staff, the continental breakfast and above all the music of the Heimatklaenge Orchestra who were great!!! We believe we are the only German American Club in the general area who still offer a new year’s eve celebration with a German Band. However, we were disappointed in the attendance and wish our loyal members would also celebrate the new year with us. Maybe next time? Reservations We thank Nichole Deely, Emily Fricker, Janet Malofiy and Lisa Fricker who took the reservations for the various events above.

IN MEMORIAM

Julius Menhardt, Jr. 1929 – 2011

“Some men collect stamps, others collect cars, but, Julius Menhardt collected friends!” Julius Menhardt Jr. of Richboro died on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne. He was 82 years of age. He was the husband of Helen Koestel Menhardt for 56 years and the father of Heidi Ryder, Kurt Menhardt and Werner Menhardt. Jules, as he was known to all, was born on November 30, 1929 in the German region of Czechoslovakia. He was the son of the late, Julius Sr. and Julie Gally Menhardt and the brother of the late John and the late Edward. Raised on a farm, he lived through the horrors of World War II. After losing his older brother, John, on the last day of the war, the family immigrated to America and settled in Philadelphia. Soon afterwards, Jules was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps and set to Korea where he proudly served his new country. After the war, he worked as a carpenter and soon started his own contracting company. Jules was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Somerton Section of Philadelphia where he was instrumental in the construction of the church bell tower and also helped in various other construction areas. He became a member of our club after his club, the Karpathian Saengerbund, in Philadelphia dissolved. Almost immediately, Jules became active and worked with his brother Ed on our House Committee. Through the years, he served on various committees and offered his help whenever needed. He served on our Board of Governors, off and on, during the 1970s, 80s, 90s and in the 2000s. From 1986 to 1990, Jules was a member of our Executive Board serving as Treasurer under then president, John Blank. Jules was a fan of both our soccer teams and our dance groups. He and his wife Helen attended most of our entertainment events, often including their entire family. As most of you know, Tuesday is the night to go to the club in recent years. On Tuesdays, many meetings and dance and soccer practices are held. For all of these people Jules was someone who was seen every week, as Tuesday is also the night that the card players get together to play. He always said hello, and everyone heard him, and he never left without saying “Goodbye Everybody!” Every ten years, our club presents an “Ehrenwuerdig” pin to members for dedicated service and Jules was presented with this pin in 1980 at our club’s 70th Anniversary Banquet. He was also the recipient of a certificate in recognition for his contributions to the development of the game of soccer at our club at our club’s celebration of “75 Years of Soccer” in 1997. Jules was also active with the Carpathian German National Group and was able to visit his home town in recent years. Jules was a fan of all the Philadelphia sports teams, but he especially loved soccer and skiing. His legacy will forever be a passion for life and a love for his family and friends. He in turn, was also well loved as was obvious at the many people who attended his funeral service which was held on Thursday, December 15th at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church with burial at the Forest Hills Cemetery. We offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Helen, their three children, their spouses and their ten grandchildren. The United German Hungarians have lost an extraordinary man in the losing of our member, Julius Menhardt. You see - he collected all of us.
