March 2012 GERMAN HUNGARIAN RED While watching our U-16s play on field 1 one Sunday, someone turned to me and asked why the team was wearing white uniforms. This person went on to state that her son’s coach told them “At UGH we always wear red, unless the I tell you otherwise. That’s the UGH way!” An interesting theory! If we asked this coach what the club colors are, the obvious answer would be “Red, and Black!” Today, that is what our team colors are, but most people don’t know that our “Club” colors were Blue and Gold. The shades of blue, and gold, come from the city in which the Banater Männerchor was founded. The flag of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, consists of three vertical stripes of equal width (blue, gold, blue) with the city coat of arms across the center of the gold stripe. The blue and gold colors commemorate the original Swedish colonization of Philadelphia. It is not known if our teams ever wore these colors. So this brings up the question of “Where did the red and black come from?” Many reasons why the Banater Athletic club would have chosen red, black, and white arise. Red is the color of passion, courage and sacrifice. We the German Hungarians are a passionate, and courageous people. Perhaps this points to the reason for its choice. Red is also the color used most often in National flags. Red can be found on the flag of Germany, the country to which the Banater Schwaben trace their history. Red is also found on the flags of Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, and Serbia. These are the many “nations” our people came from. Red is also found in the flag of the United States, the great nation that became many of these immigrants home, and where we were founded and still exist today. Red is often associated with fascism, and socialism. As a clarification of thought, it was groups such as these that forced the Banat Germans into oppression, and who raped, murdered and starved their people after the Second World War. The Banat Germans, simply because they were ethnically German, were the enemy of the red army (USSR). Obviously our members were people who either did not associate this, with the color, or were able to look beyond this, in favor of the passion and drive of the organization. The discussion of the red of our uniforms reminds me that it was Jürgen Klinsmann, the current head coach of the USA, who cited, in reference to his request for red for the German National team, that teams in red are statistically more successful, and perceived as more intimidating. The United States have only recently re-adopted the red in their uniforms. There was a belief that the red was not included in the USA’s uniforms because of Werner Fricker’s hatred of communism. We know this to be a myth because we can clearly note that Werner Fricker played for the German Hungarians from 1954-1969, as well as coached many teams at the club that all wore Red. The uniforms that this club has worn have gone through many changes throughout the 90 years we have been playing soccer! I have begun and will continue to document a history of the German Hungarians uniforms beginning in 1922 with the Banater Athletic Club. This history will be presented in parts in the Monthly Progress. Michael Fricker
Monthly Progress DANCING AROUND
Our Cultural Group performed at the WINTERFEST which was hosted at our club by the Council Rock School District on Saturday, February 25. The Children’s Group performed the Shoemaker Dance and I See You. The Young Adults performed the Sound of Music Laendler and the Sauerlaender Quadrille and the Kreuz Koenig (or as many call it “the flying dance”). Our Schuhplattlers performed Inntaller, Laendler Potpourri and Stern Polka. The over 300 guests which included students of the German Language, their parents and friends from Council Rock and Central Bucks School Districts, had not been at our club before and thoroughly enjoyed the schnitzel dinner, the Heimatklaenge Orchestra and the dancers! The GTV Almrausch Schuhplattlers of Philadelphia hosted THE 9TH ANNUAL MIDATLANTIC EINZELPLATTLN COMPETITION at the Cannstatter VV. Although the participants perform as a couple, each person is judged individually. The dancers were divided into three age groups: ages nine and under; ages 10 to 13; and ages 14 to 17. A dancer may dance out of their age group, but, they will not be judged in that category. For example: Sasha Malofiy (age 18) danced with his sister Kyra Malofiy (age 9) while Sasha also danced with Allysa Reiter (age 17) and Michael Fricker (age 19) danced with Karina Fricker (age 14). These two boys did not participate in the competition. The following couples from our club participated: Ages 9 and under (9 couples danced) Nicholas Wagner (6) and Emily Wagner (3) Sasha Malofiy and Kyra Malofiy (9) Matthew Proll (6 ) and Sabina Hartman (9) Ages 10 to 13 (9 couples danced) Our club did not compete in this age group. Ages 14 to 17 (11 couples danced)

ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Our Annual General Membership Meeting was held on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at approximately 11 AM. A Moment of Silence was held for all your deceased members especially for Jules Menhardt who died in December. The minutes of the previous AGM (March 6, 2011) were read and approved. Each member present received a packet of information. President Bill Galgon made his annual report and read the financial report. Although most committee reports were in the packet, a few were asked to give a spoken report. Among them: Soccer Director, Andy J. Weyershaeuser. Among his report: we presently have 12 Youth teams and 5 Adult teams; 125 kids are in the 3 to 8 peewee program; nine kids who went through our soccer program are now attending college. Susi Hartmann, who has recently become the Cultural Group Chairman reported that our group is very busy throughout the year and will be performing at the 102 nd anniversary banquet on March 24th and reminded all that the group will be attending the Donauschwaben Landestreffen over the Labor Day Weekend and we would love to have as many of our members attend as possible. Marlene Fricker spoke about the Forgotten Genocide Conference to be held at our club in April. All actions taken by the Board of Governors and the Executive Board during the year were confirmed. Bobby Wilkinson, Sasha Malofiy, Joe Hartmann, and John Reiter were nominated for election to fill the expired terms on the Board of Governors and were elected by acclamation. Our president further stated that our club activities are going well. Our events have good support but we need better attendance. He praised the success of “A Night In Vienna”, the Winter Fest and the Youth Soccer Banquet. He encouraged all to attend the future events. The meeting was adjourned. Unfortunately, the soccer game which was scheduled was cancelled because of bad field conditions. Some enjoyed the lunch prepared by Heidi Weyershaeuser and spent an afternoon of good camaraderie.
AMONG OUR MEMBERS Congratulations to Kyra Malofiy who place 2nd in her age group for girls at the 9th Annual mid-Atlantic Youth Einzelplattln Schuhplattler Competition on March 3rd. Congratulations to Monika Drach and Tony on their recent engagement. Glad to hear that Joe Helmlinger is recuperating from his recent operation. Keep coming with the good news! So sorry to hear of the death of Joseph Mueller of Warminster, who died on March 4th at age 76. Joe was a life member of our club and a member of “K3ZGT” of the Warminster Amateur Radio Club. He was the husband of Maria and is also survived by his daughters, Sue Galgon and Rose Stotsenburgh along with her husband Bud, his grandchildren: Michelle Avrich, Edward and Daniel Galgon, and Cortney Stotsenburgh. He is also survived by his sisters Maria Caporaletti and Heidi Levis and her husband Bill. Joe was a member of our Sport Club Dance Group in the l950s and his wife Maria and daughters were involved in our Cultural Group for many years. Joe and Marie served on many committees but can probably be best remembered for their work on the Entertainment Committee. His funeral was held on March 8th at the Kirk & Nice Suburban Chapel in Feasterville. Donations in his memory may be made to the Rosenfeld Cancer Center c/ o Abington Health Foundation 1200 Old York Rd., Abington , PA 19001.
