THE LEGENDS OF SOCCER What does it mean to be a legend? To many people, a legend is a fictitious story or figure. In Ethnic -American Club life we live among Legends. The men and women that came before and built what we have today were legends in their time. Those with whom we live and work and with whom we have made lasting friendships are the legends of today. There Legend is one that is now lived off the field. At one time we brought that legend back to the field. Soccer players who had long since retired, pulled up their socks, laced up their boots, tucked in their shirts, and stepped foot on a field as the LEGENDS of Soccer. That was over twenty years ago, and sometime in the 2000s the Tradition was abandoned. In the time since, new Legends were born. It is now time again for us to bring that Legend back to the field.

It was in 1992 that the Gemutlichen Enzianer and the German Hungarian Schuhplattlers first came together to share the common heritage and love of soccer together. The men that each of these groups presented on the field were and are Legends. A strong friendship was forged and a competition was part of that friendship. Above all the LEGENDS OF SOCCER was about camaraderie, friendship and tradition. We were friends both on and off that field. The post game, “celebrations” were done in the usual style of these fine organizations. Food was prepared and beer flowed from the taps. Those who were musically inclined volunteered their entertainment for the evening. The day started with Soccer being played together.

Then we ate and drank together. Music was played together and we danced and sang together. Now we will re-introduce this tradition. th

On Saturday August 11 2012 once again we are proud to host the Gemuetlichen Enzianer in Oakford Pa. The Soccer Game will be played in GH Beneficial Stadium at 2:30pm. As always the bar will be open. For information about playing or any other questions please contact:

GERMAN HUNGARIAN RED The 1960s In 1959 the German Hungarians became a founding member of the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania and our own Frank Follmer was elected as its first President. The German Hungarians just missed claiming the title as first Champions of the new league by one point; however they were the winners of the EDU Cup, a cup created by the outlawed League after being denied entry into the National Cups, in 1960. The uniform pictured here was used at various times and by various teams throughout the early 1960s. The shirt was a long-sleeved lace up style similar to the German Hungarian Majors – 1960 uniforms worn by the German National team in the 50s.

It was a white uniform with a black collar. The shorts were black as well as the socks. The logo used was a circle with an interlocking “DU”. This logo was used by teams from 1960 through 1962. This uniform was also used by the 1962 German Hungarian Majors, who were Champions of the United Soccer League. In the 1960-1961 Season the German Hungarians won their first United League Championship.

German Hungarian Majors – 1961 Again dressed in white this uniform was a plain white shirt with interlocking First United Soccer League Champions to right: - Bottom: N. Pfann, W. Fricker, Captain; J. Dunn, J. Stei“DU” logo. This was one of the first short-sleeved shirts that were worn. The socks worn were Left gerwald, O. Jethon, L. Hildenbrand, Top Row: H. Birkenheuer, Manager; J. Proll, A. Reiter, A. Jethon, A. black; however they had a thick white band at the top. The German Hungarians were ChamNothum, F. Plescha, V. Werbitzky, A. Piskei, W. Wilkinson, P. Piskei, D. pions of the USL for six years in a row from 1961 to 1966. A photo of the 1963 Majors, who Brand, J. Piatka. also won the EDU cup, shows a red version of the uniform seen in 1961.

A red version of the shirt is what this team is equipped with. The shorts are black with a white stripe down the side. The socks are also black and feature three white stripes around the middle section of the sock. Here the goalkeeper is dressed in a plain black long-sleeved shirt.

In 1964 the GH Majors in addition to being champions of the USL, were Eastern US Champions as well as US National Amateur Cup Finalists. In the Final of the National Amateur Cup, the GH Majors wore a simple white short -sleeved shirt, black shorts and black socks. This uniform featured no logo, insignia, or initials. After suffering a loss in Chicago against Chicago Schwaben, the GH Majors made it their goal to return to the Final of the National Cup again the next year and they did just that.

In 1965 the GH Majors were Champions of the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania and on June 27th they became US National Amateur Cup Champions winning on their home field in Oakford. The Uniform worn in this championship match was a far cry from what they had worn the previous year in Chicago. They wore a combination of red, black, black.

The shirt was a crew neck style and short-sleeved. This time the German Hungarian Majors – 1965 insignia was a bold G with the H slightly lower in position. The United Soccer League Champions shorts that were worn were a uniform black. The socks were US National Amateur Cup Champions black with three red stripes around the middle section. The Photo at the left was taken Birkenheuer, Manager; in 2010. Here the goalkeeper is dressed in white and his uniform Missing because of military service: Frank Plescha bears a logo that was used by teams from 1960 through 1966.

The following year the team was seen in a red uniform. It was long-sleeved and featured the circular sport club logo pictured at the at the left. This uniform was worn during the last season of the six year streak of championships for the team. The 1966 United Soccer League Championship team is pictured with the Amateur Cup Trophy that was one the year prior. The logo that was used on this uniform was the last to be used in the 60s before the introduction of the keystone.

Designed in 1964 the keystone did not become a mainstay of the teams until 1968. One of the first teams that appeared wearing the Sport Club Keystone was the 1968 Major Team. The GH Majors captured their seventh Championship of the USL in the 1967-1968 season. At the Time only twice in nine years the club did not win the league.

This uniform was white and Short-sleeved and featured the keystone logo. The shorts were solid black. The socks were white and are the earliest example of a white, black, white combination. This white set had a red set to match that was a red, black, red combination that was used in 1970 as well. The 60s ended with the retirement of two players who had been key parts of the teams that began the many successes of the decade. Werner Fricker, who joined the club as early as 1954, and Peter Piskei, who joined in the late fifties retired and with them they took the many different uniforms and insignias of the past.

AMONG OUR MEMBERS The following members of our Cultural and Schuhplattler Group and friends have recently graduated: Stevie Paul recently graduated from St. Christopher School in Philadelphia and was the recipient of the Father Judge Faith in the Future Grant along with the Father Judge High School Alumni Association Grant. Stevie will attend Father Judge High School in the fall; Kristen Reiter recently graduated from Log College Middle School and will attend William Tennent High School in Warminster; Emma Walter who will attend Hamilton High School West in Hamilton, New Jersey in September graduated from Grice Middle School; Fallon Weyershaeuser will attend Holy Family University on a Dean’s Scholarship having graduated from George Washington High School in Philadelphia; Allysa Reiter graduated from William Tennent High School and will attend the Philadelphia University of Philadelphia majoring in Fashion Design; Pamela Blesi, niece of Brian Blesi, major team soccer player, recently graduated from PACS Philadelphia Academy Charter Grade School and will attend Philadelphia Academy Charter High School.

Glad to hear that Joe Hartmann who recently had double knee replacements is home from the hospital and busy doing physical therapy under the watchful eye of his wife, Anna. Keep up the good work!

Congratulations to Fallon Weyershaeuser and Sean Flanagan who recently became the parents of Joseph Michael. Joey is the grandson of Kurt Weyershaeuser and the great grandson of Regina and Andy Weyershaeuser.

It is with sorrow that we report the death of yet another important German American.

Herbert Schubert, 76, of Wyomissing, PA died on June 22 nd. Herbi was the husband of Eva (Horner) Schubert, the father of Margit Schubert-Caschione (Joseph), and grandfather of Joseph, Elke and Christian. He was born in Forchheim, Germany. He was a honorary and founding member of the Evergreen CC and an honorary member of the Reading Liederkranz. An avid soccer player, he played for the Evergreen CC, the German Hungarian Old Timers, the Reading Amerks and the Philadelphia All stars Soccer Team. In 1958, he was awarded the Berks County Chamber of Commerce Soccer Award. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church. His burial was private.

Page 4 GERMAN AMERICAN VOLKSFEST Plattduetsch Park, Franklin Sq. NY On the weekend of July 14th I had the chance to go to New York to Plattduetsch Park to support and listen to the Heimatklaenge play music at the German-American festival. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and the classic sounds of our band were heard as we walked into the park. This was the first time I’ve been at an outdoor event at this club and remembered it! Even though the heat was almost unbearable, we had a great time with some of our friends from Gemuetlichen Enzianer, Original Enzian, and the Schlierachtaler Stamm. The Gemuetlichen Enzian performed on Saturday and they danced beautifully. The dance floor was full for most of the night, and we were persuaded by our friends from “Original” to stay for the second day of the event, and of course we could not say no! We arrived on Sunday and were happy to watch the Original Enzian and Schlierachtaler dance on the band breaks. They did a great job and I’m glad I went. The band was great, and hopefully we get to go again next year!!
