DECEMBER 2014

The United German Hungarians Executive Board, Board of Governors, Chairman, Committee Members and Auxiliary Groups wish all our members, their families and friends a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! PRESIDENT’S —CHRISTMAS MESSAGE— Dear Members, It is at this time of year that we find ourselves most busy with preparations for Christmas. I hope you are enjoying everything that goes along with this joyous holiday. There is something magJANET MALOFIY ical about Christmas that leaves us all feeling very good. I find myself reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas and thankful for what I have and what we have as a club family. I am thankful for my family, our members and the friendships we have developed and those that have existed for many years. It is unique to have the opportunity to socialize with different ages in a cultural and soccer setting. Looking to the future and the beginning of 2015, I feel we must focus on unity, support and desire. We must be unified in our commitment to continue carrying on traditions, so they remain strong and alive. Support of all members, friends and families is a necessary ingredient in being successful as a club. And last, but not least, we must have the desire to make all this happen. I have a wish for this magical feeling to spill into the New Year and let us continue to keep our hearts and minds open! I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

—EAST PENN. OPEN CUP— United League’s West Chester United Claims 4th Consecutive EPSA Open Cup Title On Sunday, December 7, West Chester United faced Junior Lone Star FC in the final of the Eastern Pennsylvania Open Cup. In the end, West Chester would win the match with a score of 4-3 over the Stars. West Chester United is one of the core teams of the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania and in recent years have emerged as a competitive league and cup team. This year, they captured their fourth State Open Cup title and in doing so represented the league and the area well. The German Hungarians were the last team to be four time consecutive Open Cup Champions in EPSA from 1996-97 to 2000-01 seasons. West Chester Coach, Blaise Santangelo told the Philly soccer page, “We knew that JLS had talented group of young players who would pressure us all over the field as they did for most part of the game. They were all over us in the first half. They used their flanks well to score those three goals in the first half. Our back line and goalie were just trying to weather the storm!” West Chester United will now represent Eastern Pennsylvania in the Regional Competition of the USASA, Werner Fricker Open Cup. In the four years, prior West Chester has not been able to move beyond the first regional round. Santangelo noted, “Playing the last three years in spring regional Open Cup competition really gives our winter training a purpose and we are all looking forward to it.” The United German Hungarians wish West Chester luck in the regional rounds as they represent East Penn., and the United Soccer league of Pennsylvania. West Chester has struggled in league play this season and currently sits in ninth place out of ten with a record of (1-5-3). Michael www.ughclub.us

—SELECTED WORDS FROM TRACHTENFEST— It was a beautiful time. That is all that needs to be said, however the words spoken that evening stand as the spirit of three clubs united in culture. It is here we share them again.

The kind of German-Americans We Are

—SCHEDULE OF EVENTS— For 2015, we celebrate our 105th Anniversary and our events go right on rolling! We hope you all can attend your fair share of our major and monthly events this coming year! Please note that many of these events are tentative but you will be informed of any changes or additions promptly prior to all events! First up in January enjoy “A Night Out,” Winter Dinner, a charming dinner out with your significant other at your club! This winter, get away from the routine & enjoy a meal & a drink with friends at the United German Hungarians! A Night in Vienna has been moved up to February 7 this year and I am sure it will be a wonderful affair. Look at our other upcoming events: January 16 - “A Night Out,” Winter Dinner

Gud’novet Schwowe! Es macht mich viel freit das mir heit Trachtenfest feire. In unser scheenes Schwowe gwand – Es scheenes musich – Un allie die lebhaftee junge leit. Welcome to our Trachtenfest. We gather this evening as Americans of German descent, more specifically “Schwoweleit.” For many Americans of German descent, it is enough to maintain their heritage by eating a schnitzel, a wurst with sauerkraut or by attending an Oktoberfest party. We the members of the three clubs represented here tonight, take it a step further. Tonight we celebrate what kind of German-Americans we are, Schwowe. We celebrate where our ancestors come from the German speaking settlements of the former Austria-Hungary in the Banat, the Batschka and the Hungarian Highlands. Make no mistake; our ancestors were a happy, educated, thriving society. They were well to do members of their culturally diverse communities. Their lives centered around farming crops and trade, church activities, Kirchweihfest – their major yearly fest – and their Tracht. Today as part II of the “Living History Days 2014,” we don the Tracht of our ancestors and celebrate Trachtenfest. Marlene Fricker January 17 - Mid-Atlantic Jugend Meeting February 7 - A Night In Vienna The Donauschwäbische Mundart I had a chance fifteen years ago, to go with my mother and my aunt Emma to the Treffen in Sindelfingen, and at that Treffen I met a wonderful man named Gustav Flander. Gustav Flander was born 1927 in the northern Banat village of Botschar. He has written many poems as well as historical pieces about his lost homeland. All of his work is in Donauschwäbischer Mundart. His works all speak from deep in his heart. In his booklet titled “Dehaam war Dehaam” he wrote, “Lese wie es geschrieben steht dann klingt die Mundart echt und schön.” Werner Fricker

Continuing a Proud Tradition

April 19 - Sunday Funday Pig Roast

We had many a conversation that evening. With over 260 people in the hall, guests, dancers, speakers and staff alike, it was hard to find a face without a smile. Before the evening, we tagged this event as an “Evening of Ethnic German Pride and Celebration.” If you were there, you witnessed and took part in the pride for what we accomplished between the great minds and hearts of the three clubs. What seemed to be pushed, rightly so, into almost every conversation I had, was the idea that we must continue. Five years is too long to wait. Consistently when we come together, we succeed and we grow. More so, we enjoy it. I had a conversation with a certain Hans Martini, who with a chuckle and a sincere belief pinpointed me to use my voice to ensure this continues. I believe he felt, I as a young person could inspire my peers and my elders alike to continue the tradition we set of working together. I believe the club-to-club-to-club relationship is strong and growing because of the individuals that make them up. As we do more to mesh, we understand one another in newfound ways. We learn in every meeting, at every event and certainly over all the hearty meals and refreshing drinks. The more we take advantage, the more we can put our assets together to achieve something great. We need to be our biggest motivator. We need to come together and celebrate who we are because we want to. The beauty in all of this is that everything we do, we for each other. These three events that make up Living History Days 2014 are great in that they put on display the strong suits of each organization. We have seen the fruits of two at this point, but do not forget that early next year we will see the third. “A Taste of Everyday Life” will be taking place at the Trenton Donauschwaben Association and I am sure it will be a wonderful time! We also know you will take part in the event as excitedly as the first two. We, as a community, must continue the traditions we have set for ourselves. Michael

It is no doubt that the Monthly Progress takes the position that social stands at the forefront. It holds united the other two. Please attend our events. We have them for the membership!

—DANCING AROUND— On Saturday, November 1, we celebrated Kirchweih in the main hall of the clubhouse with many long time club members and friends. From the point of view of a member of the dance group, we hold this event to a higher level because of the immense history and tradition that comes along with it. Dressing in our black vests and pants or our beautifully sewn Kirchweih shawls that are handed down generation to generation, we can’t help but smile and be proud of who we are and where we come from. Thank you to everyone who attended! The following weekend, we traveled Lancaster, PA to participate in the Gauverband Judges Training. The purpose of this event is for the Gauverband judges to start preparing for judging at Gaufest. Those who attended performed Einzel and Gruppen dances. Attending this event is helpful to the dancers, but most importantly, helpful to the judges. It was a good chance to see good friends and to perform competition dances. The next weekend, some of our dancers returned to Lancaster to celebrate the Alpenrose Stiftungsfest! A Trachtenfest was held along with the Philadelphia Donauschwaben and the Trenton Donauschwaben on November 29. Each club performed dances separately, but also two dances were performed with all three clubs together. Members of each dance group recited poems in English and in German. This event was a good way to strengthen our relationships and friendships made with these two groups and it was an honor to work with such fun people on our performances! On Saturday, December 6, we participated in German-American weekend at the Christmas Village in Center City Philadelphia. Although the weather was rather dreary and the rainwaters fell down all around, the afternoon was a nice affair. Luckily, there was a nice dry place for us to perform. That same evening a few of our dancers traveled to Long Island, NY to celebrate the 86th Edelweiss Ball with the Schlierachtaler Stamm! It was a fine celebration with the various Schuhplattlers in the area! Our Children’s Group is currently working on a performance for the annual Club Christmas Party! This is a great tradition and we look forward to seeing their work. From all of the members of the Cultural and Schuhplattler Groups, have a very Merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season and a very Happy New Year! Karina
