—GETTING TO KNOW YOU—

—BEHIND OUR NAME—

—THE NAME’S THE SAME—

Lest we forget that we are a social institution, this featured column is presented. The German Hungarians are a community and a community requires members. In an effort to bring together our membership, staff writer Karina Fricker has taken upon herself the task of “Getting to Know You!” These short biographies will help us all to get to know one another better. Therefore, if you see one of these faces you did not know before stop, smile and say hello. You may make a new friend for life!

Last month we discussed the enterprising nature of our members and the role that private business took in the formation and name of our organization. As we move through the history, we have found that, our name has roots in Banat but also in its surrounding areas of Eastern Europe. In the States, the Banater Athletic Club as a section of our organization was the first to adopt something similar to our name today. Then the Business Men’s Association arose in the 1930s, separate, but related to our club by its many common members. The ultimate name change for our organization would not come until October 24, 1939. Rent, Buy, Build A club is not a building. It is not a field or a stadium. It is not a bar, a dance floor or a grove. A club is a social gathering of people around common feelings, ideas or goals. You, the members are and always were the club. Naturally, a club needs a gathering place and we have had a variety that we have given numerous names. After that first meeting in Fred Schnabel’s "saloon" at Germantown Avenue and Oxford Street, the young Banater Männerchor acquired temporary quarters at a hall at Eighth Street and Columbia Avenue owned by the Männerchor Rheingold. In time, the Banater purchased the hall from the Rheingold and is said to have “swallowed up” its membership. In 1923, our club purchased Columbia Sänger Hall from the Columbia Gesang Verein. Our club purchased the hall at 2007-13 N Second Street for $26,000.00. Redubbed, “Banater Männerchor Hall,” this location is the Romanesque building that your grandparents refer to as “The city” or “old club.” Naturally after 1939 and the club’s name change the name of the building became “German Hungarian Hall,” and remained so until 1961. When in 1933 the Business Men’s Association also purchased a “tract of land,” in Neshaminy Falls, PA. That group developed it with a small clubhouse and a picnic area. The end of the Business Men’s Association was not so much an end as it was a beginning. In May of 1946, the Business Men turned over their assets to the United German Hungarians and so with it the great Neshaminy property that would affectionately become known as the “country club” versus the “city club” at Norris that was held until 1961. Today many of us see that castle on a hill and think “Oakford.” Michael

Many of our members are fathers and sons and have been such over the years. According to our past presidents list in our 100th Anniversary Book, our sixth president was Michael J. Stumpf. He was president from 1934 to 1936. I do not really know much about him, but he was alive when I was a young girl and I do remember him. His son, also Michael Stumpf, was a musician, a violin player and his orchestra often played for events at the club at Second & Norris Streets. Mike also played at our present club, often for A Night In Vienna. Tenth on the list is Frank Follmer serving from 1946 to 1949. He was also one of the founders of the United Soccer League and the league’s first president. His son, also Frank Follmer played soccer as a youth and participated in the Sport Club Dance Group. I remember a friend of mine telling me, “Oh yeah! We had to go every week and see Frankie Follmer play. He was really good.” Frank is still a member of our club and we appreciate his support. Werner Fricker was president from 1968 to 1976 and we do not have to say much about him since so much has been written about him in the past and probably will be in the future. His son, Werner Fricker, Jr. was president from 1998 to 2004. Both played soccer at our club, held many positions, and danced with the Sport Club and/or the Cultural Group. Werner Fricker III, son and grandson, is presently a dancer with our groups, the House Chairman and the General Manager of your Major Soccer Team. Andrew Weyershaeuser became president in 1980 and served to 1986. Andy was involved in many club areas including cultural, soccer and social. His son Andrew J. Weyershaeuser has been our Vice president for sixteen years, Soccer Director for many years, played soccer with our teams and was a dancer in our groups. His son Andrew R. Weyershaeuser also participated in our Cultural Group and continues playing soccer for our teams. John Blank followed Andy as president in 1986 serving until 1990 when his son John M. Blank took over the presidency. Both Blanks held many positions at our club as John began as a teenager in both soccer and cultural activities while John M. began as a young boy in both activities. Both were involved in many areas and some of their grandchildren are involved at our club. Their son and grandson John M. Blank, Jr. participated in our youth (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

KEVIN NOVALSKI, 22, better known as Soop, a nickname that came from a previous soccer coach at the club, became a member of the United German Hungarians through the youth soccer program. He started out playing for the U.G.H. Fire at the age of seven. Kevin currently plays soccer in the Men’s Summer League. Though he started as a young soccer player, now you might recognize him behind the bar on Tuesdays, and on other club events. “I’d have to say that my favorite part about bartending at U.G.H. is getting to know all the members,” Soop described. He likes being in a setting where he can befriend people, as well as being a representative for the club when new people come. A graduate from Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, Kevin spent his four years playing soccer and tennis for the Vikings. He now attends Cairn University for a Biblical Studies Bachelor’s degree with social work emphasis. Though Soop’s heritage is mainly Polish, he embraces and takes part in the German lifestyle. In June 2013, he traveled with us to Sandusky, Ohio for the 24. Gaufest. “I was totally thrown into a culture I thought I knew about and was blown away by the dedication and depth,” he said describing his first Gauverband experience. He even wore his first pair of lederhosen! Kevin says his favorite part about the Cultural Group is their dedication and enthusiasm, along with the “wood chopping dance” (the Holzhacker) which is performed at Rocktoberfest and Oktoberfest! We are lucky to have a loyal bartender, club supporter, and all around great person like Soop! Karina www.ughclub.us

MONTHLY PROGRESS

—’USL OF PA’ CONTINUED—

—’NAMES’ CONTINUED—

The addition of these three new clubs as members of the United Soccer League reextends the reach of the league to areas that are part of its history. Up and coming clubs like Lancaster, “The Brick City Boys,” recognize the history and level of competition and their entry recalls notable founding clubs like the Reading Americans. New Jersey teams over the years have found places in the United Soccer League. Trenton G.A.K. and Germania Camden come to mind. The two new teams recently accepted into the league follow this tradition. The South Jersey Elite Barons began as a youth academy club and has recently started an adult men’s team. The Ocean City Nor’easters soccer franchise of the Premier Development League has also started an amateur team and both of these clubs seek to play in the high level of soccer competition offered by the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania.

Soccer program and in our Cultural Group Program until his move to Vail, Colorado where he has been living for 11 years. This article began as “Fathers and Sons” but as I wrote more and more, I realized that the name is not always the same and that many families have been active throughout the years, not only as presidents but also in many important positions. We continue next month. ef ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW:

—GOLF OUTING— The German Hungarians hosted the Second Annual Golf Outing at Bensalem Country Club on Friday August 8. Approximately thirteen foursomes teed off at 12:00pm and the outing proved to be a highly competitive one for the next few hours! The free beer on the course along with shots proved to dissuade some players, but not all! Team Malofiy was forced to defend their title as winners last year. The proof would be in the scores! The outing was luckily in the air for a beautiful August Friday. There were fullblown teams matched up and competitive play had begun with a scramble. Balls were flying through the air and golf carts tipping left to right. Just a few short hours later, scorekeeper Danielle Weyerhaeuser tallied up the scores for a three-way tie between team Malofiy, team Proll and team Wilkinson. There was only one way to break the tie, the German Hungarian Way. A drinking and soccer playoff in the clubhouse was set. In the end the last contender, Sasha Malofiy prevailed as he took a strategic approach that won them the trophy! Commemorative cigars and a fine prime rib dinner made the day turn into a long fun filled night. The schnapps poured promptly thereafter. Join us next year for the Third Annual Golf Outing!
