“We have that element of surprise on our side. That element of surprise combined with tested, tried and true club support at our back provides a foundation for seasons to come.” - Michelle Paul, Captain In just the last issue, Captain of our Major Women, Michelle Paul gave us an overview of a team with mostly new players, but still wearing the historic symbols and colors of our club. She told a positive and forward thinking story about a team with no where to go but up and a determination to get there. In a short time this team achieved a success of recognition in Eastern Pennsylvania. Yes maybe they had some element of surprise, and they certainly had club support, but they also worked together as a team to win when they had to win to move forward and eventually take the title and bring home the cup! We at the German Hungarians pride ourselves in traditions and their upkeep, and we recognize The Major Division Women lifting the EPSA Paul Stilley Memorial Cup on Sunday, March 26, 2017 after they won the competition in a 1:0 win the great foundation we stand on as an organizaover Lancaster City FC. tion. There are many footings in that slab and we still add some here and there. The Major Women added one this weekend. While a success is never a reason to rest on your laurels, it can be part of that foundation that Michelle told us about. We hope as a club that these players, and staff, and their supporters use this win as a base to build future successes on. We hope that with tested, tried, and true club support, our team will continue our proud traditions in every thing they do. Michael
WERNER FRICKER JR. INDUCTED INTO EAST PENNSYLVANIA HALL OF FAME On Saturday, February 25, Werner Fricker Jr. was inducted into the Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame. The induction took place at the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) Awards Banquet as it does yearly. The Fricker family as well as a number of our members attended the event at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. Many wonderful words were said that night but we believe these ones stood out: “To have a foundation like the German Hungarians….I wish everyone could have a foundation in this game like that.” from Werner Fricker Jr. The other inductees in 2017 were Peter Kennedy, Robert Ong, Paul Stilley, and Jeffrey DeLuca each of which have made their marks on our game in Eastern Pennsylvania. We as a club thank them. We thank Werner for his commitment to soccer and to his club, his foundation, the German Hungarians.

—107th ANNIVERSARY BANQUET— On Saturday, March 25th the German Hungarians once again gathered in our usual tradition for our Gala Anniversary Banquet. We uphold this tradition annually and each year some words come out of it worth printing here. This one came from the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. “To our differences, to our common ground. To what we’re seeking, to what we’ve found. To what brings us together, to what sets us apart. To many different people united with one heart! PROSIT!” - Chris Deely

It was indeed very heartwarming that you, Marlene, Werner and Susi made time to attend our banquet, despite having a prominent event at your own club. I commend you and the U.G.H. for being such wonderful ambassadors of our heritage and culture. Thank you so much! Peter Jauss President Cannstatter Volksfest Verein

—AMONG OUR MEMBERS— BY EMILY FRICKER After recently reporting that Liz Brenner finally had her back operation and was recuperating nicely, she fell and broke her hip. After surgery, she is now finally recuperating from all these incidents and we certainly wish her well. Get Well Soon, Liz! Remember, a few months ago, I reported that babies would be coming in the new year. Well they have started coming. Katie Tokarski Wills attended the Mid-Atlantic Competition with her new son, Declan and her father Ed attended our anniversary banquet recently. We were happy to see all three of them and hope to see the rest of the family at future events. Congratulations to Katie, her husband Mike and big brother Aiden too! Ann Truppay recently became a great grandmother! Pippa Rose Ratcliffe was born to Ann’s granddaughter, Elise and her husband Jeff on March 25. Congratulations to all and to the baby’s grandparents Michael and Mary Truppay. Christopher Deely, age 7 and member of our Cultural Group recently joined a sled hockey league for the handicapped and is enjoying this activity very much. Keep us informed, Christopher, we’d like to know how your team makes out. Many of our members take steps outside our organization to serve the greater community and in doing so they reflect prestige of our own club. Congratulations are in order to Michelle Paul who was elected as the General Secretary of the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania. We wish you luck and know you will make the club and the league proud. Allysa Reiter recently took a trip to Doylestown Hospital to treat an infection. She’s back out on the town now & we wish her well. A group of men and women attended the 144th Anniversary Banquet of the Cannstatter Volksfest Verein and the Anniversary Lunch of the Cannstatter Frauen Verein which had to be postponed for a week because of the snow. We all enjoyed ourselves and look forward to celebrating with our friends from all organizations. Sunday, March 19 was a nice Sunday at the clubhouse. We held our Annual AGM and it was quite productive. We were happy to see the core faces of our organization in attendance, though we wished more of our membership would have been there! Members of all ages enjoyed the day together with lunch, refreshments and social moments that make our club what it is. ef www.ughclub.us

—GERMAN HUNGARIANS RUN 5K—
“She Believes,” is a message that is sent to young girls by the United States Women’s National Team. Young girls can accomplish their dreams if they set their goals and work hard to meet them. Confidence on and off the soccer field comes in a variety of different ways. Cultivating and empowering young women to set and reach their goals is every coach or mentor’s dream. Coaches and Trainers truly don’t receive enough credit for what they do. They impact the lives of others and show our youth soccer players how to set a goal, meet it and then sometimes exceed that goal. They teach how players how to face fears and power through the obstacles, individually or as a team. The female soccer initiative is resonating all over the globe. Following the encouragement of “She Believes,” the courage facebook.com/GermanHungarians

and desire to run a 5K took place with our own German Hungarian team, the Panthers Coached by Cathy Ford & Jen Heutger. The Panthers is a team, on and off the field. They win together, lose together, train together and set goals together. They work hard to take their game to the next level. The idea for the team to run a 5K seemed impossible. They trained as much as possible in preparation for their debut. Coach Jen is a marathon runner and has worked hard for her team to develop the love of running to promote conditioning and agility. Encouraging and mentoring, facing the fear, reaching the finish line seemed impossible. You could see it on their faces before the race and once they crossed the finish line. Coach Jen ran along side of them, motivating, pushing them, giving them the will to cross the finish line – together, as a team. Saturday, April 1, 2017, it was no April Fool’s joke, ready to go on a rainy and cold April morning, the Panthers powered through it. As a team, they pushed themselves to accomplish a 5K. Team participants included Regan Keely, Abby Roth, Alessia Baricelli, Colette Weidle, and Jessica Gross let by Coach Jen. Dare to Dream. Be inspired, be the inspiration for others to follow.
