—WHAT IS AMATEUR SOCCER?— Some part of me felt like this match was ours to win. Some part of me said that the German Hungarians take a tiny ounce of ownership of this cup because it’s got our man’s name on it. Was I wrong? I don’t think I was despite the big loss we ended the night with. What I realized was that it wasn’t our ownership to win it. It was our ownership to enter it, promote it, play in it, and keep it going. Yes, even if that means being shellacked 4:0. A few days ago, a fellow member messaged me saying “No one loves that team or U.G.H. more than you.” That made me feel good that someone would notice the passion I have and comment on it in such a nice way. It’s not totally true, however, because there are a whole heap of us that care about the club and our team that much. The same way that our club takes ownership over the competitions we play so that they are continued, the individuals that make up our club take ownership of the team, the badge, to make sure that it continues. We might miss games for other club commitments, but we are following along on our phones and in our hearts because we love the club, the team, and the game. It’s no different in countless amateur soccer clubs across the country. Veteran clubs stick around because of people that care, and newly formed ones get to be veteran ones for the same reason. That is Amateur Soccer. Michael

So, my team lost last night. They lost big. I’m talking four goals to our big zero. I wasn’t there at the match because the club was hosting two big local semifinal matches in the Philadelphia Catholic league. That’s high school level and that’s also when all the rents and such still come to their kids’ matches. So, while I was working at the club, the boys were out in West Chester for the first-round match of the local East Penn Open Cup. That’s the one USASA named for my grandfather before they scratched it off the docket nationally. That cup still means a lot to clubs out there and that’s why they still play it. When our GM, who happens to be my brother W3, sent me this picture before kickoff I for some reason felt like this match meant a little more because it’s got Werner Fricker’s name on it and besides him being my family Editor’s Note: originally published on 10/26/2017 at www.amateurcupmedia.com he’s considered the “human dynamo” of the German Hungarians.

—CORNER KICKS— The adult teams have all shut down play for the winter but we wanted to inform you all of the status of the teams in league standings at the end of the first half of the season. The Major Division Men are in 5th place in the United Soccer League (USLPA) with a record of 3-1-3. On a brighter note the Major Division II are in first in their division. The side has a record of 5-1-0. Here’s to holding the top spot when the spring season comes! Congratulations boys! The Major Division women are sitting in second place in their division only behind the Ukrainian Nationals. Our gals have a record of 5-1-4. They are only a point behind the Ukrainians so lets hope they can maneuver ahead in the spring. The Over-30 division team has a record at this time of 2-4-2 and are sitting in fourth place. Champions of the East Penn Amateur and Open Cups have also already been determined. East Penn has already determined their champions for the Amateur and Open Cups. While our German Hungarians didn’t take the titles this year we do wish our fellow clubs luck in the further rounds! On Sunday, December 3, Vereinigung Erzgebirge took the Eastern Pennsylvania Werner Fricker Open cup title. The match ended regulation with a 1:1 draw. Erzgebirge scored three goals on the first 15 minute overtime. Then they put another past the keeper in the second making the final score Erzgebirge 5:1 Phoenix SC. On Sunday, December 10 West Chester United took the East Penn US Amateur Cup title in a 5:0 win over their reserve side. We will update you again in the spring when matches are scheduled! See you all in the corner! www.ughclub.us

Congratulations to Michael Fricker and Allyssa Schulz on their recent engagement. Michael is the editor of this newsletter, and has been a dancer in our Cultural Group for over twenty years, and his girlfriend, Allyssa, is a member of the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe of the Delaware Saengerbund of Newark Delaware. Allyssa has also become a member of our club and has danced with our group for about two years. Michael has become a member of the Delaware Saengerbund and has helped the Enzian Dance Group a few times when necessary. Our deepest sympathy to Jerry and BobbyAnn Lineman on the death of Jerry’s father Gerard R. Lineman Sr. in October. Mr. Lineman was a resident of Glenside for many years and his Funeral Mass was held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church on Easton Road in Glenside. The Lineman’s daughter, Jenn, has been a member of our dance group for many years. Our condolences to the entire Lineman Family. Sorry to hear that Katie Palnik had serious surgery at Abington Hospital in November. John M. Blank, one of our former presidents, had a massive heart attack and had to have surgery. He recuperated at Abington Hospital. George Gouger, a former member of the Heimatklänge Orchestra and the famous baker of Holmesburg Bakery in Philadelphia, was diagnosed in need of heart surgery prior to a shoulder operation. Keep all in your prayers and hopefully all will soon be well. Katie Magin recently had hip surgery and her friends were all surprised to see her a few weeks later driving her car and enjoying lunch with a group of friends. Great News! John M. Blank, Jr. of Vail, Colorado, was able to visit his family and friends for a few days in November. Visiting his father, who had a heart attack and bringing along his daughter Avery, his entire family had a chance to meet this wonderful little girl who was then 6 months old. John and Avery were able to spend Thanksgiving and his cousin

Mikaela’s Birthday Party with family and friends. We were glad to see them both, only sorry it was under such serious circumstances. Congratulations to Jakob Hubert, who was named Freshman Most Valuable Player at Roman Catholic High School for his playing on Roman’s soccer team. Jakob has also played for our youth soccer teams and is also a member of our dance group. Congratulations also to Sarah Fetzer, our dancer Karl Fetzer’s wife. Sarah was recently recognized by the PA Library Association of Northampton Township as a Reference Librarian receiving an Honors Award for originality, inventive ability, and demonstration of promise of continued growth in Librarianship. Mikaela Malofiy had a magnificent 21st Birthday Party the day after Thanksgiving. We all congratulate her and wish her the best. She has been a member of our Cultural Group as long as she can remember and is presently a junior at Widener University where she is also on their women’s soccer team. One of our favorite Children’s Dance Group members, Christopher Deely, recently acquired a new pet, two new pets in fact. Bunnies and they’re named Coco and Teddy. Hopefully they don’t give Mom and Dad too much work. Our deepest sympathy to the Phoenix club on the death of Betty Woytowitch (nee Groeber). Betty was a lifelong member of the Phoenix Club and was very active in many areas especially with the Ladies Auxiliary in recent years. She was the wife of the late ‘Whitey” Woytowitch, a well- known “goalie” in local soccer circles. We wish her daughters and their families our deepest sympathy. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Stefan Walter, who died recently. Stefan was born in the former Yugoslavia in September of 1935 and had to flee the area with his family at the end of WW II. He became a member of the Sport Club Dance Group and was an active member of our club for many years. Stefan is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Loni (nee Konradt). They had four daughters, three of whom were active in our Cultural Group. He is also survived by two siblings, Elizabeth Wagner and Joseph Walter. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Southampton and he was buried at St. John Neumann Cemetery in Chalfont.

The Kirchweih Strauss was decorated with colorful silk ribbons and was carried by the “Geld Herr”, Dan Galgon , and his wife, Brianne. Dan also said the “spruch” (speech) which he said in German. He did a great job, but I have been told by some other dancers that unfortunately many are 2nd and 3rd generation Americans and can no longer understand German. So here goes! These are the translated words Danny spoke:
