—A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE— Christmas is a special time, which is filled with peace and love, and I always find joy in reminiscing over the past year. It was a year filled with many events and special occasions for the German Hungarians and for me personally. I am very proud of our members and the level of participation culturally and through soccer. Our Cultural Group, which includes our Children and Schuhplattler dancers, participated in the Mid-Atlantic Jugend Einzel Preisplatteln Competition and Kinderfest events, North American Landestreffen der Donauschwaben in Kitchener and they represented our Club very well, with our flag, in Haldenwang, Germany and also participated in the Bayerische Löwe. These are just a few of the highlights as they are extremely active all year long. On the soccer side, the GH Men won their 3rd US National Donauschwaben Championship on home soil and took home, for the first time, the Mike Talan Wanderpokal and our Over-30 Men won the State Cup. Our Men’s and Women’s teams are very active in league play and USASA competitions. Our monthly Schnitzel Dinners, 108th Anniversary Banquet Celebration, Oktoberfest, Kirchweih and Annual Christmas Party are the affairs we love and where we continue our proud traditions! It is at all of these events that we experience social recreation and camaraderie and I am truly thankful for that. We are very excited to open a new chapter in our organizations history where we will have a bright future. For many years, it has been a financial struggle to maintain our current property. It became clear that it would be difficult to continue under our current business plan. As we were deciding how to move forward, we were presented with a very good opportunity, which was to sell our property. This would relieve us from the financial burden of maintaining our property yet still permitting us to continue to have our home and events at 4666 E Bristol Road. This opportunity ensures a strong future allowing us to concentrate and thrive in culture, soccer and social activities. Our cultural and soccer programs remain a core of what our members and families do. We could not be happier to have sold the property to a United German Hungarian family, Joe and Cindy Proll. The new property owners, The Prolls, will be operating as Trifecta Sporting Club and will be utilizing the property as a multi-sport facility open to the public for field rentals and usage. The catering hall and bar is available for rentals and the hosting of events to members and the community. A variety of services will also be available for the sports community. Our very own United German Hungarians Major teams will continue to play their home games in the stadium as usual. The United German Hungarians are and will remain actively involved in the local community, Verband der Donauschwaben of U.S.A, Gauverband Nordamerika, and US Soccer through the United States Adult Soccer Association. We will continue to embrace these umbrella organizations and relationships, which provide their members with a variety of opportunities while continuing proud traditions. The United German Hungarians will continue to hold various regional and national events at our home in Oakford. During the season, take the time to reminisce and I hope you have the same feelings of joy when thinking about where you have been and what you have done. Looking to 2019, live today and let it be your best year yet! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Janet Fricker Malofiy PRESIDENT

It is January 2019 and a new year has begun. We probably should look to the future with anticipation but I also feel we should look to the past. Just a few minutes ago I approached an area where I keep old club information. There in the middle of a box was a Monthly Progress sticking up above the others that read, “HAPPY NEW YEAR.” The date was January, 2014. This is only five years ago. That issue was similar to all issues. It included an editorial on past traditions, a schedule for events of 2014, articles about soccer, our Cultural Group, also about the Bavarian Club and their future events and more. Think about the past and talk to our officials, the Executive Board, members of the Board of Governors, our Chairmen and committee members. Tell them what you would like to see repeated in the future or maybe what new things you might like to see. Let’s Continue our Proud Traditions! The last “Among Our Members column was written quite a while ago for the November issue. I will try to update information for this column. (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)

—AMONG OUR MEMBERS— (CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE) Head Coach of our Major Men, Jason Karasow and Ashleigh Sicilia were married in June at St, John Bosco Church in Hatboro. Their reception was at the Rose Bank Winery in Newtown. Cultural Group members, Alex Blank and Jenn Lineman were married on November 23 at Queen of Peace Church in Ardsley. Their Reception was at the Warrington Country Club. Editor of this newspaper, Michael Fricker and Allyssa Schulz, of Newark, DE were married on December 15 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Horsham. The couple, who both dance with their respective clubs had their reception at the Northampton Valley Country Club in Richboro. I heard that all 3 weddings were wonderful and all had a great time, Die Heimatklänge were on hand at the Lineman/Blank wedding and the Schulz/ Fricker wedding which were typical German-American weddings. We congratulate all three couples. Werner Fricker III, was the “Geldherr,” at our Kirchweih in November and many couples participated in this “Banater,” fest dressed in typical outfits. The Strauss was won by Cindy Proll and her husband Joe. We wish the Prolls good luck especially in their endeavor with the newly formed “Trifecta Sporting Club.” Mikaela Malofiy, was recently honored to receive the 2018 Ichiban Award as a Coach/Division Specialist with the Union Soccer Schools. Mikaela who worked a the various camps this summer met wonderful people and had great experiences. Homeowners Michelle Paul, an active member at the club in various areas, especially soccer and dancing, and John McFadden, recently purchased their first home in Langhorne, Best of luck to them both. Happy 21st Birthday to Stevie Paul, who recently celebrated and will be travelling abroad, studying in Rome, Italy for sixteen weeks this spring. Stevie is a Junior at Thomas Jefferson University. www.ughclub.us
Anika Mahadevan, a member of our Cultural Group and the daughter of Raman and Karen David Mahadevan was awarded a scholarship to Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School and will be attending School there in September 2019. Cultural Group member Sofi Walter, and Patty Maged were recently engaged. Congratulations to them both! Sorry to hear that Eva Martini, of the Trenton Donauschwaben had a very serious car accident. She was hospitalized quite some time and needed a few operations. She is now in rehab and we wish her well. Eva is the wife of Adam, the mother of Hans, and the grandmother of Anna, Louisa, and Chrissy. Anna is an active dancer in our Cultural Group and the entire family attends many of our events. Eva we are all praying for you and look forward to seeing you in the future. Concordia Trust, a group which cultivates and promotes the German Language and cultural experience, recently made donations to various local groups to support the activities of their children and youth groups. A beautiful photo of our Kirchweih group and a thank you letter from us written by Karina Fricker, appeared in their November 2018 issue of Concordia’s newsletter. Now comes all the sad parts. Frances Gehlert (nee Hutchinson), age 54, was the wife of Ernie Gehlert, a former member of both sports and cultural programs. Her funeral was on October 2 and the Kirk and Nice Funeral Home in Feasterville. Frances was the stepmother to Justin and Ashlee Gehlert and the daughter in law to Klaus and Hedy Gehlert. She will be missed by all who knew her. Kurt Weyershaeuser, age 56, died on October 12. Kurt was the son of Andrew and Regina Weyershaeuser, the father of Fallon Merrigan and Gabriel Weyershaeuser. He is also survived by his brother Andrew Jr. And his family. Kurt was also the grandfather of Joseph Merrigan. All were shocked at Kurt’s sudden death and |

he will always be remembered for his happy ways, his friendly greeting to all he met. Guenter Magin, age 82, died on November 17. Guenter was born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in Germany. He came to the U.S.A. in the early 50s and began playing soccer with our Major Team. He met Katherine Wirsz at our club and they were married in 1958. Soon afterwards Guenter was drafted into the armed forces. He is survived by his wife of 60 years and 2 children, Thomas Magin and Christine Buchanan, both who were involved as youth in our Cultural and soccer programs. Guenter is also survived by an uncle and nephew in Germany. A memorial mass was held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Southampton. His burial was at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery. Anton “Tony” Walter, age 81, of Rockledge died on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the St. John Neumann Center. Tony was born in Bukin, Yugoslavia and suffered through the ravishes following WWII. He is the father of Lorraine Walter (husband James Lostteter), Robert Walter (wife Kim) and Caty Poole (Husband Michael Spicer), grandfather of Sofi, Nicholas, Emma Walter, Jordan and London Poole, brother of the late Joe Walter and longtime companion of Patricia Treacy. Tony came to the U.S.A. at age 15 and later graduated from Trenton Central High School. He made his living as a tool and die maker but his passion was playing tenor saxophone leading the Tony Walter band. He played at most local German-American clubs and many enjoyed his music. He was proud of his ancestors and was a loyal member of the Trenton Donauschwaben. A memorial luncheon was held in his honor on Monday, January 7 at the Austrian Village. Our deepest sympathies to all our deceased’s families and their loved ones.
