—MIXING IT UP— For two years now we have hosted the illustrious Alex Meixner Band on a Thursday night in May and though at first many of our group were skeptical of making an event work like that on for lack of a better term a “school night,” its been successful both years! This year we are having the band and the front man again but we will be, shall we say, Mixing It Up! This year we will hold the event on Friday, May 10, 2019 right in the heart of Oakford. It can’t be anything but more successful for us moving to the Friday date. The event is a great night out at the club with food, drink, good music, and dancing. Mark your calendars to join us for this social affair because as a club we must remember that being together is what keeps everything going. . If you have been to the event the last two times, make sure you attend again! If you haven’t joined us for this affair before, consider it. Mix up your plans for this coming May and join us at Trifecta Sporting Club to dance and listen to the Alex Meixner Band! Michael

—STRENGTH & UNITY—

For many years we have tagged a lot of the things we do and most of the things we write with the slogan, "Continuing a Proud Tradition!" It has been and will continue to be a wonderful sentiment for us. If you read the 75 Years of Soccer history from 1997 you will see a word that appears over and over again in each section of the account. The word is "continue," or the variations of it and the document ends with a thought that was adapted and spread to the entire organization. "We have made many contributions to amateur soccer. As we proudly bear the name UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS, we are…Continuing a Proud Tradition." At this time of transition many things may change about what and how we do, but they will change for the better and

all the while the traditions continue along. That is why we have made the changes we have made. Continuity is important in that it has propelled us this far. Through every change the organization and the people have made through over 100 years we have maintained a continuity of who we are and the things we do, together. Togetherness is another necessary part of this whole grand experiment we call club life. Thriving as an organization we need to stick together, truly as a family.

—IN THE KITCHEN WITH JENN— St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner and I am turning to the Landesverband Frauengruppe Cookbook for a Shepherd's Pie recipe. Shepherd's Pie, a popular dish in the UK and Ireland, is typically made with lamb; however, Anna Wiegert’s (Chicago Donauschwaben) “Shepherd’s Pie-German Style” is made with beef and pork. It is topped with mashed potatoes and Anna's addition of bacon. Shepherd's Pie was originally created to transform leftovers into a new, more appealing dish. I seem to always find myself with leftover mashed potatoes that end up in the trash after drying out in the refrigerator for three days. This recipe allows you to incorporate leftover potatoes into your next meal. Although the bacon is optional, I found that it played a key role in the recipe especially if you are using leftovers that need to be brought back to life. While in some Shepherd's Pie recipes you may find vegetables, Anna Wiegert's recipe is simpler allowing you to serve it with any vegetable you like on the side. I served mine with Cincinnati Donauschwaben’s “String Beans with Fresh Parsley Sauce,” found on page 164 of the

Landesverband Frauengruppe Cookbook. The string beans lightened up the meal by adding freshness to the rich and hearty pie. I look forward to making both of these recipes again. The string beans were delicious and the sauce came together very quickly. As for the Shepherd’s Pie, I could not get enough. Anna Wiegert took an Irish dish and added German flavors to create a mouth-watering blend of cultures. You are definitely going to go back for more.

I want to share with you something that Frank Kirsch wrote in his address for the "Gala Festivities Celebrating the Grand Opening of our Modern Club Facilities," in 1966. "I would like to express my personal thanks to the Officers, the Ladies Section, the Soccer Teams, the various committees and members who have aided in this Building Program. Let us remain 'UNITED' for in Unity there is Strength. Your President, FRANK N. KIRSCH." In unity there does lie strength. In fact it Jenn Blank was a popular sentiment around this time. It appears another time in print in Shepherd’s Pie German Style (Grumbeere und Fleisch Kuchen) this same souvenir book.
