- Jim Segredo, President
Dear Alumni and Friends of Montini Catholic, As you can see from this edition of Bronco Express, our students, faculty and staff have been very busy, not only with their daily work in the classroom, but with after-school and outside programs and activities. The college preparatory education for our students goes beyond the classroom. Participation in extracurricular activities greatly enhances their high school experience and provides them with opportunities to grow academically, to develop leadership and social skills, and the opportunity to grow in their faith. Two of our most active and innovative extracurricular programs are our Robotics Team and Flight Club (page 9). Led by Technology Director, Peter Farina ‘87, the programs, both part of our STEM program, provide students with hands-on experience in project base learning. Our students develop skills in design, building, programming, collaboration - while enhancing their leadership and communication skills through robotics competitions and demonstrations. I would also like to congratulate Mr. Farina on being recognized by the Diocese of Joliet for his leadership in the Diocese Technology Committee and advancing technology in the diocesan grade schools. This past year, Mr. Farina and members of his Robotics and Flight Clubs have conducted presentations and demonstrations at 12 Catholic grade schools. He also hosts our annual M-TEC competition for grade school students. We are blessed to have excellent Lasallian Educators like Mr. Farina, who give countless hours of their personal time to teach and guide our students. As we conclude our 53rd school year, I congratulate and thank Jim Izzo ’71, Peter Lewek and Hilda Castor, who will be retiring at the end of the 2018-19 school year. Mr. Lewek has been an outstanding member of our Social Studies department and had an distinguished career as a teacher and administrator at Driscoll Catholic before joining the Montini Catholic community 12 years ago. Mrs. Castor has been a valued member of our World Languages department and a great participant in our Community Service Learning program for the last 14 years. Jim Izzo, a member of the MCHS Hall of Fame and IWOCA Hall of Fame has been a dedicated and talented member of the Montini Catholic school community as a teacher, coach, administrator and department chair for the last 44 years. All three of these dedicated and hard working teachers have been awarded the Lasallian Educator Award and will be truly missed. I also want to congratulate Peter Cappetta ’07 and Glenn Shimkus ‘88 for their recent election to the Montini Catholic Hall of Fame (page 13). Peter and Glenn will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Friday, September 6, 2019 at half time of the Broncos vs. Collins varsity football game, our home opener. They will be joining the 137 members of the Montini Catholic Hall of Fame. Finally, we are very excited about the next renovation project of our 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign that will take place this summer. Due to a very generous campaign gift from Board of Director member, Leigh-Anne Kazma, her parents, Gerry and Margaret and the Kazma Family Foundation, the computer center-which consists of two computer labs, office space and server room will be totally renovated into a Maker's lab (page 8). This will be a great educational facility for our students and a great addition to our STEM program. We are sincerely thankful and grateful to Leigh-Anne and the Kazma family for providing the funding for this exciting project. As always my sincere appreciation to all the members of our school community for your support and generosity this year and in past years. Because of you, we are able to provide an outstanding, well-rounded, Catholic, Lasallian college preparatory education to all our students. Again thank you and "May Jesus Live In Our Hearts...Forever.” Have a great summer. Yours truly,

This year was declared by Pope Francis to be a Jubilee Year honoring the saint who passed away on (Good Friday) April 7, 1719. On Friday, April 5th the school was presented with a '1st Class relic' of the saint and held a special prayer reception to honor the occasion. (A 1st Class relic is a small part of the saint's body.). The relic is from the Generalate in Rome - the main offices and headquarters of the Christian Brothers. It is currently traveling from Lasallian school to Lasallian school and was displayed in the school's chapel during the week of April 8 through the 12th. (The relic was delivered to Montini Catholic by a representative of De La Salle High School.) "As we celebrate the 300th anniversary of his death, let us pray to St. John Baptist de la Salle to intercede for us that our youth will be instruments in building and promoting a culture of life and love," said Campus Minister Michael Blanchette during the prayer service held upon the acceptance of the relic. Math students celebrated Montini's 26th annual Pi Day on March 14th. Department Chair, Chrissy (O’Neill) McManus ‘88 helped plan many activities to commemorate the day. One such activity is the 'Bridge Building' contest for math students. (Pi is used in most calculations for building and construction, air travel and space flight, to name a few.). This year the winning team's bridge held 2,600 grams. The team consisted of juniors, Jimmy Porada, Rocco Catalano and Sarah Gaffney. (The record for holding the most weight of 6,000 grams remains with Gianna LoVerde and Desiree Hill from our Class of 2016!)

Senior Quincey Trojanowski is our Bronco Artist of the Month for March. "Quincey is a very talented artist and musician. She has a natural gift for both of the arts. She has been very dedicated in the class and has made multiple pieces for each project," said Department Chair, Stephanie Kuecker. Quincey is currently a Design II student. She will be majoring in Bassoon Performance in college (she spent her summer on tour with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America which took her to Carnegie Hall). She hopes to be able to fit her love of drawing in her schedule. "Most of my 'non-academic' classes will be music-based, but I plan to keep art in my life as a hobby!"
Drama students are basking in the glow of the success of their 2019 Spring Musical. This year, the team performed in 'The Little Mermaid' on Thursday, February 28th through Sunday, March 3rd. Senior, Kailey Ryan (pictured above with Alessandra Geraci and Johathan McNamara) played Ariel. Members of the unique ministry team were visited by Father Bryan (above), from the Missionaries of the Poor, and Sr. Divine and Sr. Verna, from the Compassionate Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, earlier this year (February 8th). Father Bryan enthusiastically led the students in song and prayer as he informed them about the work done by his ministry, encouraged them to give thanks for their abundant blessings and inspired them to help the poor of Haiti. "This food drive did not have incentives or prizes," said Michael Blanchette, Campus Minister. "Our Peer Ministers agreed that we should do this from the heart, not expecting anything in return.” The food drive was called the '1- 4 Haiti Lenten Food Drive.'

Summer 2019
The 2019 March for Life was held in Washington D.C. on January 18th with the theme, 'Unique from Day One. Pro-Life is Pro-Science.' The historic march is now in its 46th year. Montini students have been loyally participating for over 16 years. Thirty-six students, accompanied by teachers, Mr. Denis Block and Ms. Katie Wall, braved the bitter cold and traveled through the night, by bus, to arrive at their destination. The 15-hour journey was made with fellow students from the Diocese of Joliet. The group attended the Mass for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as well as a Youth Rally prior to the march which featured many speakers including Vice President Mike Pence and political commentator, Ben Shapiro. "This was an excellent trip. Our students are always very engaged and focused on the cause," said Wall. "We talked about what we learned on the bus ride home and each one shared profound statements about how much they care about this issue and what they gained from the experience." She added. "They are truly focused on creating a culture of life in our school and world." Sophomore Megan Kosmach was honored to be able to attend what was her first March for Life and is hoping to be able to attend again with Montini next year. "Seeing all those people standing with me for one cause was really inspirational!" The march was also a first for sophomore Maria Hemmersmeier, whose brother, Jack (a junior), also attended the event. "I loved seeing how enormous the crowd was, and how many there were around my age," she said.

SCHOOL NEWS Senior Grania O'Flaherty* has attended three marches (and counting)! "It feels amazing to be a part of something bigger than myself. I was marching for those who cannot and that is what moves so many people about this March. It is for the babies and making life a possibility for all." This event was also a family affair for Grania whose sister, Enya* and brother Cillian* attended the march as well. "I am inspired by all moms in our world because they chose life for their children. They are the reason we are able to march!" Senior Nicholas Alandy was also proud to be returning from his third march. "I’ve gone every year minus freshman year when we got snowed out," he said. "It is always a great feeling to be a part of something bigger than yourself." Nicholas is greatly influenced by his grandmother who he credits for inspiring him to stand up for life. Junior Ashley Baka has attended two marches as a Bronco. "The Basilica is the most breathtaking church I have ever been in," she said, adding that she was grateful to be able to explore it before Mass. "Participating in the March has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. It is also so awesome to see that people are uniting for the betterment of the whole world and many generations to come." It is Ashley's dream, as well as the dream of all Montini marchers that one day there won't be a need to march to gain rights for the unborn.
Abby Michels, Young Lasallian Coordinator for the Midwest District, met with a group of senior leaders wanting to take a deeper look into the Lasallian mission. The three hour formation retreat included a review of St. John Baptist de La Salle's life, a reflection on their Lasallian vocation and a video creation segment where the students filmed people and places around the school showcasing how Montini practices Left to right: Maddie Merker, Nico Alandy, Joslyn Boyer and Mia Gramann Faith, Service and Community. “It is with hope that these students continue to cherish and practice the Lasallian values they have learned at Montini,” said Abby. “I hope that, by going through this formation experience, they will see their lives as a series of events where ‘one commitment leads to another’ - to find their Lasallian purpose.”

COVER STORY
Taking learning to
another level Montini Catholic Bronco Express
On the heels of a highly successful year of robotics competitions, drone flying, and roadshows, Montini’s Technology Director, Peter Farina ’88 is anticipating an even better year with the development of Montini’s Makerspace.
8
Thanks to the generosity of Board Member, Leigh-Anne Kazma, her parents Gerry and Margaret Kazma and the Kazma Family Foundation, Montini will begin construction on the Makerspace as soon as the last class bell rings. “Although many high schools are doing this type of lab, ours will be very different,” stated Mr. Farina, who explained that high schools, grade schools and even libraries have re-created the Makerspace concept to fit a variety of hobbies, including designing, building, sewing and crafting. “We are going back to basics and keeping our lab focused strictly on technology concentrating on 3D design and printing and robotics and drone design building.”
once deemed impossible. He believes that student collaboration and competition are key to learning, especially when it comes to technology. Montini Robotics students put their skills to the test every year by competing in several competitions including the Joliet Junior College Robotics Competition, College of DuPage’s Engineering Olympics and the Museum of Science and Industry’s Argonne
“Everything’s mobile!” says Farina, when asked to describe the new space. “At the heart of it - movable worktables with built-in power access so we’re not locked into one arrangement! We already focus on project based learning, but we’re about to take it to another level!” The possibilities are endless, according to Mr. Farina, who is looking forward to the ability for his classes to take on challenges that were Summer 2019
Competition. The completion of the Makerspace will crank their competition resume up a notch with the opportunity to compete at VEX - a global robotics competi-

tion featuring over 20,000 teams from 50 countries. “We didn’t have the means to compete at VEX before,” said Farina. “Now we will!” He is adamant about the importance of being able to compete in robotics competitions like VEX. “Competitions are an essential part of learning, They force you to dig deeper and develop your skills further.” In addition to the user friendly new lab layout and flexible furniture, the school will utilize an array of eight 3D printers, Dremel 3D 45EDU printers, and a 3D scanner. “These will be networked together to work as one unit,” explained Farina. “allowing the entire classroom to design together. We will be able to print very fast! It used to take several days to print projects - but now, students will be able to print their projects in one day!” Montini students will also have the advantage of utilizing two large (75 inch) display screens and an HD flexible mount document/ presentation camera. “I’ll be able to video my demonstrations and students can view them up-close onscreen.” He will also be better able to provide students with demonstration videos that they can accesss at home.
Computer students will also receive the ability to work on mobile laptop computers (also considered high end gaming laptops). “We will also use these for our Esports Team,” said Farina. “This is big in Asian countries right now and is quickly growing here in the United States. Colleges are offering scholarships in this area like never before.” (The IHSA Board just approved the formation of an Esports Advisory Committee in December of 2018 with the possibility of it becoming an official IHSA sport for 2020-21).

TECH FEST 2019 Congratulations to Technology Director, Peter Farina ‘87, who was recently honored at the Diocese of Joliet's Tech Fest ‘19. Peter was recognized for his contribution to the advancement of technology, both in and out of the classroom. Most recently, Pete has been in the spotlight among tech enthusiasts for spearheading Montini's Robotics Road Show taking his students’ knowledge of all things robotics ‘on the road’ to diocesan elementary schools. The show also features drone demonstrations by Pete and his newly formed 'Flight Club Drone Team.' To organize the visits, Pete diligently worked with tech coordinators in the Diocese of Joliet to bring his dreams of showcasing his students' abilities to younger students, in the hopes of inspiring future robotics enthusiasts.
Top: Peter Farina and assistant Paul Haines ‘13 test bridges at M-TEC; Bottom: Students from St. Pius X Parish School celebrated National Bullying Prevention Month with a drone shot - compliments of Pete and his Flight Club.
He also hosts and moderates Montini's Technology Engineering Competition (M-TEC) each year. The entire competition was conceptualized by Pete, who thoroughly enjoys hosting the day's competitions which involves three building challenges as well as two written challenges among participating teams. "I am impressed by the amount of interest in this event each year," he said. "It's always held on President's Day! Most kids would like to spend the day out of school - but these kids are all in, every year!"
"Pete is the proverbial 'IT' guy at Montini," said Principal Kevin Beirne. Mr. Beirne has worked with Pete over the last eleven years and together they worked to launch Montini's one-to-one Digital Learning Program (2015). "He fixes all devices, runs cable, soothes the frayed nerves of colleagues when laptop screens go blank," he added. "He finds wayward student devices misplaced in the building, is a social media sleuth extraordinaire, assembles countless bids for endless requisitions, images and re-images, and purposes and re-purposes dozens of laptops every summer! He's the printer whisperer, Apple TV magician and he single-handedly built Montini's entire network!" Beirne reiterated the fact that these roles constitute only a fraction of the importance Peter Farina plays in the school community. "His real impact can't be measured in bytes, keystrokes, codes, miles of cable or hundreds of devices," he said. "His impact is better told with terms of passion, dedication, vocation and generosity!"

Robotics is the future. Whether it’s facing-off with rivals in competitions or for college scholarships, with the development of the Makerspace, Montini students are well on their way to having a leg-up on the competition!
