e-learning DURING THE COVID CRISIS

FOUNDER’S DAY AWARDS

SPORTS wrap-up

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT “It’s the people who make a high school great, and at Montini Catholic, we have great people!” - Jim Segredo, President Dear Alumni and Friends, We recently completed our 2nd semester of the school year, one unlike any other in our history. I am extremely proud of the resilience and accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff. They have continued to work hard through our e-Learning program - demonstrating the very best of Montini Catholic. The positive comments that I have received have reinforced what I have always said and believe, that “it is the people who make a high school great, and at Montini Catholic, we have great people.” Understandably, our students, especially our seniors, were very disappointed in not being together for the last quarter of their school year. Not being on campus for classes, or being able to participate in extracurricular activities, retreats and sporting events, or to experience prom, the Academic Award ceremony, the end of the year barbeque, our Founder’s Day celebration and graduation has been very difficult and emotional for them - and all of us. During the last 2 and a half months of the e-Learning program, however, they maintained an excellent daily attendance record. They completed their assignments, tests and quizzes and their Bronco pride never wavered. (This summer we will do our very best to provide our seniors with a memorable graduation and hopefully, prom.) I also applaud the hard work and creativity of our faculty and staff, school administration and development team who have done their very best to maintain a sense of normalcy through e-learning, electronic and social media communications, zoom meetings, virtual activities and award ceremonies. We continue to pray for the health and safety of all the members of our school community, especially those, who themselves or had loved ones, contract the COVID-19 virus. We also pray for those who have been financially impacted over the past two months. I am proud that we were able to keep all members of the faculty and staff employed during this time and contracts were offered for the upcoming school year. The majority of our current families were able to meet their tuition obligations in April and May, which certainly helped us with cash flow. Several of our spring development activities and appeals were not as successful as in past years. Bottom line - we were able to keep our head above water and meet our financial obligations for the remainder of the school year. Unfortunately, a number our current families have been hit hard financially by the COVID -19 mitigation efforts. As a Lasallian school we are doing everything we can to help these families with their last tuition payments as well as provide additional financial assistance for the upcoming school year. In April we quickly established the ‘ONE MONTINI’ Tuition Assistance Fund. Currently, we have raised over $150,000. My deep appreciation goes to one of our alums and his wife for providing a lead gift of $100,000 to kick off the fund. Seventy-four families have been assisted, but there are more who need our help. If you weathered the financial storm this spring, I ask that you visit www.montini.org and consider making a gift to the ‘ONE MONTINI’ Fund.

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

As we plan for the upcoming school year, our top priority will remain the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff. There still remains a great deal of uncertainty about the ongoing impact of the virus from the standpoint of both health risks and any restrictions that may be imposed upon us in the future. Our overall school size and classroom size not only provides educational advantages, they also support greater social distancing. Under the leadership of Principal Kevin Beirne and Assistant Principal Sara Lhotka, our faculty, administration, and staff will be working very hard during the month of June to prepare for a range of possible scenarios to ensure a safe, continuous, and high-quality educational experience, nomatter the circumstances. We are working to expand safety measures, such as reductions in the density within our classrooms, cafeteria services, student transportation and other campus spaces. In collaboration with the Illinois Board of Education and the DuPage County Health Department we will follow COVID-19 testing, social distancing and contact tracing protocols. While no one can know for sure what the next few months will bring, we continue to move the school forward with improvements to our campus and educational facilities. Through donations from members of the school community, for specific projects identified in the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign, we will be conducting remodeling projects on the following facilities: The girls’ locker room area, the Ed & Pam Mack & Family Learning Resource Center, the auditorium and the Student Services Center. These improvements will be a nice boost to the morale of our students when they return to campus for the 2020-21 school year. Finally, I am certain that the next school year will be unlike any ever experienced and I ask that you keep us in your prayers. I am confident that, with your help, support and generosity, our students will continue to receive an outstanding education and we will come out of this pandemic a stronger and prouder school community. We are ONE MONTINI! “May Jesus Live In Your Hearts…Forever”. Stay healthy and safe. Sincerely, Throughout this issue of Bronco Express, we indicate legacy students (students of alumni) with an asterisk (*).

Photography teacher, Dina Kwit, took advantage of the unconventional circumstances created by the coronavirus shut down to teach her students the art of photojournalism - using the lens to capture a visual representation of an experience. "With the pandemic situation and on-line learning for students, I thought it would be a good idea for my students to be able to share their feelings about what is happening in their lives right now," said Dina, who tasked her students with capturing an image of how they are personally coping with the pandemic and writing a brief essay to accompany their photo. She was amazed at the results. With seniors struggling with their final months of school and athletes coming to terms with having no spring sports season, most acknowledged their distress. "I never expected to see such deep reflections on how their lives have changed. Some of the essays were very deep and revealed the physical and emotional struggles they’re going through.” "At first, many students were glad when schools decided to close due to the outbreak and thought of it as a relief," wrote senior, Connor Breck*. "We thought e-learning would be a breeze and this whole crisis would end shortly, and we would return to school, no problem. We were all extremely wrong about it." Along with his essay he included a photo of his desk, one that he feels relentlessly tied to throughout this experience. "The flow of the school day is usually very

smooth. Transitioning from class to class, interacting with friends and teachers, and the overall feel of the classroom setting makes a school day interesting and somewhat enjoyable," he shared. "We will not be able to take part in and enjoy most of the things that happen during senior year, whether that would be prom, graduation, or just hanging out with friends before we part ways. Instead we are all stuck at our desks all day and just doing school work and missing out on the fun of being at school." "Younger generations have never been through something this serious and it’s taking a huge toll on everyone, especially the youth," wrote sophomore Aracelly Baldo, whose black and white photo depicted an abandoned playground. "I wanted this image to convey that fun is put on hold. When one imagines a park they vision a vibrant play area with carefree children having the time of their lives playing. When someone looks at this photo, I want them to feel isolation and heartache to show how difficult life is at the moment. “This event really opened my eyes that we should never take things for granted in life." Senior Joey Knudtson* featured a more positive photo, one of his family playing games and reconnecting. "There are negative aspects, but positive ones as well - as families are rediscovering one another during this crisis," said Kwit. Overall, not being present at school for the last few months is a disappointment," summarized Connor. "I hope something like this won’t happen again so that other generations of students don’t have to go through what students are going through now."

LUKE RUFF AWARDED THE MOREAU SCHOLARSHIP Senior Luke Ruff has set his sights on becoming a Saint this fall - a Holy Cross College Saint, that is. Through the college's highly selective process, Luke has been awarded and recognized for his strong leadership skills and service with the Moreau Signature Scholarship at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame. Admissions Director, Jonathan Hake, was impressed with Luke after reviewing his achievements and interviewing him as a candidate for the prestigious scholarship.

from broncos to fighting irish! During their first ever Virtual Academic Awards Presentation, on May 7th, Montini Catholic announced Tess Noonan as Valedictorian and Kylie Boyer as Salutatorian for the Class of ‘20. Coincidentally, both Bronco scholars, who are best friends and were also comrades on the Volleyball court, will meet again in the fall as Fighting Irish when they pursue their dreams at the University of Notre Dame. Tess Noonan, from Willowbrook, will be majoring in Biology and Spanish on a Pre-Med track. She admits, however, that it was the faith life at Notre Dame that really stood out to her. "I loved how much faith is incorporated into their daily lives on campus and can’t wait for that next year!" Tess applied to thirteen colleges before honing her sites on two of her favorite, Notre Dame and Saint Louis University. "I always had Notre Dame as one of my top picks and when I got accepted in December I was so excited! I have been a Notre Dame fan since I was a kid and I still have the tickets of the first game my dad ever took me to!" Since she had kept other schools on her radar, Tess was determined to weigh her many options. She felt reassured, however, by the current Notre Dame students who reached out to her and answered her many questions.

"It’s amazing that our encouragement and teamwork in athletics and academics has led Tess and me to such an amazing college opportunity together. We helped and encouraged each other at Montini, and I truly believe that we each played a part in the other’s success" concluded Kylie. "I just can't wait to continue to grow together and encourage each other at Notre Dame!"

Luke is looking forward to attending Holy Cross where the school's mantra is 'Scholar, Citizen, Leader, Disciple.' "The direct link that Holy Cross has to Notre Dame and St. Mary's will make this an interesting tri-campus experience.” The Driscoll Scholars Program allows for a 2 year experience at Holy Cross and 2 years at Notre Dame - graduating from Notre Dame!"

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

Kylie Boyer, from Downers Grove, shares Tess' enthusiasm for their shared future at Notre Dame. She will be majoring in Preprofessional Studies (Pre-Med). Kylie has always been a Notre Dame fan. "My dad (Brooks Boyer) actually played basketball at Notre Dame (90-94)!" She was also impressed with her experience at the Notre Dame Summer Scholars Camp she attended last summer.

"The interview was both formal and conversational in nature," said Luke, who plans on majoring in Biology, specifically Agricultural Science. He met with the chair of the Biology Department. "I had breakfast with the Vice President of the college, toured the campus, attended Mass and had a root beer float!" (Notre Dame's traditional Root Beer Float Masses are held every Wednesday.) He was very excited to be able to tour the Notre Dame campus while there.

Ms. Steiner and her Student Government representatives also hosted a Hall Decorating Contest between the grades with the seniors taking the prize for the best decorated hallway. It was the sophomores, however, who pulled out a huge upset during the pep assembly 'dance off' between the classes.

COVER STORY

@HOMe

This spring our Montini Catholic community was provided an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate just what makes our Lasallian school so special. Everyone has joined together to make the best of a very challenging circumstance.

On Thursday, March 12th - Montini Catholic faculty/staff and families (along with the rest of the country) were forced to face the announcement that no one, at the time, could fully comprehend - “We will be switching to an at home/online learning format until further notice.” Not quite grasping the enormity of the situation, students were elated - seniors not realizing that they had taken their last walk down the halls as a Montini Catholic student. Despite the ,instantaneous modification to the final quarter - faculty and staff members, under the leadership of President Jim Segredo and Principal Kevin Beirne, transitioned quickly into digital learning mode. We sat down with Principal Beirne to chat about the transition and how, as a school community, Montini is coping. Could you have ever predicted a scenario such as this happening at Montini? My hope is that what we’re all experiencing right now is a once in lifetime event. While I could never have envisioned a scenario such as this, I’m certain our experience during it will better help us predict and manage future catastrophic events, should they occur. On a personal level, I’ve been impacted in much the same ways as other people. I’m grateful that my family is safe and healthy and to date, our community has been largely spared from a substantially negative impact from the virus. What actions/ programs were in place at that helped our school to be prepared for this sudden e-Learning switch-over?

Summer 2020

COVER STORY Some of the changes we've implemented in the last few years, while not intended to prepare us for these two months, have fortuitously made our transition a lot smoother than it might have otherwise been. In our sixth year of the Digital Learning Initiative, our students and teachers were equipped with the technology and the skills to use that

ourselves in currently. I find myself often answering questions with something along the lines of, ”I’m just not sure about that at the moment” or “when we have more clarity about that issue, we’ll let you know.” This lack of clarity and uncertainty about what the near and long term future looks like has been really difficult for all of us.

“Thank you! I am so impressed with how Montini is handling distance learning. As I talk to my friends who have children at other schools it's clear that Montini is well ahead of the curve. I thank you for all the extra efforts you and the teachers have been putting in during this time!” - Bronco Parent

How is the faculty/staff staying connected, updated and informed? I’ve realized that a lot of communication during a regular school day happens during informal conversations with people in the building. Those informal interactions aren’t really possible while we’re all at home. As a result, we’ve added more formal communication streams. Our academic departments, Academic Advisory Council, and School Management Team have significantly increased the frequency of meetings. We’ve also added a weekly faculty meeting and had a very successful faculty social utilizing meeting rooms on Zoom! In addition to all these virtual meetings, we’ve also had great success sharing information, best practices, e-Learning ideas, and successes and failures using a shared Google Drive for all things related to the school shutdown.

technology for teaching and learning in a remote and digital environment. We’ve also been working on new, innovative, and more authentic ways to assess student progress. Assessment in a remote learning environment is one of the biggest challenges. This work is not new to us, but we are constantly perfecting it. Lastly, we’ve had a virtual learning day protocol in place for two years for emergency school closings, so we were equipped with at least rudimentary plans to move into e-Learning and had done some of the front work in discussing what that change would look like.

With the situation changing daily, how difficult has it been for the school as a whole? I think one of the biggest challenges is the anxiety that emerges due to the lack of certainty about the world we all find

What are some positives, in your opinion, to come out of this situation in regards to schools and e-Learning? Like everyone else right now, I work hard to find silver linings during this difficult time. I’ve no doubt that being forced to rethink how we teach and learn, to utilize new tools, and to work in new ways will make us better educators and students. In another way, sometimes it takes something being taken away for us to recognize just how important it is to us. I’ve had several discussions with students, parents, and colleagues about just how much we all miss something we really take for granted - school. In a deeper way, times of crisis like this provide perspective on what’s important and what’s trivial. Over time, I feel like we tend to move too many things from that latter category into the former one. This difficult time, I believe, has given us the chance to reset that balance.

Top: Kylie Boyer ‘20, Joslyn Boyer ‘19 and Reeghan Boyer ‘22 showed their support for teachers during the Senior Drive-through on Saturday, May 16th - the day before what would have been Graduation Day for seniors; Frank Vosicky ‘14 (with best friend, Sadie) and Nora Sypkens ‘21 show their school spirit on Maroon & Gold Monday in April; Principal Kevin Beirne helped deliver yard signs to cheer up members of the Class of 2020; Abby Petersen ‘20 decorated her vehicle to participate in the Senior Drive-through; On the Cover: Thank you to Megan Crotty Pauley ‘00 for turning the lights on and taking weekly photos of Duffy Memorial in solidarity with Illinois high schools as a sign of support for essential workers and hope for the community during the Covid crisis.

What has been the most difficult obstacle to overcome with all of this? While I think our teachers and students have done a truly remarkable job creating opportunities for continuity of learning from a technical standpoint, I believe the most successful learning experiences are highly relational. When you think of those studentteacher partnerships that were most important to your own growth, I suspect a strong relationship was at the center of them. Distance learning necessarily makes those relationships tougher to foster. Our teachers and students thrive on those daily in-person connections and they’ve been difficult to replicate in a virtual environment.

What has been the response to e-Learning from students and parents? From both formal and informal feedback we’ve received, it’s clear that high school teaching and learning is not intended to be done in an e-Learning environment. Still, it’s also clear from that feedback that our approach during this very difficult situation has been overwhelmingly well received by all stakeholder groups.
