Fall 2018
“It has been a great year for our students and school community with a number of success stories.” - Jim Segredo, President Dear Alumni and Friends, is past summer was extremely active in preparation for the 2018-19 school year. e renovations of the boys and girls locker rooms, as well as the transition of the Duffy Memorial Stadium concession stand into the Vince Gavin Stadium Club, kept us all very busy. Close to $500,000 was invested in improvements and additions to our campus - including equipment for our students. My sincerest appreciation to those who contributed to the locker renovations and to the Gavin family - Vince's wife Eileen, and his children, Mary Eileen '87, Vince '88, John '91 and Paul '96 for their generosity in providing the funds for the construction of the Stadium Club. I invite you to take a look at the results when you are on campus. We are off to a very good start to our 53rd year of Lasallian, Catholic education. Principal Kevin Beirne has done an excellent job in getting the school year started. We look forward to his leadership this year and for years to come. I am very pleased to report that close to 80% of students taking AP Exams scored high enough to receive college credit. irty-three perfect scores of 5 were reported for our students. Every year, these scores exceed state and national averages and our Advanced Placement program is recognized as one of the best in the State of Illinois. Our STEM program has been upgraded with the addition of a Pre-Engineering class and Drone Building to the curriculum. Drone Building became a reality this year through the generosity of the Norton Family - Jim and Mary, Jamie '98, Michael '02 and Colleen '04. Students in Robotics II will be building drones and our new Flight Club (under the direction of our Technology Director, Pete Farina,'87) has been established. Students have been flying the drones over the school campus after school hours and during Friday night football games. We hope to post some of the videos on our web site in the near future. Several new electives courses have been added to the curriculum in eology, Math and Social Studies. And, right before this newsletter went to print, six students and two faculty members were returning from a powerful four day El Otro Lado Immersion program on our border in El Paso, Texas with students and faculty from Cathedral High School. e fall sport season was successful with athletes and teams advancing into the state championship tournaments. Congratulations to Junior Class Moderator, Megan Steiner '10 and student leaders for their outstanding job in organizing our ‘Kick Off Rallies’ before every home football game. Students enjoyed music, games and food and began a new tradition by lining the east drive and cheering as the football team and coaches walk toward Duffy Memorial Stadium. Many thanks to the members of our faculty/staff who have personally donated the food, snacks and entertainment for these rallies. Montini Catholic benefited greatly from the Tax Credit Scholarship program made possible through the "Invest In Kids Act" that was passed by the state legislature in November of 2017. irty-three students received over $430,000 in scholarships through Empower Illinois. ank you to the 15 members who donated close to $110,000 (restricted for our students) and to Empower Illinois for providing an additional $320,000 in aid. Donors to the program receive a 75% tax credit on each dollar donated (eg. a donation of $1000 will generate a $750 Illinois Tax Credit for their 2018 state income tax). ere are still tax credits available for 2018 and I strongly encourage all to participate in the program. ere are currently eleven more qualifying students on the waiting list for a scholarship if more money is donated (and restricted for Montini Catholic students to Empower Illinois). Feel free to call me if you would like to participate and help these students. We need your help to continue to advance the mission of education at Montini Catholic. During the months of November and December we will be promoting our Annual Fund program. I ask that you give it careful consideration and make a gift. No matter the amount, each gift makes a difference and every student benefits. As always. my sincere appreciation for your generosity and support and "May Jesus Live In Your Hearts ...Forever". Sincerely,
Jim Segredo, President

ontini Catholic's Peer Ministry Team's mission is to inspire students to engage in faith-based activities at school and in their communities.
"We want to increase opportunities for students to grow in their faith," explained eology teacher, Ms. Katie Wall. "We think that providing opportunities lead by the students, themselves, will make them more meaningful and desirable."
"Our main goal when forming Peer Ministry was to help guide the faith life of our students here at Montini," said Ms. Wall. "Leaders will participate in our school Masses, speak at our freshman and sophomore retreats and lead small group discussions at these retreats, as well," Ms. Wall and her students have also formed different committees within the ministry (Prayer, Service, and General Ministry) with the goal of introducing additional faith-based opportunities to Montini students. Peer Ministers are required to be responsible leaders each day in their classrooms. "Being selected as a member of this group requires a big commitment," added Ms. Wall. "We are very honored to have these dedicated leaders in our midst!" It is Ms. Wall's goal to have the group's presence and influence grow at the school. "We want membership to become a highly sought after position for our young adults!"

Montini's Peer Ministry Team is made up of seniors who were first required to go through a rigorous application process before being selected for membership. Applicants were interviewed and asked to discuss their qualities and strengths and how they could be used to further the group's mission. "In our interviews, they made sure we understood how big of a commitment this truly is," said member Kiana Calkins.
"As a group, we come up with ideas for the whole school in general, this can include retreats and meetings, or basically any way for us to connect the classes spiritually," said member Lia Szilagyi. "Our ultimate goal is to make Montini the best environment it can possibly be with our faith life, and how we treat each other. It really is a huge responsibility having this type of leadership role, but I am very grateful to be a part of it, especially my senior year."
"e club requires energy, creativeness, positivity, motivation Nicholas Alandy feels like it was his 'calling' to join. He is very enthusiastic and a faith-filled spirit," said Isabella Reilley. "I knew that about the tasks that lie ahead. "It is our first year and I just hope to set a joining would make a great impact on me and I hope I can standard that future teams could look up to." make an impact on others." Fellow leader, Renee Swider LEADING BY EXAMPLE continued on page 13 agrees. "I hope to accomplish a closer community at Montini," she said. "I want to help others grow in their relationship with God while becoming closer to each other." Fall 2018 3

"Pope Paul VI achieved many great things in his lifetime," said Principal Kevin Beirne, addressing the students after the Mass. "He was once a teenager too, struggling with many of the same things you struggle with. He was open to where the Holy Spirit might take him." Beirne challenged students, "You might be called in big ways or small ways. Be open to God's grace. Your legacy may not live on through a school named in your honor, but it will live on in the hearts of those you touch." is year, All Saints Day (November 1) was extra special for the Montini Catholic community, who celebrated the recent canonization of Pope Saint Paul VI (October 14, 2018). Our Lasallian high school is devotedly named for Pope Saint Paul VI, who was elected to the papacy in 1963, during the planning of creation of our school. He was born as Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini in 1897 in the northern Italian province of Brescia, and was elected pope in 1963. He served a 15-year pontificate before his death on August 6, 1978.

who wants to get wet? Homecoming Week, marked the
perfect time for an 'extreme' dose of school spirit when eleven bold faculty members (hesitantly) agreed to sacrifice their dignity (and better judgement) to brave the cold waters of a dunk tank - all in the name of fun. "e dunk tank was actually Principal Beirne's idea," said Megan Steiner ‘10, who organized the dunk tank logistics with her Montini Maniacs club. Megan put the word out to the faculty for 'victims' and was very thankful when teachers volunteered. ey each had their 'mug' shots taken and posters were hung around the school, encouraging all to come out and dunk their favorite teacher. "ey were great sports," said Megan. "e water was freezing - but there was lots of laughter - the students and teachers had a great time!"
POWDERPUFF TRADITION At Powderpuff this year, Montini students elected to get a head start on collecting food and money for their annual Golden Gobbler Food Drive which begins in November. Fans seeking an evening of powder puff entertainment were asked to either pay a ticket fee or donate a canned good. All of the money earned will go toward purchasing turkeys for families in need during the holidays.

Fall 2018
On ursday, All Saints Day - after celebrating Mass - Montini Catholic students who traveled to Jamaica over their summer break stepped up to share their experiences. During their trip, students had the opportunity to tour the Riverton Meadow community which included the Garbage Dump area - a place where most people in that community worked to make a living. e students were exposed to the struggles that many Jamaicans face on a daily basis. ese are the stories they shared: Mia Gramann - e Riverton Meadow community is one of the poorest communities in all of Jamaica. Most families live in shacks made of zinc and have little to no resources or money. We had the opportunity to see the garbage dump, where most people work to make a living. Enya O’Flaherty - We were able to help at the summer school by teaching math, reading and basic grammar skills to kids of all ages. We were amazed by how much each teacher was expected to handle. With
an entire school as big as about one of our art rooms, each child was still incredibly happy and grateful for what they had. We also painted their playground to bring some joy, energy and color into their world.
was made up of one room and one bed. We had the opportunity to personally deliver this money for resources for her and her family. She was beyond grateful, started to cry and couldn’t stop thanking us for our generosity.
“We knew in that moment that what we were doing was right. It was a moment we will never forget.”
Kylie Boyer - After all of us saw this reaction and how it impacted her, we all knew that our contribution was much appreciated and needed. We all felt a sense of purpose and belonging that day, and we knew in that moment that what we were doing was right. It was a moment we will never forget.
Grania O’Flaherty - e children were very excited to see us. We do not think we can put into words how grateful everyone was that we were there. Just by us being there, playing with the kids brought so much joy to the community. We were inspired by the way they could have so much fun with simple things. Our presence there helped Jamaicans know that someone cares about them and were there to help.
Sophie Gallagher - Each of the members who attended the mission trip had a life-changing experience that will last forever. We realized that you never really quite understand the struggles of people until you experience it first hand. Haley May - It was such a great experience to see the way some people live. It was amazing to see how they could be so happy with nothing. is trip made me realize how I should appreciate what I have.

"No one should ever feel like they do not have a place here at Montini," added Lia. "We want to create an environment where everyone can talk to each other without judgment. We want everyone to strive to be accepting, loving, and forgiving." "I hope to help make our school closer and more faith-filled as a whole," added Isabella (Reilley). "I hope that more people will be inspired to get involved, and to make a difference in others’ lives!" Miss Reilley, and all Peer Ministry members are very active in their faith at Montini. "I am inspired to this type of work by my dad’s close friend, who is an evangelist," she said. "He travels all around the world and preaches to millions of people, being an inspiration and helping others find their faith. He is an amazing person who shines God’s light wherever he goes." "My grandmother, Mimi, inspires me to do service in my community," said Renee (Swider). "She is a devout Catholic who volunteers at a thrift store that provides jobs for disabled adults and she is an extraordinary minister at a hospital. She is such a kind, giving, and faithful person and I hope to follow in her footsteps."
Who is International Samaritan?
"My overall experience at Montini has inspired me to be a part of this team," said Olivia Herrmann. "My teachers have encouraged me to take on various leadership roles, which have allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone. is school has become my family, and faith is an aspect just as important. I wholeheartedly believe that we will be able to make a difference in relation to this faith community."

Marissa VanDeVeer - We donated an abundant amount of school supplies, games, toys and other necessities. We also donated a generous amount of money to one single mother with four kids. She and 8 others lived in a house that
“Garbage dump dwellers are some of the poorest people in the world. They barely survive by digging through the city dump for recyclables to sell. We strive to build good communities for people living in and around city garbage dumps. We first start by working with local governments and community nonprofits to try and bring basic infrastructure to the garbage dump communities. After a strong relationship has been established we then start to address the vital needs of each community. This paves the way to begin to build homes, medical facilities, community centers, adult training schools, and fund micro-loan and scholarship programs. We run year-round programs in the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with feasibility studies being conducted in Peru and the Philippines. Service immersions to Guatemala, and Jamaica are also available for volunteers who wish to serve.”
Lia is influenced by witnessing the good works of others. "ere are numerous times where people do things that inspire me to do the same. is can be as simple as someone asking someone else to eat lunch them, or other simple gestures. For me, it is the little things that make me believe that there is always good in the world, even when it may not seem like it - that's why I wanted to be a part of the Peer Ministry Team."

ALUMNI NEWS
NEW TRADITION HONORs
extraordinary BRONCO ALUMNUS is year's honor went to senior Raymond Wojkovich. 'Ray is a 'lunch bucket' type of guy. He is a multiple sport athlete (football and baseball) and is a great competitor," said Head Football Coach Mike Bukovsky ‘84, who, along with Montini's Varsity Football staff, selected him for the honor. "Despite his modest stature, Ray is a physical player who does whatever it takes for the team, and is the kind of guy that won't back down from anybody. He starts at safety, and also excels on special teams." Coach Bukovsky added, "Ray makes the guys around him better, and has tremendous respect for his teammates, coaches, opponents, and the game in general. He is a Bronco through and through!" Raymond was very humbled upon hearing the news of the locker. "I was really honored to be selected for the locker, I really didn’t expect it," he said. "ere are a lot of guys on my team who I think could have also been chosen, but I’m extremely thankful for the nomination. I hope I can be a great advocate for what the locker represents and continue to represent the team and school."
A
lumnus, Brian Forde' 89 had a unique idea to commemorate the memory of his late friend and fellow Bronco teammate, Brad Bumber '89, this past summer.
Montini Catholic Bronco Express
Upon hearing about an opportunity to fund a locker in the Broncos newly renovated locker room, Forde wanted to do something more in remembrance of his beloved teammate. So, he initiated the plan to create 'Bumber's Corner Locker.' Montini student Brad Bumber '89 played linebacker for the Broncos from 1985 to 1989. He passed away on September 26, 2015 due to complications from his long battle with cancer.
16
During and after his time at Montini, Brad Bumber became a living example of the LaSallian traditions both on and off the football field, and how those traditions and values positively influence and shape students during and after high school, throughout their entire life. anks to Forde and his former Bronco teammates from the Class of 1989, each year, a Montini Catholic Bronco varsity football player will receive the honor to use the locker in Brad's honor. "Dedicating a football locker in his memory is the best way our class could think of to honor Brad's memory," said Forde. "e player chosen by his coaches to receive 'Bumber’s Corner Locker' each year should feel extremely honored to be recognized for demonstrating similar attributes and qualities as Brad, and for the privilege to play Bronco Football under the banner of his name and memory." Fall 2018
"Brad Bumber was the definition of a blue-collar player," said Forde, remembering his good friend. "He was never the fastest, strongest, or most naturally talented player on the field. Nobody outworked, out hustled or outperformed him and he never gave anything less than 100% -- in the game, or at practice. " According to Forde, Bumber genuinely loved being on the gridiron, and wanted to make every tackle on every play, but was also the first to congratulate his teammates for making a play. “Brad became our team captain, not only for his performance on the field, but equally because of the positive way he carried himself off the field. rough his daily commitment, work ethic, consistency, and good nature in the locker room, he earned the admiration and respect of his football teammates. He exemplified good sportsmanship, hard work, determination, and the confidence those traits naturally engender. He was a loyal teammate, and a morally grounded friend." Forde also recalled that Brad would go out of his way to take freshmen players under his wing, encouraged them to work hard, and made them feel a part of the football brotherhood. "He wanted every Bronco who wore the jersey to love the game as much as he did, and for his entire team to succeed, together." Teammate Guy DeFeo '89 agrees about Brad's extraordinary demeanor on and off the field. “He was the ultimate
teammate who didn’t need, or want, praise. He made everyone around him better just by his example.” “Brad really took Coach (Chris) Andriano’s speeches, about good sportsmanship, to heart," remembered Brian Forde '89. "We were playing Driscoll, who we hated. I mean hated. After every play he would amble over, smile and offer a hand to help the guy to his feet, the opposing ball carrier—who he just knocked into next week. And he did it again and again, with his huge grin. I’m pretty sure the Driscoll guys all thought he was kind of crazy.“
For all of these reasons, Brad Bumber was admired and respected among his teammates, coaches, and classmates during his time at Montini. Montini Catholic remained so important to him personally, as well. One of Brad's last wishes was to return to Montini to see one last football game and spend time with his old friends and coaches. On Friday, September 18, 2015, that dream was realized. "At the time, he was in the final stage of a long battle with cancer. He had lost almost 90 pounds, and was in excruciating pain," remembers Brian, "In typical Bumber fashion, and against all odds, he showed up!"
