Dear Alumni and Friends, We truly believe that it is the people of Montini Catholic who make our school community a very special place. Over the years Montini Catholic has been blessed to have many dedicated and talented educators elect to make Montini Catholic their home and their career in Catholic education. No one is more talented or more dedicated to Montini Catholic than Maryann O’Neill. is year Maryann has announced she is stepping down as Principal but will remain with the school in a part-time capacity next year and hopefully for several years to come. From the story about Maryann in this edition of Bronco Express, you will read about all the accomplishments and advancements that Montini Catholic achieved under her leadership as principal. Her list of achievements is certainly impressive, but we are very confident that Mr. Kevin Beirne will continue the fine work that Maryann has put in place and we look forward to Mr. Beirne’s leadership and vision for Montini Catholic as he assumes the role of principal for the 2018-19 school year (story on page 5). It is with great sadness that I report to you the passing of Mrs. Nancy Mack, a member of the Montini Catholic staff for 46 years, and Mr. Daryl omas, Montini Catholic’s Head Boys Basketball Coach for the last three years (page 11). Although there is a significant difference in the years they spent in our school community, both individuals made a significant impact and “Touched the Hearts” of many of our students. ey will both be truly missed. We are nearing the end of the 2017-18 school year and once again I am happy to report that we have had a very successful year. As you will read in this issue of Bronco Express our students, clubs and teams have achieved a great success. We are very proud of our students as well as the members of our faculty and staff. In particular we are proud of the 177 seniors that will be graduating on May 20th. Please keep them and all our students in your thoughts and prayers and as always my sincere appreciation for all your support and generosity to our school community. “May Jesus Live In Your Hearts…Forever!” Sincerely,

End of an era. . .

After 32 years of service, Principal Maryann O’Neill announces her retirement

M “

y decision to step down as Principal of Montini was a very difficult one," said Mrs. O'Neill to students and faculty, in February, upon her announcement of her retirement. "For 32 years I have enjoyed waking up and coming to this school. But, I have always been a person that believes that change is good, healthy and productive. Now it is time for that change."

Mrs. O'Neill was hired in 1985 by the late Br. Joseph Boggio, FSC to develop and teach Computer Science and Math at Montini Catholic. "I was hired while one of the school's Brothers was on sabbatical to attain his Masters Degree," said O'Neill. "I committed to stay for two years and have been here ever since!" During her 32 years at Montini Catholic (14 years as principal), O'Neill has taken on several roles. In addition to teaching, she has been a Technology Coordinator, Administrative Assistant to the Principal, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development and Assistant Principal. She also took on many responsibilities regarding extra-curricular activities including being Lasallian Youth Moderator, Retreat Director, Student Activities Moderator and National Honor Society Moderator. She also was a member of the Principal's Advisory Council, the Strategic Planning Committee and Chair of the Academic Advisory Council. In 2011, Mrs. O'Neill was presented with the Bishop Roger L. Kaffer Outstanding Principal Award for personifying the Catholic values and principles of school leadership.

"Maryann's dedication and service to the school is inspiring," said President Jim Segredo. "I am positive that I speak on behalf of the entire school community when I say that Montini Catholic wouldn't be the outstanding school it is today, without her faithfulness and loyalty."

Mrs. O'Neill has witnessed school history with the addition of a Math Wing, a Science Wing, a Campus Ministry Center, a Learning Resource Center, improved and expanded athletic fields including lights at Duffy Memorial Stadium, and a new 3-court Field House.

"It has truly been my honor and privilege to spend each day with the students, faculty and staff of Montini Catholic and to partner with such a supportive parent community," added Maryann. "Montini always will be a very important part of my life. I would like to thank our parents as well as my colleagues for the trust and support they have given me. I also thank the students, past and present, who have shared their stories and taught me so many valuable lessons."

She lives the mission of the school's founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, 'To touch the hearts of students.' "I believe in our founder's charism and his desire that we act as family, as brothers and sisters in Christ," said O'Neill.

Mrs. O'Neill is looking forward to remaining at Montini as a member of the Administrative team and assisting with the transition.

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

Upon her 30th Anniversary at Montini in 2015, Mrs. O'Neill reflected on the observations of how the high school itself has changed over the years. "I have seen Montini grow from electric typewrites to iPads," she smiled. "Our curriculum has grown from one programming class to courses like Web Design, Digital Media and Robotics!" She also informed that "our service ministry program is now going global with teams going to Nicaragua to help homeless families." Under O'Neill's leadership, numerous improvements have been implemented including laptops for all teachers and smart boards, white boards, projectors and software. She oversaw the installation of the first computer lab and created a computer department and curriculum. is was followed by a second lab, the computerization of the library, and internet access for all.

When asked to recall the most rewarding part of her job, O'Neill never fails to say that she relishes the emails, letters, calls and visits from past students who want to tell her about their careers and accomplishments since graduation. She even has a bulletin board in her office which displays many of the messages she receives from past students. "It is heartwarming to hear from our former students," she said. "I am also proud that many of our alums have returned to work here at Montini as well."

KEVIN BEIRNE NAMED AS NEW PRINCIPAL bronco

ROBOTICS TEAM PROGRAMMING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS !

Montini Catholic robotics students brought home the 2nd Place titles at the College of Dupage Engineering Olympics (February 16th) and the Argonne Autonomous Vehicle Competition at the Museum of Science and Industry (April 8th). e College of DuPage Engineering Olympics is an annual design competition inviting high school teams interested in engineering or design type fields to participate in short design competitions. "is year our Broncos competed against 28 other teams," informed Pete Farina, Technology Director at Montini Catholic. "Most of the other schools were much bigger than Montini but our two teams represented us well and we brought home a trophy!" e winning Bronco team was led by senior Ben Gruthoff and included seniors Chris Hejny, Luke Morrill, Teju Kolawole, and Devin Chiaramonti.

Montini's team members at Argonne were (pictured above with Mr. Farina l to r): Alex Walsh, Max Kramer, Ray Zimmerman, Jake Mondschean, Diego Trimarco and Abby Wolf. "Having Mr. Farina's guidance has proved to be incredibly valuable and his experience has gotten us over a number of hurdles along the way,” said Jake Mondschean. “e results of this competition are sure to give the program credit for the incredible skills that it teaches to all Montini robotics students!"

Kevin Beirne joined the Montini Catholic family in 2008 as an English instructor. From there he was promoted to the Director of Digital Learning Initiative and was instrumental in rolling out the school's 1-to-1 iPad program in 2014. In 2015, he became Assistant Principal for Student Services, taking over the role vacated by Kathy Filipiak. He currently works side by side with Montini's Guidance Department and Deans Office to ensure that the academic and behavioral needs of all students are met. "From the moment I walked through the doors of Montini, it was clear to me that I would be a part of this community for a long time," said Beirne, who is a graduate of e Catholic University of America where he earned a BA in Communication and Studies and an MA in School Administration, Foundations and Curriculum. (He is currently working on his doctorate (EdD) at

Lewis University.) "After 3 years of working closely with our creative, diligent, and spirited students, I was presented with the challenge of leading our budding digital learning initiative," said Beirne. "at position provided me the opportunity to work closely with the faculty, and I quickly recognized them to be incredibly talented, reflective, professional and Lasallian." "As Assistant Principal, I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to work alongside Mrs. O’Neill. While assuming the role of principal is both exhilarating and overwhelming, I’m heartened knowing that I have been under the tutelage of the very best. By witnessing firsthand Mrs. O’Neill’s expertise, knowledge, insight, creativity, passion, and leadership, I am undoubtedly a much better educator." “Kevin has big shoes to fill as he joins the leadership team in the role of Principal," said President Jim Segredo. "But, I know he has the ability, drive and credentials to build on all that Mrs. O'Neill has accomplished. He will bring a new energy and fresh ideas to this role."

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

e Argonne Autonomous Vehicle Competition is structured and modeled after the engineering design cycle that Argonne engineers and scientists practice - from submitting a project proposal to documenting progress to presenting final product. Teams were judged on their engineering design process, vehicle design and performance. Only 15 high schools received the opportunity to compete in the competition - Montini was one of them! "is year there were two different categories, a Design Category and a Performance Category," explained Farina. " We won the second place trophy in each one!"

Kevin Beirne will become Montini’s 9th Principal.

Math students celebrated the school's 25th annual Pi Day on March 14. Math Department Chair, Christine McManus helped plan many activities to commemorate the day. Pi Day, founded by Physicist Larry Shaw in 1988, is a day to celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π). "Our freshmen completed a webquest about all things related to Pi," informed McManus. "And our sophomores constructed Archimedean solids. Our juniors built and tested bridges made from straws and poster board, and seniors presented challenging logic puzzles to their peers." Additionally, students were invited to compete in a pi recitation contest (to see how many numbers of pi they could remember). COVER STORY

We are

empowerED Montini Catholic Bronco Express

On January 17th, a group of very passionate Montini Catholic students began their annual pilgrimage to Washington D.C. to take part in the world's largest pro-life event, the March for Life.

8

e group of young activists joined hundreds of thousands as they remembered the more than 55 million Americans who have been lost to abortion. e March was held on January 19, 2018 with this year’s theme being 'Love Saves Lives.' e historic march, in its 45th year, is held every January at our nation's capitol. January 22nd marks the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision making abortion on demand available throughout the United States. Each year the Montini attendees boldly support the March for Life Education and Defense Fund with their goal of overturning Roe v. Wade. Spring 2018

Twenty-six Montini students, accompanied by teachers, Mr. Denis Block and Ms. Katie Wall, braved the cold when they left for our nation's capital on the evening of the 17th and traveled through the night to arrive at their destination. e 15-hour journey was made with hundreds of fellow students from the Diocese of Joliet and included a Mass for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception upon their arrival. eology teacher and Montini's Pro-Life Club advisor, Katie Wall, who coordinated this year's pilgrimage, has currently attended four Marches for Life. (ree with Montini students, and one as a high school student at Rosary High School, in Aurora.). "I was the Vice President of my Pro-Life Club at Rosary and have been active in the pro-life movement ever since,” she said. Ms. Wall finds it rewarding to volunteer at pregnancy crisis centers and encouraged her students to participate in Cupcakes for Life/National Pro-Life Cupcake Day earlier in the school year to benefit Waterleaf Women's Center in Aurora. "What struck me so much this year at the March was the immense amount of peace, love, and respect that was at the center of this movement. From this year's motto of 'love saves lives' to the comments of every speaker, love and acceptance were at the heart of everything. e pro-life movement and the March for Life are strong and full of passion, but also filled with compassion and love." It is because of these aspects that Wall holds firm on supporting the cause and sees it as a positive experience for her students. e group rose at the crack of dawn on Friday in order to participate in the day's events which began with a Youth Rally. Wall admits that there can be hectic elements of taking a group of almost 30 high school students over 700 miles, on a bus in the dead of winter, but is quick to add that it is one of her favorite things she is involved in as a teacher at Montini. "I have the privilege of seeing our students grow in their conviction for the pro-life movement," she says. "I see them grow in understanding of its importance, and I see them form a community amongst themselves of strong student leaders." She believes it is very important for students to learn to define their beliefs and then learn how to peacefully and respectfully stand up for those beliefs. "is trip is a perfect way for them to do that. and each student is so inspiring to me. I consider myself blessed to know them and learn from them."

Many student activists from Montini have taken their passion for life beyond the doors of Montini and out into the real world. We caught up with one, Cameron Casey ‘15, who is currently the President of Students for Life at Loyola University in Chicago. The group is aided by a statewide organization, Students for Life of Illinois (just recently renamed We Dignify). What motivated you to get involved in the Pro-Life movement? I have always been prolife in my beliefs, but I had never really acted upon them before. A lot of different things got me involved, my friends were a big influence as most of them are involved in the movement. Going on the march and seeing the passion and love and friendliness of everyone coming from all different backgrounds and beliefs - championing the same cause - really made an impact on me. Between this and becoming more active with the club going to meetings and doing photography for their speakers, I was learning more about the tragedy that has killed millions since its legal institution in 1973. I was offered a position as the Activism Chairman last summer, talking to people on campus about the issue, and my involvement grew from there.

Any other Montini kids members of We Dignify with you? Carina Greico (former President), Eddie Laviste (current Vice President), and Bobby Powers are all involved. We all traveled to the March for Life this year together. What do you and other We Dignify members do? We are very actively involved with our campus and the community. There are many misconceptions about the pro-life movement. We are not going out demanding abortion be made illegal because that is not a viable solution. We are involved with education and activism, meaning that we educate others on their options. Most women feel they need an abortion because they have no other support. This is something we strive to change. Every fall we have a Pregnancy Resource Fair and every Friday we volunteer at a womens’ crisis home, The Well of Mercy. Women can stay there when they are financially unstable and we babysit the kids so the mothers can work, go to school or just simply have a night off. The work we do there is very important, as we are working directly with the community that we are advocating for. It is a very humbling experience, and these sorts of places are ones that should be more widely known.

"Also, President Trump and Vice President Pence spoke from the Rose Garden at the White House," added Marissa. "is was

"Going on this trip for the second year in a row was truly a blessing," said junior Marissa VanDeVeer. "Everything about it was amazing. All of the speakers at the rally had stories that made my belief even stronger." Marissa was particularly inspired by speaker, Pam Tebow, mother of NFL player, Tim Tebow. "She was told that her baby would have many physical defects, and that she would die during pregnancy unless she aborted him," she said. "But, she prayed to God and asked for his guidance. She had a successful and healthy pregnancy. She also pointed out that he obviously doesn’t have any physical defects, since he is a very large NFL football player. is really inspired me. Even though abortion was recommended, she stuck with her faith."

cool to see because Trump is the first president to address the March for Life, and he has a very positive outlook on the future." (Coincidentally, President Trump is the 45th President addressing the 45th March for Life.) Marissa plans to attend next year's rally as a Montini senior, but prays that someday the march will be unnecessary. "Hopefully abortion will soon be illegal and we won't have the need to march." Sophomore, Angelina Greico, is also no stranger to standing up for her Catholic beliefs. is March marked her fifth! "I’ve gone to three in Chicago and this was my second one in Washington, D.C.," she informed. "I found this trip as a learning opportunity to understand more about my pro-life beliefs. After hearing all the great speakers and their stories, I was definitely inspired to pass on the message." Angelina added, "It was amazing to see how many people were present this year. It seems like the crowd gets bigger and bigger each year, especially

with the younger generation, with so many kids around my age. is year, it took so much time to move just a few steps, which is crazy! e best part is that we’re surrounded by a loving, welcoming, and open community that is passionate about their beliefs." Angelina's older sister, Montini alumna, Carina '15, was also attending the rally with Loyola Students for Life. Because of the heavy crowds, however, the sisters were only able to meet up for a few quick minutes after the march. "I am so glad that I was able to take part in such an amazing and inspiring opportunity. I hope the crowd will be even bigger next year!"

Life and witnessing a debate between Loyola Students for Life and a pro-choice group on campus. On-campus discussions of the issue with random people is something that can be very tough, however I have found it to be very rewarding in that I have gotten something out of every conversation. Whether it has ended in agreement, a simple appreciation of our work with crisis shelters, or with yelling in my face, I have learned a lot of valuable lessons. One is to respect and love everyone - regardless of their beliefs.

e rewarding weekend ended with a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral and a second long bus ride home. e March for Life began as a small demonstration in 1973 and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world. Students and teachers at Montini Catholic have been participating in this somber event for over 18 years.

Photo taken by Cameron at the 2018 March for Life in D.C.

What do you hope to take away from all of this? I will always be involved in the pro-life movement. The effects this tragedy has had on the lives of many, including women and their partners, is truly astounding, once you begin to look at the facts. Seeing these things and having met those who had suffered from this tragedy in some fashion has only made me more passionate in my beliefs. I hope to continue supporting the movement in any way I can. What that will look like? I can’t say now, but I am excited to see what the future holds.

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

Do your parents support you? My parents (David ‘79 and Gail Casey) are very supportive of me. Recently, they attended the Chicago March with me. It was their first pro-Life event. I think it helped them to understand my role in the movement better, why I enjoy it so much, and how important it really is.

10

What advice would you give to young students/adults thinking about getting involved in this movement? Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. I know that being vocal about your beliefs can be extremely difficult for some people, and was for me at first. Discussing this controversial issue and finding ways to help those afflicted by it is easier than you’d think once you start. I encourage every student to check out the Pro-Life Club at Montini and to attend the march. I know that Dr. Mordente is very passionate about the cause. Students with questions should talk to him!bo

Spring 2018

What is it like to March in Washington? It really is surreal there’s not really a way I can describe it. If I had to choose one word it would have to be ‘awesome’, as that is the only thing I feel while I am there. It is spectacular seeing the love and respect for life coming from the crowd. I encourage everyone to attend the March at least once in their lifetime.

SCHOOL NEWS

This year we said goodbye to two special members of our Montini Catholic family. Coach Thomas and Nancy Mack and their families remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Coach Daryl Thomas May 25, 1965 - March 28, 2017

It was the spring of 2015 when Daryl omas joined our Montini Catholic family as head coach of the boys varsity basketball team. During his three short years as a Bronco he made a huge, positive impact on our school. Immediately he not only became a great role model to our athletes, but to everyone who crossed his path. Before coming to Montini, Daryl became a household name while playing basketball at St. Joseph High School in Westchester. He went on to play basketball at Indiana University under the guidance of Hall of Fame Coach, Bobby Knight. Afterwards he played 13 years of professional basketball in Europe and South America. is past December, Daryl visited with Montini’s eology students to share his life story. e quote he left the students with - “Always treat people ‘better’ than they treat you. You will never fail in doing that.”

Members of Montini’s basketball team, Scott West, Matthew Morrissey and Garrick Nielsen, Jr. at Montini’s Memorial Mass for Coach Thomas.

December 16, 1936 - January 3, 2018 For 45 years Nancy Mack was the "welcoming face and voice" of Montini. She began her legacy in 1971 and served as the school's bookkeeper, business manager, main office manager and receptionist. She retired from Montini in 2016, and received a standing ovation from Montini students when she accepted the Lasallian Educator’s award during Founder’s Day that same year. On her 81st birthday this past December, members of Montini’s Lasallian Youth Club gathered in Nancy’s decorated yard to sing Christmas carols and to wish her a Blessed and Merry Christmas. Nancy was overcome with joy. We miss Nancy, but she will forever remain in our hearts.

Nancy Mack

“His infectious laugh, his positive and caring attitude and his dedication and hard work will continue to live on and be remembered at Montini Catholic,” said President Jim Segredo at his Memorial Mass on April 6th. Let us remember all the fond memories that Coach Daryl provided us over the years and know that he is with God watching over us.”

4 Alumni and friends were invited to a special afternoon celebrating all things "Frozen" on Sunday, January 28th. e school's first ever Winter Family Fest event welcomed kids of all ages to ‘let it go’" and warm up with hot chocolate, cupcakes and activities - with the highlight of the day - a special visit by the characters of the Disney classic, Frozen. Delighted, young (and older) fans lined up for their opportunity to say hello to their favorite characters, Anna, Elsa and Kristoff. Afterwards, it was off to the auditorium for a sing-a-long with the trio, before a showing of the movie.
