@MontiniCatholic. #WeAreMontini
- Jim Segredo
Dear Alumni and Friends, The 56th school year for Montini Catholic came to a close on May 26th and once again I am happy to report that this past school year was filled with a great deal of success and excitement. On May 22nd, 120 graduating seniors were added to our Alumni Association. This class earned close to $16 million dollars in academic scholarships - well over $20 million with athletic scholarships included. There was a great spirit of togetherness with this class and it was apparent throughout the school year. I am especially proud of how our students welcomed their transfer classmates from St. Joseph High School. We had much to celebrate this year at Founder’s Day. We are quite proud to have awarded the very first John L. Duffy Memorial Scholarship. We were honored to have Stephen McPartlan, step-brother of John along with Jim Ronan ‘70 and Mike Manna ‘70 with us to present this very special award. Read more about John L. Duffy and his impact on Montini Catholic on page 12. We were truly honored to host the first 50th Anniversary Class Reunion with members of our Class of 1971 (one year delayed due to Covid -19), on June 12th. For many it was their first time back on campus and everyone had a very enjoyable time. Congratulations to Maureen (Scola) deWaard, Roberta (Brink) Novak, Pam (Konopacz) Baldwin, Lorraine Pintozzi, Joan (Hurley) Wagner, Jan (Hayes) Powell and Michael Tellone for organizing a great reunion. We are looking forward to welcoming our Class of 1970 for their 50th Anniversary Reunion (actually their 52nd reunion) titled the ‘Class of 1970 turns 70’ on October 8th. Our Class of 1972 will be holding their 50th Anniversary on October 22nd. On October 7th we are honored to be inducting seven graduates who have achieved excellence in their careers, athletic participation and support to Montini Catholic into our Hall of Fame. Two faculty members who have played key roles in our success will also be inducted with lifetime achievement awards. We hope you will consider joining us in honoring these outstanding Broncos. Our Broncos enjoyed an outstanding spring sports season (pp. 10-12), highlighted by our Girls Soccer Team making history by finishing 3rd in the state. Our Robotics Team finished 12th in the VEX Robotics State Championship and was the highest placing private school in the state competition. Our Math Team placed 6th in the ICTM State Math Championship making this the 21st straight year that the team has placed in the top 11 in state. Go Broncos! The success we enjoy each year is due to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and students - in addition to the support and generosity that we receive from our extended family. Because of you we are able to provide our students with an outstanding faculty, numerous academic and extracurricular programs and excellent educational facilities. We are currentlty preparing for an exciting 22-23 school year and can’t wait to welcome over 150 freshmen to our Class of 2026. We pray for the return of a normal school year and we look forward to celebrating even more Bronco success stories! Thank you for all your support. I hope to see many of you at the Bronco Classic Golf Outing on Friday, August 12th and throughout the school year at alumni and school events. As always, "May Jesus Live In Our Hearts ... Forever."

survived&thrived Montini Catholic's Class of 2022 celebrated four years of hard work, discipline and achievement on May 22nd at our 53rd Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremony. One-hundred and twenty graduates received their diplomas. The Mass was celebrated by Most Reverend Ronald A. Hicks, Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet. "You’re passing from one world to another. One is marked by having others, primarily your families, taking care of you. The other is marked by you beginning to take of yourself," said Principal Kevin Beirne. "One is marked by others ready to pick you up when you fall while the other is marked by you pushing yourself up and brushing yourself off. One is marked by adults telling you what to do and when to do it, while the other is marked by you setting your own priorities, schedules, and agendas."
"We persevered in the face of whatever the world hurled in our direction," said valedictorian Audrey Kekstadt. "We attended classes online and in person and did our work as if nothing had happened. As we enter the reality of adulthood, we must constantly enlighten
Audrey concluded with words of encouragement and inspiration. "Remember this: Curiosity, passion, perseverance are what ultimately drive excellence—not intelligence alone. God created us to glorify

"As you set forth after this milestone and rite of passage, please listen to that inner voice inside you, that one that has enabled you to thrive,” concluded Principal Beirne. “Allow it to carry you forward and over any challenge you’ll encounter. You’re ready not only to survive what lies ahead, but to truly thrive as you pave the way for others to follow. Your teachers and I know you’re ready to transform the world around you! Congratulations Class of 2022 - we will miss you!"

Mr. Beirne reflected on the disruption of 'normalcy' caused by the pandemic which affected the Class of 2022 for the majority of their high school experience. "Your sense of community didn’t just survive, it thrived. The disruption caused by the pandemic was more prolonged for your class than any other. Overcoming this unique challenge was not easy. As students, you could have just survived academically, getting through these four years. You decided to thrive instead. Keep that in mind as you face new challenges moving forward."

Due to his guidance and leadership, the Montini Catholic Technology program has developed into one of Illinois’ top high school instructional technology programs - public or private.

From the introduction of the 1-to-1 iPad Program, the revamping of Montini's technology infrastructure, the development of the pre-engineering curriculum and Robotics and Drone programs, Pete Farina has played a significant role in planning and implementing many vital projects. Pete, with the help of programming instructor Barry Briggs, has evolved Montini’s technology courses from basic computer skills to higher level STEM-based courses in computer Summer 2022
Over the years, Pete has guided Montini through several technologyrelated changes. The biggest and most wide-ranging was the move in 2014 to a 1:1 learning environment with iPads. This learning environment continues to evolve and change as Montini works to meet the needs of modern day students. He has found involvement at Montini outside the classroom to be just as rewarding. He started a Computer Club in 2000 which continues to this day and he ran a Film Club and the Rock of Ages shows for several years. In 2013, he started a competitive

PARTNER AWARD
EDUCATORS AWARD
Accounting/ Human Resources/Tuition Manager, Barb Pauley, received Montini Catholic’s Lasallian Partner Award, presented each year to a staff member who truly represents and practices the Lasallian Spirit of education within the Bronco community. The award was announced on Founder's Day.
Also on Founder’s Day, Don Krystof received the prestigious Lasallian Educators Award for 2022. "Don truly represents and practices the Lasallian Spirit of education within the Montini family," said President Jim Segredo. "He is an outstanding Math teacher who continuously strives for excellence." In addition to teaching, Don, who began his Montini career in 2015, also coaches the Lady Bronco Tennis Team and has coached the Boys Tennis Team in previous years. He is a vital coach of Montini's State ranked Math Team - assisting Bronco Mathletes to a 6th in State finish this year. "Don is always willing to lend a hand. He regularly volunteers his time to chaperone dances and many other student activities and events throughout the year," added President Segredo. "He greatly assisted our Campus Ministry program as a Faculty Kairos Retreat Leader and is our Junior Class Moderator. It's easy to see why we are so proud to present Don with this award!"
Barb joined our Bronco family in 2004 and is a key member of our Business Office, managing tuition accounts and assisting with Montini’s financial aid and scholarship process each year. She also provides budgeting assistance to Business Manager, Jim Nelson and volunteers her time to assist our Development Office with numerous development and fundraising activities. Barb just celebrated the graduation of grand-daughter, Isabelle Juda ‘22 and will be welcoming grandson, Chris ‘26, to Montini this fall as a freshman! We are so happy to have Barb Pauley as a member of our Bronco family!
Pete’s STEM outreach programs for middle school students have included STEM presentations at grade schools as well as hosting STEM Days at Montini. He has enjoyed being a part of several Kairos retreats and chaperoning on three Montini trips to Europe. Pete also completed the Lasallian Leadership Institute, a three year program, and is a member of Montini’s Lasallian Educators Group. “While most of my work revolves around technology, it’s the students and my colleagues who really sustain me and make me look forward to each new project," says Pete. "Helping students and colleagues solve challenging problems and reach their goals is what keeps me motivated year after year.”

ALUMNI NEWS Every year the nostalgia of the past & the reality of the present collide for legacy parents celebrating the graduation of their son or daughter - while reflecting on their own Bronco memories.
common bonds
“
Amy caveny ‘94 The graduation of my daughter, Megan ‘20, is very nostalgic and extremely special. Montini is a unique place that brings families and students together. A very warm and caring environment in which I am so proud and grateful my children get to experience. My life long best friends came from Montini. Those friends I now call my family. That’s rare. And, a true blessing.
James ‘96 & Katie Doll HUBENY ‘96 Montini’s Class of 2022 have persevered through unprecedented times and it was an honor to watch Ryan '22 and his classmates don their maroon and white graduation gowns. Ryan is the 13th member of the combined Doll and Hubeny families to graduate from Montini. We are so pleased with how Montini has grown since our years as students and continues to successfully prepare its students for life after Montini Catholic. Our older son, Jimmy '21, continually uses the skills and lessons he learned at Montini to move forward in his life and career. Montini is the total package ... a close knit, family-oriented community with strong academics, athletics and spiritual guidance. We look forward to the graduations of our 2 younger children, Sean '25 and Mary Grace '28 and making more Bronco memories.
kimberly kellogg kasallis ‘85
BRYAN MCNAMARA ‘86 Bridget and I attended Montini Catholic and were lucky enough to be a part of the great class of 1986. We ran in different circles, we participated in different activities, and we both found friendships that will last a lifetime. We moved to Naperville 22 years ago because of the schools. When our oldest (Kelly ’15) got close to high school age, she wanted to do a “Shadow Day” at Montini. From the moment she walked in the building until the time she left, she said “it felt like family.” We knew that in order to make this happen, many sacrifices would have to be made, especially since she has a younger sister (Katie ‘17) and brother (John ’22). After much discussion, she became a Bronco in 2011. Of course, the rest is history, sister and brother decided they wanted to be Broncos too! They each participated in different activities, they each ran in different circles and they each found friendships that will last a lifetime. Seeing John graduate marked the end of an era for us - but all 5 of us will always be Broncos. We will continue to go to football games, softball games and theater events. Montini will always hold a place in our hearts because it helped us become the people that we are. Montini gave our children a chance to participate and to excel. They were always a name and not just a number. Montini is a family. A big thank you goes out to all the teachers and staff. You all helped us raise 3 great kids!
William Moran ‘82 Julia Lucille Moran ‘22 graduated from Montini Catholic High School on May 22,
2022 - forty years (Yikes!) after I did. She is my third and final child to graduate from Montini. This is not the first time that I’ve been able to think about what it means to be an alumnus as well as a parent of alumni. This time, though, there’s a sense of finality as she is the last one in her generation in our family. None of my teachers had the opportunity to teach her. I’ve been happy that some fellow 80s Montini graduates are currently on staff. They have been able to get to know her and guide her through her journey at Montini. That connection across generations and families is what makes Montini special. I’m very glad that she got to experience it. I pray that she’ll build a life on a faith-filled foundation and always pursue truth. Remember to keep moving forward. Check the rear-view mirror once in a while. Sometimes that’s when you can see things more clearly.
Melinda Bayro Nowak ‘89 Being a grateful, alumni of Montini and now getting the pleasure to witness my son graduate from Montini is beyond words. Recalling as Nate ‘22 perservered through the remote learning, it has been emotional for me. I took in all the last events. Graduation from high school is an extremely powerful experience - children prepare for 4 years, but the end truly sneaks up on you. My advice and reflection to my son is Montini will forever serve you. I have never not felt welcomed when returning to campus way after graduation day. It is with honor and a blessing to watch you graduate from Montini. You will always have Montini’s teachings inside you. They have touched your heart, as they touched mine back in 1989 and your sisters in 2017. Your father and I are very proud of you, Nathaniel Nowak, and love you very, very much. God Bless Montini Catholic High School’s Class of 2022! COMMON BONDS - continued on page 15

In May of 1985, I graduated from Montini Catholic. Thirty-seven years later, I had the privilege of watching my daughter graduate from Montini Catholic. The older I get, the more I realize the positive impact a Catholic education has had on me. I am certain the same values are being instilled in my children, now both graduates of Montini. Madalyn ‘22 had many choices for high school, looked into all of them and, ultimately, the decision to attend Montini was all hers. Her high school years were met with many obstacles, a complete shutdown
mid sophomore year, hybrid remote classroom with a shortened sports season junior year, but was rewarded senior year with a state championship for volleyball and memorable Montini events for her final year! As I have, Madalyn has made lifelong friends and will have fond memories of Montini.

Regional Champions
The Montini Catholic baseball program completed another strong spring season, finishing the spring 23-12 and winning their eighth consecutive IHSA Regional Championship. The Broncos were also Chicago Catholic League (White Division) Champions, sweeping St. Ignatius and DePaul Prep in conference play and defeating Fenwick in a pivotal home game. Following a two year hiatus, the Broncos returned to Orlando, Florida for their annual spring trip, where they played and trained at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, former Spring Training home of the Atlanta Braves. Other highlights of the spring season included a 10-0 shutout of St. Rita in 5 innings, and a road win against Providence Catholic in CCL play. Team captains were Estevan Moreno, Vince McDowell, Michael Wind, and Cash Campbell. Chicago Catholic League All-Conference selections were Quinn Boyer '24, Cash Campbell '24, Dominic Catalano '24 and Estevan Moreno '22. Moreno will play baseball at the University of Notre Dame next season, and is also a probable MLB draft pick. The Frosh/Soph Broncos advanced to the Final Four of the CCL Conference Tournament, and with a lot of young talent in the program, the future is bright!
LACROSSE The Lady Bronco Lacrosse Team had an exciting year coming off of 2021 without a season (due to Covid). As a novice team, with a mix of some returners and many new faces, it was exciting to see the growth amongst our squad throughout the season. In 18 games, our Broncos got a ton of game experience that set them up for even more success in the future. The team showed fight throughout the season, capturing strong conference wins against Fenwick, Mother McAuley and Trinity and ultimately was seeded 6th out of 10 teams in our sectional. With a smaller roster, every game was a total team effort, from our experienced players to our new faces. Seeing the team come together, support one another and watch different players step up each game was rewarding. Three freshman garnered awards in the post season rounding out our successful year- Ava Sebben*, Maddie Trapp and Annika Bartell were named to the All-sectional team and received all conference honors as well!

The 2022 Varsity Boys Team had quite the ride! Jumping to varsity play from a successful JV season last year, we stumbled early as we adjusted to the new level of competition starting our season 2-5. The second half of our season was marked by a determination to end on a positive note and we did just that - winning 5 of our last 7 games and winning our first playoff game since the IHSA began sponsorship over the sport, a thrilling 10-9 win over higher seed Marmion Academy. The turnaround could largely be attributed to the selfless efforts of our allconference performers Brady Raczkowski ‘22, Seth Jara ‘22, Santino Florio ‘25, Ryan Andres ‘25 and CCL White Player of the Year Mario Florio ‘22. “In nearly 20 years of coaching high school lacrosse, I've never had to account for the chemistry of a team comprised of almost entirely seniors and freshmen,” said Coach Sanford. “Given the significant age gap, I am most appreciative of the sensible leadership of our seniors and the way our younger players decided to adapt quickly and mature. Bronco lacrosse will be better for it in the years to come!”
SPRING SPORTS STANDOUTS Spring 2022 was their time in to shine - these Broncos didn’t disappoint! We’re so proud of our athletes earning CCL ‘Player of the Year” and our coaches earning Coach of the Year status. Way to go, Broncos! Third in State!
Our girls soccer program wrapped up a successful 2022 history-making season with a 14-5-1 record, while claiming a Regional Championship, Sectional Championship, Super-Sectional Championship and a Third Place State Trophy. This was the first time in program history that we made it past sectionals. To end the year third in the state was surreal but also motivation for setting the new standard of Montini Girls Soccer! We started off the season a little slow, still getting used to playing together and getting experience as a group. We started six freshman for the majority of the season. Once we got going, we knew this team was special. After starting the regular season 1-3, we turned a corner to finish out the regular season 8-1-1, and program changing wins over Wheaton Academy and Nazareth Academy. We ended the season second in the GCAC and had five players named to the All-Conference team; Sawyer White ‘22, Anna Carrigan ‘22, Maren Hoovel ‘23, Riley White ‘24 and Lily Cruz ‘25. In addition, we were well represented in our sectional, as Sawyer White and Maren Hoovel were named All-Sectional and Riley White was named All-Sectional Honorable Mention. It was an exciting and historic year with contributions from everyone in the program!

Sectional Champions The Lady Broncos finished the year with a 19-10 record and won both the Lisle Regional and the Montini Sectional before falling in the Supersectional. Kora Navarro '22, Ava Franklin '22, Taylor Utrata '23, and Brooke Kuczynski '24 were all named to the GCAC All-Conference team. Both Kora and Ava will continue their softball careers in college Kora at the University of Findlay in Ohio and Ava at Loras College in Iowa. Boys Track & Field qualified for state in 7 events. All Conference junior Luke Hemmersmeier was the first to qualify in Long Jump. He currently has the 8th best distance in Montini History! Jack McWhinney ‘22 qualified in both the Discus throw and the Shot Put and ended the season with an All Conference title once again. Jack is the current Montini Record holder in Discus. The 4x100m Relay consisting of Jonathan Goff ‘23, Josh Ugorji ‘23, George Asay ‘24 and Luke Hemmersmeier ran a season best time to qualify for State, edging out Fenwick by less than 1/1000 of a second. Jonathan Goff ran the 10th fastest time in Montini history in the 100m Dash qualifying for State. Tommy May was the Sectional Champion in the 400m Dash. Tommy’s time is 4th best in Montini History. The 4x400m Relay of Josh Ugorji, Gabe Bianco’24, Deion Manley ‘22 and Tommy May ‘22 “shocked the world” when they won the sectional - running the 4th fastest in Bronco History." Our Lady Broncos capped off their successful season by sending athletes to State in 2 relays and 3 individual events. The 4x100 meter relay of Takeisha Berry ‘24, Camryn Amouzou ‘25, Ava Kehoskie ‘23, and Sofia Fisher ‘24 were 18th in state, and the 4x200 meter relay of Takeisha, Camryn, Julia Gergen ‘25, and Sofia were 19th in state. Ja’Niyah Hall ‘24 was the alternate for both relays. Takeisha was sectional 4x400m Sectional Championship Relay Team l to r: Tommy May, Gabe Bianco, Deion Manley and Josh Ugorji champion in the 200m and placed 23rd in State. Lily Townsend ‘23* was sectional champion in both the Shot Put and Discus, placing 17th in both events at State. All 7 state qualifiers are returners for next year. Earlier at the GCAC conference championships, Lily and Takeisha earned All Conference honors, Lily by placing second in Shot Put and Discus, and Takeisha by placing second in the 100m dash. Despite facing some of the state’s most elite teams, the Broncos finished at 12-17, with a 5-1 record in the Chicago Catholic League and its Red Division championship - their 4th conference title in 5 seasons. The successes celebrated would not have been possible without the efforts of the senior leadership. Compiled of Alex Alonzo, Andrew Briones, Joseph Calabrese, Ryan Hubeny*, Miguel Jaojoco, Chase Lichter, Cillian O’Flaherty*, Quincy Oyekanmi and James Stiso, the group was a mix of returning players, as well as transfer students from St. Joseph. The season has resulted in some well-decorated players, including Miguel Jaojoco, who was named the CCL Red Lawless Award winner for the best player in the division. Additionally, Jaojoco, Marian University-commit Andrew Briones, and Cillian O’Flaherty* were named as All-Conference selections. (All-State and All-Area players have yet to be named.). A new challenge will certainly present itself next spring, as the Broncos graduated nine players, including six starters and will have to find new talent at the junior-varsity level. Still, with three rising seniors (Thomas Cyze, Joseph Fandohan, and Will Zouras) who all started at the varsity middle-hitter position, a rising senior setter in Adam Garza who stepped in throughout the 2022 campaign, and two rising juniors who became multi-tool players in Anjay Dhir and Hunter Ross, there is a lot of room for optimism in the up-and-coming program. Coach Brian Opoka moved to 72-60 overall in his career as a volleyball coach and was named CCL Red Division Coach of the Year. Summer 2022
The History of Montini’s first Athletic Manager Every school year student and alumni fans pack the stadium to root for their favorite Bronco team. Some may have never noticed the stone memorial near the flagpole or know the story of how John L. Duffy Memorial Stadium came to be. John L. Duffy made Bronco history at a young age - becoming our first athletic manager. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts. In 2023, a book, written by John’s classmate/teammate, Jim Ronan ‘70, about John and his inspiring journey will be available in our library. Below is an exerpt: John was present when the Bronco Football program first kicked off on August 24, 1966. He was one of the smallest players present. He was not muscular. He was not fast. He was not an aggressive person, but as John began his Montini career, he had a deep desire to belong and contribute. The Football team was where he chose to “take root and grow wings.” Unbeknownst to the coaches, players and even John himself, white blood cells affected with disease were flowing throughout his body. (He had been diagnosed with leukemia midway through eighth grade.) John L. did suit up and was living out his dream. His physical limitations, however, put him at risk. A few weeks into the season, Coach Jim Kavanuagh made the decision to appoint John as “Montini’s first ever athletic manager.” John accepted his role and served in that capacity during the first two football seasons in Montini history. He worked hard at his responsibilities; was always an encouragement to his teammates; and was respected by all his fellow peers. John grew in his heartfelt appreciation for the people that made this school what it was and still is: supportive classmates, outstanding teachers, committed coaches and a student focused administration. “Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones had a popular song in the 1960’s titled, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. John would understand the meaning behind those words, because more than anything, John wanted to play football at Montini. His final career football statistics read: 0 tackles; 0 interceptions; 0 fumbles recovered; 0 carries; 0 receptions; 0 completions; 0 yards gained; 0 plays from scrimmage; 2 years as football athletic manager; and finally, 1 stadium named in his honor. The song ends with the lyrics: “But if you try sometime, you just might find, you (people) get what you need...” I truly believe John L. would have chosen a long, healthy, productive life over having his name placed above the entryway of Montini’s stadium. He didn’t want to die, nor was he searching for or in need of recognition. After his passing however, his coaches, teammates, and classmates, along with Montini’s faculty and parents, did want, and maybe needed, his name, along with his character, to be long remembered.

CATHERINE MURPHY PESKA ‘86 1986 - graduated! I’m a Montini alum. I was happy. I was proud. But I can honestly say that my love for Montini truly came to the surface when my second, and then my third child, chose Montini as home for their four years of high school. First, was my son Ethan ’20. He fully embraced the academics and the football tradition that is Montini! He was lucky enough to be playing freshman year while Coach A was still coaching - full circle moment for me! I have to say I fell in love with Montini all over again! Then my son Evan ‘22, chose Montini as well. Montini turned out to be great fit for him academically. He found his niche at Duffy Memorial Stadium playing soccer. I was proud to cheer him on when his team won Regionals in 2019 and as team captain his senior year. Both of my boys are in college as student athletes, and I’m grateful for the college preparation that Montini provided. I’ve spoken of our Montini pride many times - how we bleed Maroon and Gold. I’m thankful that my boys share in the Montini tradition and are now alumni like their mom!!
