Winter 2019

Dear Alumni and Friends, I hope that you had a very enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends. Soon we will be beginning the second semester of the 2019-20 school year. There is much to celebrate about our students and team success as well as their commitment to service. Our Golden Gobbler Thanksgiving Food Drive is alive and well at Montini Catholic. Officially named the ‘Golden Gobbler’ in the fall of 1997, the drive has provided thousands of food items to numerous food pantries in DuPage County as well as plentiful boxes of food for families through our ‘Adopt-aFamily’ Christmas giving program. Service is a key component in our Lasallian educational experience. This fall our girls Volleyball team raised funds for Breast Cancer research through their ‘Volley for a Cure’ match while the Football team raised money for the JAWS Foundation at their ‘Tackle for the Cure’ game. Each weekend our students are providing service at local PAD shelters and to the homeless in the city of Chicago. Over this past summer our students participated in a Habitat for Humanity service trip in Indiana and an international mission trip in Jamaica working in an orphanage in the Riverton Meadow community, one of the poorest communities in the country. The ‘Spirit of Giving’ is very much alive at Montini Catholic! The community service learning opportunities that are afforded to our student, as well as the academic and extracurricular programs that are available, are made possible through the generosity and support we receive from our school community. This issue of the Bronco Express provides us with the opportunity to say thank you to all who provided generous support during the 2018-19 school year. It is your support that allows us to continue to provide our students with extensive offerings in our Academic, Extracurricular, Fine Arts and Community Service learning programs. I know I speak for all our students, faculty and staff when I say we are truly grateful. We are now in the midst of our Annual Fund Drive. I am hopeful that all will continue their generosity to our school. I invite those who have not participated in the Annual Fund to experience the ‘Spirit of Giving’ by making a gift this year. Every student at Montini Catholic benefits from your gift to the Annual Fund. A huge thank you goes out to Leigh-Anne, Gerry and Margaret Kazma for their wonderful gift to transform our computer center into a state of the art technology innovation center. Our students are enjoying this new educational space during and after school and the Kazma Family Innovation Center has been a great addition to our school - benefiting our STEM program – a STEM program that Newsweek Magazine recently ranked in the top 7% of high schools in the United States. As always, my sincere appreciation to our alumni, families and friends for your continual support and dedication to Montini Catholic. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2020. “May Jesus Live In Your Hearts…Forever”. President Sincerely,

Jim Segredo, President

INTO THE FUTURE Montini Catholic proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony for our new Kazma Innovation Center on Wednesday, September 25th.

The Kazma family proudly supports Catholic education by providing scholarships to the 7 Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Joliet. The Class of 2023 represented the 16th class of high school students that the Kazma family supported and mentored through their generosity. Since their inception, they have supported close to 600 students in the Diocese of Joliet and over 1,000 students worldwide.

Student, Aayan Dhir, showcases Robotics techniques in the new Innovation Center.

Leigh-Anne Kazma serves on several boards including the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), Chicago's Big Shoulders Fund and numerous elementary and secondary schools. She has dedicated her entire career to personally engaging with students who receive financial aid from the foundation. She serves as a mentor for her – Kazma Innovation Center continued on page 5

The evening included a Presentation of Gratitude to Leigh-Anne, Gerry and Margaret Kazma for their generosity in helping us turn our vision into reality. The center was blessed by Father Jeff Stoneberg of Christ the King Parish and guests were invited to tour the latest and greatest addition to our school. “Our students are enjoying this new educational space during and after school and the Kazma family Innovation Center has been a much needed addition to our school’s STEM program,” said President Segredo. Artists Month of the

Congratulations to Maria Hemmersmeier ‘20 and Elyse Spaccapaniccia ‘20* on being named Bronco Artists of the Month in the fall. Maria’s medium of choice - colored pencils. "I like how I can mix the colors and the shading of the colors." Maria loves drawing landscapes and city-scapes and welcomes the challenge of perspective and attention to detail in creating these works of art.

September & October

Elyse enjoys taking everyday objects and turning them into works of art through her photography. She thrives on capturing images of "the little things in nature" that many overlook. "I really enjoy photographing nature, flowers, and objects with vibrant colors. I love the vibrant colors because of how much they stand out among the others. Nature itself is very inspiring to me. There is so much beauty in it and no photograph is ever the same!"

Bittersweet Performance

6

Drama students are celebrating another successful Fall Play, ‘Tune in to Murder.’ The actors worked tirelessly for two months prior to opening night to ensure a successful production. Most agree that performing in front of audiences is just a small fraction of the benefits of getting involved in Montini theater. Seniors were especially sentimental with this being their last Fall Play on the Montini stage. Senior Dale Bacon is looking forward to his next performance in the Spring Musical. "I can't wait to act, sing, and dance my heart on stage to show the audience and put a smile on their faces," he said. "These memories are priceless and I would not trade them for anything in the world." (Photo above l to r: Seniors Sarah Zimmerman, Emmanuel Corpuz, Alex Reading, Dale Bacon and Christina Scheiman)

Mahmoud will be enjoying his 2nd year performing at the festival. "Both Mahmoud and Emmanuel are very talented," said Music Director, Donald Glowinski. "Both strive and excel in music!" The two are very involved Montini Catholic students.

Every year when the air turns crisp, clocks gets set back and Bronco sports fans say goodbye to their fall rivalries, Montini students gear up for their annual Golden Gobbler and Adopt-a-Family Events. Winter 2019

November 11th marked the beginning of Montini’s ‘season of giving’ with the onset of our annual Golden Gobbler Thanksgiving Food Drive benefiting local food pantries. This year marks Gobbler’s 22nd year. In 1997, under the leadership of Jim Segredo (principal at the time), Montini kicked off their very first Gobbler. Since then the event has become a welcomed tradition for students as they pit homeroom against homeroom and class against class to donate the most food. “I was really excited to get involved in Golden Gobbler this year,” said Megan Steiner ‘10 - this year’s new Student Government Moderator. She has been the driving force behind a push to get Montini students more engaged and involved in all Bronco activities. “I wanted to see what kind of difference we could make with the momentum of participation we've had in other events this year, and our students did not disappoint!” Megan, along with her team of class moderators (Mr. Eric Brechtel, Ms. Laura Medina, Ms. Stephanie Kuecker and Mrs.

SCHOOL NEWS Melanie Comella ‘10), have worked hard this year to hold more activities and events to cultivate more Bronco Pride! “Our moderators did a great job of motivating everyone to participate in Gobbler this year,” she said. “Everyone did a great job of communicating the rules, prizes, and the bonus items to their classes every day and encouraged them to get in the spirit!” In the end, it was the freshmen who pulled out the win, donating a record amount of food to the cause. “My totally unofficial count would be over 6,000 donated items (based off of the number of points each class earned),” said Steiner. Every year, she gets specific food requests from the food pantries served. “They request items for making their holiday dinners such as stuffing, pasta, rice, corn bread and dessert mixes, and then items they can use year round like peanut butter and jelly, soup, vegetables, and cereal.”

“There’s no better time than the holidays to reflect on and share our many blessings.” Megan has 9 Golden Gobblers under her belt as both a student and a teacher at Montini -and has been a part of the winning team 8 of those 9 years. “By far, my favorite part of the week is the homeroom contest!” she said. “I love getting my homeroom excited every year, and hearing all of the other classes talk about how they're going to beat us! I think the kids enjoy it as well - every year I talk such a big game and they want to see if I can back it up!” Back it up, she can - her homeroom has lost only once (2018) in her 5 years at Montini!

Gobblers gone by... Bronco tradition is 22 years old and going strong!

When Gobbler winds down at the end of November, Adopt-a-Family winds everyone right back up! Some of the food collected during Gobbler is allocated for families that are ‘adopted’ by Montini Catholic during the Christmas season. Homerooms, under the direction of Campus Minister, Michael Blanchette, get busy shopping, donating, sorting and wrapping loads of Christmas cheer for area families. The school's traditional 'Catholic Charities Adopt a Family' service program enables students to donate toys and gifts to families facing hardship during the holiday season or throughout the year. During the beginning of December, students donate money through their homerooms - which each homeroom receiving a family to shop for. The students receive wish lists informing them of the number of family members, their gender, ages, and sizes. "Most of the wish lists include simple items many of us take for granted like gloves, boots, and warm hats," said Mr. Blanchette. As part of their annual Adopt-A-Family project, each year students create handmade blankets to include in their gift packages. The money used to buy the material to create the warm blankets is raised each year by the school's Drama Department which sponsors a Halloween Dress Down (or Up) Day in October. "Our students really make a difference by lifting the spirits of families in need at the holiday time. Each year Golden Gobbler and Adopt-a-Family remind us of what is important in life and there's no better time than the holidays to reflect on and share our many blessings."

Megan fondly remembers her senior year at Montini during the Golden Gobbler festivities. “I was in Dr. K's (Kisicki) homeroom and he always made sure the seniors did not lose the class competition,” she said. “We weren't too concerned about the homeroom competition, because we wanted to focus on the seniors winning at the end of the week. We hoarded all of our food in his classroom and everyone thought the seniors weren't participating at all, then on the last day we unloaded our stash and destroyed all of the other classes!” That had been the tradition at Montini for as long as Megan can remember, so it was a bit of a shock this year when the

freshmen took the championship spot. “I'm excited to see what they do the next three years, and I love how much they're getting involved!”

State Champions Celebrate 10 Years!

14

On Friday, October 25th, we celebrated the 10 anniversary of the 2009 Class 5A State Champion Montini Broncos. Members of this historic team were invited to the newly renovated Vince Gavin Stadium Club to reminisce and enjoy 'guests of honor' status at the Bronco's last home game of the regular season. "We faced adversity all year, rebounding from a 5-4 regular season record and winning four straight playoff games to make our second ever appearance in a state championship game (facing Joliet Catholic)," said Head Coach at the time, Chris Andriano. "The Hilltoppers were heavily favored to win the game and add to their state title collection, but we had other ideas!" The Broncos claimed their 2nd state championship with a 29-28 victory over the Hilltoppers. It is still considered one of the greatest upsets in IHSA state championship history. ALUMNI NEWS

“Never run out of hot chocolate!”

as an alum. When Dina and I decided to send our kids 15 miles east to Montini, we knew we wanted to get involved and volunteer to help the school. Serving up popcorn & hotdogs maybe wasn’t our lifes’ mission, but we just wanted to help. Boosters was in our wheelhouse. Just being part of the community, working with dedicated parent volunteers, and great teachers and staff has been great. And, watching our kids grow up before our eyes has been really cool. Time goes by so fast. What is one of your favorite memories? I have several! During football season, we have the grillers make enough food for the visiting team for after the Varsity game. I loved to see the faces of the surprised players and coaches when we gave them a sandwich. They were our guests, afterall! Watching Jason Nichols coach (girls basketball) is another pure delight, he’s great and gets the best out of his teams. Another wonderful memory is hearing the heartfelt opening prayers before games by Mrs. O’Neill and Mr. Beirne.

A

fter five years at the helm, Dan Laughlin ‘86 is hanging up his spatula and stepping down as Booster Club President. We asked

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

him to slow down (just a bit) after an insanely busy football season and answer a few questions for us.

16

How long have you been involved in the Booster Club? I have been part of the Booster Club since 2013 when my oldest son (Ryan ‘18) was a freshman. I stepped up as President in 2014 with a simple raising of my hand. At the time the Boosters had a few parents that were rolling off so there were a few leadership positions that needed filled. My wife, Dina, and I were involved at our grade school (St. Raphael in Naperville) and knowing the great need of Catholic schools for parent volunteers we just said, “Yes, we can do this.”

I’ll never forget the Snow Bowl vs. Prairie Ridge game (2015)! Ryan was being confirmed that day, so I was at Montini early dropping off supplies for concessions and the snow just kept pouring down. Watching the parents come together to get the massive amounts of snow off the field - led by parent & alumnus, Jay Williams ‘76 - was just really cool.

Tackle for the Cure Family, friends and fans paid tribute to former student, and football team member, Johnny Weiger, at their annual Charity Game (October 18th) benefiting the JAW Foundation. The nonprofit organization was founded by the Weiger Family to support Pediatric Adolescent Leukemia Support (PALS), and inspired by their son, Johnny. JAW volunteers devote their time to raising funds for families with children undergoing treatment for leukemia in the hopes of easing their financial burden.

Something I’ll miss is arriving with a load of stuff for concessions and kids helping unload my truck, they’d get a candy bar and I’d get off easy! My most precious memory will be my pregame argument with Dina on how the operations of the football concession stand is run, it’s a classic and makes me laugh every time! Your least favorite memory? Running out of anything!

What advice would you give parents thinking about stepping up to run booster club next year? My advice would be to just raise What does this responsibility include? The Booster’s organize concessions for all home game sporting events, your hand and say, “Yes, I can do that!” Get school concerts and occasionally grade school games held involved and have goodwill about it. These days go by quick and it takes no talent to fill a at Montini. We also sell yard signs and school decals bag of popcorn! Getting involved in your kids throughout the school year and sponsor a Super Bowl and the school community, participating and square fundraiser to raise Booster funds. helping out where you can, I feel, will always What is the best part about being involved with the build strong bonds - ones you’ll have for life! Booster Club? Being part of the Montini community is Oh, and, don’t ever run out of hot chocolate! the best part! Montini has always been very special to me Winter 2019

‘spirit of giving’ all year long!

Volley for a Cure Our Volley for a Cure event was held on October 2nd this year. The event is organized by the players and families of the Girls Volleyball Program. “Each year the donations, support and spirit grows as we raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Research and Prevention,” said this year’s organizer, Maureen Barry ‘87. “Since this disease impacts so many people, we have found the generosity to be inspiring. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and not only is this a cause near to my heart, it truly is a labor of love.”
