“Despite our setbacks, Bronco students never ceased in their efforts to strive for excellence.” - Jim Segredo, President Dear Alumni and Friends, This year, Montini Catholic’s administration, faculty, staff and students faced tremendous challenges due to the Covid pandemic. We all overcame many hurdles - our staff worked extremely hard to provide a quality educational experience, while our students and parents worked hard to adjust to the ‘new normal.’ I am proud that we were able to provide our students with quality instruction (in-person and remotely). We were also successful in offering many extracurricular, campus ministry and social activities and opportunities in new and creative ways. There is no argument that the past seventeen months have been very difficult and draining on us all but, I am most proud of our students for weathering this storm with grace and perseverence. I know I speak for all the members of our faculty and staff when I say that our hearts go out to all of them. We know that they were not able to enjoy the full high school experience they deserved. Despite our setbacks, however, Bronco students never ceased in their efforts to strive for excellence. I am so very proud of them all, especially our graduating seniors, who through their leadership in the classroom, in extracurricular programs, social activities and campus ministry opportunitie, made this school year as successful as it could be. The Class of 2021, one of our smallest graduating classes in recent history, earned over $18.5 million dollars in academic scholarships and grants - truly outstanding. This figure does not include the athletic scholarships awarded to our 15 athletes who signed letters of intent to continue their athletic participation at the collegiate level. Four seniors were recognized as National Merit Commended Students, eleven were named Advanced Placement Scholars, eleven earned Illinois State Scholar honors and 40% earned the President's Award for Academic Excellence. I am also particularly proud that fourteen of our graduates were children of MCHS alumni (pages 8-9). Montini graduates will be attending some of the finest universities throughout the nations including Notre Dame, Boston College, the University of Southern California, Baylor, University of Illinois, Georgetown, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Miami, Purdue, Clemson, DePaul, Howard, Loyola, Marquette and Washington University. Two of our seniors also received appointments to the military academies, one to West Point and one to the Air Force Academy. Our Robotics team achieved success once again in the VEX State Robotics Competition (page 7) while our athletes had very successful winter/spring and summer sports seasons (pages 10-12). Our Fine Arts Department was not deterred by the pandemic with students performing in the spring production of "Everything I Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten" and in two spring outdoor concerts." As we look toward our 56th school year, I’m excited to announce that we will be welcoming a freshman class of 162 young men and women, and a total student body in the range of 520-530 students. We were one of the few private schools in the Western Suburbs to welcome students back on campus in February for full in-person learning and that is our plan for the fall as well. While we are currently waiting for direction from the Illinois Department of Education and the DuPage County Health Department, our expectation and hope is to be back to normal. Finally, I would like to thank Mrs. Roberta Raike, Mrs. Sue Martin and Mr. Tom Lentine, for their many years of service and dedication to the students (page 6). We wish them all the best as they begin new and exciting chapters in their lives. As always, my sincere appreciation to you for all your support and generosity to our school community and "May Jesus Live In Our Hearts ....Forever."

Jim Segredo, President Summer 2021

SCHOOL NEWS

we did it Seniors celebrated their success and ability to thrive throughout a year of uncertainty on Friday, May 21st at Montini’s 52nd graduation ceremony - as 123 graduates crossed over from Bronco students to Bronco alumni under the stars at Duffy Memorial Stadium.

Students and families were very grateful to be able to celebrate in person this year. "What a wonderful night of Bronco Pride," said parent and alumna Melissa Doucet '94. (The event was held outdoors to accommodate the CDC's guidelines for social distancing and was limited to four family members per graduate.) "It was a great night to be a Bronco!" said Mr. Segredo, whose prayers were answered

Valedictorian, Nora Sypkens* elegantly thanked her classmates for persevering together as a class and coming out on top despite many hurdles and setbacks. "This year was one which called for greater unity, flexibility and creativity, and this class certainly rose to the occasion. This class was placed into an environment of extreme hyper-awareness - awareness of how fortunate we were to be in school, the stakes of how careful we had to be to maintain this, and how precious each and every day was at Montini," she said. "Rather than discouraging us, this situation had the opposite effect: little things like eating lunch in the cafeteria - or the main gym - seeing friends in the hallway, or getting to go outside for even part of a class, became so much more special, and we approached each day with the mentality to make it count while we still could." As a drone flew above Duffy Memorial Stadium to capture the moment, 123 mortarboards were tossed into the air as Montini's graduates spent their last few moments together as a class. "Life has a consistent way of reminding us that the path will be winding and bumpy at times, and that we must journey together, with grit, with hope, with stamina," concluded Principal Beirne. "You’ve all shown those qualities this year - and that empathetic service to others matters. How we live this life we’re given matters. You matter!"

Congratulations to our Class of 2021!

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

"You are approaching a pivotal point in your lives, a unique opportunity to look back and look ahead, to be grateful and to be hopeful," said Principal Kevin Beirne as he reminded the students of their challenging school year - one that will go down in history for all high school, grade school and college students alike. "This year has truly been a year like no other. What an exercise in “Never before.” “How can we?” “Should we?” “Let’s try this.” We have all adjusted, pivoted, worked hard, and problem solved together, in solidarity as a community."

with warm and breezy weather for the ceremony. He was joined on stage to present diplomas by Board Chair and alumnus, Dr. Jan Orlowski '74. "We congratulate our graduates and recognize their outstanding families. These seniors have accomplished so much over these last four years and have endured even more during this historic Covid age. On behalf of the Montini Catholic faculty and staff, I want to thank all of the families and loved ones who have helped these graduates to not just survive, but to thrive during this historic year."

ongratulations to 2021’s Valedictorian, Nora Sypkens & Salutatorian, Heather Sledzinski!

4

Both young ladies were grateful and excited to receive the good news during Academic Awards Night - May 5th. "It has been quite a journey to get here - more late nights spent studying, lunch periods spent working in student services, and quizlets than I can count," says Nora. With plans to major in Chemistry at the University of Kentucky this fall, Nora is more than ready to begin her next chapter. "It got pretty hectic quite a few times with school, sports, and clubs, but the thought of getting to where I am today was really the fuel that kept me going." She truly lives the expression of her favorite quote, "Do something today that your future self will thank you for." "My parents (Chad and Maureen Barry Sypkens '86) were so excited," said Nora, admitting that there was a lot of built up anticipation the night of the announcement. "All of the hopeful conversations about the honor of valedictorian being a possibility were finally fulfilled. It was a great feeling!"

Congratulations to nora, heather, OUR graduates . . .

"I’m very grateful for this honor,” said Heather. “I know I owe so much to the wonderful teachers at Montini who have helped me out immensely to get to where I am today." "My parents (Bon and Marilyn Sledzinski) were so excited when I was announced as Salutatorian! I got to hear how proud they were of me for the rest of the (Academic Awards) night and was forced to take way too many pictures with my (Salutatorian) plaque so they could spread the news to all my relatives," she jokes. "My parents have impacted me the most academically and I know they will continue to do so in the future. I’ve witnessed the rewards of hard work through their examples, but more importantly, they’ve taught me that dedication and talent aren’t everything a reliance on others and on God is equally as important.” Heather's senior yearbook quote this year, "I tested positive for optimism!" truly exemplifies her character and drive. She will be attending Purdue University in the fall to pursue a career in Chemical Engineering.” We know we’ll be hearing great things from both Nora and Heather this fall.

staff members say goodbye Congratulations to Roberta, Tom and Sue on their retirements.

VFW’s National Teacher Award This spring, Campus Minister Michael Blanchette was recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars with their National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Each year the VFW honors a teacher who has displayed outstanding dedication and commitment to community service learning throughout their career. Michael was selected for his consistent commitment toward serving Montini Catholic, as well as local, state and international communities. Throughout his 20+ year career at Montini, he has organized countless service projects including Habitat for Humanity, March for Life and international service trips (Nicaragua and Jamaica) to help impoverished families. “Mike is a humble man who does not look for recognition or accolades,” said President Segredo. “He is a man who truly instills the spirit of community service, working shoulder to shoulder with our students. His volunteerism speaks volumes in promoting our country’s value of service. He is a true patriot.”

his year marked the ‘end of an era’ here at Montini for three very special faculty members - contributing 55 combined years of service to Montini. Foreign Language Department Chair, Roberta Raike, taught for a total of 46 years, since 1975 - 21 of which were spent in Bronco classrooms. She began her career at a Catholic high school in Corpus Christi, TX before coming back to the Chicagoland area in 1994. She taught at De La Salle High School prior to Montini in 2000. Roberta says she will forever cherish the memories of her fellow teachers and staff members. "The camaraderie that was formed through laughter, tears, and experiences will remain with me forever." Athletic Director, Tom Lentine, began his Bronco career as Dean of Students in 2008. Tom was working at an inner-city charter school. Upon hearing about Bill Leeberg’s retirement, he decided to make a change,

RECOGNIZing LASALLIAN Montini Catholic Bronco Express

Montini Catholic awarded Assistant Campus Minister and Theology teacher, Kelly Davis with the prestigious Lasallian Educators Award for 2021. Each year, Montini’s administrative team presents the award to a faculty/administration member who truly represents and practices the Lasallian Spirit of education with both their colleagues and students. Kelly has been a member of the Bronco family since 2006 - playing a key role in the Christian formation of Bronco students as a member of the Theology Department. Kelly is Co-Director of Montinis’ Kairos Retreats and also coordinates the Sophomore Day of Service retreats which takes our young Lasallians throughout the community to provide service to local charities, churches and food banks. She truly lives the Lasallian mission of service to others.

during a time when children Tommy ‘10 and Chris ‘11 were students at Montini. “Being a dean truly provided a rewarding place for me to touch the hearts of students, guiding them to making good decisions.” In 2014 Tom made the move into the Athletic Department. “I will remember all of the wonderful teachers, coaches and staff that have made me a better person and have made Montini a great place to work!” Administrative Assistant, Sue Martin, is also saying goodbye. Sue became a member of the staff in 2000 when son, Jonathan '04, became a Bronco his freshman year. Coincidentally, at that time Montini was looking for an Attendance Officer. "When Jonathan became a Bronco, so did I!” Sue’s words of wisdom for anyone wanting to work with teenagers at a bustling high school? "Some days will be easy – most days will be crazy, so take each day as it comes! But above all, have fun and enjoy the students!"

EXCELLENCE

Michelle Ptak O’Connor ‘88 is the recipient of Montini’s first ever Lasallian Partner Award for her hard work and dedication. The award was created to honor a staff member, assistant, coach, or volunteer who also represents and practices the Lasallian Spirit of education. Michelle began her Bronco career in 1998 and currently works alongside President Jim Segredo in the Development Department. She is instrumental in the success of Montini’s many special events, including the Bronco Classic Golf Outing and Maroon & Gold Gala. She also runs the Annual Fund, assists alumni in organizing class reunions and has taken on the responsibility of producing several e-newsletters (Montini Matters, Bronco Bytes and special announcements). Michelle oversees our website and database, assists with social media and played a vital role in all avenues of communication with members of our school community throughout the Covid crisis.

NICK CHIARAMONTI ‘84 • Devin ‘21 As I sat on the football field at graduation I was struck by the fact that it was probably the last time I would ever be on the Montini campus. Devin is my last child to graduate from Montini. After 12 years of attending games, sports jamborees, curriculum nights, teacher conferences, concerts, theatrical performances and graduations, Suzanne and I no longer have a reason to attend an event at Montini. I know we can go to games in the future if we choose, but the meaning will not be the same. When I graduated in 1984 I was so excited to move on to the next part of my life I did not think about whether or not I would ever be at Montini in the future. Now, as a parent, I am not so sure I am as ready to move on. As a result, on graduation night, I took a moment to soak in the sights, sounds and smells. My advice to Devin, and all graduates, is to find what your passion is, and attack it with everything you have. For those who are attending college, know that you will be challenged academically, socially, spiritually, civically and so much more in a way you never have. Be present for everything you do. Zealously attack your studies. Eagerly participate in the events that college brings. Participate in everything you can, while effectively balancing the academic load. For those not

As a Montini Catholic graduate of 1986, I am proud to have my son attend and graduate from my alma mater. The older I get, the more I realize the impact a Lasallian education had on me. I wanted to share my experience with my children. My husband and I have always taught the importance of faith, family, and education, with the goal to glorify God by becoming the best version of oneself. My teachers in the 80s not only taught these core values, but they lived them by example. The respect I have for the faculty was strengthened by their character and interest in me as an individual. I realize that surrounding my children with positive role models is a key to their success. The world is ever changing, and I feel blessed to be able to partner with a team of educators who mentor both in and out of the classroom. Montini Catholic was put to the test this past year, and their efforts to

attending college, find your true north. Get up every day to do something you love and not just something. Perhaps someday I will attend a grandparents day at Montini.

Melissa Bonomo Doucet ‘94 • cal ‘21 Cal grew up attending homecoming celebrations and Friday night football games. At a young age, he would watch and cheer on Coach Vosicky as he was on the football field, knowing he would one day play on the same field. Attending Montini events is something our family looked forward to. I secretly hoped that he would be able to share some of the same memories and traditions that my siblings and I experienced years ago - and that he would make life long friendships that I continue to have with members from the class of 1994! Fast forward to May 21, 2021 and here we are, Cal becomes another member

of the Bonomo family to be an alumni of Montini Catholic High School. I have great pride knowing that both Cal and I walked the same halls, shared some of the same great teachers, and will forever cherish the many special moments Montini provided us with. Congratulations, Cal and the Class of 2021!

Jim Hubeny ‘96 & Katie Doll Hubeny ‘96 James ‘21 In May of 1996, Jim and I graduated from Montini Catholic. Twenty-five years later, we had the privilege of watching our oldest son graduate from Montini Catholic. It was a surreal moment and a very proud moment for us. Jimmy is the 12th member of our combined families to graduate from Montini and we had not attended a graduation since 2001. It was so nice to see that Montini has upheld so many of the graduation traditions; such as white gowns for girls and maroon gowns for boys, the choir singing ‘Like An Eagle’ and award recipients speaking at the ceremony. And of course, who could forget the graduation ceremony closing with, “Live Jesus in our hearts … forever.” It was an easy decision to send our children here. Montini is family to us. We were pleasantly surprised to see many changes since our

days as students; iPads instead of textbooks, major building additions and renovations and an expanded selection of classes. It was comforting to know that many things were the same; the family-friendly atmosphere, the small class sizes as well as the time and attention shown to students from the faculty and staff. We look forward to attending many more Montini graduations in the future. Next up is our son, Ryan ‘22, with Sean following in 2025 and Mary Grace closing it out in 2028. High school can be a tough time for students and parents. Knowing that our children are enveloped in Montini Catholic’s Bronco family has made that time more enjoyable and reassuring.

Kimberly Kellogg Kasallis ‘85 max ‘21 When Max was young there was no question that his education would include Montini Catholic. As my parents made the sacrifice to send me and my siblings to Montini, I am grateful that I have been able to provide the same for Max and Maddie. Walking through the doors of Montini today, seeing familiar faces - it still feels like home. There is no doubt that my 4 years at Montini provided me with the solid foundation for furthering my education. A strong curriculum, caring teachers and exemplary values continue to be

their standards. I am confident Max received this strong base and will succeed regardless of what path he decides to pursue. I was honored to attend the most beautiful graduation ceremony. The Class of 2021, undoubtedly deserved it for overcoming so many challenges this year. Montini never fails to impress!

maureen barry sypkens ‘86 Nora ‘21 The Class of 1986 is something special. The turnout for Montini events, reunions, volunteer opportunities and legacy students is abundant! However, the decision to attend Montini was all Nora's. When she selected Montini, I was honored. Returning to campus as a parent and seeing '86 classmates at every turn solidified my sense of Bronco family. She was in good company. I was confident that I would navigate these high school years with the help of lifelong friends. As a result, Nora has experienced countless Bronco opportunities, honors and accolades. It is my hope that as she grows from a teen to an adult, she continues her gratitude for all Montini has to offer. The best way to celebrate her experience at Montini will be to pay it forward - on and off campus. As we are both now Montini Alumni, Nora and I will continue to prioritize family, service and community. 1-2-3 BRONCOS AH OOO!!

Regional Champions

Our Broncos enjoyed another strong spring baseball season, winning the program's seventh consecutive IHSA 3A Regional Championship with a record of 22-9. The Broncos defeated the Friars of Fenwick three times, and by a score of 5-0 to win the Regional, with starting pitcher Cash Campbell ‘24 and reliever Cole Teschner ‘23 combining for a no-hitter in the championship game. Highlights of the season included a thrilling road victory over the Vikings of St. Laurence in a rematch of the 2019 State Championship game, and decisive wins over Loyola Academy and Wheaton Warrenville South. The 2021 Broncos were led by senior captains Jack Angus, Antoine Harris, Max Kasallis,* and Patrick Wind. Junior Estevan Moreno, a University of Notre Dame recruit, was named Player of the Year in our division of the Chicago Catholic League, while Angus, Harris, and Wind earned Chicago Catholic League All-Conference honors.

Final Record- 8-5-1 • After a cancelled 2020 season, our Lady Broncos entered the 2021 season with only four returners with varsity game experience (Franca Finch ‘21, Jillian Snukst ‘21, Alivia Gianatasio ‘21 and Sawyer White ‘22) and a new coach (Coach Perry) who had yet to coach a game after almost a year on the job (due to Covid cancellations). The talent and potential were there, but experience and youth caused the team to learn about themselves early on. The Broncos opened up the season 1-4, scoring 7 goals along the way, we competed and were in the game against every opponent, but struggled to earn a result. “We finally started to hit our stride mid season and went 7-1-1 in the final 9 games of the year. In a year where we were just grateful to be playing again, we continued to grow and learn about ourselves each game,” said Coach Perry. “After starting the season 0-2, I told the girls, ‘we will not be the same team by the end of the year, I can promise you that.’ They worked hard each day in practice, were motivated to improve and become more cohesive as a group and it showed.” The team ended the year in the Sectional Semi-Final game, but were Regional Champions, and had numerous players garner accolades. Sophomore transfer, Maren Hoovel ‘24 went on a tear, scoring 20 goals and having two assists on her way to being named Conference Player of the Year in her first soccer season at Montini. The future is bright and the foundation has been set out for Montini Girls Soccer. The standard is set and the girls have only just started to tap into the potential they can reach. This team is going to be dangerous next spring!

TWO FOOTBALL STANDOUTS EARN MARKS OFF THE FIELD

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

During our April 1st game, Karl and Fran Weiger announced the recipient of their 8th Annual ‘Spirit of '76’ Award in memory of their son, Johnathan who passed away during his sophomore year in 2012. The Weiger Family is inspired to present a special award each year to a unique member of the varsity football team. The award recognizes the player who best embodies that of great character, faith and sportsmanship. This year's recipient was senior, Cooper Petersen. "Cooper has excelled both in the classroom and on the football field over his years here at Montini, and we are very proud that the Weiger Family has selected him as this year's Johnny Weiger Award Winner," said Coach Mike Bukovsky ‘83. He describes Cooper as a well rounded young man, who epitomizes the high school student athlete experience. "He is a soft spoken humble player, who always demonstrates the highest degree of character in everything he does, and is a true ambassador for the Montini Catholic Football Program."

The ‘Bumber's Corner Locker’ award, named after 1989 graduate and football standout, Brad Bumber, who passed away (from esophagal cancer) in 2015, went to senior Patrick O'Connor*. "Patrick is a natural fit to receive the Brad Bumber award," said Coach Bukovsky. " He has the same Bronco passion, enthusiasm, and "Team First" attitude that Brad demonstrated everyday." The unique idea to honor a current football player each year with the use of this special locker was the brainchild of Brad's teammate, alumnus, Brian Forde' 89. Patrick is the third Bronco to receive this honor (last year's honor went to Patrick Peters '20 and the 18/19 season honor went to Raymond Wojkovich '19). "Both Patrick and Brad worked extremely hard to bring out the best in themselves everyday, and earned the utmost respect from both their teammates and coaches," added Coach Bukovsky. "They could always be counted on, and always left everything they had on the field. It is extremely fitting that these two gritty players will forever be entwined in Montini football history!" In May, Patrick and Coach Bukovsky welcomed a very special visitor to Bumber’s Corner Locker. Michael Bumber, Brad’s seven year old son (and mom, Christina) stopped in to say hello and to see the honored locker named for his dad. Summer 2021

Maddie Kasallis ‘22* (43 kills/8 aces) and Nora Sypkens ‘21* (36 kills/10 aces). The Lady Bronco defense was led by junior libero Reeghan Boyer ‘22 (144 digs) with assistance from Paige Pickering (71 digs/7 blocks), Devyn Church (11 blocks) and Maddie Kasallis* (20 blocks). Volleyball wrapped up their season celebrating three seniors, Nora Sypkens* (‘21 Valedictorian) headed to Kentucky to study Chemistry, Kennedi Bell who will continue her volleyball career at Lewis University and Devyn Church who will also continue her volleyball career at St. Ambrose University. We are really excited about the future of our program and to welcome our freshman into the Lady Bronco Volleyball Family. Varsity has several starters returning and we are looking to have a very competitive fall. Can’t wait to hit the courts this summer!

WRESTLING STANDOUTS COMMIT Signing Letters of Intent on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 were: Colin Baker - Wabash College Nicholas Gonzalez - Air Force Nain Vazquez - Army West Point We can’t wait to follow their progress. Good luck, Colin, Nick and Nain!"

Facts about Brian CASEY we never knew we didn’t know . . . 5. I still believe the best show/character on TV was ‘24’/Jack Bauer. 6. The first concert I ever attended was Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory and Blink 182 (1998!) at the New World Music Theater in Tinley Park and it's still the best concert I ever attended. 7. My first interaction with my future wife was me cheating off of her in a college Spanish class. (Sorry St. Ambrose University.) 8. My first real job was working the concession stand at the Yorktown AMC Theater. 9. When Champps (Meyers and Butterfield) closed and the chicken parm sandwich was no longer an option - my life took a dark turn. 10. Game Two of the 2005 World Series will forever be the best sporting event I've ever attended. 11. My seven year old son, Parker, has attended 55 baseball games and has been tossed or handed 42 total major league baseballs - with no help from an adult - including by the likes of Lucas Giolito, Christian Yelich, Umpire Angel Hernandez and a Miller Park beer vendor. 12. As a Communications student at UF, I was the radio play-byplay voice of Florida Gator softball in 2004-2005. 13. If someone gave me an all expenses paid trip to a vacation destination of my choice, I would still choose Disney World in Orlando, Florida! 14. 18. My first car when I turned 16years old was a 1996 Navy Blue/Gray Dodge Aerostar. I think my junior year homecoming and turnabout dates would agree that it was essentially as classy as a limo.

19. My wife’s and my ‘thing’ is summer Kenny Chesney concerts - nine concerts, six different cities/venues.
