Second passage au Festival pour cet artiste canado-américain à la voix de velours et aux influences multiples: classique, pop, cabaret et même opéra. Créatifs et éclectiques, Rufus Wainwright et son groupe ont sorti cette année un nouvel album, intitulé Out of the Game. Ils se produiront ce soir au Miles Davis Hall. This is the second visit to the Montreux Jazz Festival for the American-Canadian artist. Creative and eclectic, Rufus Wainwright shows multiple influences: classical, pop, cabaret, even opera. This year, he and his band have released a new album, Out of the Game. On stage tonight at Miles Davis Hall!

WHAT A FEST !
la Table du Montreux Jazz Café
Vue sur le lac, végétation caressante, affiches vintages et petits lampions… Qui l’eut cru ? Sur les quais, il y a aussi de quoi se retirer du monde, ou au moins de la cohue des stands, le temps d’une trêve gastronomique. Inauguré l’année dernière, le restaurant labellisé du Montreux Jazz Café est le dernier-né des produits exportables du Festival. A Genève et bientôt à Londres et à Paris, on pourra goûter toute l’année au souvenir de la scène de Prince. En attendant, cette alternative cosy aux assiettes du bord du lac est l’endroit idéal pour venir se réfugier en cas de météo patibulaire, et par tout temps pour se faire chouchouter de 17h à 2h, plus le midi pendant les week-ends. Les serveurs sont aux petits soins et font même, en option, les programmes ambulants : « Vous avez de la chance, le concert a commencé il y a seulement cinq minutes ». Gallun, festivalier, s’apprête à mordre dans son BB Cheeseburger (un grand classique du restaurant, imaginé par Claude Nobs et Gilles Dupont, chef du Lion d’Or à Cologny) : « Cette année, l’affiche du Café est exceptionnelle ! Et comme c’est gratuit, j’en profite pour manger ici... » A la promesse de satiété vient s’ajouter, pour cet aficionado de Montreux, le plaisir complice des anecdotes personnelles de Claude Nobs, distillées dans les pages du menu. Les chocolats d’Aretha, la chemise de Miles, le songwriting de Deep Purple : tout, tout, vous saurez tout sur le Festival. Enfin, il faut aussi y aller pour honorer l’équipe, sémillante et consciencieuse. En cuisine, le chef, Bertrand, détaille menu ses échalotes tout en me récitant la carte - de la brasserie traditionnelle d’été - qu’il loue pour ses produits locaux : la pêche du jour
est une Féra du lac, le saumon vient de la prestigieuse ferme Balik de Toggenburg, et la double-crème arrive directement de la Gruyère. Pour compléter ces réjouissances, deux acolytes s’affairent à ses côtés sur les variations exotiques : carpaccio d’ananas au citron vert pour la fraîcheur, cheesecake d’Ella pour le vice, Pizzaluxe au foie gras pour le nirvana… Les trois garçons, dont la bonne humeur n’a pas été altérée par les décibels du café ou leurs horaires élastiques, résument bien le slogan du restaurant : « L’esprit du Festival et du Montreux Jazz Café dans votre assiette ». En somme, de la qualité, du plaisir et un ancrage local ouvert sur le monde : bon appétit. Salomé Kiner
Lake views, inviting greenery, vintage posters, flickering lanterns… Who knew? On the lakefront promenade, there is a place where you can get away from the crowds, or at least from the hustle and bustle of the kiosks, for some respite of a gourmet variety. Introduced last year, the trademarked restaurant of the Montreux Jazz Café is the latest of the Festival’s exportable products. In Geneva, and soon in London and Paris, you will find a year-round gustatory reminder of memorable musical evenings in Montreux. And here and now, this cozy alternative to a quick bite by the lake is perfect when the weather is looking a bit iffy, or under any meteorological conditions that inspire you to self-indulgence, 5 pm to 2 am, plus lunch on weekends… The wait staff is not only attentive to your
every desire, they also act as walking Festival programs: “You’re in luck, the concert just started five minutes ago.” Festival-goer Gallun, about to bite into his BB Cheeseburger, one of the restaurant’s most popular offerings (and conceptualized by Claude Nobs alongside Gilles Dupont, the chef of the Lion d’Or restaurant in Cologny), raves: “This year, the line-up at the Café is amazing—And the entrance is free! I can eat here before the gigs!” This Festival aficionado will not only have his hunger satiated, he will also enjoy perusing the personal anecdotes from Claude Nobs all through the menu. Aretha’s chocolates, Miles’ shirt, Deep Purple’s songwriting: find out absolutely everything there is to know about the Montreux Jazz Festival. A visit to this restaurant can’t help but leave you impressed with its sparkling, committed team. In the kitchen, chef Bertrand finely slices shallots while walking me through the traditional summer brasserie fare on the menu, and the local products that go into it. The fish of the day is whitefish (‘féra’) from Lake Geneva, the luxury Balik salmon is smoked in the Toggenburg region, and the double cream comes straight from the world-renowned dairies of Gruyère. Two sous-chefs are busily preparing some of the more exotic dishes on offer: a refreshing limeinfused pineapple carpaccio, Ella’s Cheesecake if you are feeling sinful, and even the over-the-top luxury pizza adorned with foie gras, that might just see you achieve nirvana… Three servers, showing no ill effects from either the decibel level or their around-the-clock schedules, sum up the restaurant’s philosophy: “The spirit of the Festival and the Montreux Jazz Café on your plate.” Pleasure through quality cuisine with local roots and an open mind: Bon appétit!

A partir de son magnifique ouvrage de photographies Jazz: Light and Day, préfacé par Philippe Méziat et paru aux éditions Motta Editore, Guy Le Querrec se livre à l’un des exercices qu’il affectionne particulièrement: parler de son art autour de ses photos, mais aussi restituer le contexte dans lequel elles ont été prises. Une projection « commentée », avec sincérité, justesse et une pointe d’humour, où le hasard et l’improvisation tiendront une place essentielle. D’ailleurs, n’est-ce pas pour cette raison qu’on l’appelle le « griot »?
Taking as a starting point his magnificent collection of photographs, Jazz: Light and Day (published by Motta Editore, 2001, with a preface by Méziat), Guy Le Querrec will engage in one of his favorite activities: talking about his images, the artistic creation process, and also the specific contexts in which he captured various photos. In addition to a guided tour of Le Querrec’s images, this session will also see the artist riff on an unpredictable variety of subjects with his trademark improvisational, witty style—after all, it’s not every photographer who has earned the nickname “the Griot”

Red Bull Music Academy Thursday @ Montreux Jazz Le luxe des possibles The luxury of possibility Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble…. Même si ce nom renvoie plus au jazz, c’est plutôt la techno qui qualifie les productions de ce groupe de dix musiciens réunis autour de Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer et Paul Frick. Cependant, il s’agit d’une techno particulière, façonnée à coups de batterie, de touches de piano et de cordes de violoncelle. Un son à la fois minimal et synthétique qui s’offre le privilège de faire l’impasse des boîtes à rythmes. Cette première session des Red Bull Music Academy Thursdays réservera encore d’autres belles surprises. En particulier avec la présence du DJ allemand Roman Flügel, membre binôme électro Alter Ego, qui sait produire aussi bien des singles pour torpiller les dancefloor que des albums solos plus intimistes. On retrouvera également Tiger & Woods dans leur rôle de repentis de l’air disco. Grâce à leur house instrumentale et pétillante, il ne fait aucun doute qu’ils sauront transformer le MJC en un jacuzzi bouillonnant de Golf House. De la soul au hip-hop, Radiorifle sera de la partie pour un set qui offrira un éventail large des sonorités qui vont rythmer cette soirée.

Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble: This sounds like a typical jazz band. But it would be more appropriate to call it a techno ensemble as the band of ten led by Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick are celebrating what is virtually an upside-down rave. Hand-made techno played
with drums, piano or cello. An elementary sound born of wood, metal and hair. Synthesizer and drum machines? Brandt Brauer Frick are not interested. The Red Bull Music Academy Thursday, created at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2011, is a venue for top-class acts. The German House DJ, Roman Flügel, for example: this Frankfurt-based DJ has produced as half of Alter Ego electro hits like “Rocker” and last year issued an intimate, playful and elegant solo album. Tiger & Woods are tailoring a new robe for old disco heroes: with their funky, live House they transform any Siberian wasteland into a flaming dance inferno. Also appearing is the Solothurn DJ Duo Radiorifle. Their set promises to become an affair switching between House, Disco, Rap and Soul: indulging in the luxury of possibility.

Romain Gavras et toi faites partie de ces nouveaux réalisateurs très demandés. Quelle est votre relation ? Romain est un très bon ami. On a beaucoup de délires ensemble, on se répond l’un l’autre à travers nos clips : c’est une émulation très saine. On a vu des animaux impressionnants dans tes précédents clips. Sur Twitter, tu évoquais un coq pour le prochain… Un poulet ! C’était une blague ! Pour qui serait ce clip ? Je ne sais pas… pour Duck Sauce peut-être… Pourquoi avoir choisi de réaliser le clip de Drake et Rihanna pour « Take Care » ? Jamie xx, avec qui j’ai une relation assez particulière, m’a beaucoup influencé. Sur son album concept, il a repris un titre de Gil Scott-Heron que Drake a utilisé : c’était un signe important pour moi. La famille Brodinski et Dj Medhi étaient très fans de Drake donc même si ce n’était pas mon cas, l’idée s’imposait d’elle-même. Et puis j’adore Rihanna. Il y avait comme un alignement d’astres. Ça m’a permis de développer mon univers tout en y apportant quelque chose de minimaliste. Ce n’est pas souvent qu’un artiste de R&B accepte de faire un clip narratif avec une imagerie symboliste : c’était un grand défi. Tu partages l’affiche du Miles Davis Hall avec Lana Del Rey, qui est aussi une amie. Qu’est-ce qui t’attire chez elle au-delà de son image travaillée que l’on connaît aujourd’hui ? Son image n’a pas tant été travaillée que ça. Elle sait ce qu’elle fait. Ce qui séduit les gens aujourd’hui, je l’ai vu de suite. Elle est magnétique et mystérieuse. Il faut creuser derrière les mécanismes de défense qu’elle s’est créée. Elle est à la fois vulnérable et forte. Elle me fascine et dès que je l’ai vue, j’ai su qu’il allait se passer quelque chose. J’ai eu raison !
Tout le monde attend avec impatience le concert de ce soir. Y aura-t-il un duo avec Lana ? Mystère…! You and Romain Gavras are among a group of young directors that everyone wants to work with. What’s your relationship with him? Romain is a really good friend. We have a lot of inside jokes, and we speak back and forth through our videos—it’s a very healthy rivalry. We’ve seen some pretty impressive animals in your videos. On Twitter, you mentioned something about a rooster for the next one… A chicken! That was a joke! Who would that video be for? I don’t know—maybe Duck Sauce? Why did you decide to direct the Drake and Rihanna video for “Take Care?” Jamie xx, with whom I have a pretty unusual relationship, influenced me quite a bit. On his concept album he covered a Gil Scott-Heron song that Drake had used—that was a pretty big sign for me. The Brodinski family and DJ Mehdi were big fans of Drake, so even though I wasn’t really, it seemed like a pretty obvious idea. Plus, I love Rihanna. It was like the stars just lined up right. I was able to widen my horizons and add something minimalist. R&B artists don’t often agree to make videos with symbolist imagery—it was a big challenge. You are sharing billing at Miles Davis Hall with your friend Lana Del Rey. What attracts you to her beyond the carefully elaborated image of her that we are all familiar with? Her image hasn’t really been all that elaborated. She knows what she’s doing. What’s
seducing people these days, I saw that right off. She’s magnetic and mysterious. You have to dig to get past the defense mechanisms that she has put in place. She’s both vulnerable and strong. She fascinates me—as soon as I saw her, I realized that something big was going to happen. I was right! Everyone is impatiently awaiting the concert tonight. Will there be a duet with Lana? Shure Voice Competition: Finale
C’est dans le superbe Montreux Palace que trois jeunes femmes pleines de talent ont chanté de tout cœur pour la finale du 10ème concours de voix du Festival. Bien entendu, il ne pouvait y avoir qu’une gagnante et cette année, c’est la Française Sarah Lancman qui a remporté le prix composé de CHF 5’000.- et d’une semaine d’enregistrement au studio de Balik Farm à Tottenburg. Le jury de huit personnes était présidé, comme les deux années précédentes, par Quincy Jones, très apprécié et toujours chaleureusement accueilli au Festival. Après deux jours consacrés aux demi-finales, le jury a choisi trois finalistes : Sarah Lancman (1ère place), Elena Mindru (2ème) and Marie Martin (3ème). La Roumaine Elena Mindru a su captiver l’assistance et a remporté le Prix du Public. Les chanteuses ont dû interpréter trois morceaux : une chanson de leur cru et deux reprises. Elles étaient jugées sur leurs capacités vocales, l’originalité de l’interprétation, l’improvisation et la présence scénique. Toutes les prestations ont été très personnelles. Xavier Oberson, président de la Fondation 2, commente les délibérations du jury : « La décision a été difficile. Chacune des chanteuses avait son propre style et l’exploitait à fond. » Marie Martin, Française aux origines espagnoles et cubaines, a d’abord interprété You Don’t Know What Love Is et a terminé avec une chanson joyeuse, lui permettant de « renouer avec ses racines espagnoles ».
Elena Mindru, qui chante un répertoire jazz depuis ses 15 ans, a expliqué avant chaque chanson la signification qu’elle lui conférait. Elle a offert au public une très belle version de Nature Boy. La prestation de Sarah Lancman était pleine d’émotion – elle s’est installée au piano pour interpréter The Boy Next Door, avant de terminer avec That Old Black Magic. Interrogée par le Montreux Jazz Chronicle, la gagnante, encore sous le choc, a avoué qu’elle n’aurait jamais imaginé remporter le concours. Le fait d’avoir été choisie par un jury présidé par Quincy Jones, constitue pour elle un « immense honneur » dont elle se souviendra « toute sa vie ».
Shure Voice Competition: final
Inside the grand walls of the beautiful Montreux Palace Hotel, three talented young ladies sang their hearts out in the final of the 10th Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. Naturally, there can only ever be one winner and this year it was France’s Sarah Lancman, taking home the prize composed of CHF 5’000.- as well as a week’s recording time at the Balik Farm Studio in Toggenburg. As per the last two years, the much loved and welcomed by the Festival, Quincy Jones presided the eight-person jury. After two days of semifinals, three singers were chosen to perform in the final: Sarah Lancman (1st place), Elena
Mindru (2nd) and Marie Martin (3rd). Elena Mindru from Romania also stole the attention of the audience, taking home the Public Prize. The singers were required to perform three pieces; one original piece and two personal choices. The judging criteria were based on vocal quality, originality of interpretation, improvisation and stage presence. Each performer’s set was personal. Mr. Xavier Oberson, president of Fondation 2 said of the judge’s deliberations, “It was a difficult decision. Each singer had their own style and they were adventurous with it”. Marie Martin, from France with Spanish and Cuban roots, started with her rendition of ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is’ and finished with an upbeat song, which she declared helped her reconnect with her Spanish roots. Elena Mindru, who has been singing Jazz music since the age of 15, introduced each song she sang explaining what meaning it had to her. Elena began her set with a beautiful version of ‘Nature Boy’. Sarah Lancman’s performance was very emotional taking to the piano for her performance of ‘The Boy Next Door’ before her final piece ‘That Old Black Magic’. Speaking to the Montreux Jazz Chronicle, the victor, still in a state of shock, admitted that she never believed she would win. When asked about how it felt to be chosen by a jury chaired by Quincy Jones she said, “it is such an honour… I will remember it all my life!” Helena Macadam

Responsable de la programmation Couleur 3 durant le Montreux Jazz Festival, ça consiste en quoi? Je suis arrivé à Couleur 3 il y a 7 ans et suis responsable de la programmation depuis 3 ans. Nous avons une émission en direct du Festival, « Café Voltage », de 22h à minuit. Mon rôle est de planifier les titres qui vont passer à l’antenne, de choisir en amont, en fonction des concerts les droits qui seront négociés par le Festival et de sélectionner les interviews des artistes. En amont, c’est donner envie aux auditeurs d’aller les écouter. Mais c’est aussi gérer les imprévus. Je pense à Scott Matthew, en 2009, qui s’en est retourné dans les loges lorsqu’il a réalisé que l’interview se faisait en public. Peut-on encore parler de liberté d’expression dans le journalisme. Quelle est la ligne directrice durant ces 16 jours festivaliers? Pour Couleur 3, c’est un peu notre marque de fabrique et notre force. Nous avons l’entier soutien de la direction pour aller au fond des choses. Nous n’avons aucune censure et il n’y pas de mauvaise question. Ensuite, les gens sont libres de répondre ou pas. Nous ressentons, par contre, que plus on monte haut dans la notoriété, plus les artistes sont briefés et ne peuvent pas tout dire. Woodkid ne parlera par exemple pas de son hypothétique relation avec Lana Del Rey. Ce que nous recherchons vraiment, c’est de diffuser les concerts, obtenir des morceaux exclusifs ou acoustiques, comme Sébastien Tellier l’a fait mardi soir lors de son sound-check au Montreux Jazz Café, afin d’offrir aux auditeurs un moment plus unique que l’album qu’ils écoutent en boucle. Tout ceci grâce à l’équipe du Montreux Jazz Café qui négocie les droits des concerts pour nous et nous aide à obtenir ces moments uniques.
Un souvenir émouvant, une rencontre marquante sur une émission que vous auriez envie de partager avec nous? Nous avions réussi en mai 2009, grâce au Montreux Jazz Festival, à faire gagner à un auditeur un concert de Yuksek dans son appartement à Neuchâtel. L’artiste était arrivé avec ses claviers, sa table de mix, et s’était produit, intimidé, devant une cinquantaine de privilégiés. Quelque temps après, il faisait salle comble au Festival ! Can you explain what it means to be the Programming Manager for Couleur 3 during the Montreux Jazz Festival? I started at Couleur 3 seven years ago and I have been Programming Manager for three years. We broadcast a live show from the Festival: “Café Voltage,” from 10pm to midnight. My role is planning out which songs we are going to broadcast, and choosing ahead of time, depending on the concerts, the rights that will be negotiated by the Festival. I also choose which artists we are going to interview, and I work ahead of time to convince our listeners to go to the concerts. Finally, I deal with surprises—for example, in 2009, Scott Matthew went right back into his dressing room when he realized that his interview was going to happen in public. Is there still some freedom of expression in journalism? What orders are you under during the 16 days of the Festival? That’s kind of Couleur 3’s trademark, it’s our major strength. We have the full support of management to get to the bottom of things. We are not at all censored, and there are no forbidden questions. People can always choose not to
answer, of course. On the other hand, we have noticed that the higher we go on the notoriety scale, the more the artists have been briefed and the less they can say. Woodkid, for example, won’t talk about his hypothetical relationship with Lana Del Rey. What we are really looking for is to broadcast the concerts, to obtain exclusives or acoustic tracks, like what Sébastien Tellier did Tuesday night during his sound check at the Montreux Jazz Café—so we can offer our listeners something more unusual than the albums that they play over and over. We owe a ton to the team at the Montreux Jazz Café—they negotiate rights for concerts for us and help us offer these unique experiences. Could you share with us a special memory, or a particularly moving encounter from one of your broadcasts? In 2009, thanks to the Montreux Jazz Festival, we were able to help one of our listeners win a concert by Yuksek in his apartment in Neuchâtel. The artist showed up with his keyboards and his mix table, and he performed—intimidated—for 50 lucky guests. A little later, he packed his venue at the Festival!

La première fois que j’ai rencontré Miles Davis, c’était à Newport, Rhodes Island. J’avais obtenu un accès au backstage grâce à Nesuhi Ertegun. Miles a vu que je portais un t-shirt brodé et m’a complimenté dessus. Du coup, j’ai enlevé mon T-shirt et je lui ai donné. Il s’est écrié : “C’est la première fois que quelqu’un m’offre un T-shirt!” I met Miles Davis for the first time in Newport, Rhode Island. I was at the backstage thanks to Nesuhi Ertegun. Miles saw me with an embroidered t-shirt and told me he liked it. So I took the t-shirt off and offered it to Miles. He told me: “It’s the first time anyone’s ever given me a t-shirt!”
