EDITO
a word from claude nobs Now 76 years old, I have been organizing concerts for over 50 years. I have traveled around the world more than once and still derive immense pleasure from every journey, conscious that each one offers an opportunity of encountering the “Other”, learning, sharing and growing. How incredibly fortunate I am to be able to head out and explore. Working in the hotel business as a young man and gaining from experiences accumulated over a decade, whether in the kitchens, at the reception areas or in the bars and dining rooms, gave me the confidence to launch out into offering my own brand of hospitality and entertainment leading to the creation of the Montreux Jazz Festival. I began in a small way with a 3-day jazz festival in Montreux in 1967 – with a budget of CHF10,000. I knew that to attract the artists I personally admired, many of them legends I had to offer more than just money. It was a delight to watch the faces of the musicians when they took in the wonderful setting and gasped before the panorama at Montreux and when they acknowledged I hadn’t exaggerating anything. I opened up my home and served meals, offered drinks to the biggest names in music and their entourage giving everyone the warmest welcome. I always had some Swiss chocolate and sometimes even a nice watch to give, all of which were crucial to soften the financial deal. The Montreux Jazz Café experience, particularly here in London, promises the same fascinating chemistry, the same warm welcome to each guest. Even the menu has been designed in the same spirit, featuring simple, unpretentious fare of the highest quality - the convivial rather than the ostentatious. Souvenirs that I hold dear decorate the walls, exceptional concerts play on the viewing screens creating an ambiance just like at the Festival where we have always chosen simplicity over excess. Essentially though, you are the key to the Montreux Jazz Café—even the most beautiful décor is meaningless without an audience to be entertained! So, come jam with me as we discover together what comes next in this ever-evolving improvisation! Claude Nobs Founder & CEO

HIGHLIGHT
Claude’s Collection Their shared passion for music was certainly a central pillar of the friendship between Claude Nobs and Miles Davis, but we should not underestimate the importance of another essential factor: their refusal to bow to rules, and their ability to develop their personal tastes without worrying about what others thought. This is what “Claude’s Collection” is all about: no rules and no limits, simply the desire to showcase products that represent the Claude Nobs lifestyle. Quality and authenticity are the watchwords of this collection composed of rare, and even unique, objects crafted by trusted brands for Claude and for London.

HISTORY
MONTREUX JAZZ CAFE Before creating what was to become the world’s most legendary music Festival, Claude Nobs, its founder, had just finished the hotel and restaurant school in Lausanne aiming to become a chef.
In 2012, we are delighted to open in an iconic location: Harrods, in London. Faithful to the original concept, the Montreux Jazz Café is surrounded by the Montreux Jazz Shop (see p. 8) and Claude’s Collection (see pp. 4-5).
Fortunately for the music industry his life’s ambition took a new turn when he was requested by the Montreux tourist office to help out with his own idea; creating a music festival.
The future is bright for the brand. A Montreux Jazz Café will open in Autumn 2013 at the Gare de Lyon in Paris, and 2014 will see the EPFL in Lausanne welcome us in a magnificent space built around the Festival’s archives.
He of course could not help blending his passion for good food and music together and it would not be long before it became common knowledge among the great artists that not only was the Montreux Jazz Festival one of the greatest places to perform music, it was also paradise for fantastic and unique food combinations. As far back as 1992 Claude Nobs and Peter G. Rebeiz, company President of Caviar House & Prunier, played around with the idea of creating a special café embodying the Festival’s unique blend of music and food, but this idea would have to wait until 2008 when the first Montreux Jazz Café was introduced in Switzerland, at Geneva Airport. In 2011, a second one opened at Zurich Airport.

These archives are one of the key elements of this adventure. The Montreux Jazz Café is based on their exclusive use—you can enjoy simple fine dining while watching mostly never before seen concert footage. The cultural heritage value of these archives is so important that UNESCO is considering including them in its program “Memory of the World.”

SHOP
Montreux jazz SHOP Music is certainly the essence of the Montreux Jazz Festival, but the visual arts have been there since the very beginning as well. The posters are the best example of this: each year, an artist is given carte blanche. That is how the Festival has been graced by the talents of, among others, Keith Harring, Andy Warhol, Julian Opie, Phil Collins, and Greg Gorman.
And of course, as a proud Swiss brand, how wouldn’t Montreux Jazz Festival offers a great chocolate ? See the complete collection on: www.montreuxjazzshop.com.
The Shop also showcases the Festival’s history through clothing, books, and hi-tech gadgets. But above all, it is the “Live at Montreux” Blu-ray, DVD, and CD collections that allow anyone to relive legendary moments in the comfort of their own home! «The Definitive Miles Davis at Montreux» DVD Collection

FOCUS
ANDREAS VARADY He was the revelation of the Montreux Jazz Festival 2012. He played nearly every stage, from Auditorium Stravinski to Miles Davis Hall, in addition to jams and improvised concerts as the mood struck him. It should come as no surprise that he is the musical guest of honor for the Grand Opening of the Montreux Jazz Café at Harrods! Andreas Varady is a phenomenon. The moment Claude Nobs saw an Internet video of this 15-year-old’s guitar renditions of some of the most famous jazz tunes of all time, he recognized this immediately. He knew he wanted to see him at Montreux, he knew that no one would be able to resist this pure talent. Quincy Jones certainly couldn’t resist: he immediately added him to his Global Gumbo All Stars. When Andreas plays, he is not 15 years old. He is not a prodigy. He is the essence of Gypsy guitar meets Afro-American jazz. George Benson had it right when he said: “He ought to be three times as old as he is to be able to play like that!” Andreas Varady will perform for the Grand Opening of the Montreux Jazz Café at Harrods

We Are Family Foundation: all you need is love
It is next to impossible to sum up all that the We Are Family Foundation does, given the impressive breadth of its activities. Its essence is faithful to the approach of its founder, Nile Rodgers. Producer, composer, musician, performer, humanitarian—his massive influence over contemporary music comes out of his approach to life and to others. In all he does, three words appear again and again: love, respect, and solidarity. In the same way, he hopes to answer the question he asked himself after 9/11 and that became a project unto itself: “Can we organize for peace half as effectively as others do for hate?” Nile’s Foundation is based on these cardinal values. When he speaks of his projects, it all seems obvious. Who could disagree with the idea that offering young people from around the world tools to better understand each other would result in a better tomorrow? Music provides the rhythm to learning exactly where it is the most needed.
Nile Rodgers and Chic | Auditorium Stravinski | 13.07.2012
To fund the Foundation’s activities, a gala is organized each year. This provides an occasion to celebrate the progress that has been made, to have a good time, and to honor those who contribute to improving ties between different human beings. This year’s Humanitarian Award will be presented to Sting and Trudie Styler for their unceasing commitment to this goal. They will follow in the footsteps of such inspirational figures as Sir Elton John, Peter Gabriel, and Larry King.
We Are Family Foundation October 29, 2012 Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom New York www.wearefamilyfoundation.org
This soirée will once again allow Claude Nobs to support, as he has from the beginning, this cause that is so close to his heart. It will also be a reunion with Nile Rodgers, who in July gave an anthology to the Festival, co-producing with Mark Ronson a “Freak Out Night!” with music all the way from Disco to today!

FOCUS
Jazz Foundation of America: Solidarity between Musicians Hurricane Katrina, in 2005, sadly shone a spotlight on the work of an organization essential for US musicians. By its support for musicians who, through that catastrophe, found themselves without instruments, without concert halls, or simply unable to work, the Jazz Foundation of America once again showed just how essential it is. For more than twenty years, the Foundation has been coming to the aid of jazz and blues musicians in need. Medical care, scholarships, opportunities for concerts or exchanges between experienced veterans and young talents—the Jazz Foundation of America is active on many fronts. The director Wendy Oxenhorn, supported by patrons like Quincy Jones or Elvis Costello, is doing an amazing job for the foundation. Nevertheless, the Jazz Foundation of America is above all about artists happy to get together to
play music and have a great time! That is why the awarding of the “Dr. Billy Taylor Humanitarian Award” in Spring 2012 to Claude Nobs touched him so deeply. It is a mark of recognition from the very people who have always fed his passion for music. On October 27th will be held the Jazz Loft Party, which the Wall Street Journal called “The greatest underground music event in NYC.” This is an opportunity for the Foundation to raise support for its emergency fund, but also for you to rediscover the underground spirit of jazz. You can be sure that Claude Nobs will be breaking out his harmonica! Jazz Loft Party 27 October 2012 New York Quincy Jones, Bono & Claude Nobs

Parmigiani Fleurier in the city of London
London is a leading City in Europe. Neuralgic center of business and culture, London attracts the crowds incessantly offering what other influent capitals can’t ensure: a truly international panorama and an ease of communication that stems from the universal English language. For many years now, Parmigiani Fleurier has been working on firmly establishing its presence within the British capital. Aside from a prestigious distribution – at Asprey, known to be the jewelers of the King and at Arije, in their store on Sloane Street – Parmigiani Fleurier is also to be found in more unconventional settings. Since 2001, the brand has been renting year-round one of the most exclusive dining rooms in town: The Belfry Club, better known as Mosimann’s Restaurant. Anton Mosimann, a famous Swiss cook established his headquarters in this magnificent historical building in Knightsbridge which used to be in turn a church, a private club, a base for the Royal Airforce and has become today one of the finest gastronomes in town.
Parmigiani Mosimann’s Restaurant, London
The private salon Parmigiani Fleurier consists of 52 square meters of exquisite decoration, a fine terrace with view on Hyde Park. This autumn 2012 is marked by 2 more milestones for Parmigiani Fleurier in London. Firstly, the brand is opening a boutique: L’Atelier Parmigani will open its doors on the much sought Mount Street. Tailor-made to exist as an extension of the headquarters abroad, this Atelier features a watchmaking unit at its center, demonstrating the brand’s knowhow. The decoration and furnishing reflects the brand’s identity – simple and elegant materials, warm colours and classical designs – yet the effort to achieve a “British touch” was made through a specific choice of fabrics and a strong sense of Anglo-Saxon architecture. Last but not least, Parmigiani Fleurier is very proud to be associated to Harrods and the Montreux Jazz Café for the opening of the 3rd and most prestigious location so far around the world.
As a part of Claude’s Collection corner, the Swiss watchmaking brand has manufactured many exclusive products reflecting the spirit of Jazz and the story of a long partnership which started on the shores of the Leman Lake.
