Deep purple
F | Un groupe fondateur de la magie montreusienne, dont le caractère de légende est particulièrement éloquent. L’anecdote de « Smoke on the Water », tube planétaire décrivant une scène épique au Festival en 1971 dont les musiciens de Deep Purple ont été témoins, a valu son surnom à « Funky Claude ». Venu six fois à Montreux, Deep Purple continue d’écrire l’histoire dans les parages, avec son Now What?! Tour de 2013. Rock dur et Métal lourd évidemment. E | Deep Purple as a group helped found the Montreux magic, one based largely on colorful legends. Their musicians witnessed an epic event at the 1971 Festival; their global hit, “Smoke on the Water,” that described it was how “Funky Claude” got his nickname. Back in Montreux for the 6th

le VISAGe Du rOCK F | Ils voulaient une petite salle, un repaire sans chichi ni manière. Ils obtinrent un club, un vrai, dans la droite ligne des scènes mythiques de Liverpool, et entièrement gratuit. Depuis deux semaines, à la Rock Cave, le thermostat s’affole sur des riffs fiévreux, le plancher tremble à chaque descente de batterie, et les nuques craquent sous le coup des headbangs. Si tous les soirs les murs suintent et si les amplis crachent un son qui enveloppe immédiatement les 300 personnes massées dans ce repaire bestial, c’est grâce au seul mot d’ordre que s’est donné Claudia Regolatti Muller, programmatrice : « Du Rock, du Rock, du Rock. ». Du Stoner, du Punk, du Metal, du Garage – une brassée de facettes de la musique du diable déployée sur une modeste scène de 24
proches de leur public, un sentiment de plénitude sonore », résume Claudia. Pour mieux cerner ce nouvel antre, nous avons soumis l’équipe de production à l’exercice révélateur du portrait chinois : Si la Rock Cave était... IntERvIEW dansants, romantiques, festifs et Montreux était plutôt branché Jazz. Mais Claude avait confiance en moi ; il savait que j’étais amateur de Jazz et que nous entreprenions une bataille difficile, mais il me voulait à Montreux alors… j’ai accepté de venir. Selon vous, quelle était la plus grande qualité de Claude Nobs? Je pense que ce qu’il faisait le mieux était de réunir des artistes et de les faire jouer ensemble. C’était un peu comme une jam supersonique. J’ai jammé avec des artistes du monde entier et certaines de ces performances font partie de la crème de la crème.
E | Nat King Cole is a huge reference for you, and your last album is a tribute to him. Why is he so important to you? Nat King Cole’s contribution is immeasurable. He did everything with a certain amount of elegance, suaveness and professionalism. He was probably one of the few individuals in my lifetime that had it all in one baggage: a great voice, a great musician, a great way of delivering his material, a great storyteller. When I heard his song “Mona Lisa,” there was nothing like it. Nat “King” was the right description of his position in the music world. I knew, even as a young boy, that he was not normal, and that he was the person I should follow and listen to.

GEoRGE BEnson F | Nat King Cole est une référence forte pour vous et votre dernier album lui rend hommage. Pourquoi est-il si important pour vous? La contribution de Nat King Cole est incommensurable. Il faisait tout avec élégance, suavité et professionnalisme. Il était l’un des rares individus que j’aie rencontrés dans ma vie et qui avaient tout : une voix magnifique, un immense talent de musicien, une manière géniale d’interpréter ses morceaux, une capacité formidable à raconter des histoires. Sa chanson « Mona Lisa » fut pour moi une révélation, je n’avais jamais rien entendu de pareil. Son nom, Nat « King » (« le Roi ») décrivait parfaitement sa position dans le monde de la musique. J’avais beau être un petit garçon, j’ai su qu’il n’était pas ordinaire et que je devais le suivre et l’écouter.
Comme les siennes, vos chansons parlent d’amour et de romance… Personne ne pouvait composer une chanson romantique aussi bien que Nat Cole. J’aimerais être baryton et avoir la même douceur, la même suavité que lui. Grâce à lui, j’ai beaucoup appris sur la manière d’interpréter un morceau. Si beaucoup de mes chansons d’amour ont été des grands succès, c’est à Nat que je le dois.

La première fois que je suis venu ici, j’ai été abasourdi par le cadre, par les Alpes. Les gens avaient essayé de me faire venir à Montreux, mais j’étais réticent, au départ. A cette époque, ma carrière était très controversée : je faisais beaucoup d’albums
Your songs talk about love and romance, just like his… There was nobody who could deliver a romantic song like Nat Cole. I wish I were a baritone and I had the smoothness and the suaveness that he had. It was because of him that I learned a lot about how to deliver a song. I’ve had a lot of love songs in my career that have been very successful. I have to give Nat the credit for that. You’re playing in Montreux for the 15th time, what do you remember about your first visit? When I first came here, I was amazed at the environment, looking up at the Alps. People had been trying to get me to come to Montreux, but I was very reluctant at first. At that time, my career was very controversial: I had a lot of dance, romantic and party records, and Montreux was more connected to Jazz. But Claude had a lot of confidence in me; he knew I was a lover of Jazz music, and he knew we were doing an uphill battle, but he wanted me at Montreux, so… I agreed to come. What do you think was Claude’s main quality? I think what Claude did best was to bring artists together and make them perform together. It was like a supersonic jam session. I got to jam with artists from all over the world and some of those performances are the best of the best. Camille Guignet

Into A BLuE nIGHt F | Chief porte bien son nom. Le prodige de la scène Hip-hop underground lausannoise nous a concocté un Groove épicé à la Red Bull Music Academy Thursday. Un beat est un beat est un beat ? Le beatmaking n’est rien de moins qu’une science. Et c’est justement dans ce genre de Groove qu’excelle l’artiste Chief, à la renommée internationale. Ce dernier façonne des beats qui diffusent une vibe plus Jazz que Jazz, non conventionnelle (No-Fi), avec un fond de bruit sourd. Plus récemment, Chief s’est mis à sampler des disques brésiliens dans cette optique et à s’aventurer dans l’univers plus club de la Deep-House. La meilleure description de la musique de Chief serait celle d’une passerelle entre le beatmaking classique et la production d’une Electro élaborée. A côté de ses projets solo, Chief est aussi connu pour avoir produit la crème de la crème en matière de rappeurs et de chanteurs, tels que Moka Only, Blu, Co$$, John Robinson, Kissey Asplund ou encore Aloe Blacc. Mais hier soir, l’artiste est revenu à ses premières amours: le DJing. Chief explique : « Je suis DJ depuis mes 15 ans. Ça a été ma première passion, avant que je me mette au beatmaking. J’aime entreprendre un voyage sonore en compagnie de mes danseurs». Une déclara-
tion plus qu’appropriée, puisque, à l’époque, le genre a été inventé par d’aventureux DJs newyorkais. En ouverture du clan des magiciens du Beat programmés à la Red Bull Music Academy Thursday – Pearson Sound, Jackmaster et Flying Lotus – Chief a fait vivre au public du Lab une expérience étourdissante, pleine de breaks et de cuts entrainants. Non, le Hip-Hop n’a pas disparu à la fin du set de Chief ; il a déployé ses ailes majestueuses et s’est envolé dans la nuit bleue de Montreux.

KEntuCKY WoMAn F | Écoutez : je crois vraiment que ça va pas le faire, entre elle et moi. C’est pas faute d’avoir essayé, mais il y a des incompatibilités qu’on est plus capables de surmonter. Surtout, c’est à cause des autoroutes. On ne s’en est pas rendu compte tout de suite, on était tous les deux des étrangers, ici à Berlin, on était à la même, mais quand on s’est mieux connu, j’ai compris qu’il y aurait toujours entre nous les autoroutes : là d’où elle vient, c’est des boulevards interminables posés comme des rails sur toutes sortes de prairies ondulantes, alors que moi c’est un ruban d’asphalte encastré à flanc de colline, avec les vieux hôtels en-haut et le haut bout du lac en bas ; elle ses highways qu’on prend direction D.C. ou la Californie – fuir, en tout cas, quitte à revenir –, moi mes routes qui vous appellent, vous retiennent, où sont venus s’inspirer les écrivains de ses pays à elle, James, Fitzgerald. Et la nuit est tendre qui à cette heure tombe sur Berlin. Qu’est-ce que je fous encore ici ? Je devais partir, tout avait été planifié, prévu. C’est pas trop tard, je peux encore attraper le train de nuit pour Bâle, et de là Berne Lausanne Montreux. Je vais quand même pas laisser perdre des billets à deux-cents balles. Il y a certaines choses, on peut rien contre, les autoroutes, et aussi le fait qu’elle brille dans sa lumière bien à elle. C’est ce qui m’a tout de suite plu. Ça aussi ça doit lui venir de là-bas, de tous ces espaces plats où rien ne la retient, la lumière, et puis les néons et spotlights, l’Amérique baby. La mienne est plus indirecte : bien sûr il y a le bon soleil paysan et dur qui vous cogne comme il faut en plein midi, mais souvent il faut compter avec les montagnes, surtout à ce haut bout du lac où elles se font massives, et c’est une chose qu’elle a du mal à comprendre. Si on s’engueule tout le temps, c’est à cause de ça E | Listen – I really don’t think it’s going to work out between her and me. It’s not because we didn’t try, but there are some incompatibilities that just can’t be surmounted anymore. And most of all, it’s because of highways. We didn’t realize it right away – we were both foreigners here in Berlin, in the same boat. But once we got to know each other better, I understood that there would always be highways between us. Over there, where she’s from, it’s never-ending streets laid down like railroad tracks on top of all kinds of rolling meadows; while for me, it’s a ribbon of asphalt sewn into the side of a hill, with old hotels on top and the far end of the lake at it’s foot. She has highways that you take in the direction of D.C. or California – to flee, even if it means coming back, anyway; and me, I have my roads that beckon, hold you back, places where her own country’s writers came to be inspired… James, Fitzgerald. And tender is the night that falls on Berlin at this hour. What the hell am I still doing here? I should leave; everything’s been planned, arranged. It’s not too late, I can still catch the night train for Basel, and from there, Berne – Lausanne – Montreux. After all, I’m not going to let 200 bucks worth of tickets go to waste. There are some things we just can’t do anything about – highways, and also the fact that she shines in her own kind of light. That’s what I liked about her right away. That too, she must have gotten that from over there, from all those flat spaces where nothing holds her back – the light, and the neon lights and spotlights, America, baby. My light is more indirect. Of course there’s the good old peasant sun that slaps you hard like it should at midday, but it often has to reckon with the mountains, especially at this far end of the lake where they get massive, and it’s something she has trouble understanding. If we’re tearing at each other’s throats all the time, it’s because of that, (even if it takes the form of

Une fois elle m’a dit que ce qui lui manquait, ici à Berlin, c’était la terre du bon dieu sous ses pieds ; l’Europe, c’était pas assez sacré pour elle, et c’est là que j’ai eu l’idée et que je lui ai proposé : je rentrais en juillet, elle pouvait venir avec moi et elle en aurait, du sacré, dans ma principauté au bord de la mer, du sacré dans les cordes et dans les cuivres, sur les quais dans la foule, du sacré dans le tempo et dans la respiration de tout ça (et la petite silhouette d’un homme qu’on croise toujours à un moment ou à un autre, qu’on est certain d’avoir déjà vu quelque part). C’était prévu, planifié, on avait les billets, et je l’aime, Dieu sait que je l’aime. Il faudrait vraiment y aller : boucler mon sac, courir jusqu’au métro, ça peut encore le faire, ce train a toujours du retard. On sait bien, vous comme moi, que je vais le rater, ce concert – ce ne sera jamais qu’une ligne de plus sur la longue liste de ce qui s’est joué au bord de ce lac et que j’ai manqué, qui s’est fort bien passé de moi. Il faudrait courir jusque chez elle et lui promettre la vie douce, ici à Berlin, ou à Montreux, ou même au fond de son Kentucky, si ça lui chante. Vous savez bien que je n’irai pas. Il y a un type saoul qui gueule une chanson paillarde en allemand sous mes fenêtres ; c’est toute la musique à laquelle j’aurai droit ce soir.

One time she told me what she was missing, here in Berlin. It was the good Lord’s earth beneath her feet. Europe wasn’t sacred enough for her, and that’s when I had the idea, which I suggested to her: I would go home in July, she could come with me, and there she’d have some sacred, in my princedom by the sea. Sacred in the chords and brass winds, sacred in the crowd on the quays, sacred in the tempo and in the respiration of it all (and in a little silhouetto of a man that you always see at one moment or another, that you’re sure you’ve already seen somewhere). It was planned, arranged, we had the tickets, and I love her, God knows I love her. I would really need to leave now. Zip up my bag, run all the way to the metro, I can still make it, this train is always late. We’re well aware, you and I, that I’m going to miss this concert – it will never be more than another item on the long list of what was played at the lakeside that I missed, that carried on just fine without me. I would have to run to her place and promise her a nice life here in Berlin, or in Montreux, or even in the boondocks of her Kentucky, if she wants. You know fine well that I won’t go. There’s a drunk guy howling out a bawdy song in German below my window. That’s the only music I’ll get to hear tonight.
