A

longstanding question for employers in every industry is: “How can I retain the efficient and key employees within my organization?” Job Satisfaction is your answer! Great portions of our lives are spent at work, so naturally we all seek job satisfaction. Whether you are working in your dream career or working a job to make ends meet, a point to ensure you are doing your best is accounted significantly to your happiness. In conjunction, this attributes to the crucial importance of job satisfaction. Job satisfaction becomes even more important on an individual basis when considering the elements of the workplace that cannot be controlled. Such as company policies, who your boss is or your colleagues’ personalities. But what happens when the basics are covered to achieve job satisfaction and it isn’t enough? I mean to say you work in a clean environment, you have some level

of job security, your relationship with your supervisor isn’t always hell Monday through Friday, BUT! It’s just not working out. The red tape to make an impact is too frustrating to clear, your coworkers from hell keep coming or there’s no “up” in the position you are working in. What happens then? Well my first piece of advice would be to start job-hunting, but in the interim, consider finding a way to make a better you. Try the following: • Find out what motivates you and run with that! Always! • If there appears to be nowhere to go up in your role, create one. • Cross learn with your colleagues. This may open up a new appreciation and understand for your coworkers while expanding your knowledge (maybe for your next job). • Remain Positive • Be conscious of the role of work in your life (this will mean something different to each person).



‘Chef Brian Lumley Creates a Badia Flavoured Christmas’ Shoppers of the recently refurbished Hi-Lo Manor Park were treated to a ‘Badia Flavoured Christmas’ as Badia Brand Endorser and Celebrity Chef Brian Lumley was on hand to treat customers with his talents and Badia Spices. The event was put on by World Brands Services, the brand distributors of Badia Spices, and was geared towards showcasing the versatility of the line of spices directly to its consumers. Elated shoppers gathered as the Caribbean Chef of the Year (2014), Lumley, delivered a live demonstration to a growing crowd. To everyone’s benefit, all about the supermarket listened in as Brian was heard through the sound waves of the Hi-Lo PA system as he walked through his every move to his Badia Spicy Lobster Penne Pasta with Mushroom and Mozarella Cheese. After keenly observing onlookers with great anticipation were then given a taste of the creation. Shoppers were granted one on one dialogue with Lumley who answered questions on his technique, the use of spices and preparation. Amongst the other bits and bites on the menu were: a Badia Carmel Roasted Ham Skewers and Badia Cranberry and Sage Grazed Chicken with Mini Croquettes, all prepared by Chef Brian Lumley. And what was a Christmas event without Sorrel? Hi-Lo’s customers were aptly served with a Badia Rosemary Sorrel Spritzer while enjoying the surprise festivities. The promotion was a hosted event and together with the Badia hostesses, rallied customers with giveaway activities. Testing the knowledge of loyal fans on the extensive line of products by Badia Spices. Customers proved to know their stuff and were rewarded with Badia gift baskets! Badia, in short order, took over the show at the supermarket with a 10% discount offered on the day to all Badia Spices products and all meats provided by Hi-Lo with a free Badia Spices sachet to accompany them. Customers didn’t go home empty handed and each received Badia recipe cards for Sriracha Chilli Shrimp Ceviche, Grilled Snapper Fillet with Spicy Coconut Cream Sauce, Curried Chicked with Mango and Spinach Salad, just to name a few, a Badia Spices sachet for the Complete Seasoning, Badia armbands. Sponsors Grace Foods provided the well received Smoked Ham for Mr. Lumley to add to his creations and joined in on the goodies offering customers recipes with a Jamaican touch offering recipes for Grace Ham Bone & Gungo Peas Cock Soup, Grace Ham Omelets and a Ham & Beef Lasagna.


One Piece of Career Advice You Always Should Ignore By Sarah Bown

We live in a society of sharing and caring, where friends and family are always putting their two cents into what direction your career should be going and the best ways to get there. Some, like the encouragement to tidy up your Facebook profile, is good advice, while those who suggest it’s ok to take a sick day to line up with Taylor Swift tickets should probably be avoided. Alarmingly there’s one common piece of advice often thrown around, which sounds good in theory, but desperately needs to be ignored by today’s driven and successful gen y women: “You should stay at a job for x amount of time until you even think about leaving. Otherwise it just looks bad on your resume.” Whether it came from your hairdresser, Aunty Meredith, or a well-meaning colleague, this advice can actually stall your career and lead you to miss out on new opportunities. Successful career progression is not a mathematical problem to be solved; it’s a complex and emotional journey where the path of each individual is unique. Your career isn’t an excel spreadsheet to fill out with “x” values in each cell whereby pressing “ENTER” will result in your magical dream career popping out. If only it was that easy. When the opportunity to change jobs or apply for a promotion arises, it’s up to you to decide whether you feel you have the required skills to put your hand up for it. So what if Sally Smith from two cubicles down has been there two years longer than you, let’s be honest she spends most of her time doing her nails and emailing friends. You’ve been diligent and hardworking, curious and dependable. You can’t put a time on how long it takes each person to fully develop these key skills. But what if it all backfires on you I hear you say? The most important thing to remember is when you apply for new career opportunities, you won’t be interviewed by your hairdresser, Aunty Meredith, or Sally from two cubicles down. You’ll be showcasing your skills and attitude in front of an employer who’s only concerned with what you know, the demonstrated evidence of your skills, and how well you would fit into their team. Research shows Millennials will have anywhere from 15-20 jobs in their working lives and perhaps even as many as 5 career changes. Do you want to end up 45 and filled with regret, thinking how you wasted too many unhappy years in unhappy roles just to make your resume look good? Your skills, your confidence, and the enthusiasm to be the best person for the role is what makes a resume sexy, don’t forget that!



Lumley’s Career

For Celebrity Chef Brian Lumley, it all started in his mother’s kitchen. The thought certainly isn’t far fetched as the 2014 Caribbean Chef of the Year lauds his mother as the first to ignite his genuine love for food. This led to his passion for culinary arts or for transforming seemingly ordinary ingredients into a gastronomic creation. A quick chat with Lumley will reveal his easygoing nature with a slight sense of humor to go with his talents. Awarded the Taste of Jamaica’s Chef of the Year twice, 2008 and 2012, and winner of the coveted Caribbean Chef of the Year 2013 title, one need not ask what sets this man apart from other chefs. But with his benign nature Lumley cheekily responds to what sets him apart as, “that I am a skinny chef!”. So what is this skinny chef ’s favourite dish to create? That would be a Roasted Lamb Leg with select herbs and spices. As he emphasizes he, just like other young men in there 20’s, he savors quality time spent with friends and family. Surely this is a dish he enjoys making for those closest to him. As if he didn’t have enough titles behind his name, Brian added entrepreneur to his accolades when he opened doors to his restaurant 689 by Brian Lumley. By their description, the menu reflects the easy sophistication and authentic Caribbean vibe that naturally comes from the chef himself. Slated to reveal a new menu in early 2015, 689 by Brian Lumley has certainly marked its place as a must try eatery, riding from the fame of its owner.


Though within a culture that hasn’t praised “celebrity” figures in the past but more so in recent times, Lumley has ran with the times and created a brand around himself. As brand ambassador to many signature brands, Brian accredits his incredible team for helping him to juggle it all. As for his celebrity status, Lumley remarked, “It is very flattering and I am appreciative of the love received from foodies island wide.” But all that fame hasn’t gotten to his head. He recognizes his social responsibility to the younger generation as he displays an admirable work ethic and drive. He shared with us some awesome advice for persons unaware of the direction of their careers “follow your passion! Be relentless in your willingness to learn…design your own life, or someone else will design it for you!” said Lumley. With so much going on, one had to ask how he ensured food with his name on it reflected his standards and tastes. The very sophisticated Lumley replied, “it’s all about establishing a plan, having the right team and executing as closely as possible to the plan”. But with all the years in the kitchen, surely he had some mishap to share with us…and indeed he did. Lumley spoke to his whopping 242 burns he had incurred over his professional life. Concluding there’s much too much difficult to pinpoint a specific experience, as his worst, Lumley is spirited of his career thus far and the valuable lessons he’s learnt. A career that indicates is still years away from its peak we wish him all the best.

Turning your Passion into a career

When most people think of “passion” they think of a hobby or an extracurricular activity that people do in their spare time for enjoyment. Most people don’t think of their day job as their “passion.” Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m a salesman, but I really want to be a teacher.” Or “I’m a receptionist, but what I really love to do is make jewelry.” It doesn’t have to be that way! Passion and business CAN go hand in hand. From a business standpoint, passion is a huge asset. People who are passionate about what they do for a living are: • More energetic, productive, and likely to go the extra mile • More creative, out-of-the-box thinkers • More positive and pleasant to be around • Magnetic - passion is contagious and inspiring When it comes down to it, passion sells. Wouldn’t you rather do business with someone who is passionate about what they do as opposed to someone just doing a job? The tricky part is figuring out how to incorporate your leisure-time passion into your career. Whether you want to start anew or just breathe life into your current job, try these strategies. • Search your heart. If you don’t know what you’re passionate about, take time to discover what is important to you. Life without passion is bland. Think of times in your life when you truly felt passionate about what you were doing, and find a common thread. • Make time for your passion. If you’re presented with an opportunity or asked to take on a new responsibility that you’re NOT passionate about, politely decline. This means you’ll have time in your life for what does inspire you. • Bring your passion to work. Find ways to incorporate your passion in your day job. How can you make work more fun, educational, or adventurous? Start a hiking club or teach a series of employee enrichment classes. • Encourage your co-workers. Be a cheerleader for others at work, urging them to bring their passions to the table. Cultivate an environment where everyone can contribute. When you do these things, you’re able to include your passion in your everyday life, and this adds spice and energy to any boring routine. Remember, you only have one life to live. Nobody has a double life. Your passion and your career don’t have to be two separate spheres of life. They can coexist, and - what’s more they enrich one another!

Passion is good for business. If you have passion and you don’t give up, you will be successful. Passion is the wind in your sails, the grease on your wheels, the pixie dust in your hair.... To your unstoppable success.
